EXPERIENCE THE WORLD THROUGH ART
HISTORY OF ART AT OHIO STATE
CHOOSE HISTORY OF ART AT OHIO STATE
ART HISTORY IS THE STUDY OF HUMAN CULTURE AND HISTORY THROUGH THE VISUAL ARTS. IT IS A CONSTANTLY EXPANDING DISCIPLINE WHOSE OBJECTS OF STUDY INCLUDE ALL FORMS OF ARTISTIC EXPRESSION — PAINTING, SCULPTURE, ARCHITECTURE, DRAWING, PRINTS, PHOTOGRAPHY, FILM, VIDEO AND PERFORMANCE ART. In the Department of History of Art, students experience the intimate, collaborative environment of a small liberal arts college while receiving the immense benefits of attending a large, prestigious university. With our small class sizes, hands-on advising, and opportunities for close working relationships with faculty and other students, the History of Art major provides students with the critical thinking, reading, writing and research skills that enable them to succeed both in college and beyond.

My job with the Cleveland Museum of Art afforded me the opportunity to learn about the other side of art history, namely art preservation and the displaying of art for public use, as well as the opportunity to work closely with — and even handle — works that I had learned about in my studies. — Nicholas Lux (BA, 2014)
BEYOND THE CLASSROOM Research We encourage our students to undertake their own research in the field; in courses, or as part of a senior thesis, students can apply for research funding from the college to explore works of art on-site in museums, galleries, libraries and archaeological sites, both in the United States and abroad. Many history of art students complete thesis projects and graduate with research distinction.
Internships
Many history of art students complete internships for course credit, at institutions both within Columbus and nationally. Our majors have interned at the Wexner Center for the Arts, the Columbus Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art and numerous local galleries.
Study Abroad History of art students are encouraged to study abroad. The department is currently planning study abroad courses in France, Italy and Japan. These enriching experiences allow students to experience art and culture on-site at some of the world’s most celebrated museums and monuments.

When you study art history, you begin to acquire the skills to identify patterns of human behavior. I cannot think of anything more beneficial to a would-be entrepreneur than that. Apart from being infinitely interesting and incredibly challenging, it is a superb foundation for a career and for a life well-lived. — Jeni Britton Bauer, former history of art student at Ohio State, and founder of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams
