In the current music industry where radios, TV and streaming are the big players deciding to spread the word about an artist (or not), it becomes more and more difficult for a lambda artist to get his music heard if he doesn’t fit some kind of criterias. It takes time, it takes patience, talent but above all it takes a lot of hard work. At On The Move Magazine, we give a particular attention to talent no matter where you come from, your musical genre, the amount of followers/views/fans you have got. We don’t talk quantity, we talk quality. We talk quality because we love music with the big M. We carefully choose the artists you’ll discover in this magazine to introduce you to «la crème de la crème». You’ll find big names, you’ll find unknown names. You’ll love what you’ll listen to, maybe you will hate it but at least, you’ll give our artists a chance. Because at the end of the day, every success story began with a chance given. ‘‘ Pamela Charbit, founder of On The Move

SUMMARY 3

MARIAN HILL Formed by Jeremy Lloyd and Samantha Gongol, the duo Marian Hill -coming from Philadelphia- is making huge waves with its single « Down » used in an advertisement for Apple AirPods. They released a first album « Act One » and a track with Lauren Jauregui from girlband Fifth Harmony, which pushed their career even further into success. With a particular melodic/electro infused sound, Marian Hill succeeded in building a reputation for themselves into the international alternative scene. Heart-to-heart conversation with two incredibly fun people and talented artists.

5

On The Move Magazine : Hi Samantha, Hi Jeremy ! We’re happy to have you here in Paris. How’s your day going ? Samantha: Good! It’s incredible! We love Paris! It’s our third time as a band but this is our first really extensive promo run, it’s exciting. On The Move Magazine : How did Marian Hill first start out ? Samantha: Jeremy and I have been friends for a long time, we met in middle school and we’ve been friends throughout high-school and college. Jeremy was on a break during his last year and came to me with a beat that would become “Whisky”, our first song and that really became the blueprint from Marian Hill and from there we became a band!

«makING THINGS that didn’t exist before is what keep us GOING EVERY DAY» On The Move Magazine : You released two EPs «Sway» and «Play» before unveiling your debut album «Act One». How was the transition like from EPs out to a full record ? Jeremy: I think one of the coolest things is that when you have EPs out, you don’t have that many songs out, and when you’re touring you’re playing 45 minutes at least or an hour and you don’t have 45 minutes of music out (laugh) so inevitably at least half a show was stuff that fans didn’t know yet and what’s really exciting having the album out is now when we play shows, people know every songs. That’s really cool to have that kind of support and seeing people getting excited with different ones and see what songs different crowds like. And also just really feel connection with the fans that we’ve written and we’ve spent years writing a pretty extensive body of work and that there are people who know it all. Samantha: Yeah, it took us a little while. We had one song. When people started reaching out about “Whisky” and they’re like “where’s your live show?” and we’re like “we don’t have one we have one song” (laugh) so yeah it took us a couple of years but I think it is worth taking time to develop your sound and what you’re trying to say.

On The Move Magazine : What was the main difference between those two EPs and the final album ? What did you want to achieve with «Act One» ? Jeremy: “Act One” for us was really about kind of defining our sound. Because from the beginning, “Whisky” was kind of like “whoa this is a new sound, this is what Marian Hill sounds like!” and people were really into it. And when it became like “what is our sound?” and we had to figure that out. So “Act One” was kind of combination like “this is it, this is what we can do, this is what the vibe of Marian Hill is”. Samantha: and there was more of vulnerability on “Act One” that there wasn’t on the previous two EPs so that was really fun to explore as well. On The Move Magazine : You guys are known for this really cool and minimal sound. How did that come to be ? Samantha: I mean I really got to credit Jeremy! He’s the one as a producer who created this sonic world that was really specific. I even was afraid of it at the beginning and it took me a while to adjust. Jeremy: I think her voice really thrives when it has… Honestly any voice really thrives… Samantha: Thanks! (laugh) Disposable on my own project! Jeremy: No! You are not! Your voice specifically is amazing. It’s just more of general thing when I think in general voices are way too crushed in music production and it’s amazing to give them space and let them sound really human and full and Sam has so many different colors and textures in her voice that really could come to life on our stuff. As far as our sound goes, “Whisky” was an accident, really, like a happy accident and it was nothing that either of us had made or heard before and when people really liked it, it became the blueprint, it needed to be big forward drums, cool interesting other smaller elements and unique sounds and we just grew from there. Samantha: I think it allows your vocals to breathe. I can get loud and bold but it’s not my happy place, it’s not where I love to go. I’ve always loved – well they were powerhouses – but the old soul singers, you know just something that was a little bit more textured, a bit softer too. So I feel like working with Jeremy was the first time I was like “I could sound okay” on this electronic world.

7

Jeremy: Okay, now who’s disposable! (laugh) Samantha: Well I don’t know, now I’m insecure! (laugh) On The Move Magazine : How did the collaboration with Lauren Jauregui on «Back To Me» happened ? Jeremy: She mentioned us in an interview and twitter blew up and we were like “what’s happening?”. And then we met her at a show and she just came to us and she was just awesome. She’s a really cool person and we instantly hit it off and it was just a matter of time, we knew we wanted to work together and figure something out. Samantha: Yeah it was really cool, I remember the interview she was in was funny, I love telling that story because all the girls mentioned the Justin Bieber record: Ryan was like “what are you listening too?” and everyone was like “Justin, Justin, Justin!” and then she was like “Marian Hill” and everyone was like “What?!” (laugh). And Ryan [Seacrest ndlr.] was flipping through his pages and was like “I don’t know who that is” (laugh), “I’ll have to check them out!”. On The Move Magazine : Your single «Down» blew up all around the world, can you tell us the story behind it ? Samantha: We have been known of Apple for a while, we’ve been talking even before we were signed, which is interesting, we’ve just been kind of mutual fans obviously and “Down” finally was the song that felt right, that was right in the end and we couldn’t have asked for a better spot. And yeah from there it really took off, it was wild. Like really overnight! Honestly, people talk about overnight success (laugh), it doesn’t happen that way but in the moment it was really quick! On The Move Magazine : Which artists would you like to collaborate with in the future ? Jeremy: I’ve been thinking Usher lately, I think it would be really cool, I love his voice. Drake too! Samantha: Missy Elliot. The Weeknd. We just got to work with Big Sean, which is great! Yeah there are so many!

On The Move Magazine : What are your musical influences ? Which artists influenced you since the beggining ?

On The Move Magazine : You have some concerts planned in the next few weeks. Are you excited to go back on stage ?

Jeremy: I’ve always been into a lot of pop producers and electronic producers and kind of pulling from those two worlds and in terms of hip-hop, people like Pharrell Williams, Timberland, Kanye West are like my bible. I love Boy Wonder, I love 40 who produces a lot for Drake. Also people like Baths, Cashmere Cat, James Blake, people who are really pushing the envelope and defining new electronic sound worlds.

Samantha: Yes ! Well some shows are really hard (laugh) and I get more nervous than Jeremy does but the more that I perform, the more comfortable I am. And I love connecting with fans too! There’s an energy that’s indescribable, that you can only find on stage.

