Wesley Bush Biology
Undergraduate research fellowship
Ohio State Marion junior biology major Wesley Bush was named a Pelotonia Undergraduate Scholar by The James Comprehensive Cancer Center at Ohio State. The award is the sixth such honor since 2018 for Ohio State students working with Ohio State Marion faculty research mentors.
Bush shared that he is researching the fundamental mechanisms of cancer cells, providing a better understanding of how they operate that will allow the development of better drugs and therapies.
“I plan to pursue cancer research not only due to its massive humanitarian importance,” said Bush, “but also due to its unique character because of multicellular life. There is still so much to learn about how our own cells work, even when healthy, and the understanding gained through the fight against cancer will almost certainly benefit other fields of science and medicine.”

Students spearhead bilingual literacy initiative on Marion’s Tallgrass Trail
Students in Dr. Nikole Patson’s psychology 4554 language development service-learning course and Dr. Ben McCorkle’s English 4569 digital and English studies course partnered with representatives from Let’s Read 20 and Marion Public Library to officially launch a bilingual book walk literacy initiative for the people of the community on Marion’s Tall Grass Trail.
The idea of a bilingual book came to Harris when she was walking her dogs at Marion’s Tallgrass Trail and met a family reading the book they posted on the trail.
“I noticed that there was an older boy, and he was reading the book in Spanish to his younger sisters. So, I went up to him and I was like, are you translating the book for them? He was like, yeah, they don’t speak English, I am the only one in my family that speaks English, so I translated the book for them,” Harris explained.
“One of our major goals with the book walk was inclusivity,” Harris shared. “We decided on doing a bilingual book.”
Owen Peters Engineering Technology
First engineering technology graduates enter the workforce
In May of 2020, The Ohio State University Board of Trustees voted to approve a new major in engineering technology through the College of Engineering to be offered on Ohio State’s regional campuses.
Much like other students in the new major’s first cohort, spring 2024 engineering technology graduate, Owen Peters, officially accepted an offer prior to graduation from the Honda Engine Plant in Anna, Ohio. He will be a manufacturing engineer in the engineering development department.
“I am very proud of what my classmates and I were able to accomplish,” said Peters. “I think about what a historical university Ohio State is… the weight the name carries. To think we are a group of firsts is just an absolute honor to me. I am grateful and blessed for the opportunity that was given to me.”

Washington D.C. trip provides transformative STEP for Buckeyes
A group of ten Ohio State Marion students, who were recently part of the university’s Second-Year Transformational Experience Program (STEP) trip to Washington D.C. over spring break 2024, created bonds that will last throughout college and beyond.
Ohio State Marion sophomore Max Morrison said, “Before going to college, I was very closed off and kept to myself. The college experience got me out of my shell a little bit,” he shared, “but I truly believe I have STEP to thank for completely busting down the walls.”
“I have made some of the best friendships I have ever had because of STEP,” said Morrison. “I have learned so much, not only academically, but about myself. I know my fellow STEP cohort members and I made many close friendships, and now share deep insights, and great memories.”
