2014 COWGIRL TENNIS GREENWOOD TENNIS CENTER By Kelli Grashel
Oklahoma State Media Relations
The Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center, the second major project in Oklahoma State University’s Athletic Village, was unveiled in January with the indoor portion of the complex hosting its first varsity matches. The outdoor courts are also scheduled to open during the spring semester of 2014. The 50,000 square foot tennis center is located just north of Boone Pickens Stadium. The indoor facility houses six tennis courts, along with coaches’ offices, locker rooms, and a sports medicine hub complete with a hydrotherapy center. The indoor facilities are able to seat at least 350 spectators. The webcams inside the facility are another exciting feature, which allow OSU to live-stream matches onto the team’s website. The center will include 12 lighted outdoor tennis courts in two sets of six courts. The courts are set up to allow fan viewing of each match being played in both the indoor and outdoor venues. After a recent tour of the Greenwood Tennis Center, a tweet by the United States Tennis Association pronounced OSU’s new complex as one of the top two collegiate facilities in the country. OSU women’s head coach Chris Young says the Greenwood Center gives OSU the chance to host many tournaments. The first major event to be featured in Stillwater will be the 2014 ITA Central Regional Championships. Young says he will put in bids to host the Big 12 Championships and ultimately the NCAA Championship. “Through every stage of building the facility we have been able to talk to those selection committees, we ask them what things they are looking for to make sure we are including things that are going to be the most important when hosting championship events,” Young said. Michael and Anne Greenwood provided the lead gift for the multi-faceted tennis project. The Greenwoods are OSU alumni 5 who have supported the University in many ways. They began to follow OSU tennis when Anne’s father, Joe Morris, started attending matches in the late 1970s and eventually led the family to become OSU tennis fans.

2014 COWGIRL TENNIS GREENWOOD TENNIS CENTER The Greenwoods went to the OSU tennis coaches and OSU Athletic Director Mike Holder and offered their support for the new facilities. “Our OSU tennis coaches and players have had to practice and play in extreme heat, bitter cold and gale force winds,” Michael Greenwood said. “And whenever rain is involved, the teams have to leave Stillwater and find an indoor alternative or cancel the scheduled event. This has provided an unfair playing field for our dedicated student-athletes for over 40 years and we decided the time to correct this situation was long overdue.” The Greenwoods said the tennis center is not about them, but about taking OSU tennis to the next level of greatness. “When you look at the history of the program with its many conference championships over the years, the level of success is remarkable given the lack of facility infrastructure to support the program,” Anne Greenwood said. “We are already beginning to see the positive impact by the level of excitement being shown by players, coaches and fans that are part of OSU Tennis and its bright future.” The Greenwoods explain their financial support of the new facilities is to show appreciation to the coaches and players have provided the foundation for OSU Tennis. However, in designing the complex, they have tried to make it as fan-friendly as possible to promote attendance. “OSU Tennis has been a hidden gem in an obscure location. The new tennis facilities are world class in a central location that will make attending a tennis match an enjoyable experience,” the Greenwoods said. “We would encourage all students and alumni to come out and watch these amazing athletes represent OSU proudly and, along with us, live orange!”

2013 SEASON REVIEW
2014 COWGIRL TENNIS 2013 SEASON REVIEW The Oklahoma State women’s tennis team finished the 2013 season with its first NCAA second round appearance for the first time since 2002. The Cowgirls’ NCAA berth was the program’s 15th overall, and marked the first backto-back NCAA tournament appearance for the first time since the 1990 and 1991 seasons. In his fourth year as the head of the program, Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young led the Cowgirls to a 16-9 overall record. The Cowgirls’ 16 wins were the most for the team since 2007. The Cowgirls kicked off their 2013 campaign with a 7-0 sweep of No. 62 Wichita State in Wichita, Kan., on January 21. After a tough loss to No. 70 Georgia State at ITA Kickoff Weekend in Athens, Ga., Oklahoma State rattled off five straight wins, including victories over No. 37 Arkansas and No. 41 Minnesota, followed by an impressive 6-1 rout of 26th-ranked Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss. In 2013, the Cowgirls defeated 12 ranked opponents and seven opponents ranked in the top 40. Perhaps the Cowgirls’ biggest win this season came against 12th-ranked Nebraska in San Diego, Calif., in March. In the match, the Cowgirls defeated the Cornhuskers, 5-2, led by impressive performances from senior Malika Rose in both singles and doubles.

