has managed to survive an economic collapse that was virtually driven by external factors. The party identified some of these factors as; the devastating crash of crude oil price in the international market; the vandalism that characterized PDP’s

management of the country’s economy in the last 16 years of civilian rule; and the mindbuggling corruption and virtual looting of the national treasury that prevailed during the PDP rule. The APC then declared that if these factors had not intervened to negatively impact the development projects initiated by Governor Aregbesola, the State of Osun would have been a model for most other states of the federation. “But in spite of this, the fact that the state is still managing to execute critical infrastructural projects, notwithstanding near zero allocation from the federation account, is eloquent testimony to the superior financial management approach of Governor Aregbesola. “Otherwise, there would have been no money anywhere to continue work on road projects and construction of new schools, which are being seen everywhere in the state today,” the party claimed. The APC further noted that responsible and reasonable citizens of the state, while lamenting the pains of the economic crash, do empathise with Aregbesola and wish him well on this solemn occasion of his birthday. The party then asserted: “When this storm finally clears, Ogbeni Aregbesola will be vindicated and his detractors will bow in shame.”

socio-economic youth group, Youth Solidarity (YS), has described as an act of mischief and hypocrisy, the petition of the Civil Society Coalition for the Emancipation of Osun (CSCEO) to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). In a statement signed by its Chairman, A d e m o l a O w o a d e and the Secretary,
Bolarinwa Wasiu, the YS said the civil society organisation was a s ponsored campaigner
with a pedigree for falsehood and rumour mongering to mislead the public. It said, the CSCEO demonstrated its act of
mischief, when it was invited by the EFCC to substantiate the allegations in its petition, saying, the coalition quickly posted on social media that President Muhammadu Buhari has asked the EFCC to investigate Aregbesola for fraud. According to the group, the CSCEO Coordinator

and Secretary, Adeniyi Alimi and Owoseeni respectively, are in the pay roll of Senator Omisore, who lost the 2014 governorship election to Aregbesola. The statement reads: “The CSCEO has further exposed its hypocrisy and mischief as an agent of destabilisation of good governance. “The coalition should be known, seen and taken for what it is; a sponsored hate campaigners with a pedigree for falsehood and rumour mongering. “The sole agenda of this group is to create distrust and disaffection between the state government and the people of Osun in order to foment trouble,”
it stated. It recalled how the group has been telling lies against Aregbesola’s administration, which included the N450 billion loan allegedly obtained by the state government among others. It demanded that the CSCEO should prove its allegations with facts, if it has any, rather than peddling
rumours and falsehood to mislead the public. The YS then expressed disappointment that some leading news media houses were being involved to tell the lies and throw the ethics of journalism to the dogs on the altar of personal hatred. It however, stressed that it took solace in the fact that the people of the state appreciated the efforts of Aregbesola’s administration to reposition the state towards the path of social and economic prosperity. The YS then called on the people of the state to ignore what it called “the CSCEO irritant” and be wary of its “unrelenting evil machination to cause crisis in the state by any satanic means”. It also charged Aregbesola’s administration to remain focused and not allow it to be distracted by what those it tagged agents of destabilisation.

The opportunity cost of stealing by the elite has resulted in the rise of deviant behaviour including kidnapping. Corruption is a heinous crime which has destabilised the whole of the society. Kidnapping is an offshoot of the denial of opportunities wrought by corruption. From this perception what is sauce for the goose must be sauce for the gander. The penalty for both criminal infractions should be the same. The malfeasance of the people in the National Assembly has cost the country a lot, not least in terms of perception. This is reflected in the now infamous comments of the British prime minister
David Cameron recently. It shows that due to the actions and inactions of the National Assembly all Nigerians are now tarred with the same brush as criminals. What this means is that we must now like China make corruption a capital offence with death penalty attached. A drastic remedy is clearly required before corruption destroys the country. As clearly stated by PMB “we must destroy corruption before corruption destroys us”. Thus we must all key in to the President’s vision as

The applicants contended that the national body has erred to have nullified the election that was adjudged free and credible by stakeholders, including the security agents. The applicants insisted that Biodun Olalere won in the keenly-contested election and his arch-rival, Dele Ajayi, congratulated him. When the case came up on Monday, Justice Olalere refused the motion ex-parte seeking an injunction to prevent the National Secretariat of NUJ from taking any step until the court decided the case before it. The court also refused counter-affidavit filed by the defense counsel and adjourned the case to July 19, 2016 for report of settlement or hearing.

