Greetings from the Director

Welcome to another great year of Ohio State Concerts… most of them are free of charge and all are full of excitement! And the School of Music is reaching out to the Columbus community by celebrating new venues, including… The Garden Theatre in the Short North for Lyric Theatre Cabarets The Barnett Theatre in newly renovated Sullivant Hall for Dido & Aeneas, a collaboration with the Department of Dance The Palace Theatre for The Ohio State University Marching Band Hometown Concert Mershon Auditorium for the 24th Annual Music Celebration Concert Browning Amphitheater at Mirror Lake for Outdoor Jazz … and our old favorite, Weigel Hall Auditorium, for dozens of faculty and guest recitals, student ensemble concerts and chamber music. On a personal note, as I retire from the music faculty, I write to thank you for being such a loyal audience over the years. Allow me to introduce you to our new Interim Director for the School of Music, David Bruenger, who also serves as director for our program in Music, Media, and Enterprise. The 2016-2017 season will bring you a memorable year of music, so be a frequent visitor and ENJOY!

Faculty and Guests: COSMOS Trio

MONDAY

8 p.m. The celebrated trio COSMOS features Katherine Borst Jones, flute; Mary E.M. Harris, viola; Jeanne Norton, harp – all members of the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra. Formed in 2004, the trio has appeared on performance series and at conventions throughout the country. Their program will feature the iconic Debussy Sonata (1915), the most famous and beloved piece in the repertoire for flute, viola and harp. The program will also include Harbord Street, Milton Barnes; Suite Popular Espanola, Manuel Moreno-Buendía and two pieces originally commissioned and premiered by COSMOS: Trio in Four Movements by Libby Larsen and A Columbus Triptych by Stephen Main.

8 p.m. Together again for the first time: Caroline Hartig and Karen Pierson will be joined by pianist Marie-France Lefebvre, professor of piano, Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. The program includes clarinet works by Pedini and Settacioli, Williams’ The Five Sacred Trees for bassoon and Rota’s Trio transcribed for clarinet, bassoon and piano.

Scott Parry, director Susan Van Pelt Petry, choreographer Kristina Caswell MacMullen, conductor As one of the first and perhaps greatest of English operas, Dido & Aeneas offers a stunning combination of music drama inseparably entwined with vibrant dance and exquisite choral writing. Virgil’s fateful story of the abandoned Queen of Carthage, versified by the poet Tate, culminates here in Purcell’s masterful When I Am Laid in Earth, one of the most moving and beloved arias in all of opera. $15 $10

Solo works featuring sonatas by Beethoven, Chopin and Viktor Ullman. Ullman, a Silesianborn Austrian and later Czech-Jewish composer and conductor of great promise, was imprisoned by the Nazis in Theresienstadt concentration camp and later gassed at the infamous Auschwitz death camp in 1944. The powerful and emotional Sonata No. 7 was written at Theresienstadt and was his last sonata.

Guest Artist: Paul Barnes, piano

WEDNESDAY

8 p.m. Pianist Paul Barnes collaborated with composer Philip Glass for over 20 years. His Philip Glass Retrospective, in celebration of this collaboration and Glass' 80th birthday, features his own transcriptions of the composer’s famed theater works in addition to the Piano Concerto No. 2, which Barnes commissioned and premiered. Also, several of Glass’ new Etudes featured on Barnes’ latest CD New Generations. The evening will conclude with a performance of Four Movements for Two Pianos with Associate Professor Caroline Hong.

The Ohio State University Marching Band Hometown Concert

The Ohio State University Marching Band performs a new show at the Palace Theatre in downtown Columbus for its annual Hometown Concert. The Best Damn Band in the Land will entertain fans with selections from its popular halftime shows, fan favorites and traditional Ohio State tunes. Reaching Out to Our Community

The Ohio State School of Music offers more than 25 outreach events each year. We welcome over 5000 young musicians to campus annually to participate in programs that range from one-day instrument workshops to our Youth Summer Music Programs, and from our highly regarded honor band festivals to our youth concerts. We value our mission to educate, enrich and instill a lifelong love of music in future generations of musicians. Visit music.osu.edu/about/visit-us Visitor 24/7 Ohio Union South Garage, 1759 North High St. (next to the Ohio Union), is accessible from both High Street and College Road ( just north of 12th Avenue). This garage is open for visitors 24 hours/day, 7 days/week and is equipped with “Pay-On-Foot” machines. Take your ticket with you when you leave your car and pay “on foot” before returning to your car to exit. Limited Access Arps Garage, 1990 College Rd. (one block north of Weigel Hall), is accessible via the 18th Avenue extension between College Road and High Street. This garage is open to visitors M–F after 4 p.m. and 24 hours on weekends.

The Ohio Union North Garage is open to visitors M–F after 4 p.m. and 24 hours on weekends. All parking garages and parking lots have designated visitor disability parking spaces.