The Cowgirls ended the regular season with an epic 4-3 victory over No. 36 Oklahoma on Senior Day in Stillwater. In doubles, Meghan Blevins and Karyn Guttormsen fought back after trailing 7-4 on two to eventually take the match in a tiebreaker and clinch the doubles point for Oklahoma State. Blevins would clinch the match for the Cowgirls with an impressive triumph over Oklahoma’s Whitney Ritchie, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(4), on two. The win over the Sooners locked Oklahoma State into the Big 12’s fifth seed going into the conference tournament the following weekend. The Cowgirls made the program’s deepest run into the Big 12 tournament in 10 years with a 4-2 win over fourth-seeded TCU, and an exciting victory over top seed and 19th-ranked Baylor that was capped off by sophomore Karyn Guttormsen with a three-set win on six to clinch the match and send Oklahoma State to the conference championship for the first time since 2003; however; the Cowgirls fell, 4-0, to the No. 3 seed Texas in the Big 12 championship the next day. The Cowgirls received a bid to play as the second seed in the NCAA tournament’s Los Angeles regional. The team defeated No. 3 seed Long Beach State, 4-0, in the first round, but fell, 4-0, in the second round of the NCAA tournament to top-seeded and seventh-ranked UCLA. The team wrapped up the season ranked No. 28 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s national team rankings. Malika Rose notched a 10-13 record playing in the one spot for the Cowgirls last season. Rose defeated four top 50 opponents in 2013. The senior was instrumental in the Cowgirls’ 5-2 win over No. 12 Nebraska. Rose teamed up with junior Kanyapat Narattana to down Nebraska’s No. 1 doubles team that was ranked as the No. 7 doubles team in the nation. In singles play Rose handed 10th-ranked Mary Weatherholt of Nebraska her first loss of the season during the Cowgirls’ clash with Nebraska. Rose’s performance in San Diego against Nebraska and Illinois earned the Cowgirl her first Big 12 Player of the Week award. Rose and Narattana finished the 2013 season as the 30th-ranked doubles team in the nation. The Cowgirl duo knocked off five ranked doubles teams, three of which were ranked in the top 20. The tandem went 11-9 playing in the one spot for Oklahoma State, and were selected to the All-Big 12 team. Rose and Narattana wrapped up the season at the NCAA Championships in Champaign, Ill., in May. The pair knocked off its first opponent to advance to the round of 16, but was defeated by the second-ranked doubles team of USC’s Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria. Senior C.C. Sardinha earned an 11-13 mark in 2013, playing predominately at court three for the Cowgirls. Sardinha grabbed the match-clinching win for Oklahoma State in the Cowgirls’ first round match against Long Beach State, defeating Sarah Cantlay, 6-0, 6-3 on three. Sardinha teamed up with freshman Maria Alvarez in doubles play for much of 2013. The pair was big for the Cowgirls on doubles court three, going 10-6 on the season. Sardinha performed well in the classroom as well, earning a first-team Academic AllBig 12 honor. Maria Alvarez notched a 15-8 record in dual matches after going 8-5 in the fall, giving the freshman 23 overall wins on the season and making her the seventh most winning freshman in a single season in school history, and fourth most winning Cowgirl freshman in the Big 12 era. Alvarez is the tenth freshman in school history to reach the single-season 20-win mark. With four players from the 2013 roster returning and the fourth-ranked recruiting class in the nation, Chris Young and the Cowgirls look to take the college tennis world by storm in 2014 and the years to come.

The No. 40 Oklahoma State women’s tennis team notched their first victory of the season with a 7-0 win over Wichita State in Wichita, Kan.
Oklahoma State’s women’s tennis team fell just short in their first ITA Kickoff Weekend match against Georgia State, falling to the Panthers, 4-3.
Oklahoma State (1-0) fell behind early in doubles as Montse Blasco Fernandez and Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul of Wichita State defeated Oklahoma State’s Maria Alvarez and Lorena Gheorghe; however, Malika Rose and Kanyapat Narattana grabbed the 8-6 victory on court one. Meghan Blevins and Karyn Guttormsen clinched the doubles point for the Cowgirls with an 8-4 win over Wichita State’s Carla Venticinque and Rebecca Pedrazzi.