Let us be absolutely clear about it; this country
the debilitating effect of corruption has already torn aside the social fabric leading to all manner of criminal behaviour. The detterence must therefore be punitive. The Chinese had to take this step because they know that corruption would halt the magnificent advance they have already made. The need is actually more imperative here because we have not realised the hopes of independence; no thanks to corruption. Let us be absolutely clear about it; this country is not going anywhere unless it launches a no-holds barred assault on corruption.
The capital punishment must be brought into play to counteract this scourge. Therefore it’s high time the Senate broke its silence on the issue of corruption and urgently and in the most earnest manner come up with a legislation that will not spare corrupt public officials of the same punishment they have okayed for kidnappers. To endorse capital punishment for kidnappers and keep silent on the critical issue of corruption which has brought us to this sorr pass and which directly concerns them, is most hypocritical and selfish.

Omisore’ Omnibus Troubles ‘Good morning owo’ ‘Good afternoon owo’ ‘Good evening owo’ ‘Owo come look after me’ ‘The son of Omisore

T
he above genre was waxed for Christopher Iyiola Omisore, the onceimpeached Deputy Governor of Osun State; the man who won his “senatorial election” from prison, and the erstwhile almighty Chairman of Senate Appropriation Committee and two-time governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), by King Sunny Ade, who graced his chieftaincy ceremony in Osogbo in the mid-90s. It was during the regime of military dictatorship headed by the late dark-goggled maximum dictator, Sani Abacha. Omisore was haggling to become a governorship candidate of one of the political parties established by Abacha called United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) then. At that material time, old politicians, who were known with their brand political names, had been banned from contesting any of the political offices by the military. So, Omisore was among the new breeds thrown up by the system. His emergence on the political consciousness of Osun State was exciting, because he was seen as a young man, loaded with cash, known as war chest in the political parlance, and his flamboyant life attracted the youths with corrupted ideology of the 90s, and Omisore was set to rule the state, until Abacha, the strong leader, who had languished activists and political actors of opposing views in perpetual detention, died like terribly-sick chicken in 1998. So, by the time General Abubakar Abdulsalami took over and declared open a democratic space, his body language suggested that he meant business; politicians went to work and formed new parties to take power, and when the slain Chief Bola Ige and co formed the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Omisore read the handwriting on the wall, and pitched his tent with the new fold, with a view to realizing his ambition. In the permutation to the candidacy of the party, Omisore was picked as the deputy governor to Chief Bisi Akande, who was the pioneer chairman of the party in the state, and in fairness to him, Omisore brought his youthful appeal and wealth to the table, while Chief Akande brought only load of experience in governance. It ought to be a perfect combination, but their ambitions differed and irreconcilable differences set in. Akande once ran into troubled water of industrial dispute and the way the crisis was handled made the government unpopular,

He roared with political venom and hurriedly adopted a nickname “Dagunro,” the poisonous plant that could not be consumed by anyone, irrespective of his diabolical power. Aregbesola moved to town and found shield in the fanatical support of the people, who were determined to go to war with federal powers, should there be an attempt to rig the election in favour of Omisore. Truth to plan, stern-looking soldiers and masked DSS officials were deployed, and compromised policemen were brought in with the sole aim of rigging the election in favour of the Ife-born politician, but Daguro led by the front and peoples’ eyes became red on the D-day. The election was held and the massive plan of the last chance fell, as the compromised security operatives were made helpless. The planned violence went to sleep. However, the general election that saw to the ouster of Jonathan from Aso Rock appeared to be the demystification of Omisore, as he lost the pecks of the centre, while he was routed in the state and he lost the great Ooni, who had sympathy for him. He currently walks around like a political orphan. Hmmmm. What a law of gravity! Today, Omiore is a fugitive, as he has been declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over N700 million fraud. Now, he wants his fundamental human rights established, and the rights activists to take up his case. What a diminishing return! The instructive lesson from this politician is that everyone should be conscious of consequences of his or her action, for every step in life is a space in history. My take is that I would not want Omisore to be persecuted for his political belief, but it would be to his best interest to surrender himself to the EFCC and clear his name, so that the fraud case would not be added to his perceived conspiracy in Bola Ige’s murder. I love his zeal and drive to get his goal, but I hate his disposition to violence, nothing personal.