Samantha: As a vocalist, I love soul and blues. I love all the jazz vocalists. As a huge Norah Jones fan, growing up with Whitney Houston, as I got older I sort of started to learn about electronic music and started to love that as well. I feel like I’m starting to appreciate Hip-Hop even more working with Jeremy so much (laugh). As a vocalist, I always responded to melody first, so if the song has a recognizable hook then I’m in it. But if it doesn’t then sometimes it takes me a little bit longer. And I never mentioned this too, but I love gospel music, I wouldn’t say that I know a lot about it but I started to try and do a deeper dive.

Jeremy: For me it’s creating. My favorite thing to do is making something that didn’t exist before and I love the magic of that. That’s what keeps me going every day.

On The Move Magazine : What is your favourite song to play live ? Samantha: “Talk to me”! Jeremy: I love doing “Got it” because Sam and I get to do a back and forth solo thing and that’s really fun! Samantha: I love “Got it” too because we always put it at the end and I get kind of nervous in the beginning. It takes me a little while to settle down but by the end we just sort of let go and have fun. On The Move Magazine : How and where do you see yourself in five years ? Samantha: That’s a good question! Jeremy: maybe we’ll have our third Marian Hill album out. I don’t know, there’s a few dreams, thinking about starting a label at some point… Samantha: Oh my god, we’ll be so old! It’s really exciting to see the success that “Down” has had, it’s really cool that it’s on the radio and it’d be cool to have another one! But yeah, just continue to make the music that we love and be happy… that’s a really hard question! (laugh)

On The Move Magazine : What’s your favourite part in doing music ? Creating, recording, touring ?

Samantha: I love hearing the finished product but sometimes writing songs can be tedious. For me it’s probably performing: when it’s a really good performance and when the crowd is really into it, there’s nothing like it.

«WE LOVE CONNECTING WITH OUR FANS» On The Move Magazine : What do you like to listen to at the moment ? Jeremy: I’m listening to the new Drake mixtape “More Life”. Samantha: I like the new Drake mixtape! I really Kehlani. I feel like I listen to so much! Not that much albums, but songs released here and there. On The Move Magazine : If you weren’t musicians, what would you be ? Jeremy: I’d be an actor probably. I did a lot of that in college. Samantha: I’ve been getting more into fashion so maybe something in fashion. I love where you can go, what you can become, how transformative it is.

LUIS FONSI If his name doesn’t ring a bell to you, you can’t ignore his latest single. «Despacito» is everywhere, dragging the world into its caliente vibes. Its single-songwriter ? Luis Fonsi. Though the featuring with Daddy Yankee - then remixed with Justin Bieber- might be his biggest hit to date, Luis Fonsi is far from being a begginer. The 39 years old portorican is one of the biggest stars in latin music. 20 years of career, 8 singles and numerous awards didn’t have his authenticity and humbleness fade away. Luis Fonsi talked to On The Move about his impressive journey and how «Despacito» gives him a chance to start from scratch and reinvent himself.

11

On The Move Magazine : Hi Luis ! It’s an honor to have you with us in France. You’re here to promote « Despacito » your latest single featuring Daddy Yankee. This track broke a lot of records, being the only spanish song to ever reach the Spotify Top 10 global chart or the 3rd fastest video to have a billion views on Youtube. Congratulations ! « Despacito » is a global phenomenon but what’s the story behind it ? Luis Fonsi : Of course. « Despacito » is my new single for my new album. It’s influenced by different sort of genres I guess. I come a little bit more from the pop world and this is a bit more rythmic song. It has a bit of latin and urban vibes. It’s a collaboration with a great artist Daddy Yankee, which is a great friend. I have collaborated with him before. And the story behind it is just I wanted to write a song that could put people in a good mood and make them want to dance, want to move. It’s a sensual song to just really enjoy. On The Move Magazine : Even before « Despacito » you had an amazing career in music anyone would envy. Did you expect to reach an even greater success with this new song ? Luis Fonsi : Yeah, you know, I’ve always said that I still haven’t written my best song. And I still haven’t recorded my best album. I’ve been doing this for about 19 years but I still feel I have a lot more to do. So, did I expect it ? You know, I worked for it. I always think that better things will come. And I think I’m gonna have a bigger song than « Despacito ». That’s the way I envision it you know. This has obviously been a blessing, what’s happening with this song worldwide. So, I’m very, very happy and humbled by it. I’m obviously very surprised by the response, especially worldwide in Asia or in Europe, here in France you know, it’s just amazing. But I just think the best songs are yet to be written. On The Move Magazine : Daddy Yankee is featured in « Despacito ». Before that, you collaborated with major figures such as Christina Aguilera, Laura Pausini or Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top. What does it bring to you and your music to collaborate with others ? Luis Fonsi : You know collaborating with different artists just kind of takes you out of your comfort zone. It makes you have to share somewhat and blend two different styles or three or four depending on how many people are collaborating. I’ve always been a big fan of collaborations ever since I started my career. I’ve been blessed to collaborate with amazing artists : Christina

Aguilera, Afrojack, Laura Pausini... Just really, really great artists and Daddy Yankee is just so powerful. His delivery is so powerful. He is so rythmic and he brings that side to the track which definitely was needed. On The Move Magazine : You’re a huge star in Latin Music and have been on the scene for 19 years. Yet, you’re not very exposed here in Europe, for example. How do you handle this two-faced career, which has different speeds depending on continents or countries ? Luis Fonsi : Yeah I mean definitely there are two different kinds of sides to everything now. I see it has been really refreshing because in Latin America, in the United States, in Spain, they’ve known me for almost twenty years. They’ve seen me grow up, they’ve heard many many songs, shows and everything. And here, I’m starting like the first day of school. And it’s refreshing to be able to get to know a new audience, for them to get to know me. It keeps my feet on the ground, it keeps me humble, it keeps me working hard. And I love the fact that I have been given this new opportunity to sort of start from scratch in a beautiful place like here, in France.

« I still haven’t written my best song And I still haven’t recorded my best album » On The Move Magazine : To this point, you suceeded in building an international career by singing in Spanish. Yet, it would have been very easy for you to choose English at some point to reach a maximal audience. Why did you choose to stick to your mother tongue ? Luis Fonsi : It was a decision that I took from my first album. I was already living in the United States and I spoke English. There was a point in time when I was like « Hum, should I do my first album in English ? In Spanish ? Or both ? » But my heart has always been just very attached to my spanish, my Portorican culture. I was thinking that as a language, Spanish is just so much more romantic than English. Without disrespect to the English language ! (laughs) And as a songwriter, it is just easier for me to express myself in Spanish. Like I feel that I have more words to say, more things to say, more power to add to the lyrics. Although I hope that I can do both. Obviously, I want to be able to grow and maybe even record things in different languages.