Oklahoma State (1-1) fell behind early, losing two doubles matches and giving the doubles point to Georgia State. Maria Alvarez and Lorena Gheorghe defeated Jocelyn Ffriend and Linn Timmermann of Georgia State, 8-7, to earn the only doubles win of the day for the Cowgirls.
In singles, Rose fell behind by three games in her first set, but stormed back to take the set and the match 6-3, 6-2. Shortly after, Blevins and Alvarez won their matches 6-3, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-1, respectively, to make the team score 4-0 and clinch the victory for the Cowgirls. After being held scoreless in her first set, Sardinha came back to defeat Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul 0-6, 6-4, (10-8). Narattana and Gheorghe added two more points to the Cowgirls’ score with 4-6, 6-1, (10-5) and 6-3, 6-2 wins, respectively. “This was a great way to start the season against a ranked opponent on the road,” said Cowgirl Tennis coach Chris Young. “Our girls have been working hard, and today they played with confidence because of that. This match definitely helps us prepare for a tough weekend coming up.”
In singles, the Panthers won their first two singles matches to build their lead to 3-0. In those matches, Malika Rose fell to No. 29 Abigail Tere-Apisah in two sets while Georgia State’s Whitney Byrd came back from losing 6-3 in the first set to grab the victory from senior C.C. Sardinha in three sets. With their backs against the wall early, the Cowgirls refused to go down without a fight. Freshman Maria Alvarez came through for Oklahoma State, defeating Linn Timmermann, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Oklahoma State’s women’s tennis team earned its second win of the weekend with a 4-3 win over the 37th-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks at The Greens Country Club in Oklahoma City.
Oklahoma State’s women’s tennis team notched its fifth victory of the season, upsetting No. 26 Ole Miss 6-1 in Oxford, Miss.
No. 42 Oklahoma State (4-1) fell behind early, losing the doubles point to the Razorbacks. Malika Rose and Kanyapat Narattana took the second doubles match 8-4 after Yang Pang and Brittany Huxley of Arkansas defeated Cowgirls Meghan Blevins and Karyn Guttormsen.
No. 36 Oklahoma State (5-1) went up 1-0 early on the Rebels, with Meghan Blevins and Karyn Guttormsen winning their match on two, 8-5, and Maria Alvarez and Lorena Gheorghe recording the 8-5 victory on three.
After falling behind 6-3 on the third court, Maria Alvarez and Lorena Gheorghe nearly came back to tie the match at seven games a piece, but Kimberly Ann-Surin and Sarah McLean of Arkansas were able to withstand the Cowgirl rally, taking the 8-6 victory.
Mississippi tied the match back up at one a piece in singles play, however, as Marija Milutinovic defeated Cowgirl junior Kanyapat Narattana 6-1, 6-4 in the fifth spot.
Behind 1-0 to the Razorbacks, the Cowgirls turned it around in singles play. After an impressive performance over Minnesota on Saturday, senior C.C. Sardinha was a dominant force on Sunday as well, grabbing the 6-0, 6-3 victory over Sarah McLean of Arkansas and tying the match at one point a piece. Oklahoma State freshman Maria Alvarez defeated Kimberly-Ann Surin 7-5, 7-5 in the fourth spot to notch her fifth victory of the season, giving her a 5-0 singles record in the spring. Kanyapat Narattana and Malika Rose also won their matches in straight sets, adding to the Cowgirls’ powerful performance. Rose and Narattana won their matches 7-5, 6-4 and 7-5, 6-0, respectively. After taking her first set of the day in a tiebreaker, Cowgirl sophomore Meghan Blevins battled hard, but was overcome by Claudine Paulson 7-6 (4), 7-5, 11-9. Karyn Guttormsen took a tough loss as well, falling to Ana Hernandez 7-6(0), 6-1. “Over my four seasons here at OSU, it’s been nice to see us steadily progress in our matches with Arkansas,” senior Malika Rose said. “We’ve always gotten closer and closer to beating them every year, so it was nice to finally get a win.” “It was a great win for our girls and our program,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “Our girls responded well after losing the doubles point and played15 well in critical moments as the first sets were all tight. The hard work is paying off and I am excited to see the girls continue to progress throughout the season.”

