The Key to Success

There is an excellent book by Amar Bhide called The Origin and Evolution of New Businesses. It is an exploration of the lives of successful small business owners. In it, there are insightful nuggets of data he gathered on what led to their success. Some of their outstanding achievements were due to their ability to emphasize their value-add, be innovative, outwork their competitors, and tap into their resilience and creativity in the face of a challenge.

There are three words that you can explore when it comes to fostering success for your small business–extraordinary, ambitious, and organized. One definition of extraordinary is “remarkable, uncommon, rare, wonderful.” This is the perfect time to own what makes you special. What is unique about your store? Are you known for exceptional customer service? Do people tell you that they love how organized your shop is? Is your merchandising top-notch? Pay attention to what makes your store shine and lean into that more. The definition of ambitious is the “desire and determination to achieve success.” This season take a moment to assess your ambition and the ambition of your employees to succeed and think of creative ways to keep your team motivated. Organization is defined as a way to “make arrangements or preparations; or coordinate.” This spring, reassess the systems you have in place. See if anything needs fine-tuning and eliminate things that aren’t working. Also, remember that fostering a positive, well-organized work environment can help your employees tremendously.