while Omisore could not stand the danger the unpopular policy constituted to his ambition. So, he chose to betray the trust that bound him and his boss, in order to gain from the crisis. The battle shifted to the State House of Assembly, and he obviously financed the impeachment exercise against Akande. Unfortunately for him, the impeachment was thwarted by the pro-Akande lawmakers amidst violence, and the table turned against the Deputy Governor Omisore. Nobody envied Speaker Mojeed Alabi’s job then; the very brilliant academic cum politician had to navigate between the turbulence of political Red Sea, and a devil spoiling for war. In the process, Bola Ige, who came to express his disgust about the supposed rudeness of Omisore to his boss, was molested by some thugs said to be loyal to Omisore at the palace of Ooni of Ife, to an extent of being rescued by Ooni Okunade Sijuwade, and few days after, he was brutally slain at his Ibadan home.
A
t no distant time, a strong supporter of Omisore in the impeachment saga at the state parliament, Odunayo Olagbaju, was also brutally killed, and Osun became a tension zone. Eventually, Omisore was impeached but Akande was not returned as second term governor in 2003. Perhaps, the pain of impeachment was deep in Omisore’s mind that he vowed to become the governor by all means. Give it to him, he has been struggling to achieve his aim since. The 2014 governorship election in Osun gave Omisore away as a politician with different world view; he won the ticket of his party, (PDP) with ease, after he had reportedly subjected his perceived arch-rival, Isiaka Adeleke, the first Executive Governor of the state, to a threat to life and succeeded in easing him out of the party. To show his strength, he went to the presidency to take a walk with the then President Goodluck Jonathan, who had pathological hatred for Rauf Aregbesola, the incumbent governor, for denying him victory