13

Like, for example, with « Despacito », we are already doing... Next tuesday, I will record a Portuguese version. So yeah, we’re doing different versions. We already recorded an English version. So we’ll see, we’ll see where it takes us. On The Move Magazine : You released eight albums already, and are on the way to a next one. A lot of your songs have become hits along the way. Do you feel like you built a particular creation process or does each record feel like a new adventure ? Luis Fonsi : You know, you sort of create a little bit of a process with time. But that process always changes. You know what I mean, you sort of start a certain way, a certain order. There’s people I always write songs with, producers we always get together with but along the way, things start changing, new adventures start rising and those are usually the ones that really get something really different out of you. So, for this album, I started writing it two and a half years ago and I wrote a lot of songs, you know, but it wasn’t until I found the right people, the right producers that I kinda hit my groove and that’s when the best songs came out. On The Move Magazine : Within all these different adventures, these multiple years singing, touring, recording, what do you feel was the best lesson you learnt ? Luis Fonsi : Just to not be afraid. Not be afraid to express myself, to take chances. Not be afraid to fall. You know what I mean... If I fall ? Okay, I’ll get up. I’ll figure it out. Sometimes you take life so carefully, you try to be so careful about not making a mistake that you end up making a bigger mistake, you know. So, I think that’s the way I face and I see my career now, especially because, again, although this is kind of a new beggining, I have been doing this for 20 years so... I know who I am and more importantly, I know who I’m not. So, you just kind of find your corner and you enjoy it and creativewise, I’m not afraid to take chances. On The Move Magazine : You will release your new album this year and go on a tour, as you’re also a great performer. What can we expect from this new album and its adaptation to the stage ? Luis Fonsi : I’m gonna release here in the next couple of months a sort of special edition album for France. It’s gonna have « Despacito » of course, and it’s gonna have greatest hits. So it’s gonna remind people or show people what my previous life was all about (laughs). It’s gonna come out very soon. Maybe even like early

June. And then, after that, my new album will come out, which will probably be more like October. And that’s the new album I’ve been working on ! On The Move Magazine : Can you tell us more about this new album in terms of sound ? Luis Fonsi : Yes, my new album has a bit of a mixtured sound. I kind of have that same flow as « Despacito » which is a mixture between pop and urban and latin rythms and dance rythms. There will be a lot of dance tracks and great ballads as well. I’m a singer-songwriter so I like to have songs which are lyrically heavy . There are some great collaborations which we are working on now. I’m excited ! It’s going to be very very special ! I’m not afraid to say it’s gonna be my best album. On The Move Magazine : Did this new sound gave you fresh ideas for the live shows ? Luis Fonsi : Absolutely, it’s changing everything because it’s sort of a new sound so you have to make the older songs sort of sound like the newer songs. So, it’s interesting ! It’s been a fun ride kind of make the live shows come together. We start touring in June so we are in the process of putting together the live shows. I’m very excited about that !

« Despacito is a sensual song to just really enjoy » On The Move Magazine : You sold millions of copies of your albums, won countless awards and even sang for the Pope, at The White House or at the Nobel Price ceremony. What’s the next goal for your career ? Do you have any dreams unachieved ? Luis Fonsi : Yeah, my biggest thing is I just wanna have fun. I get to sing at special events such as singing for The President and for The Pope. But I think on a personal level, I wanna be able to keep having fun. And to keep getting to visit new countries. A lot of new doors are opening with « Despacito » and that’s amazing that I have been able to, for example, visit Paris for the first time with my music. We’ve been doing a European Tour so we were in Zurich, in Rome, next week to Amsterdam. We’re planning a trip to Japan. We get to know a lot of different cultures and new references so it’s only gonna make me grow, as a person and as an artist. That’s what I’m really looking forward to !

15

On The Move Magazine : You have a huge community of fans surrounding you. Yet, you try to keep close to them and to integrate them in collaborative projects such as singing or dancing videos of « Despacito ». Nothing would be possible without the internet and social media. What did it change in your career over the last years and which use do you make of it ? Luis Fonsi : I love the fact that social media has really changed the game, you know. The fact that we can communicate with the world with just one clic. It’s super powerful. We have a lot of powers in our hands, our phones. And I think just to keep us close to our audience, it’s very healthy, it’s very important. I like to follow people who I admire, newspapers, sports... I’m constantly just checking out to see what’s up. So, I think it’s great from an artist point of view to be close to my fans. Especially for the new fans who I’m getting to know. They can kind of see the person behind the song, without any filter. It’s just very natural and real. To me, I like to be very real, i’m just a very normal dorky guy. You know what I mean. I want people to see that ! And social media kind of opens up that curtain that sometimes, in the past, was closed because you wanted to keep the magic. I don’t think people like that sort of magic anymore. They want it to be crystal clear, to be really honest.

« I like to be very real, i’m just a very normal guy. I want people to see that !.»

From his first album «Comenzaré» in 1998...

On The Move Magazine : To finish, we heard you’re a coach on The Voice Chile. Which advice would you give to a young artist who would want to build a musical career ? Luis Fonsi : Again, not being afraid of taking chances ! Not giving up. It’s a though business like every business in the world. But it’s not impossible. Nowadays, with social media, with all these platforms, they can be heard. They should take advantage of that. Take your own path... That’s my biggest advice. Don’t try to sound like anybody, imitate another artist. Don’t do what’s been done. Just do what you believe in so, at the end of the day, when you go to bed at night, you’re proud of what you did !

WIZ KID

Nigeria’s biggest pop act invading the world

Summer is coming and everyone is fighting to make the world dance and sign the hit of the season. Last year, we witnessed Drake’s crowning with «One Dance» which was undeniably the song everyone knew by heart. On this special track, Drake displayed an amazing chemistry with 26 year-old Nigerian singer / songwriter Wiz Kid. The two artists are a team made in heaven knowing that the last time these two worked together they ended up breaking Spotify’s record, becoming the first song ever to reach 1 billion streams!

Born in Lagos, Wiz Kid started recording music at only 11. After signing with Empire Mates Entertainment, Wiz Kid started releasing original music. With «Superstar» in 2011, «Empire Mates State Of Mind», in 2012 and «Ayo» in 2014, the singer built up a loyal fanbase for himself, becoming one of the most promising Nigerian singers in the world. However, the artist reached global recognition with Drake and recently signed a new deal with RCA Records, home for singers like Justin Timberlake, Sia or Chris Brown. If he’s an artist on the rise you need to keep your eyes on, Wiz Kid is also a businessman. In fact, he established his label imprint Starboy Entertainment in 2013 and started signing new talents ever since. As he’s preparing the release of his forthcoming project named «Sounds From The Other Side», Wiz Kid starts to make a name for himself. Recently, the singer unveiled his first official single «Come Closer» where he paired with Drake again. The catchy dance-hall single is the kind of track you like to listen to on vacation, in the beach or in a party. Exactly what we need for this summer ! This time, Wiz Kid had the opportunity to showcase his deep African roots and influences along with his very own flow, something he couldn’t properly do on «One Dance», overshadowed by Drake. The «Come Closer» music video which has racked close to 14 million views was praised for its clean visuals, Afro-centric minimalism and celebration of African beauty.