From that point on, the Cowgirls dominated, winning all five remaining singles matches. Senior C.C. Sardinha was the first Cowgirl to notch a singles point, defeating Erin Stephens of Ole Miss in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Blevins bounced back from winning only one game in her second set to easily defeat Mississippi’s Mai El Kamash in the third set and take the victory 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. Karyn Guttormsen clinched the match for the Cowgirls when she defeated Vief Vlaar 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 in the sixth spot. Perhaps the two most impressive singles victories for the Cowgirls came with the match already in hand. Alvarez rallied from being down 4-1 in her third set to take the set and the match from Mississippi’s Julia Jones, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. Cowgirl senior Malika Rose provided the highlight of the day, battling with 27th-ranked Caroline Rohde-Moe of Mississippi for three sets in an epic match. Oklahoma State’s women’s tennis team notched its eighth win of the season with a 4-3 victory over 47th-ranked Illinois.
Oklahoma State’s women’s tennis team wrapped up its week in San Diego with a 5-2 upset win over No. 12 Nebraska.
No. 35 Oklahoma State (8-3) took the early lead after winning the doubles point with two big wins on courts one and two. Malika Rose and Kanyapat Narattana took down the 17th-ranked doubles team in the nation in Melissa Kopinski and Rachael White, 8-6, to start off doubles play. Cowgirls Meghan Blevins and Karyn Guttormsen would clinch the point for Oklahoma State when they won their match, despite falling down 5-1 in the tiebreaker.
The 35th-ranked Cowgirls (9-3, 1-1 Big 12) took control of the match early, winning the doubles point with victories on courts one and three. Malika Rose and Kanyapat Narattana took down their second straight ranked doubles team when they edged the 7th-ranked tandem of Patricia Veresova and Mary Weatherholt, 8-5, in the one spot. Cowgirls C.C. Sardinha and Maria Alvarez notched the doubles win on court three, defeating Izabella Zgierska and Maggy Lehmicke, 9-7.
Illinois tied the match at one in singles play when Allison Falkin defeated Malika Rose, 6-0, 6-3 in the one spot. The Cowgirls responded by adding two straight set wins from Meghan Blevins and Karyn Guttormsen on courts two and six, respectively, to bring the Cowgirl lead to two.
Senior Malika Rose continued her spectacular performance in singles play when she knocked off 10th-ranked Mary Weatherholt on court one. The victory was Rose’s third win against ranked competition this season. Kanyapat Narattana also turned in an excellent match in singles play, grabbing a 6-2, 6-2 win over Nebraska’s Janine Weinreich in the fifth spot.
The Illini would add another point to their score before the match was clinched for the Cowgirls, however. Misia Kedzierski of Illinois defeated Kanyapat Narattana, 6-2, 7-5. The match was clinched for the Cowgirls when C.C. Sardinha stormed back from losing her first set to take the match, 1-6, 6-4, 6-0, on the third court. The final point of the match was awarded to Illinois after Maria Alvarez retired on court four. “I’m proud of the way we competed today,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “Illinois played a good match and made every match tough for us, but our girls found a way to get it done, and I’m proud of that.”
Maria Alvarez notched another victory for Oklahoma State on Thursday, defeating Maggy Lehmicke in straight sets on four, 6-4, 6-4. Karyn Guttormsen would seal the upset for the Cowgirls when she downed Izabella Zgierska of Nebraska, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, in the fifth spot. “I’m proud of this team,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “They continue to grind out matches and show the character and toughness that our program believes in. This was a team win because everyone contributed and competed. Malika had an exceptionally good day with two ranked wins, but you can’t forget about Karyn who clinched the match or the other girls who put us in a position to win because of their victories.” “This is one of the biggest wins for our program so we will enjoy it and the success of our trip,” Young said. “We also want to thank Madeline Pickens and the entire family at Del Mar for hosting us this week, they gave us a great experience for the two matches.”

The girls did a good job taking care of business today.”
