EDITO ‘‘

In the current music industry where radios, TV and streaming are the big players deciding to spread the word about an artist (or not), it becomes more and more difficult for a lambda artist to get his music heard if he doesn’t fit some kind of criterias. It takes time, it takes patience, talent but above all it takes a lot of hard work. At On The Move Magazine, we give a particular attention to talent no matter where you come from, your musical genre, the amount of followers/views/fans you have got. We don’t talk quantity, we talk quality. We talk quality because we love music with the big M. We carefully choose the artists you’ll discover in this magazine to introduce you to «la crème de la crème». You’ll find big names, you’ll find unknown names. You’ll love what you’ll listen to, maybe you will hate it but at least, you’ll give our artists a chance. Because at the end of the day, every success story began with a chance given. ‘‘

TIMEFLIES From university buddies to band mates, Cal Shapiro and Rob Resnick managed to mix different kinds of music from hip-hop to electro, creating an ingenious and unique cocktail of sound. Formed in 2010, the band succeeded in building a diehard following, selling out concert venues accross the US thanks to their weekly program which turned into a real phenomenon: The Timeflies Tuesday ! Timeflies add their mark into popular songs to make those hits their own. From Christina Aguilera and Adele to The Wanted or Clean Bandit, the band put their own vision into the songs everybody knows and we sometimes wonder which version is the best ! The two musical masterminds have three original albums out and are already working on the fourth. Timeflies is set to have a great year and the duo, who was in Paris for their ÂŤ Party In The Basement Âť tour, gave us an exclusive interview.

5

OTM Mag : How do you feel about being oversees, playing your music for your international fans for the very first time ?

Cal : I think it’s electro hip-hop. Like we have the hip-hop, we have the pop, we have the electro but I think it’s about fun dance music.

Cal : We feel like we try to make everything about our fans and that really happens for us in the US because we get to go see them multiple times a year and play for them all over the country. But the fact we have fans here and we haven’t got to play, for us is kinda like, I feel like we miss you and now, be here to play for them it’s like a homecoming, a reunion and a bad ass show all in one.

Rez : Emotional dance music.

OTM Mag : You moved in the West Coast during the middle of your tour where you were promoting your album “Just for fun”, does that change your influence or do you feel it brings something new to your music ? Rez : I think we sort of had a transition from being all in the studio in New York where we leave our appartment to get a cab, got to the 47 street or wherever we’ve got some studio to set up for the day, work a few hours and go home. Nown it’s in my basement so Cal comes over and we sort of kick it whenever we want and that’s been a really nice thing and sort of how we started Timeflies so we’re back to that which is great. Also, obviously, the West Coast is a super chill place and a lot less stressful so that’s been reflecting in our music, maybe gave us a better opportunity to sort of being retrospective and now look at life in another way. We’re still making bangers and electro hip-hop but it is better. OTM Mag : You guys are commonly described as an “electro-pop music band” but you include hip-hop and R&B influences to your music, so how would you describe your sound ? Rez : I think you nailed it, it’s hard for us to describe our sound with words.

Cal : We like to have real messages in our songs, and really connect with people, tell real stories and capturing real moments. So, I think, it’s just a positive dance hip hop music.

« It’s hard for us to describe our sound with words.» OTM Mag : What do you think is the main difference between « The Scotch Tape », «After Hours» and «Just For Fun » ? Cal : The Scotch Tape was a raw project and I think that’s really cool our fans still connect a lot to it. We still love listening to it and there are songs that last 7 minutes and we’re like “why? Why was that song that long”, we did not know at that time and we still don’t (laugh). We just finished school and we were like “let’s fuck around and make some music” and that’s what “The Scotch Tape” is like. Then after that, “After Hours” was the first time we’ve even gotten to a room with any other artists or songwritters. At the beginning, we hated this process of working with other people because they always have been reasonable. But at the end of the day, we picked up a lot of cool tricks from those talented people. “After Hours” still has that electro, old-school vibe. Regarding “Just For Fun”, I feel like we went a little bit different and we said “let’s do stuff that doesn’t need to be that dance, it doesn’t need to have that drop it just got to be like cool”. We got away from it a little bit now I really love listening to that project but I feel our sound is kind of way better now.