«Everyone has a bit of Afro-pop in their music. Look at Drake and Alicia Keys for example. Everything is coming back home, I feel like Africa is going to take over the world with its sound. No one has really been able to take it there and show the real Africa, show what it’s about because there are so many beautiful things in Africa. That’s why i’m making sure we have Africa imprint in my videos and in my music.» Wiz Kid shows he’s attached to his roots and wants to make a difference by helping African music shine all over the world and we definitely can’t wait to hear more.

Listen if you are a fan ofCatchy, dance-hall, African-influenced songs. Listen to Wiz Kid if you’re a fan of Drake’s «Madiba Riddim» or «Your Number» by Ayo ft Fetty Wap.

One song to listen to«Sweet Love» is the bouncy song you need to have in your playlist. The track inspired by Ojuelegba is a song about him wanting sweet love and good vibe. It will put you in a good mood in no time.

JORJA SMITH

THE NEW golden voice

She may not have an album out yet, but Jorja Smith already caught our attention with her soulful voice and the release of her debut EP «Project 11». There is no doubt that Drake’s protégé already has what it takes to have a brightful career in the music industry. Zoom on one of the most promising voices of our generation. The sensitive soul of 19-year-old singer Jorja Smith has earned her the fourth place on the BBC Sound of 2017 list, following the path of some other successful british artists as Ed Sheeran, Emeli Sande and even Adele. What else did we need to love her already ? Since her phenomenal debut single «Blue Lights» last year, the british singer, Jorja Smith, has caught the attention of millions and seems more than ready to make her voice heard. She may only be 20 but her age doesn’t seem to stop her from talking about an intimidating list of subjects in her songs : from police brutality to the lack of education and the social classes, Jorja gives us an insight of what it’s like to be 20 in a world that is constantly changing. «Blue Lights is one of the many stories I wrote that hopefully will make people think. The song is about culpability and when you feel guilty even though you’ve done nothing wrong.» Approved by the American and foreign press, the track was streamed more than a million times during the following week. She is already compared to Lauryn Hill and Amy Winehouse both for her ability to master singing and rap and the maturity resonating in her sincere intimist lyrics. Following the success of «Blue Light», the young artist then unveiled a featuring with Maverick Sabre entitled «A Prince». For this track, the british singer borrowed a sample from another musical icon -17th Century composer Henry Purcell. Emotional and powerful, the song really showcases Jorja’s voice and gives us the impression that she has more power and ranges in reserve.

«My music teacher played the original song and I really liked it. I just heard it, wrote it down on a piece of paper, went back home, listened to it, looped the intro and pitched it down. That’s how I created ‘A Prince’, as simple as that.» With the notoriety that brought these first titles, Jorja Smith didn’t wait long to put out her first EP «Project 11». On «Something In The Way», a deep soul song, Jorja paid tribute to her idol Amy Winehouse. Then, she offered a beautiful yet melancolic song «So Lonely». Later, Jorja reunites with Maverick Sabre for another duet on «Carry Me Home» and finally «Imperfect Simple» transports us in another universe that is both poetic and powerful. Jorja Smith is a true artist who catches our attention and embarks us in her eclectic world filled with emotion, soulful lyrics and powerful beats. Talented and complete, the singer is already Drake’s protégé, who never stop to praise her talent. You heard it first, Jorja Smith is the next rising star.

Listen if you are a fan ofPowerful and honest songs. Jorja Smith isn’t the one to stay quiet when she has something in mind. Like her idol Amy Whinehouse, she stays true to herself and her beliefs.

One song to listen to«Blue Light», Jorja’s classic. She draws together her personnal experiences and make them musically spontaneous. Inspired by real stories and the world she grew up in, the song depicts Jorja’s life and feelings, and she’s only 20 !

DEAN LEWIS

MELANCHOLY AND INTENSITY

There’s nothing we like more than introducing you to new incredible emerging talents. Lately, Australia has been hiding some pretty amazing musical gems as Tash Sultana, who we talked about in the last issue. Dean Lewis unquestionably does honor to his compatriot. It’s your turn to be carried away by Dean Lewis and his melancholic pop-folk! From an early age, music was always around and important for the Australian singer- songwriter who grew up with the Beatles and Oasis. At 18, his father gave him one of his guitars as a present and the young artist began to play here and there. Things are progressing slowly until he gets spotted by Special Music Publishing, an independent record label known in Australia for its ability to discover emerging talents, with whom he signed in 2014.

As for his second single «Need You Now» released at the end of April, all the elements are gathered to be a new success. A sweet but catchy melody, touching lyricism and a sensitive and powerful timbre. From the first chords, we recognize the sound landscape of Dean Lewis and we cannot help but get overwhelmed by the emotions that the song sends back. The songs reflects the darker side of romance and the need for affection.

Dean Lewis is a prolific artist who has written and composed more than 150 songs in only two years, including his first single ever «Waves». Since its release at the end of last year, «Waves» has more than 7 million streams on Spotify, 2 million views on YouTube and ranked seventh in the iTunes charts in Australia. That’s what we call a great start!

Dean released his EP on May 12th featuring four other tracks along «Waves» and «Need You Now». His songs are consistent throughout the record, putting on an intimate atmosphere and blowing us off with raw, heartfelt lyricism accompanied by melancholic melodies. Only the last track is a cover of Amy Shark’s «Adore», a young songwriter and producer from Gold Coast, Australia whose song went to number one in the iTunes charts.

He has also grabbed international recognition by appearing in London and Berlin and performing «Waves» in one of the best-known television shows in the Netherlands, where the single has arrived in iTunes’ top 30 as well as in Spotify’s top 10. «I wrote the song about that excitement you have about the world when you’re a kid. I was in London about a year ago and wasn’t enjoying it as much as I thought I would. So I started thinking back to that excited feeling I used to have about the smallest things and began to wonder where it had gone – and how could I get it back.» It’s fair to say the song is emotional. «Wave» is a sincere pop-folk ballad, which hits you in the guts right from the first listen. A bittersweet feeling impregnates the whole track to gradually create a painful and intimate atmosphere caught in a storm of emotions: nostalgia, sadness, optimism. Dean Lewis perfectly balances intimacy and intensity and the way he interprets these feelings sweats authenticity.

It’s safe to say it’s easy to get carried away by listening to Dean Lewis but he has an undeniable songwriting talent blended with a mystery that adds a certain depth that most emerging talents can’t quite reach

Listen if you are a fan ofThe Lumineers, Local Natives, Of Monsters and Men and even James Blunt. If you dig melancholic melodies, Dean Lewis’ songs will steal your heart.

One song to listen toThe smash «Waves» to understand what the whole world is talking about. And to be swept off your feet right from the first listen.

