WHAT WILL I LEARN? Linguistics is the scientific study of how language works. We investigate how the world’s languages are similar and different in their speech sounds, words, phrases, sentences and meanings. We explore how languages have changed over time, how they express cultural differences, how computers understand and use language, how the brain processes language and how children learn language. Some linguists are even interested in creating new languages.
WHAT CAN I DO WITH MY DEGREE? The field of linguistics is very diverse and intersects with many areas, including anthropology, computer science, foreign language study, neuroscience, philosophy, sociology, and speech and hearing science. Your degree can provide the foundation for a broad range of jobs and careers, such as: foreign language teacher; publisher and writer; professional speech therapist; audiologist; teacher of English as a second language; interpreter or translator; librarian; researcher; and information technology professional — among many others!