The Sooners would storm back in singles play, rattling off four straight wins to clinch the match early. Brhane defeated Rose on one, 6-1, 7-5. Oklahoma scored another point shortly after when Whitney Wofford beat freshman Cowgirl Maria Alvarez on four, 6-3, 6-1. Meghan Blevins and C.C. Oklahoma State’s women’s tennis team, led by an impressive performance by sophomore Meghan Blevins, knocked off the 36thranked Oklahoma Sooners in an intense 4-3 match on Senior Day in StillwateR. The Cowgirls (13-7, 5-4 Big 12) took the lead early by notching victories on doubles courts two and three to take the doubles point. Meghan Blevins and Karyn Guttormsen fought back after trailing 7-4 on two to eventually take the match in a tiebreaker and clinch the point for Oklahoma State. The Cowgirls added a point to their lead when junior Kanyapat Narattana defeated Oklahoma’s Whitney Wofford, 6-2, 6-0 on four. Shortly after, however, the Sooners would put themselves on the board with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Cowgirl Karyn Guttormsen on six. Oklahoma tied the match at two after Mia Lancaster took down Oklahoma State senior C.C. Sardinha, 6-3, 6-3, on three. After the two straight Sooner wins, freshman Maria Alvarez recorded a crucial point for the Cowgirls, defeating Abby Melrose in the fifth spot, 6-2, 7-5, despite trailing much of her second set.
“There were a lot of things to learn from in this match,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “It was a tough loss, but we will work hard this week to be ready for Oklahoma next weekend.”
Malika Rose lost a tough match on court one to Oklahoma’s Hermon Brhane in three sets, allowing the Sooners to tie the match at three. To think that the doubles point was a key point in the match, and it could have been so easy for the girls to put that one in the bank and move onto singles. We just had things go our way and made some good tactical decisions that really changed the momentum. Our girls stepped up and made plays when they needed to.”

Oklahoma State’s women’s tennis team defeated fourthseeded TCU, 4-2, in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championships in Norman, Okla. With the win, the Cowgirls will appear in the conference tournament semifinals for the first time since 2007. The Cowgirls (14-7) notched the first point of the match when Kanyapat Narattana defeated Monika Sirilova in straight sets on five, 6-1, 6-2. The Horned Frogs responded with a point of their own, however, when Simona Parajova of TCU defeated Cowgirl C.C. Sardinha, 6-2, 7-5. TCU took the lead when Stefanie Tan took the victory over Oklahoma State’s Malika Rose on court one after winning the second and third sets.
Oklahoma State’s women’s tennis team has advanced to the conference championship for the first time in 10 years after upsetting 19th-ranked and top-seeded Baylor, 4-3, in Norman, Okla. Karyn Guttormsen clinched the victory for the Cowgirls in a thriller of a three-set win on six. The Cowgirls (15-7) opened up the match by taking the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Meghan Blevins and Lorena Gheorghe notched the 8-6 win on two. C.C. Sardinha and Maria Alvarez clinched the point with an 8-6 victory on doubles court three. The two teams were neck-and-neck from that point on, trading matches throughout the duration of singles play. The Bears recorded the first singles win on three when Baylor’s Kiah Generette defeated Cowgirl C.C. Sardinha, 6-2, 6-3, tying the match at 1-1. Shortly after, Kanyapat Narattana responded with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph on four to regain the lead for Oklahoma State. After being shut out by tenth-ranked Ema Burgic in her first set, Cowgirl senior Malika Rose bounced back to win her second set, 6-4, but was outlasted in the third, allowing Baylor to tie the score at 2-2.
The Horned Frog advantage was short-lived, however. The Cowgirls rattled off three straight wins on courts six, two and five, respectively, to clinch the match. Karyn Guttormsen defeated Millie Nichols on six, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, in the sixth spot to tie the match at two. Meghan Blevins followed her impressive performance against Oklahoma with another exciting victory on Friday, defeating TCU’s Olivia Smith, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Freshman Maria Alvarez came through for the Cowgirls in the fifth spot, defeating Alex Leatu in straight sets; however the lead wouldn’t last long. Baylor’s Jordaan Sanford tied the match yet again when she knocked off Meghan Blevins on two.
After losing a tough tiebreaker in the first set, freshman Maria Alvarez stormed back to win her second and third sets to notch a 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-3 win over Federica Denti on five, and seal the match for the Cowgirls.
