Foreword Welcome to the 1st Auction of the Oswal Antiques to be held on 11th January 2009 at Pune. First of all, I am grateful to all our patrons who have encouraged us and made our Fixed Price Lists a big hit. After launching our web-based business, this is our new venture which we are sure will be blessed by you. We are immensely pleased to tell you that our beginning is going to start from the historical city of Pune. This maiden auction of ours is a big leap for us even though we have been associated with numismatic auctions before. This new endeavor is a boost to our cherished objective of serving numismatists of India and coming close to our goal of popularizing numismatics in India. Though, all along we had been mindful of our objectives we never knew that providence will present us with such an opportunity so soon. And this has been possible because of you, our patrons, and your overwhelming support in our other numismatic enterprises. Your exuberant appreciations, dear patrons, are truly overwhelming and we appreciate your feedbacks that have prodded us to do our best to offer satisfaction. As you know, we always prize quality and whether we serve the novice or the veteran, one thing we are not going to compromise with and that is Quality. We will never sacrifice quality and honesty at the altar of profit. And we are sure this will bring some sort of discipline and transparency to this noble trade in India. Numismatics includes all sorts of players, from the new collector to the most advanced and scholastically sophisticated connoisseur. And we want to serve the whole gamut of numismatists, from the youthful kid to the veteran. We do not want to neglect one group at the cost of the other. fact. The auctioneer reserves the right in forming his opinion, to consult and rely upon any expert or authority considered by him reliable. Notwithstanding the forgoing, if any lot should have been wrongly described in any material aspect, the buyer may reject the same, provided that he shall have given notice of intention to do so and shall have returned the same to the auctioneer within seven (7) days from the day of the sale. Under no circumstances will the auctioneer be liable for any costs, expenses or damages incurred by the buyer in respect of any lot, including, but not limited to, loss of any kind of profit whatsoever. Bidders are advised to scrutinize the lots they bid for. The auctioneer acts solely as an agent and shall not be responsible for any default by either the buyer or the seller or for any action or claim which may arise in respect of any lot. Buyers must satisfy themselves as to the accuracy of their purchases at the time of delivery. The auctioneer cannot be held responsible for any discrepancy which might be discovered after the lots have been removed from either the action room or the auctioneer's premises. The auctioneer will not hold himself responsible for the safe custody of any lots left for more than seven (7) working days after the date of sale, and reserves the right to charge storage and re-sell by auction or privately, and without notice to the buyer, any lots not removed from his premises within fourteen (14) days from the date of sale. Buyers shall not be entitled to remove lots from the auction room during the course of the auction. Each lot shall be at the buyer's risk from the fall of the hammer. Any part of the purchase price left outstanding after the action pursuant to Condition 5, shall be paid in full within seven (7) days of the date of auction. Without prejudice to any rights, the auctioneer reserves the right to charge interest on any overdue payment at the rate of 2 ½ % per month. Credit Card payments are subject to 3% surcharge. Mastercard, Visa and American Express. A “Buyer's Premium” of 10% is charged but Service Tax does not apply as we do not come under its slab on the hammer price. By making a bid the buyer acknowledges his acceptance of these Conditions and shall be bound by them. These Conditions shall take effect and be construed in accordance with Indian law.

Ujjaini, Lead, 13.05 g, square, a big Taurine or a Nandipada in the centre with a small swastika at top-right corner on obv; Ujjaini symbol with other symbols on rev. About Extremely Fine for the type, probably Unpublished, Very Rare. Estimate: Rs. 13,000-15,000

Kaushambi, Copper, 6.33 g, Gajalakshmi type, nd 2 century BC, Goddess Lakshmi standing on a lotus, facing with two elephants on either side of her sprinkling water on her head on obv; a tree-inrailing with ancillary symbols on rev. A superb specimen of this rare type, which hardly comes for collectors, Very Rare. Estimate: Rs. 11,000-12,000

The ship on the rev is a continuation of the three-symbol punch-marked coins of the so-called Vanga Janapada and indicates the flourishing trade of the Bengalis in the early historic Bengal.

Jhansie, Silver, Rupee, mint probably Orchhanagar, in the name of Shah Alam II, RY 6 (AH 1178=AD 1765). Unpublished, Very Fine+, Extremely Rare. Jhansi (Balwantnagar) was under the Peshwa Governors until 1761. From 1761 to 1765 it changed hands from Shuja-ud-Daula of Awadh to Anup Gosin of Moth, a local freebooter. However, Anup could not retain Jhansie for lack of funds, which made him to gave the town and the Fort to the Raja of Orchha in 1765. However, the town was recaptured by the Marathas in 1766. The present coin is an evidence of this hold of the Orchha Rajas who seem to have renamed Balwantnagar as Orchhanagar and issued coins with the new name. Interestingly, Zodiacal Rupees with the name of Orchhanagar are reported and may belong to Jhansi Mint under Orchha State.