Health Benefits Of Moringa
H
aving had a lot of people ask so many questions concerning Moringa oleifera. We decided to putthem here with the best answers. Please go through the list and check to see if your intending questions are already treated. Else, contact us with your questions. We are always researching to serve you better. Now the FAQs... Q: Is Moringa Oleifera found in Nigeria? A: Yes. Moringa Oleifera is found in many parts of Nigeria. It thrives well in Northern Nigeria. Q: Is it good to eat the back of Moringa seeds? A: Yes. The back of moringa seeds is fibrous and good for weightloss. Q: What is the recommended dosage for Moringa seeds? A: You can take two (2) seeds in the morning and two (2) seeds in the evening making a total of four (4) maximum in a day. Ensure You Have Eaten Before Taking Moringa Seeds Q: What is the recommended dosage for Moringa leaf powder? A: Take one tea spoonful three times a day Q: How do I take Moringa leaf powder? A: Take it with already cooked and served meals, ready for eating. You may sprinkle the powder on pap, beans, rice, stews, soups, etc. You can also add to freshly prepared fruits juice. Q: Does Moringa leaf powder have overdose? A: No. Moringa leaf powder do not have over dose. But do not abuse it anyway. Q: Does Moringa leaf powder have expiry date? A: Yes. Just like any other processed food, it can be potent for at least 6 months before it starts losing its potency, depending on how you store it. But the fresher the better. Q: Are Moringa flowers edible? A: Yes, Moringa flowers are edible. Q: Does Moringa flatten the tummy? A: Yes. It does, especially the Rapha Moringa detox and seeds combined. Q: Is Moringa oleifera just another dietary fad/super food? A: Moringa oleifera has been in use for more than 2,000 years and is a very valued plant for a wide variety of applications. It has been revered for centuries in countries in Asia and Africa for both its healing and nutritive value. It is only now being discovered in western culture as people look to nature for health and treatment. In many third world countries, Moringa Oleifera continues to form the basis for nutritional programs put into place by charitable organizations. The biggest challenge for Moringa Oleifera is the “too good to be true” syndrome. It offers so much, that it is difficult to believe such a simple plant can be so useful. Q: If Moringa oleifera is so good, how come I haven’t heard of it? A: Moringa oleifera is known by over 200 names in many different
H
countries, which adds to its anonymity. It is usually the product of tropical and subtropical countries, where the hardy plant survives well and provides sustenance to native people. As a result, this product hasn’t been commercially farmed and produced on an industrial scale. However, it is incorporated into many “proprietary” formulas for nutritional supplements and the Moringa oleifera oil is used in many luxurious cosmetics. Q: With the accessibility to fresh vegetables in most shops, why is a supplement like Moringa Oleifera necessary? A: Time, not availability is usually the issue. Gyms, swimming pools and basketball courts abound, but we are more out of shape now than at any time in our history. In an ideal society, we would have the time to cook all of our meals from scratch with fresh vegetables that we can personally vouch for. However, most of us are so busy in the evenings with after-school activities, homework, travel, and chores, that meals are usually grabbed from the freezer or emptied from a can. As a result, our food is reconstituted, reheated, “enriched”, preserved, and genetically modified. We have only to look at the health of our youth, with a staggering increase in obesity, juvenile diabetes, and autism, to determine that all is not well in the world of nutrition. Our bodies were designed to get our nutrition primarily from plant sources. Balance is the key and Moringa Oleifera is a naturally balanced nutritional supplement. Q: I have heard that Moringa is high in calcium. Is it safe for those who suffer from lactose intolerance? A: You have heard right. Moringa is rich in many nutrients and has a high calcium value, pound for pound, 17 times the calcium in milk.
D
espite this, it is safe for all to consume, including those who are lactose intolerant, as it doesn’t contain any lactose. Q: Do I need a prescription for Moringa? A: No, you don’t. It is a completely safe and natural product, which contains ingredients your body will recognize for their nutritive value. Moringa is one of the few plants that can be consumed by the entire family. In fact the World Health Organization recommends feeding malnourished infants and children Moringa on a daily basis. If you are concerned or suffer from a medical disability, we recommend you speak to your health care practitioner before consuming Moringa products. Q: What are some of the health benefits to consuming Moringa? A: There are many health benefits to consuming Moringa, which is why it has earned the title of a super food, and is also sometimes known as The Miracle Tree, or the Tree of Life. While the benefits vary in degree from person to person, our customers have reported improvement in digestion, vision, energy levels, mental clarity, and overall well being. They also use Moringa to support a healthy blood sugar level, as a nutritional support for diabetes, and as an overall health and wellness supplement. Q: Are there any side effects I may experience? A: Moringa is chockfull of vitamins, nutrients, antioxidants, and amino acids. According to the International Organization, Trees for Life, extensive research conducted at the Noguchi Memorial Medical Research Centre in Ghana has found that Moringa leaf powder has no toxic elements and no side effects were observed even in families consuming high amounts of Moringa.
owever, each person is unique and responds differently to Moringa. If you do suffer any side effects, they may range from mild headaches and upset stomachs, to nausea. This is simply the result of toxins being eliminated from your body. Gradually, these side effects should disappear. Q: How does Moringa acts as Detoxifier? A: Moringa seeds are well known for its use to purify dirty water. Moringa seeds when mixed with impure water will absorb all the impurities. In the similar process, Moringa attracts the toxins from the blood and removes and excrete toxic build up. Q: Can Moringa supplements be taken with other prescriptions? A: A Moringa supplement is a 100% natural product made from the parts of the Moringa tree. People have been taking Moringa for hundreds of years as a staple food and have not reported any problem since then. However, we suggest you to consult with your Physician whether you can take these supplements along with other prescription medicines. Q: What is the best method to take the Moringa powder? A: The best way is to mix it with any beverages. A teaspoon of Moringa powder mixed in a glass of Orange juice will give you a wholesome drink filled with Nutrients. It can also be mixed in food (rice, pap, etc) and soup preparation. Q: How effective is Moringa? A: A lot of research has been done about Moringa and has been part of the daily diet of people around the world because of its nutritional and medicinal properties. Moringa has saved millions of lives in poor countries where malnutrition is prevalent because of its high nutritive value. John Hopkins has released a scientific paper regarding some of the medicinal properties of Moringa. Q: How many Moringa capsules should I take a day? A: The suggested daily intake is 4 capsules a day. 2 capsule in the morning and 2 capsule during lunch time. These are the times when your active body needs it most. Q: I want to lose/gain weight. Will Moringa help me in losing/ gaining weight? A: The good thing about Moringa is that it has all the essential vitamins, minerals and amino acids that our bodies need in natural form and generous quantities. If you want to lose weight and you are on a controlled diet, taking Moringa will ensure you are getting all your essential and vital nutrients. On the other hand, if you want to gain weight.

