Post-Gupta Bengal, Samatata (c. AD 600), Gold Dinar, Early type Samatata coin with legend. Unpublished. Obv King facing left holding bow with left hand and arrow with right hand, standard with conch shell in left field; Rev Lakshmi standing right, illegible inscription in right field (Rhodes & Bose, fig. 1 var). These early types, itself very scarce, usually appear without any legend but this coin bears a legend that probably reads 'Sri', under the left arm of the King. This is completely different from the later commoner coins, which are more debased and artistically much cruder, bearing 'Sri' legend for 'Sridharanarata'. This particular coin can be attributed to around 200 years earlier than the Sridharanarata coins based on style and metal. However, it is still to be determined who this 'Sri' could be. Estimate: ` 1,00,000-1,50,000

This is an extremely rare coin struck in Samatata area and seems to have copied from Kushan coins. Mitchiner has attributed these as the coin of King Vira Zadamarah. However he has not mentioned any coin with double deities. This type still remains unpublished. This is probably the unique type of Samatata series which has double deity. Extremely Fine.