BRIAN FRESCO Founding member of SaveMoney, the artistic community that includes Chance The Rapper, Vic Mensa and Joey Purp, Brian Fresco proves with his latest album «Casanova» that he is finding his lane. Fresco discovered music when he was in fourth grade, getting obsessed with Eminem’s 2002 album «The Eminem Show». Since this very first day, he kept pushing boundaries with his music squad on the streets of Chicago despite the rises and falls. If Brian Fresco wasn’t a household name to you by now, one listen to his incredible project «Casanova» will make him one. In a time when Chicago talent is blowing up, it’s time for you to discover your next hip-hop addiction.

ÂŤ I want everybody to recognize me as a force Âť

On The Move Magazine : First off, we are really happy to have you in our next issue. All the team really loved your excellent tape ‘Casanova’. Well done ! Brian Fresco : Thank you, I really appreciate it. I worked really hard on it. On The Move Magazine : When you met your friends Joey, Kami, Vic and Chance back in the day, did you already know that you wanted to pursue a career in music ? Brian Fresco : Well, me and Kami have been friends since the second grade. I met the other homies around 8th grade/freshman year. We all didn’t know we wanted to pursue music professionally when we met each other. We just all wanted to have fun and weren’t really worried about tomorrow. It was very organic the way things transpired. On The Move Magazine : You released your new project «Casanova» a couple of months ago. Even though each song is different and brings something to the project, «Dandelion» really stands up from the rest. The piano and the length give an emotional vibe to the song, could you tell us what’s the story behind the song ? Brian Fresco : When I was creating Dandelion I was in a really dark place. I don’t like to use the word depressed, but I definitely was under a lot of stress. I had no team; I was basically managing myself at the time, and I just had my whole career in my own hands, and it became very overwhelming. I was sipping codeine and abusing xans at a rate to my detriment. On The Move Magazine : Why did you choose «Casanova» as the name of this project ? Brian Fresco : Because I felt like it was the perfect display of me and the music I was creating in a nutshell. Smooth, charming, intellectual, informative, and woman loving. On The Move Magazine : «Casanova» is kind of eclectic. It includes danceable tunes like «Higher», slower ones and even this gospel-infused song «Golden», where do you take your inspirations from ? Brian Fresco : I grew up listening to a bunch of different styles of music-RnB, old RnB, reggae, a little bit of alternative rock, etc. I have a liking for a lot of different

sounds, and it shows through the songs I make. On The Move Magazine : As I said «Casanova» is hard to describe and define. Was it your goal to create something that can’t be labeled and put in a box ? Brian Fresco : Yes ! That is one of the things I wanted to capture. The sound of Casanova is really the fact that there isn’t a sound. It’s just good music. On The Move Magazine : You collaborated with your long time friend Chance The Rapper, can we expect some new songs with the rest of the Savemoney team in the future ? Brian Fresco : Yes, definitely. On The Move Magazine : Speaking of Chance, his new worldwide fame put the spotlight on the Chicago independent rappers and on the Chicago music scene in general. Do you see this as an accomplishment, something you and the Savemoney crew wanted to achieve at some point when you were younger ? Brian Fresco : We all wanted to see success in the Chicago music scene. So yes, it is something we kind of look at sometimes. It’s not just Chance; we take pride in the whole overall Chicago scene. There are tons of really dope talent getting the recognition they deserve now. On The Move Magazine : Are you working on new tunes at the moment ? Brian Fresco : Definitely, I have a really fun project that I’m working on right now that is starting to have some life. On The Move Magazine : Do you have some shows coming up ? Brian Fresco : I just came off a national tour, so I’m chilling for a few weeks, but we are planning to hit the road again sooner than later. On The Move Magazine : What’s your next goal as a rapper ? Brian Fresco : To keep transcending. I want everybody to recognize me as a force with this next project and these next moves I make.

OUR BEST ALBUMS

OF APRIL Every week of the year, a bunch of records are thrown into the world, portraying the singular influences, universe and sound of artists. Do you get lost in the numerous releases ? On The Move Mag is here to help. This month, as always, we opened our ears and dived into what matters most : music ! Whatever genre suits you, you’ll find something new to discover... Here are our favourite albums released this April.

31

No need to introduce him, he has achieved a proven reputation over the years and it seems like it will go on for a few more! British rapper and songwriter Tinie Tempah is back four years after his last record «Demonstration» which was certified Gold in the UK. With «YOUTH», the artist is giving a glimpse of all the influences that significantly impacted his music: grime, hip-hop, R&B or even indie pop. Each and every song is unique, and the rapper surrounded himself with la crème de la crème: Kehlani, WizKid, and surprisingly Jake Bugg. The album’s diversity works even though it can be confusing at first and we wouldn’t mind having more Tinie Tempah and less collaborations. But most importantly, the term «youth» refers to the time where you can dream without any limits or fears and that’s what Tinie Tempah wanted to share.

Top 3 : Lightwork, If You Know, Find Me

TINIE TEMPAH - YOUTH If you’re a fan of rock, this one’s for you. For over ten years the band has grown, so did their music and «Lovely Little Lonely» is the perfect example of what The Maine has become. By far their most personal and emotional release to date, the album gathers catchy tunesas «Bad Behavior» as well as timeless tracksfilled with emotion and nostalgia such as «Do You Remember (The Other Half of 23)». Later on the album, while «How Do You Feel» is a poignant song onanxiety about the past and future, there’s still positive vibes in every song. «Lovely Little Lonely» is an album that really embodies The Maine’s talent and sound while still having its particularities.

Top 3 : Bad Behavior, Black Butterflies and Déjà Vu, How Do You feel

The Maine - Lovely, Little, Lonely

Vancouver Sleep Clinic is one of those bands full of talent and potential, yet still (sadly) underrated. The Australian project led by Tim Bettinson could be compared to Bon Iver or Sigur Rós but VSC truly stands out with electronic beats and a subtle mix of soundscapes. Their debut album «Revival» has 10 tracks and each of them are true dreamlike gems, immersing us from start to the end into a transcendent universe that we do not want to escape. It features production works from Al Shux, who has worked with BANKS, Birdy and even Jay-Z, reinforcing the diversity of influences that impacted the record. The album is consistent throughout the tracks. Bettinson’s ethereal voice is accompanied by a progressive synthetic musical arrangement and introspective texts which go along modern EDM sounds, R&B inspired beats to post-rock instrumentals. The eponym last track goes crescendo and explodes at the end as the final bouquet of fireworks.

Top 3 : Killing Me To Love You, Living Water, Revival

Vancouver Sleep Clinic - Revival Falling In Reverse is back and it’s better than ever ! Emotionally raw and personal, «Coming Home» is one of those albumsthat perfectly put together old school vibes and electronic sounds. Particular songs like «Broken» or «Superhero» just make the whole thing perfect for the summer with their 80s feels, while «Hanging On» and «I’m Bad At Life» are very emotional and deep intotheir lyrics. The whole album feels more mature than their previous work and is probably more accessible.

