STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
KYLEE SMITH:
BLACK FEMALE BODIES IN AMERICAN CULTURE Dance student Kylee Smith (BFA 2017) won the 2017 Denman Undergraduate Research Forum for the presentation of her research project, “Black female bodies in American culture and performance.” She is interested in using dance to evoke social commentary and change within society. Smith also says her artistry affects all aspects of her life, so there are few things that she feels cannot be related to dance. Some themes that keep arising in both her writing and dancing are race, identity, culture and community.
Smith graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BFA in dance and a minor in creative writing, and is just the 2nd generation of her family to graduate from college. “I’m so excited to be able to pursue my art full time. To be able to pour my time and energy into changing the world with my art. It’s my heart and soul.”

Three Columbus organizations committed to dance unite for Parallel Connections. This program will feature BalletMet performing master choreographer James Kudelka’s The Man in Black, set to the music of Johnny Cash, and Wexner Prize recipient William Forsythe’s dynamic and sophisticated Slingerland Pas de Deux. Department of Dance students will perform Wexner Center MinEvent, with selections drawn from the vast repertoire of dance icon Merce Cunningham, another recipient of the Wexner Prize. VISUALIZING THE EFFECTS OF THE SYRIAN WAR Ece Karaca, a graduate student in design from Ankara, Turkey, recently won first place in the 31st Hayes Research Forum, which showcases the innovative research being conducted by Ohio State graduate students. Karaca was recognized under the Arts for her thesis research, Interactive Data Visualization: An application used to illuminate the environmental effects of the Syrian War.Â
I’m very interested in information design and data visualization. While working on practiceled research, I focused on visualizing the environmental issues the Syrian war has caused. The original work is exhibited in an interactive format at ACCAD (Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design), and I demonstrated the project on a big-scale, multi-touch screen. 16 16