•FG’s directive that MDAs must buy made-in-Nigeria vehicles is most welcome
A
prophet is not without honour,” goes that famous Biblical quote, “except in his own country, among his own people”. If we were to apply this quote to Nigerian-made autos, it would even sound grimmer: for while they are shunned at home, they lack the capacity to compete abroad. So, unlike the prophet honoured abroad, the Nigerian auto is shunned both home and abroad. But with this negative home market mindset by Nigerians, how are these sectors supposed to grow, mature and expand, create jobs and deliver value, that would strengthen the local economy? That is why the Federal Government’s directive to its ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) to patronise Made-in-Nigeria vehicles could not have come at a better time.
Yet, such admonitions are hardly novel. Recall the halcyon days when the pair of Peugeot Automobiles Nigeria (PAN) and Volkswagen of Nigeria (VON) had a near vice-hold of the Sedan segment of the Nigerian auto market. Aside from households and firms that bought their products as pool and official cars, the federal and state governments were their major clients, giving them bulk business. But that model worked because the very apex of government led the way. Back then, particularly during Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo’s austerity times as military head of state, Peugeot was the official State House vehicle. So, was it for the military, the police and other security agencies. But the advent of the Second Republic, under President Shehu Shagari, with the influx of exotic and expensive cars into the State House fleet, changed all that.
Between then and now, not much has changed. The other side of the story is, of course, the business folly of players that enjoy captive markets. Consumers started complaining about the relative lack of quality, when Nigerianmade cars are compared with their counterparts, even if the two cars are of the same brand. But the local manufacturers too had — and still have— their own tales of woe: high costs of vital support infrastructure like power, high cost of money and an unstable policy environment. Then, there was the problem of foreign exchange to import key raw components like completely knocked down (CKD) parts. All these made the products uncompetitive, both in price and in quality. So, inasmuch as it is imperative that Nigerians patronise locally made cars, it is no less imperative that
Welcome Development
a Nigerian Standard (NS) specification is achieved — a standard not lower than other competitors globally, even with the rudimentary stage of the sector. It is that investment in value that may help to tie down the market and wean Nigerians from ruinous obsession with anything foreign. Still, the starting point in all of these is the government’s disposition. At the highest level, the governments, led by the Federal Government, should make it an official policy that the highest officials in the land patronise these auto makers. States that also kit the police with logistics can buy in bulk from these local makers. Such a policy would pave the way for the real Nigerian-made car. Who knows? If India can showcase TATA to the rest of the world, why can’t Nigeria showcase its own car one day? •Culled from The Nation Newspaper
•Withdrawal of Bill seeking to obstruct freedom of speech through the social media is good for democracy
T
he move by the Senate to muffle the voice of Nigerians, especially the young ones who have been very loud on the social media platform, has predictably failed. In line with development on the information highway globally, young Nigerians have continued to speak their minds on the internet with a view to catching the ears of their leaders. But, the politicians see them as irritants and have continually sought means of withdrawing a platform they (politicians) did not create. It was in this wise that the Bill introduced ostensibly to curb the excesses of the social media was introduced in the Senate. Senators who supported the move said the citizen journalists, as they pride themselves, have become a menace to the society. They lack training and are subject to no rules. When they malign, as they often do, the senators said no ready remedies are available. As such, many politically exposed Nigerians are subjected to scurrilous attacks. Hence, the Bill sought to put
in place laws that would rein in the citizen journalists, as those who might fall foul of the proposed law’s provision could end up in jail. As many Nigerians have said, we see no merit in the position of proponents of the Bill and are relieved that it has been withdrawn. At this stage of the national democratic development, what we need is to widen the scope of participation of Nigerians. It is in the interest of Nigeria that exasperated Nigerians have such forum to express themselves. Any serious leader should be thankful that the views of educated young Nigerians could be aggregated and accessed through the social media. We are not unaware of the excesses of some of the activists on the platform; many of them abuse and malign others inappropriately. Sometimes, baseless rumours are posted to the irritation of office holders. But, this is not enough to kill the platform. Given the level of corruption in the system, the social media has become a mode of dissemination of
information that could keep the rulers of the society in check. Nigerians know their heroes and the villains. The same platform has been quite helpful in mobilising the people for social and political change. Rather than be fixated on seeking means of punishing those who post on the media, the legislators should tidy up their acts. During the tenure of the former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, now Emir of Kano, Alhaji Mohammed Sanusi, he regaled the country with how the 109 senators and 360 members of the House of Representatives helped themselves to a disproportionate share of the national wealth. This and other revelations about acquisition of exotic cars at a period of recession have naturally battered the image of the lawmakers. But killing the social media is not the solution. The legislators have to become more patriotic and support the change mantra of the government. They should launch a searchlight into
obsolete laws and expunge them from the statutes, as well as step up their oversight function that would make them good representatives. Leaders should wake up to their responsibilities. They should be creative, too, in using the social media to inform the citizens about the various policies of government. If all platforms being abused were to be scrapped, then the National Assembly itself has no reason to stand. Government has failed Nigerians, but it is still being tolerated. It is therefore in the interest of the society that the social media be helped to develop and overcome its excesses. The Nigerian society needs the social media and it will serve no useful purpose to kill it. Withdrawing the obnoxious Bill is one of the best things to have happened in the National Assembly in recent times.