Top 3 tracks : I’m Bad At Life, Coming Home, Superhero

Falling In Reverse - Coming Home

Damn, that’s good ! Two years after unveiling the well acclaimed «To Pimp A Butterfly», the rapper often described as «the best rapper in the world» did it again. In this new multifaceted record named «Damn», the California born artist goes deeper in his own mind and offers what it feels like America’s first Trump-era classic. This new album maintains its predecessor’s varied sonic palette and gives us the same groundbreaking and revolutionary hip-hop that Kendrick previously delivered. Mixing the timeless and the modern with the old-school and the next-level, the rapper brings out Rihanna, U2 and Zacari for three perfectly crafted featurings. This 14-track album - already certified platinum - is full of furious rhymes and expensive beats and is set to go down in history.

Top 3 tracks : Humble, DUCKWORTH., Loyalty

Kendrick Lamar - DAMN

Not long ago, The Chainsmokers rose to fame with their hit «Closer» featuring Halsey, a catchy yet simple tune that marked a newbeginning for the electronicduo. For the first time, Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall were not just behind the music but also provided vocals on their debut album. «Memories... Do Not Open» features 12 songs including their current hit «Paris». Songs like «Break Up Every Night» really showcasethe band’s desire to move forward and break away from their reputation of the ‘selfie’s boys’. Eventually, if you’re already a fan of the duo, chances are you’ll find one or two enjoyable songs as «Young», a track that captures The Chainsmokers’ identity and brings a bright note to the album.

Top 3 tracks : Closer, Young, Something Just Like This

The Chainsmokers - Memories... Do Not Open The French rock sphere put all their hopes in Last Train to carry on the genre. And their first proper album doesn’t disappoint ! Their heavy rock and rough energy is obviously still there but mastered, balanced, more structured. Old materials like electric «Cold Fever» or bluesy «Fire» are mixed with more mature new songs. Despite their young age, the four musicians didn’t surrender to the sirens of commercial and took this album as a nice laboratory, taking the time to develop long tracks. Their wild temperament also finds a softer, restrainted side on nice plaintive ballads. The passion definitely hits a peek on brilliant intros, bridges and outros. With «Weathering», Last Train proves they are anything but « Fragile », the name of their latest 2016 EP. They’re only in their twenties and are able to build and perform such a deep rock garage... Just imagine when they’ll actually be old weary rockers.

Top 3 tracks: Between Wounds, Jane, Weathering

LAST TRAIN - WEATHERING

Described as a tribute toLos Angeles, their adopted hometown, «LA Divine» is probably their best album to date since « Robbers and Cowards». The band C old War Kids putstogether a satisfying album that delivers great momentsand some catchy songs. Yes, there’s a lot going on, but don’t worry, everything is finely thought and balanced. Strongly focused on the vocals and the piano, there’s no doubt that this album will sweep you off your feet ! When «Free To Breathe» is a darkand stripped back song, the first single «Love Is Mystical» uses a powerful bassline until the chorus sets everything right. To conclude, Cold War Kids takes us on a memorable trip that is inarguably good.

Top 3 tracks : Invicible, LA River, Free To Breathe

Cold War Kids - L.A. Divine 33

ARTISTS & BRANDS WHICH COLLABS ARE ON ? We are not great fans of tacky, unsubtle advertisements that sometimes pop in our favourite artists’ universes... These products you don’t understand why they appear in the middle of a music video or these accessories a performer seems to be a bit too much into. Those partnerships are meant to go unnoticed to push you into consumption without you even knowing but most of the time, they really look unnatural. Though, sometimes, artists openly decide to collaborate with brands to produce new materials that would be the synthesis of their two identities. Yes, these ponctual associations also have a commercial goal somehow, but at least, creativity is put on the way ! Here are six nice collaborations to check out.

35

RIHANNA x PUMA Since 2015 and their first common collection that featured the now iconic creepers, Rihanna and the sportswear brand Puma continue to collaborate, putting the shoesaholic world upside down at every new piece. This year, the Bardabian queen of urban music proposes romantic bow sneakers and sandals. She also created with the brand a new hybrid shoe, between creepers, ballerina shoes and espadrilles. Available in pastel beige, pink and khaki colors, these pairs would be a bold accessory for a bad-ass classical dancer. A reflection of both sides of the singer -a sensitive yet strong woman and artist- put into fashion.

JUSTIN BIEBER x H&M Once a tour is over, merchandising is usually sold on an artist website, if it doesn’t simply disappear. But Justin Bieber definitely doesn’t do things like anyone else. After the first leg of his «Purpose Tour», one of the pieces first drew the attention of Urban Outfitters. But then, the plan got more serious. With 10 new items added to it, the collection got sold by giant swedish brand H&M. Hoodies and shirts printed with Bieber’s name, face or lyrics are available for less that 30€/ $35. A way to pursue the tour adventure for nostalgic beliebers. Bieber also worked with designer Jerry Lorenzo to think of edgier products to sell on tour.

PHARRELL WILLIAMS X ADIDAS Pharrell Williams will rock your eternal Stan Smith ! The American - we don’t exactly know if is more of an entertainer, producer or fashion icon now- launches the Tennis Hu with a brand new silhouette. Materials are different, lighter but colors definitely recall Adidas’ classic sneakers. The piece is part of a greater campaign, almost a belief. Hu is actually meant for Human. Clothes and shoes were previously released under this label, that celebrates cultural differences, collective power and just want to bring people together through fashion. When a brand uses its influence to promote positive values for our society, we’re just in for it !

Jessie J x Make Up Forever For a whole year, Jessie J and Make Up Forever are tying their names together. Through several launches, the cameleon British singer-songwriter will collaborate on the creation of make-up products and will be MUF’s muse-face, thanks to make-up artist Sammy Mourabit’s expertise. Jessie J expressed the synergy between the brand’s values and herself : «The core of the brand is what i am about: creating characters to showcase who you are, exploring and expressing yourself in the way you want through makeup, colors and energy.» She also released a sensual, uplifting cover video of Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” to celebrate this exciting and multi-sided collaboration.

A$AP Rocky x Guess

It is the second time American rapper, producer, actor and model collaborates with Marciano’s fashion brand. The new collection named «Guess Club» features colorful and fun pieces softly stainted with 90’s influences. A$AP Rocky explained : “It’s all tracking back to my childhood: Saturday morning and early afternoon with cereal and cartoons, toys, records and eight tracks, Toys ‘R’ Us. I want to be a kid forever.” You’ll find classic logo T-shirts, oversized denim jackets, jeans and caps. The whole collection keeps a unisex character, exactly like when you were a kid and it didn’t matter how you were dressed, as long as you could go out to play on the streets.

The Weeknd x H&M

Photos © All rights reserved

This was probably the most awaited collaboration for this spring. Canadian alt-RnB prodigy The Weeknd lauches a man collection with H&M. Chanelling his dark, sober elegance, the collection includes t-shirts, shirts, sweaters, bombers jackets and jeans. Twenty-seven stylish pieces have been created for this capsule. Don’t expect anything screaming colors or with spectacular cuts, all the pieces are classics in grey, khaki, black or blue. This is more about updating basics. But in a seriously beautiful and subtle way ! Once again, The Weeknd proves he’s got a seriously classy aura.