“I think the biggest thing, at the end, was Karyn (Guttormsen) just had to trust her game,” Cowgirl Tennis coach Chris Young said. “To (Alex Clay)’s credit, she made Karyn earn every point. Karyn stepped up when she needed to and made the shots. The last couple weeks, we’ve talked to the girls about just trusting their game, trusting your shots and believing you can execute. That’s what we kept yelling out to her and that’s what she did.”
“This was a big win for us,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “We lost to this team a couple weeks ago and we had three girls win that lost last time. So to turn around three matches that two weeks ago we were losing was really big. 23 Last time we won the doubles point and came out slow in singles. This time we came out with really good energy and the girls competed all the way through.”

Sophomore Karyn Guttormsen clinched the match for Oklahoma State with an impressive three set win over Alex Clay on six. Guttormsen rebounded from losing her first set by taking her second and third sets to finish off the Bears.
“It’s kind of like a redemption weekend for us,” Young said. “We knew we had to beat three teams this weekend that we hadn’t beat before. We hadn’t beat Baylor in 12 years, so that was a big step for us. Texas got us earlier in the year, but I think we’re a much better team than we were earlier in the season. We’re confident. We’re going to go in and these girls are going to compete. That’s all I can ask for.”

Oklahoma State’s women’s tennis team suffered a tough loss in the Big 12 Championship match, falling, 4-0, to the thirdseeded and 25th-ranked Texas Longhorns in Norman, Okla.
Oklahoma State’s women’s tennis team defeated Long Beach State, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to advance in the tournament for the first time since 2001.
“Texas played a great match,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “Texas was the better team. I wish we had our legs under us a little bit more. The girls just gave everything they had yesterday.”
The Cowgirls (16-8) took the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Senior C.C. Sardinha and freshman Maria Alvarez controlled their match on three, defeating Anna Jeczmionka and Anne-Sophie Willems of Long Beach State, 8-3. Meghan Blevins and Lorena Gheorghe won three straight games after trailing 7-6 to take the 9-7 victory on two and clinch the point for Oklahoma State.
The Cowgirls (15-8) fell behind early, giving up the doubles point with losses on doubles courts two and three. After trailing on all three courts early in doubles play, each Oklahoma State doubles team would fight their way back to even the score, but the Cowgirls were eventually outmatched, giving the Longhorns the early lead. In singles play, Texas rattled off three straight wins on one, two and six to seal the victory over Oklahoma State. The Longhorns opened up singles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Cowgirl sophomore Karyn Guttormsen on six. Shortly after, Oklahoma State’s Meghan Blevins was defeated, 6-2, 6-0 in the second spot by Breaunna Addison to put the Cowgirls’ backs against the wall. Texas clinched the match when Ariel Ellis knocked off Cowgirl senior Malika Rose on court one, 6-4, 6-2. “Our girls competed hard today,” Young said. “I think we gave a good effort. We just didn’t have enough left after two really difficult days. Texas just played great. They’re a tough team, so I give credit to them.”

2014 PREVIEW
2014 COWGIRL TENNIS 2013 FALL REVIEW & 2014 SPRING PREVIEW This fall was the most successful in recent years for Oklahoma State, with three Cowgirls, including two freshmen, recording nine or more wins. The Cowgirls posted a combined 40-36 record in singles while notching a 12-15 mark in doubles. “I think that we’ve progressed as a whole because we’ve found a lot more depth this year. I think that strength at the top of our lineup is something we haven’t had,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “I think that Kanyapat (Narattana) and Megan (McCray) both established themselves as the top of the line as far as our players go, so I think that will only add to the strength of our lineup. Those girls have proven they can play with anybody.” Cowgirl senior Kanyapat Narattana was dominant in tournament appearances this fall, going 10-5 on the year. Narattana also provided the highlight of the fall season when she knocked off No. 47 Hermon Brhane of Oklahoma in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Championship final to take the regional singles title and become the first Cowgirl to qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships. At National Indoors, the senior defeated the highest ranked opponent of her collegiate career in 26th-ranked Nadia Ravita of Kentucky in the round of 32. Narattana advanced to the tournament’s round of 16 where she stole six games from the top-ranked player in the nation, USC’s Sabrina Santamaria, but was outlasted, 6-3, 6-3. The loss wrapped up an impressive fall season that saw Narattana defeat four of six ranked opponents. Narattana finished the fall strong, having won nine of her last ten matches.
