CHOOSE LINGUISTICS AT OHIO STATE
THE DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS AT OHIO STATE IS A CREATIVE INTELLECTUAL COMMUNITY COMMITTED TO EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH, TEACHING AND OUTREACH. WE EXPLORE LANGUAGE IN ITS HISTORICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL DIMENSIONS. Linguistics is the scientific study of how language works. We investigate the components that all languages share including speech sounds, words, phrases, sentences and meanings. We explore how languages have changed over time, how they express cultural differences, how computers understand and use language, how the brain processes language and how children learn language. Some linguists are even interested in creating new languages.

MAJOR TRACKS Linguistics Majors There are two tracks for the linguistics major, each leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree. Track A is designed to give students familiarity with a broad range of subject areas in linguistics. Track B is appropriate for students interested in research and who plan to go on to graduate school in Linguistics and other areas of Cognitive and Neuro Sciences.
Linguistics Targeted Minors With the undergraduate advisor, students develop a targeted minor to connect with their major, often providing a multicultural component to many fields of study including engineering, psychology, speech and hearing, business, computer science and education. Each linguistics minor has flexibility so that chosen courses best complement the student’s major interests and goals.
ACTIVITIES IN LINGUISTICS The Underlings Club The Underlings is a club for undergraduate students interested in linguistics, meeting regularly to celebrate their mutual appreciation for language. The group hosts special events, including lectures by internationally noted linguists, and panels about graduate school, research and job opportunities.
Peer Mentoring Program New undergraduate students meet with current linguistics majors throughout the academic year to learn first-hand information about courses, instructors, the city and additional aspects of university life.
I’ve joined the Peace Corps and will be teaching English overseas. Linguistics has already helped me understand the difficulties in language learning and some tricks to make it easier.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The field of linguistics is very diverse and intersects with many areas, including anthropology, computer science, engineering, foreign language study, neurology, philosophy, sociology, and speech and hearing science. Your degree can provide the foundation for a broad range of jobs and careers, such as:

Students can learn more about these opportunities by talking with their linguistics instructors and academic advisor.

The linguistics program at Ohio State is what attracted me to become a Buckeye in the first place. I really felt a sense of “home.” The program is one of the top in the country; it’s quite comprehensive and well-rounded, and has world renowned faculty and researchers. The faculty were always quite thorough in clarifying difficult concepts — truly a shining example of how linguistics can impact all facets of your life. — Ferenc Janossy, (BA), Linguistics, 2016
