ADVANCED COMPUTING CENTER FOR THE ARTS AND DESIGN

OUR HISTORY The Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) at Ohio State is recognized internationally for its pioneering work in computer graphics and 3D animation. In the early 1970s artist and professor Charles Csuri integrated the fields of art and science by founding Ohio State’s Computer Graphics Research Group (CGRG), the basis for ACCAD. The innovations of Csuri’s early team were widely applied to flight simulators, computer aided design, scientific visualization, magnetic resonance imaging, distance education and special effects for TV and film. ACCAD continues Csuri’s proud tradition of interdisciplinary research in the arts and technology. Color/light study by Katelin Coogan
TODAY Newly located in the renovated and historic Sullivant Hall, the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) sits at the nexus of the university’s Arts District as a model for collaborative research and teaching. ACCAD is a teaching and applied research center, welcoming graduate students who seek to embed computer graphics, digital animation and interactive technologies into their research. ACCAD’s mission is to educate, inform and inspire innovative thinking and experimentation through collaborative academic and research experiences for students and faculty. Graduate level course offerings include computer animation, game art, virtual and real-time environments, humancomputer interaction, motion capture, experimental scripting and interdisciplinary research seminars. A listing of ACCAD courses can be found at go.osu.edu/accad-courses

FACILITIES
ACCAD is an 8,000 square-foot facility that provides a computing environment of networked hardware and software and high-end graphics resources including reconfigurable collaborative spaces, natural lighting and a 15-seat graphics classroom.
SPECIALIZED LABS | SPACE Motion Lab: The 2,500 square-foot Motion Lab is a rapidly reconfigurable interdisciplinary space for motion research and advanced technology performance investigation. The facility houses an optical tracking system for large-volume motion capture as well as intelligent stage capabilities and a full suite of theatrical audio, sound, lighting, and media interaction and projection resources.
Simulation and Interactive Media Lab: This research space enables design, prototyping, hardware and software development for non-traditional forms of user interaction and graphics display. Real-time rendering, games and mobile device applications, networked multiple user interaction, touchscreens, stereoscopic and head-mounted displays are technologies used in the lab.
Sonic Arts Lab: This lab is designed for acoustic isolation and control, enabling advanced audio and video postproduction. The space is outfitted with advanced workstations with multiple displays, surround sound audio monitoring, wall-mounted HD projection monitoring and seating areas for team or client review of work.

The Moon Experience An MFA thesis project by Design’s Cheng Zhang, The Moon Experience is an interactive and immersive virtual reality system based on the historic events of the Apollo Program and developed with the support of ACCAD’s cutting-edge facilities.
Marcel Marceau Project: There is No Silence ACCAD’s motion capture system and movement database of previously captured motion data of Marceau was integrated into the training of the Theatre Department MFA actors in Marceau’s mime technique. The project culminated in the production of the play There is No Silence that incorporated several live performance technologies.
Motion Bank: Two Project Funded by the Forsythe Co. (Germany) this collaborative commission examines choreographic thinking in the work of choreographers Bebe Miller (U.S.) and Thomas Hauert (Belgium).
Seeding Sullivant Developed with in-house software, visitors access historical information (text, virtual 3D models, animation, recorded oral histories and video clips) with mobile devices triggered at beacon points throughout Sullivant Hall.
Virtual Patient Using an artificial intelligence-driven, customizable avatar with a conversation engine, all of which were developed in house, Virtual Patient is an interactive medical training application.
