The Arvind Chandra Collection of Indian Coins Dear Friends, As a part of our ongoing endeavour to enrich your collection and serve Indian Numismatics to the best of our ability, we are immensely pelased to bring you yet another fine collection of coins from the collection of Sri Arvind Chandra, built with utmost care over the last 30 years. The depth and breadth of the collection reflects the impeccable taste of a person who is a connoiseur in other aspects of his life as well. This is the first ever collector-featured coin collection to be presented in any auction in India. We are sure this auction will set a trend of profiling collections by ascribing Collectors' names to the collections as is the tradition in the west and will unshackle collections from the clutches of anonimity owing to fear of the various governmental authorities. Arvindji is the founder and imemdiate past president of the Delhi Coin Society and under his leadership the Society has scaled great heights in furthering numismatics in northern India. Although the hobby of Coin collecting dates back to his early childhood, his serious involvement with Indian Numismatics began only after he left full time service / consultancy. He took keen interest in every aspect of Numismatics and took pains to study and understand Medieval Coinage of India. Arvindji was a topper in Mathematics and Physics (at Graduation and Master's level) and holds M. Phil. Degree (First Class with Distinction) in Public Administration; and yet his knowledge of History, particularly related to the coinage of his special interest such as Mughal coins is good. Shri Chandra joined Indian Railways in 1971 and was Executive Director in the Ministry of Railways in 1991 when he switched to the Governments consultancy organization RITES. He left RITES in 1997 to continue independent railway consultancies. He has toured the whole world in his professional capacity as a Railways consultant. Apart from numismatics, his other passions includes hiking/ trekking. He holds distinction of having climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa, trekked Andes Mountains in South America and also did the Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra. The Arvind Chandra collection comprises 199 lots starting from Ancient times to the present times and some of them are pedigreed. The mainstay of the collection is the Sultanate and Mughal sections. Among the worthies are the silver Tanka of Razia and ½ Rupee of Muzafar Shah (Gujarat Sultan). Rare mughal coins include rupees of AkbarAnhirwalapattan , Jehangir- ½ Rupee of Kabul as Salim, Shah Jahan Goharghat, Aurangzeb-Ranthambhore. The collection is evenly represented in Sikh, Maratha, Baroda and other princely states as well. At Oswal Antiques, we pride ourselves in providing an unpretentious and friendly service to our customers and patraons. We thoroughly understand and imbibe that we owe our success and even our existence to our clients. Without the clients and their blessings we would never have reached the numismatic heights we have scaled today. Oswal Antiques invite all of you to be a part of the Auction and enjoy coin collecting. Happy Collecting Girish J. Veera 3
