Dear Students,Colleagues and Friends, The 2017-2018 production season marks the third and final year of our current Master of Fine Arts student cohort, offers numerous opportunities for our talented undergraduates and welcomes a new faculty director to our department.

This year, our Master of Fine Arts in Acting program has two capstone experiences focused on performergenerated new work. The MFA Acting Outreach and Engagement Project in November features a world premiere developed in partnership with local veterans and their families. The piece promises to explore the dynamics and sacrifices made by our military families both today and in the past, through humor and pathos. In the spring, each individual MFA actor creates a solo work to be shared in the April Solo Festival. The nine MFA actors’ solos give insight into each student’s individual passion and performance skill set and celebrates their personal academic journeys. The nine solo pieces are performed in repertoire on alternating nights. We hope you choose to see all nine graduate actors perform on the Bowen stage, one last time. Our talented undergraduates will open our season with Comedy of Errors with the initial performances at CAPA’s Lincoln Theatre. They will then take it on tour to more than 14 elementary,
middle and high schools throughout central Ohio. On the main stage, Marisol takes a unique look at homelessness and societal breakdown; while Execution of Justice explores a timely event in our justice system … remember the “Twinkie defense.” These large cast productions create many student opportunities and become launching points for significant conversations in a variety of our classes. Execution of Justice also marks the Ohio State directorial debut of Assistant Professor Thomas Dugdale, who joins us from Texas. Tom was selected to become part of our faculty after an extensive international search. We look forward to him sharing his artistry and talent beyond the classroom with all of you. The “Raw Theatre” production of Dog Act removes nearly all design and technology
support, enabling the audience to truly focus on each actor’s portrayal and the playwright’s text. Playwright Liz Duffy Adams challenges us to imagine a postapocalyptic world and the challenges of successfully navigating life in the future. Student work on both stage and screen is also featured in our annual DigiEYE: Film/Video Screening, held at the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater and our Lab Series held in the New Works Lab of Drake Performance Center. These performances and screenings feature creativity at the highest level as our early career artists stretch themselves to tell effective stories, emotionally connect with audiences, and learn firsthand about what it takes to be an artist.

Comedy of Errors is believed to be one of Shakespeare’s earlier written plays, a humorous comedy about separated family and mistaken identity. This 60-minute version is intended to introduce young audiences to the joys of Shakespeare and his language. Ohio State Theatre returns to the Lincoln Theatre following the success of last year’s Macbeth. In association with CAPA and The Arts Initiative at Ohio State.

A post-apocalyptic vaudeville, Dog Act follows Zetta Stone, a traveling performer, and her companion Dog, a young man undergoing a voluntary species demotion, as they walk through the wilderness of the former Northeast U.S. with their little troupe. They are heading toward a gig in China, if they can find it — and if they can survive to reach it.

Execution of Justice By Emily Mann Directed by Tom Dugdale THURBER THEATRE WEDNESDAY, APRIL 4 - SATURDAY, APRIL 7 AT 7:30 PM SUNDAY, APRIL 8 AT 3 PM TUESDAY, APRIL 10 - FRIDAY, APRIL 13 AT 7:30 PM This docudrama on the assassinations of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected public official in the country, is based on court transcripts and public record dramatizing trial of this controversial case. Focus is on accused killer Dan White, a disgruntled former city supervisor and on the jury that chose to convict him not of coldblooded murder but manslaughter, which became known as the notorious “Twinkie defense.”

STUDENT WORKS The Lab Series NEW WORKS LAB Performances begin at 7 p.m. and are free and open to the public. The Lab Series is a student-driven, department-nurtured production series. Productions can occur in a variety of campus spaces, including the New Works Lab. Emphasis is on innovative work that functions on a zero budget model.
