Presented through the lens of 1960s Italian cinema auteur Federico Fellini (La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2), this “opera of all operas” explores opposing elements of the human condition. How far will we go to get what we want? What do we do when our societal conventions and moralities are challenged? Where is the line between our masculine and feminine instincts? Samantha Parker Salazar, a post-MFA scholar, has been awarded the John Fergus Family Post-MFA Fellowship in the Visual Arts, an annual, internationally competitive fellowship that gives artists the opportunity to work in a studio at Ohio State and teach, lecture and exhibit at the university. Salazar creates large-scale, intricate installations from printed and cut paper, often designed for a specific location. Through a vortex of cut forms, the line and movement in her work become reflections Samantha Parker Salazar on beauty, destruction and potential. Salazar’s work will be featured in the Fergus Fellowship Exhibition at Urban Arts Space Jan. 10-29; reception Jan. 24, 5-7 p.m.
“The works I am preparing for Urban Arts Space are fresh takes on the surrounding environment in Columbus – inspired by Whetstone Park and various trails and gardens,” she explained. “The centerpiece for my show will be an installation that rises up into the gallery windows, considering vantage points from the interior and exterior of the space.” Salazar, who says the fellowship has given her the rare opportunity to work in the studio full time and explore the potential of her artistic practice, also will be conducting research at the Orton Geological Museum on campus, comparing the visual qualities of rocks with images of the universe. Following her fellowship, she will be a resident artist at the Frans Masereel Centrum in Kasterlee, Belgium. 18

PRINTER, PRINT THYSELF! design.osu.edu 20
Professor Valamanesh (standing, 2nd from left) and his second-year students.
STUDENTS BUILD SELF-REPLICATING 3D PRINTERS Last spring, two teams of second-year industrial design students designed and assembled two 3D printers. The students had the opportunity to build the printers through the Department of Design, in an industrial design class taught by Professor Roozbeh Valamanesh. The teams spent nearly two months in class researching, designing, building and modifying the printers to function properly. “The coolest thing was when it started working,” said student Emily Stokes. The interesting thing about these printers is their “self-replicating” nature according to Valamanesh. The two printers created this year will be used to create the parts needed to construct printers next year, and so on, creating a network of printers. The 3D printing project was made possible by funding from the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD); Valamanesh hopes to continue the project every year. by Molly Kime, student communications assistant
