CHOOSE DESIGN AT OHIO STATE
Our three undergraduate programs — Industrial Design, Interior Design, and Visual Communication Design — equip majors with the fundamental knowledge that defines their specialization while exploring the common ground of contemporary design practices. In the first year, students begin their study in interdisciplinary Design Foundations. In the following years, they pursue advanced opportunities to study together across the disciplines in a collaborative manner.
INVESTIGATE AND EXPLORE A RANGE OF DESIGN RESEARCH PROCESSES. Our curriculum is built around our value of research and students are encouraged to use their growing knowledge of new technologies and creative processes to investigate issues and opportunities. We help students become skilled designers who are capable of creating positive experiences through the development of innovative products, spaces, messages, services and social innovations.
I have had the opportunity to interview many prospective employees from various design schools and I have found that the students from Ohio State’s program repeatedly exceed expectations and can meet deadlines — a critical measure in today’s business world. — Esther See, Industrial Design, 2011 (Industrial Designer at Abbott)
DESIGN MAJOR TRACKS Bachelor of Science in Design (BSD) Industrial Design (IND) is a way of thinking about and visualizing potential objects, products, services and systems. It provides a human-centered means of understanding and accommodating interrelationships and supporting the interactions needed today. Interior Design (INT) is a way of thinking about and visualizing architectural spaces and accommodating human needs and desires. Interior designers integrate technical architectural systems into planning and developing spaces that support the health, safety and welfare of their occupants. Visual Communication Design (VCD) is a way of thinking about and visualizing identities and information. Using today’s technologies to create dynamic interactive systems, visual communication designers use design to bring meaning to the experience of navigating our world.
Minor Programs Design Thinking introduces students to new and creative ways to solve problems. Through the lens of design thinking, students learn a range of creative ways to look at problems, to visualize solutions, to communicate ideas and to engage others. The minor consists of 15 credit hours. Entrepreneurship & Innovation is a collaboration between Fisher College of Business, the College of Engineering and Department of Design. This interdisciplinary minor supports students who want to explore how to capture the economic value of innovative ideas for commercially viable products and services.
COMPETITIVE ADMISSION PROGRAM Once you’re admitted to Ohio State, here’s what’s next: • Students enroll directly in the College of Arts and Sciences and declare the design program they’re interested in. • The Department of Design accepts students into our Design Foundations program for their first year of study. • After the first year, students go through an entrance review for acceptance into their design major. Because of this degree, I am settled into a job and career that I adore so much. I wouldn’t trade it for anything and I am happy to say I’m a Buckeye For Life! — Allison Fisk, Interior Design, 2015 (Production Designer at Shremshock: Architects & Engineers)
CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Ohio State offers many opportunities for students to learn and grow outside of the classroom. These range from internships to study abroad programs to student organizations and Honors & Scholars programs. Internships place students in professional environments while they are Ohio State students. Design students are encouraged to explore their interests, define a career goal and receive invaluable work experience through an internship offered either on- or off-campus, in the community or further afield. Our students have worked at companies ranging from Abercrombie & Fitch to Design Central, Stanley Black and Decker, and Walt Disney Imagineering.
Study Abroad There are many opportunities for international study – it’s something that has been a long tradition in design education at Ohio State. While not required, we truly hope all students will consider building in a semester-long exchange with an international design school. We believe all design in the 21st century is apt to be global in nature.

One of the most valuable things I learned at Ohio State was that to be successful designers we had to change the way we think. The greatest value comes from strategic thinking and creating that ‘big idea’ or original concept. — Jordan Hamm, Visual Communication Design, 2010 (Senior Art Director at Homeside Financial)