y every standard, the former Nigerian leader, Chief Mathew Olusegun Aremu Okikiola Obasanjo, is a very lucky man. The Owu-born retired Army General is lucky to have ruled Nigeria twice; as a military Head of State and a democratically-elected President. Cumulatively, Obasanjo had served the country at the top echelon for eleven and half years. To most Nigerians, he even tried to go for the third time, which failed woefully. Though, from a humble background in Ibogun-Olaogun in Ogun State, the young Obasanjo could not access university education and therefore enlisted into the Nigerian Army. He rose to the rank of a General and took active role in the Nigerian Civil War. It is to his credit that after Brigadier Benjamin Adekunle, a.k.a Black Scorpion, was withdrawn from the Third Marine Commando, he took over and made the Biafra Army to surrender. Obsanjo took a subjugated Phillip Effiong, the Commander-In-Chief of the Biafran Armed Forces to the Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, after Chukwemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu had fled to Cote d’Ivore. Baba Iyabo, as he is sometimes called, became the Federal Commissioner for Works after the civil war and subsequently became the Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters, the second-in-command to the late Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Mohammed, who was assassinated in February, 1976. After the death of his boss, fate smiled on him and he took over, albeit, unwillingly. He was quoted as saying that he was taking over against his wish. Obasanjo returned the country to a democratically-elected government in 1979 and completed the Murtala-initiated return to civil rule. Erroneously, some writers attribute to Obasanjo, the first military man in Africa to return the soldiers to barracks. In fact and indeed, it was the late Ghanaian Head of State, General Akwasi Afrifa, the first to do so. He returned his country to civil rule in 1969, a decade before Obasanjo. Since he left power in 1979, there is no government in Nigeria that has not got the scathing remarks of the Ebora Owu. He started with President Shehu Shagari and by the time, Shagari was overthrown, Obasanjo considered himself to have been vindicated. He attacked General Buhari’s government, as he did with General Ibrahim Babangida ceaselessly. The government of General Sani Abacha could not tolerate the scathing criticism of his former Commander-In-Chief. Obasanjo was roped in a phantom coup, which sent him into jail and it was divine intervention that saved him from Abacha’s gulag. After the death of Abacha, General Abdulsalami Abubakar took over and handed over power to a “refined” Obasanjo. Baba Iyabo was in power for eight years and his body language showed that he schemed for a third term,

