WHO WE ARE At Ohio State history is alive, and it’s probably not what you expect. In today’s world where war, revolution, famine and social upheaval occur with frightening regularity, history is the key to understanding these crises. History is not a recitation of facts and names, but involves analysis and understanding. History is the sum total of the human experience, and that experience serves as a mirror reflecting today’s events. Our faculty travel the world conducting research and bring that wealth of knowledge and expertise back to the classroom. Their research topics are wide-ranging from environmental history, such as the history of water, to ancient history and the study of medieval monastaries. They are passionate about their teaching and research, and active in the process of historical inquiry.

HISTORY STUDIES AT OHIO STATE HELPED ME EXPAND MY KNOWLEDGE OF THE WORLD AROUND ME AS WELL AS BEING ABLE TO ADAPT TO NEW AND ALWAYS-CHANGING CIRCUMSTANCES. — Christopher Ryan (1989), Commercial Consultant

BOOKS BY FACULTY

The study of history helps our students discover the world — from revolution, religion and race to climate, conflict and diplomacy.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES IN HISTORY MAJOR The undergraduate major in history produces globally aware citizens with excellent research and communication skills. Students learn how the world came to be as it is today, discover ways to apply their knowledge to their own times, and develop their own original interpretations of events, past and present. MINOR The undergraduate minor complements other majors at Ohio State. Everything has a history. Every subject, every time period and every geographical region is open to historical study. The history minor provides students majoring in business, the arts, social science or STEM fields a different window on their chosen area(s) of study.

STUDYING HISTORY AT OHIO STATE HAS GIVEN ME THE TOOLS TO BE A CRITICAL, RATIONAL AND EFFECTIVE READER, AS WELL AS GIVING ME INVALUABLE INSIGHT INTO THE MODERN CONDITION. Dylan Aughe (2014)

FIND YOUR PATH IN HISTORY Each spring, many of the companies, organizations and government agencies at the university’s career fair recruit history majors. Why? A 2015 survey showed a strong preference among employers for job candidates who think critically, communicate clearly and solve complex problems — skills the history major will help you develop.