ARE THEY WORTH

SEEING LIVE ? 39

ALL TIME LOW It is a storm with 4 different sides that crushed l’Elysée Montmartre in Paris a few weeks ago ! With a temperament of fire, armed with guitars and their eternal pop-punk sound, All Time Low threw the venue to flames for their first date in Paris since 2015. Though they already have 6 albums and 2 DVDs out, Alex Gaskarth, Zachary Merrick, Rian Dawson and Jack Barakat still renew themselves and surprise their fans ! The band recently switched labels. They left Hopeless Records for the famous Fueled By Ramen, which also signed Twenty One Pilots and Panic At The Disco. With this new contract were released two new tracks – « Dirty Laundry » and « Last Young Renegade » – which clearly announced a new era for the band. Although the sound of those songs is a bit different from the punk signature of ATL -more pop, with electro accents at times- , the band didn’t change a thing about their stage presence : same energy, same style and same charisma ! The tension is tangible in the dark venue before the four guys hit the stage... Fans started queuing early in the day and wouldn’t miss a French ATL show. Finally, brilliant lights come out and the four musicians appear. They start the gig with the powerful and bouncy « Kicking & Screaming » from their latest album « Future Hearts ». The tone is given and the night is full of promises ! A wild ride to come. The set continues with classic « Weightless » on which melody everyone in the room sing their heart out. For the whole show, a great balance is found between old and new materials. The crowd is driven by an undeniable passion

when « Somewhere In Neverland » , « Guts » , « A Love Like War », « Backseat Serenade » or sweet and calm « Therapy » are played. When it is undeniable that All Time Low give all they have on heavy and powerful tunes, they also know how to play pause and throw a beautiful wave of emotions out there. The band obviously played more recent songs like « Something’s Gotta Give » , « Kids In The Dark » , « Cinderblock Garden ». Structured with heady gimmicks, these tracks have a huge federating power and voices rise from the audience as one. Between performances, the band interacts with their fans with the humour and craziness that define them. They tell jokes at each other and play with unusual accessories thrown from the crowd. To picture the silliness, guitarist Jack Barakat’s mic is almost swallowed up by a mountain of bras. Temperature is rising indeed ! Soon, « Take Cover » taken from « Straight to DVD II: Past, Present, and Future Heart » announces the end of this electric show. The artists leave the stage for a few minutes before coming back, wilder than ever, to perform « Lost in Stereo » and then « Dear Maria, Count Me In » which closes almost every show of the band since 2008. This combinaison of hits offers a last graceful moment. The public, in return, delivers every scrap of energy he got left to end this lively night well. After such a show, the excitment for next All Time Low album is at his maximum. « Last Young Renegade » will be out on June 2nd. In Paris, it was totally their week-end and globally, it’s definitely gonna be their year !

LOIC NOTTET After releasing his debut album «Selfocracy» a couple of weeks ago - showing everyone what he is capable of - 21 year-old Loïc Nottet has recently started his very first headline tour in Belgium and France, with a first sold-out show in Paris at Le Trianon. As he stated in the exclusive interview included in our previous issue, Loïc has given «Selfocracy» a cinematographic dimension and wanted to turn the atmosphere he created on the album into a real live experience. Each song is performed following the order of the tracklist, litteraly giving life to the record’s story. Opening his set with the spoken track «Selfocracy», the public discovered a video of the singer trapped in a maze made of mirrors, struggling to get out. Mirrors and their reflections along with the idea of self-absorption are indeed the main themes of Loïc’s debut album. The next song «Mud Blood» showed the audience that Loïc is planning on dancing and singing at the same time. After watching the «Million Eyes» music video and acknowledging Loïc’s dancing skills, we wondered if the singer would take the risk and try to do both on stage. Now our prayers have been answered and the artist brilliantly mixed his two passions to create an unique cocktail of Art.

The singer also demonstrated that he stayed close to his fans by chatting with them during the set or collecting personally and thanking each person who offered him gifts. The artist gave the audience different kind of vibes during the show : on one hand we met the Loic we know, singing his heart out on songs like «Cure» or «Poison». However we discovered another side of the singer : the fearless artist who created an entire world behind his music and is not afraid of defending it by using dance and visual arts. It was a risky bet but it paid off. The show ended with the song «Rhythm Inside» which was the one he performed at the Eurovision 2015. The young artist will sweep you off your feet by showing he’s as good live as he’s on the record and his professionalism and talent make him a real showman. Hands down, gentleman.

The singer performed his whole album while showing the deep meaning behind each song by adding colorful settings, constantly changing. From the emotional moment during «Million Eyes» where the singer showcased his incredible vocals, to the stunning dance during «Wolves», Loic Nottet set the bar quite high.

CHARLOTTE OC Charlotte OC is one of those talents to follow, an artist in which we truly believe because she’s got exactly what it takes (and more) to succeed. She was the cover girl of our March issue, right before she released her album « Careless People ». The record is a cocktail of enchanting pop, mixed with electro beats, a r’n’b infused groove and a warm soulful voice. Charlotte OC is a true storm of energy, who knows how to display her vulnerability and keep up with a dark, mysterious universe. Though these multiple aspects of her music and personality were already perceptible in the 11 tracks of her record, her show at Le Badaboum (Paris) in March 26th was the perfect opportunity to measure it live. The gig was short but incredibly intense ! At 26 years old, the British singer-songwriter shows an impressive confidence, balanced with her natural, solar character between songs. Opening the show with heavy «Blackout», we quickly understand that no note is at the wrong place when Charlotte OC sings. The vocal performance is so perfect you could think it is pre-recorded. Beyond the voice, it is the way Charlotte OC acts on stage that really catches our attention. She seems inhabitated by every song in a different way but with the same strength. The facial expressions and gestures of the British artist, almost disturbing at first, quickly become fascinating. She’s got a distant look, as if she was talking to someone only her could see. Charlotte OC gives life to every word. Her face twisting, her hands dancing, she inhabits every square meter of the tiny stage and brings us in all kinds of stories, adventures and emotions.

From irresistible « Colour My Heart » and its gospel vibes to languorous « I Want Your Love » , Charlotte OC spins round between catchy tracks and organic propositions like the haunting « Where It Stays ». « Darkest Hour », in which studio version you could hear the ghosts of Lana Del Rey, finds a deeper interpretation. Beetween each song, Charlotte OC’s theatrical mask falls and Charlotte Mary O’Connor starts talking to her audience as if they were her friends, smiling and laughing, flashing timidity when some « We love you Charlotte » are shouted across the venue. A particular moment is shared when Charlotte OC sings « In Paris »... for the first time in actual Paris ! After around 10 tracks, she apologizes for the last one to come : « Running Back To You », with a burning chorus that made everyone dance. The crowd is not that happy... It definitely would have wanted the show to go on. An encore maybe ? No. Harsh return to reality. Charlotte OC definitely passed her transition from teenage girl to woman, in the music industry. She took the time to know who she wanted to be, and not be, both as an artist and as a person. For example, she chose to shut off some sides of her career, like 2011 album «For Kenny», in order to build a strong repertoire. And now that she found herself, nothing seems to stop her. She expresses herself with no concessions, through voice, music and body. Every song has a cathartic side for her and her audience as well. She looks like no other. Some might say she’s too much... For us, it is not enough. Charlotte OC put Paris at her feet and soon, it will be the world. We bet on it !