Kanyapat Narattana and Carla Tur Mari were slotted at No. 47 in the ITA preseason doubles rankings to begin the season. The Cowgirl duo recorded three wins at the Mizzou Invitational, including an 8-5 triumph over the 32nd-ranked tandem of Missouri’s Elisha Gabb and Cierra Gaytan-Leach, to take the tournament’s doubles championship. Narattana and Tur Mari also advanced to the quarterfinals at the USTA Clay Court Classic. In other doubles action, Karyn Guttormsen and Maria Alvarez teamed up to go 6-3 on the fall. Freshmen Megan McCray and Morgan McCray joined forces at the Mizzou Invitational to take two of three matches. “We want to continue to build on what we did last year, making and advancing in the NCAA tournament and being competitive in the Big 12 Conference,” Young said. “Every year now, we want to compete for the Big 12 title, make the NCAA tournament and look to advance once we get there, so that’s what our expectations are. The team is definitely more talented this season than before, and hopefully that will produce more results.”
Freshman Megan McCray also had a strong performance in her first collegiate fall season, notching an 11-4 record in singles competition and a 6-2 mark against ranked opponents. At the Mizzou Invitational in Kansas City, Mo., only her second collegiate event, McCray won three matches to take the tournament singles title. The freshman Cowgirl followed up the win with a run to the quarterfinals at the ITA Regional Championships, although she was knocked off by the eventual runner-up Hermon Brhane of Oklahoma in a three-set battle. McCray finished her 2013 tournament season at the United States Tennis Association Clay Court Classic in Orlando, Fla., where she upended three opponents, including No. 46 Daneika Borthwick of Florida State, to advance to the semifinals. Carla Tur Mari also impressed in her first tournament season as a Cowgirl. Tur Mari went 9-7 in singles matches, with six of her wins coming in straight sets. Tur Mari’s biggest win of the fall came at the Duke Invitational against No. 78 Marianne Jodoin of Duke in the consolation third place bracket. The freshman defeated Jodoin in a tight three-set match, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(6). Freshman Morgan McCray grabbed her first collegiate victory at the Mizzou Invitational when she knocked off Nebraska’s Katerina Matysova, 6-3, 6-0, in her first match as a Cowgirl. McCray finished the fall with a 2-3 record in singles.

Oklahoma Christian, 2000 Career: 238-140 (10th year) Record at OSU: 48-45 (5th year) Chris Young is entering his fifth season as the head coach of the Oklahoma State women’s tennis program. After spending five years as the Wichita State Director of Tennis, Young returned four seasons ago to his home state where he competed as a collegian and began his coaching career. A native of Norman, Okla., Young has compiled a career record of 238-140, directing the OSU women and the men’s and women’s programs at both Wichita State and his alma mater, Oklahoma Christian. Young coached the Cowgirls to a 16-9 overall record in 2013. The team notched 11 wins over ranked opponents, including a 5-2 victory over No. 12 Nebraska in San Diego, Calif., in March. Oklahoma State competed as the fifth seed in the Big 12 tournament after recording a 5-4 mark in conference play for the second straight year.
as a bid to the Tuscaloosa Regional in the NCAA Tournament. OSU fell in its first match of each tournament. Under Young’s direction, Meghan Blevins was named ITA Central Region Rookie of the Year in 2012. The 2011 Cowgirls finished the season with an 8-16 record; however, the team made it to the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship for the second straight year, edging out Missouri before eventually losing to top-seeded Baylor. In his first year as OSU, Young led the Cowgirls to a 13-10 finish, their best in three years, and picked up his milestone 200th career coaching win. Young’s coaching prowess was evident as his 2010 Cowgirls reached the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship and received several individual accolades. His athletes earned a Big 12 Newcomer of the Year award, a No. 4 singles Big 12 cochampionship and a doubles spot on the all-conference team. He also earned his second USTA/ITA Campus and Community Outreach Award in 2010, as he was honored for his work in promoting tennis to the community.
