KAYSE SHRUM, D.O., PROVOST, OSU CENTER FOR HEALTH SCIENCES DEAN, COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE AND PROFESSOR OF PEDIATRICS

College of Osteopathic Medicine »» Founded by the state legislature in 1972 to provide primary care physicians to small towns and rural areas of Oklahoma. »» Merged with Oklahoma State University in 1988. »»

Consistently ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the best medical schools in the country…allopathic and osteopathic. For 2007, the weekly newsmagazine ranked the college 20th nationally in rural medicine and 45th in primary care. U.S. News also reported that the Center for Health Sciences ranked third in financial aid offered.

»» OSU medical students’ pass rate consistently leads the nation on the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners COMLEX Level 2 Performance Evaluation. Every osteopathic medical student must pass this test to graduate. »» OSU College of Medicine faculty frequently receive national recognition for outstanding work including the recent Distinguished Osteopathic Surgeon Award from the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons. »» Class size is 115 students annually with a current total student enrollment of 374 with 86 percent from Oklahoma. »» Has graduated more than 2,250 physicians. »» Two-thirds of the graduates practice in primary care and one-third practice in specialty areas such as dermatology, neurology, surgery, psychiatry, anesthesiology and gastroenterology. »» Partners with the OSU Medical Center, which serves as the largest osteopathic teaching center in the United States, training 151 resident physicians in primary and sub-specialty care each year. »» Operates six clinics in Tulsa totaling 125,000 patient visits annually, providing $3 million in indigent care to help fill Tulsa’s need.

Offers tele-medicine services: »» State’s largest telemedicine network connecting physicians to patients via the Internet. »» First American medical school requiring telemedicine education for all graduates. »» OSU Telemedicine Network is linked to more than 24 locations throughout Oklahoma, with plans to reach 55 communities within five years. »» Three OSU mobile clinics utilize a 39-foot bus and two large vans to provide specialty care in northeastern Oklahoma, visiting five locations monthly and attending health fairs and community events. »»

Staffed by a paramedic, an electronics and office assistant and a third-year OSU medical student, the buses contain a full exam room connected to specialists up to thousands of miles away to provide cardiology services, prenatal care, behavioral health consults and HIV/AIDS follow-up care, among other services.

Center for Rural Health »»

Mission is to improve healthcare in rural Oklahoma through student education; residency training; research; program applications; advocacy; and alliances with others who share its goals.

»» Oversees the rural rotations of third- and fourth year medical students »»

Funds programs to support Oklahoma’s rural practitioners, hospitals and clinics to ensure access to quality healthcare. Many of these services are free and provide important information not readily available to most rural communities.

»» Serves as a statewide clearinghouse for rural health information.

School of Forensic Sciences »» Accredited by FEPAC, the accrediting commission of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences— one of only 17 such graduate programs nationally. »» Offers a master’s degree with thesis and non- thesis options for specialization in DNA, document examination, pathology, psychology, toxicology and forensic science administration. »»

Provides research, testing and training on methods to deter, detect and defeat improvised explosives through the OSU Center for Improvised Explosives Research and Training (IMPEX),

»» Collaborates with the Tulsa Police Department (TPD) to offer an online class for certification as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner. »» Rated as a Top 10 “CSI” forensic science graduate program in the U.S. by Forensics-School.com. »»

Shares a facility with TPD’s crime lab, evidence room and training facilities. Only one other U.S. forensics program is in the same building as a working crime lab.

Partners with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, the Oklahoma Medical Examiner, the National Institute for Microbial Forensics and Food and Agricultural Biosecurity, and the Central Technology Center in providing training and outreach opportunities.

School of Biomedical Science »» Offers master’s and doctorates in anatomy, biochemistry, cell biology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology and physiology. »» Involves projects by faculty and investigative scientists translating molecular research into new medical therapies. »»

Current research includes seeking cures and advanced treatments for autism, cancer, HIV/ AIDS, cardiovascular diseases, upper respiratory illnesses, asthma, and Otitis Media (ear aches) in children. Other areas of original research include psychological factors in cardiovascular disease, endocrine factors of post-partum depression, chronic sub-clinical infections, and patented system of delivery for cognitive rehabilitation exercises.

»» Extramural funding for our research has increased five-fold during the past decade, most significantly in neuroscience.

School of Health Care Administration »» Offers graduate degrees in Natural and Applied Sciences Health Care Administration. »»

Will begin offering graduate degrees in Bioinformatics in Fall 2012. Bioinformatics is a growing interdisciplinary field combining biology, information technology and computer science. It is a driving force behind the discovery of drug targets responsible for shorter term-to-market for life-saving drugs and medical devices and is vital to the growth, commercialization and profitability of bio-industries and the development of biotechnology research.

»» Maintains a significant focus on administration in rural settings and specifically attracts rural students thought a distance learning option.