WHAT’S UP RUBY CUBE, PRODIGY FLUO KIDS

IN FRANCE ? CHILLA, THE NEW FACE OF FRENCH RAP SCENE

Pay attention to that bunch of fun kids with regressive styles, coming from Toulouse... They’re the most brilliant representatives of electro-pop new generation ! Samson (vocals/synths), Joseph (guitar/ synths), Eliott (guitar/vocals) Christophe (basse/synths) and Arthur (drums/vocals) didn’t exactly found each other through music. Two of them are brothers and met the others in their youngest years of school... But yet, they sound like they were bound to play together. They started making music seriously around 2011, quickly making waves by winning french competition Emergenza. Two years later, they released a promising first EP with 3 tracks : «Utopia». Rock you would dance onto, angry electronica... Ruby Cube already had that multiple-sided identity which constantly jumps between 80s nostalgia and utterly contemporanean sound. At times, some hip-hop even pops. After a break to finish their studies, Ruby Cube came back, more determined than ever to make music as a living. And they also returned with sharpest references, in terms of music and visual. Since last year, they released three excellent tracks, all accompanied by brilliant, cinematic videos. «Lobsters & Cherries», «Blood In Love» and «Precious Stone» were given visuals that play with weird and colorful influences from J J Abrams’ Super 8 or David Lynch’s work, in a result to make you dizzy. Some of the effects could easily be stolen from OK Go. Musically, with their irresistible synths, Ruby Cube plays on the same court as Two Door Cinema Club, Miike Snow or MGMT, exploring darker sides sometimes, closer to Jamie XX. Ruby Cube’s music is as playful and complex as the game that inspired their stage name... And we hope their sound will stay as timeless !

Fresh, fierce and young, Chilla is, at only 22, set to be big in the near future. She learned how to play violin for 12 years, startingoff her musical journey by posting various covers on YouTube. Mareva Rana soon chose the pseudonym Chilla to express her very own feelings. «The rap part wasn’t planned at all but, the more i wrote, the more I felt like I needed to give an identity to my songs and my music. I didn’t want to do a rap that was either feminist or engaged. It just happened and i’m happy with that» In an open letter sent to the french president read over 300,000 times, Chilla expressed her doubts, her fearsand her frustration over the world she was forced to grew up in. As the narrator of a whole new generation she wrote : «It is difficult to understand people who don’t dress like us or lives among us. They don’t know how it’s like to live like us and they do nothing to help us.» In a world filled by stereotypes and meaningless artists, Chilla seems ready to settle and make her voice heard in the rap industry with her songs mixing soul, rap, dancehall and reggae.

FRENCH TOBACCO, GLOWING TROUBADOUR HOSHI : YOUTH AND HONESTY At only 20, Hoshi is a diamond in the rough. In her song, Mathilde -her real name-mixesher doubts and her hopes, balances her rage and her youth , her love and her melancholy. This loner givesus an insight of the world she lives in, without judgment. And then there is this voice. A raspy yet sublime voice with a shocking intensity and perfectly imperfect cracks when pushed to the extreme. If you closed your eyes and opened your ears to French Tobacco’s sound, you’d be taken in a second to the American desert, following a young troubadour singing his highs and lows towards the vast landscape. But, you’re in front of a screen, French Tobacco is actually french and that’s only the magic trick of this young musician happening : that undeniable power to make people travelling through his uplifting music.

The outside world, a memory, her family and friends, everything is a source of inspiration and can lead to a song for the young girl and artist that is Hoshi. Inspired by some of the greatest french artist sas Jacques Brel, Noir Desir or Serge Gainsbourg, Hoshi seeks authenticity in her music and the people surrounding her.

Behind that name -given by an old barkeeper in Scotlandhides Sacha Page. He started making music when he was a teenager, first as a drummer, then guitarist and finally singer, more because his band needed one first but we’re glad he took the step ! After making a quick appearance on french TV show «Nouvelle Star» in 2010, he decided to stay away from the mediatic side of the industry and learn more about it by travelling. That’s exactly where he found it easier to write and compose : on the road. He toured the UK and also studied there, playing his music everywhere he could.

Her first single «Comment Je Vais Faire» is hypnotic. Her feeling of not being in the right place isthe main source ofthis first single. A sneak peek of what her debut album will sound like. Keep an ear out for this young and refreshing artist. We place our bet on Hoshi !

With a velvet voice and a perfect english he probably shaped on his british journey, French Tobacco tells stories he build from his own experiences and others’. He’s got the soul of an old blues man nuanced by the positivity of his youth. His heady melodies are built on great guitar skills and he masters the art of whistling like no other. A trademark we can hear all along the tracklist of his first album «Straight Ahead» released in 2015. Recently, French Tobacco supported american singersongwriter Gavin DeGraw on his parisian acoustic show. On his own, his foot giving the rythm, this modern cow-boy - gracefully chanelling Sam Cooke or Johnny Cash’s vibesmade a great impression... When you connect so quickly with an unknow audience, it is usually the sign for beautiful things ahead !

OTM TEAM PAM

editorial director I spend most of my time apologizing to my favorite streaming platform for ripping off their «add to playlist» button. When i’m not looking for new artists to talk to you about I drown myself in a sea containing a mix of old R&B and punk-rock sound. Sometimes I go to concert venues more often than I go to bed and I listen to music even when I sleep. I’ll be probably deaf in 40 years but knowing you’ll discover new artists through this mag makes everything worthwhile.

ELODIE

writer Longtime writer for OTM, I love being able to talk about my favourite tracks and artists online. Got a passion for pop, indie and rock bands, Harry Potter and photography. You can usually find me at venues, front row, next to the following curly girl. Spending way too much money on those travels and gigs. But, we only got one life, better get the most out of it !

Wannabe architect, musical writer by passion. I am in love with matter, music and words. Drunk with british indie-rock and popfolk. I guess my wildest dream would be designing and building a gig venue, for which I would decide the opening line-up. In the meantime, I am the curly girl with too much hair, front row.

Who am I, in a nutshell? Daydreamer, traveler at heart, sees beauty in everything, concert addict, Germany lover. Music is my escape route and my best friend. Fun fact: I actually own a guitar since I was 4 but I don’t know how to play. I am also the girl that’s like “Hey you gotta listen to this!” and 2 hours later we’re still on YouTube… Oops!

Meet the youngest of the crew ! Aspiring music journalist and communication student, I spend most of my free time surrounded by books and hot chocolate. Basically obsessed with british pop music and indie artists, if you’re looking for me you’ll probably find me singing my heart out at a concert. if i could turn back time, i’d definitely pop to the Panic! At The Disco show in Chicago in 2006.