which eventually collapsed like a pack to cards. However, he was to say, that if he really wanted the third term agenda, he would have succeeded because there is nothing he asked for that God does not grant. Nigerians would recall that the turmoil that greeted Babangida’s annulment of the June 12 th 1993 election almost brought the country to its knees. The country was in dire straits with another civil war looming. The June 12 th 1993 election was acknowledged as the freest and fairest election ever-conducted in Nigeria before then. The election received popular acclamation throughout the country from North to South and from East to West. It broke so many petty prejudices like religious and ethnic bigotry. Even though the presidential candidate and his running mate were Muslims, Nigerians voted overwhelmingly for the ticket. Nigerians were anxious to see a popular southern candidate emerge as the President, before the unfortunate annulment by the then President Babangida. While Nigerians were bemoaning their fate and the possible outcome of the annulment, Obasanjo came out publicly to state that Chief Moshood Abiola, the presumed winner of the election was not the messiah Nigerians have been waiting for after all. That statement coming from a former Head of State and from Egba
stock like Abiola served as a wet blanket. t would also be recalled that Obasanjo castigated Babangida that his “SAP must have a human face”. SAP is the Structural Adjustment programme enunciated by Babangida. It is also instructive to note that while Obasanjo enjoys riling leaders, he least expects criticism. While he held fort at Aso Rock, Obasanjo was noted to have implemented unpopular policies among which was the persistent upward review of the prices of petroleum products. Again, the basis of Nigeria’s corruption was watered during his regime, when subsidy on petroleum products increased to N20 billion per year in spite of the setting up the anti-graft agencies of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Related Offices Commission (ICPC). By default, he made Comrade Adams Oshinmhole, the governor of Edo State. The Comrade-Governor became so popular while he was the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) because of the unpopular policies of Obasanjo, that by the time his tenure expired, Edo people had no choice but to elect him as their governor. In an attempt to make himself a populist, Obasanjo as President once caned a policeman in the public for refusing school pupils to have access

to him in Kogi State. t is my opinion that it was undignifying of the President to openly cane a policeman. It is also worthy to note that of all Nigerian leaders, Obasanjo is reputed to openly castigate his fellow leaders while they are in power. Most people believe, as a former leader, he has access to sitting presidents and could admonish or counsel them without recourse to public. Though, he had cause to state publicly that after so many attempts to make the immediate-past President Goodluck Jonathan to see reasons, he had to write him an open letter, which later became a matter for public discourse. Recently, Obasanjo descended on Buhari, saying that the President, who served under him as a Petroleum Minister, is not good on economic matters, as well as foreign affairs but very good in military matters. He assured that the current government will win the war against the terrorists. That statement coming from the ex-President at this time is quite unfortunate. Was Obasanjo trying to insinuate that the economic policies of this government are thoroughly bad? Juxtaposing the parlous state of the economy Buhari inherited with the dwindling fortune of our major foreign earner, oil, in the midst of the terror war, it is definitely not a child’s play. Dr Oby Ezekweseli, who served in Obasanjo’s government, had earlier been quoted as saying that Buhari’s economic policy is archaic but the Obasanjo’s economic team of which she was part could not lay solid foundation for the country. It is to Buhari’s credit that for the first time in the country, the government has been able to compel the organised labour, under the NLC, to capitulate. The Ayuba Wabba-led NLC suspended the strike as a face-saving measure after the national strike had failed. Obasanjo was still at his best recently when at an open place, pacing up and down, said that the Chibok girls will never return. He said: “Anybody who says the Chibok girls will be rescued is lying.” Was that statement meant to encourage the government or dampen the spirit of the distressed parents, some of whom have died untimely. The all-knowing Obasanjo never foresaw that Amina Ali Nkeki would be rescued. Obasanjo, the man who knows it all, did not know that Amina will join her parents again. It is my humble advice to the Owuborn General to thread softly, for it is only Almighty God that knows it all.