In 2013, Young’s Cowgirls made the program’s deepest run into the Big 12 tournament in 10 years with a 4-2 win over fourth-seeded TCU, and an exciting victory over top seed and 19th-ranked Baylor to send Oklahoma State to the conference championship for the first time since 2003; however; the Cowgirls fell, 4-0, to the No. 3 seed Texas in the Big 12 championship the next day. The Cowgirls earned back-to-back NCAA tournament bids in 2012 and 2013, for the first time since the 1990 and 1991 seasons. In 2013, Young also coached the Cowgirl doubles team of Malika Rose and Kanyapat Narattana to an NCAA doubles tournament appearance. During Young’s four years at Oklahoma State, he has overseen six Academic All-Big 12 selections, two ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award Recipients and one ITA Rookie of the Year selection. 31 Oklahoma State finished with an 11-10 record in Young’s third season. The Cowgirl program saw its biggest win ever in 2012 when the team defeated No. 6 Texas for the fourth time in history. As a result, the Cowgirls received a No. 5 seeding and a spot in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championships, as well

2014 COWGIRL TENNIS HEAD COACH CHRIS YOUNG During his time in Wichita, Young led the women’s squad to a 94-38 mark, including a 33-6 ledger in Missouri Valley Conference play. A three-time conference coach of the year selection, Young guided the Shockers to league crowns in 2006, 2007 and 2009. Those seasons also resulted in the first three NCAA Tournament appearances in school history. Young took a program that had never held a national ranking or defeated a ranked opponent and transformed the Shockers into a squad that was ranked for 43-straight weeks and defeated more than 20 ranked opponents under his direction.
and tallied a 58-38 record. His 2008 squad recorded 19 wins and achieved the program’s highest ranking in 10 years. Individually, he coached nine all-conference singles players, two all-league doubles teams and produced two MVC ScholarAthlete selections. Prior to taking over the Shocker program, Young worked as the assistant men’s and women’s coach at Oklahoma Christian University, including a stint as the interim head coach for both programs in 2002.
The 2008-09 campaign saw Young’s squad post a 21-6 mark and capture its third league title in four seasons. Individually, his players won 65 of their 68 individual matches in MVC action.
He took charge of the women’s program in 2003 before adding the OC men’s head coaching position to his list of duties the following year. The 2003 season also resulted in a national championship on the men’s side.
The fruits of his off-court work began to show as well as the Shockers finished the year ranked in the top 10 nationally in attendance.
During his time at Oklahoma Christian, the Eagles had 20 players receive NAIA All-America honors, including eight with Young as head coach.
The Shockers narrowly missed their third-straight conference title in 2008, finishing the year with a 16-8 mark and a runnerup finish at the MVC Tournament.
The 2004 season saw Young garner both the men’s and women’s conference coach of the year honors in addition to his recognition as the NAIA Region VI Women’s Coach of the Year.
Young’s third season at WSU proved to be one for the history books as his charges produced a school-record 27-3 mark and became the first MVC squad to win an NCAA Tournament match. The Shockers knocked off 25th-ranked South Carolina in the first round to secure the school’s first NCAA victory. Additionally, the Shockers climbed to No. 16 in the national rankings, making them the highest ranked team in the history of the MVC.
Young’s coaching career got underway in 1999 in Ardmore, Okla., where he served as a teaching pro and assistant coach at Ardmore High School.
Five Shockers earned all-conference honors, including Madina Rakhim, who finished the year with a 29-2 mark at the No. 1 singles position. The Shockers were dominant up and down their lineup, finishing with a 66-1 record in their individual conference matches.
As a player, Young earned three letters from Oklahoma Christian and helped the Eagles to top-five national finishes in each of his three seasons. A 2000 graduate of Oklahoma Christian, Young and his wife, Sarah, have two children, Braden and Kelsy.
For his efforts, Young was named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year. The 2007 campaign also saw him earn the USTA/ITA National Award for Community Service. The 2004-05 campaign, WSU’s first under Young, resulted in immediate progress. The Shockers finished with a 13-13 mark, giving them their highest win total in seven years and providing an indicator of the program’s bright future. Young produced 17 all-conference singles players, nine allleague doubles performers. His squads also emphasized their work in the classroom with 16 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes dotting his rosters. From 2005-08, Young also steered the Shocker men’s program