OTM Mag : Where do you want to see Timeflies going in the future ?

OTM Mag : What can we expect from you in 2017 ?

Rez : We have 6 – 10 songs that are super fire and we are finishing them and want to put this out. We decided to do a sort of EP or mixtape in the future. Right now, we’re about to leave Europe which is really sad but we’re going back to the US to figure out what our next move is and play more shows !

Cal : I think Rez and I have never made better music in our career.

OTM Mag : If we look at your playlist, what would we find ? Cal : In my playlist you’ll find a lot of stuff from Janis Joplin to Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’ or… I’m very much about moments like, if I’m trying to go to sleep, I’ll have that sleep playlist. Then, if I’m trying to get hyped up, I have chill dance and hot dance music. I got a bit of everything and our music kind of reflects that.

Rez : I think when we’ll look back at “Once In a while” or “Gravity” we’ll be very proud but this new stuff is next level. We’ve been very mysterious with our fans about this new collection of music and what we’re going to do with it. 2017 we’re fucking coming for you !

« Do you know this guy Stromae ? He’s dope ! I really want to collaborate with him! »

OTM Mag : You released your single “Gravity” a couple of weeks ago, are you working on a music video ? Rez : Yes ! Cal : We just wrapped it. Rez : It’s done. Cal : Actually, it’s funny. We finished a show in Minnesota so we’ve been on tour for two and a half months because we did the US leg and now this, but we finished the show and went to a strip club, woke up, flew to LA, shot the video. We wanted to make this video more worldly because the song feels very worldly and so we wanted to capture that and then we shot this for two hours and flew to Denver for our next show. It happened very fast but we were very involved in the process. Rez : it’s dope

7

OTM Mag : You collaborated with many artists through your different projects, now who would you like to collaborate with if you could choose anybody in the world ? Cal : If it could be anyone, maybe just get Banks in the studio to vibe. She’s my influence at the moment. Rez : Wow (laugh) this is not the number one person I’d pick but that’s cool. Cal : (laugh) Who would you pick ? Skrillex right ? Rez : Yes I think I’d go for Skrillex. I know it’s not a classic answer but Skrillex is just the best !

Why should you start listening to Timeflies ? • Cal actually can sing and rap live. In a world full of auto-tune where technologies can make you believe someone has a nice voice when they haven’t, that’s pretty cool to know some singers out there can actually ... sing for real. • Rez always drops some dope beats and can turn any sad song into a party song. • Their music videos can make you swoon. Especially the « Swoon » music video. Now you’re intrigued. • Their palette consists of pop, hip-hop and electronica, and the end result is unique and indefinable, which means that if you’re into one of those genres, you’d find what you’re looking for in Timeflies’ music. • Their happy and down-to-earth personalities reflecting in their sound. Haven’t heard of Timeflies’ version of Adele’s «Someone Like You» yet ? No tears shed, that’s the first time I want to dance on a Adele’s song. Worth a listen !

16 ARTISTS

TO WATCH IN 2017 While these past few months have been good to some musical big names -whose return were very much awaited- there is a bunch of new talents out there that clearly deserve a part of the light. May have they drawn attention throught 2016 or may their name be rather unknown, here are 16 artists whose careers are bound to take off in 2017 !

TOR MILLER

In the jungle that is New-York, there’s one voice that deserves to be heard. From local gigs to touring with the likes of James Bay, Tor Miller made his way to success with nothing but passion, hard work and a raw voice that effortlessly shows his talent in soulful ballads and an old-school sound look that remind us of Richard Beymer and Elvis Presley. As if his voice wasn’t enough, Tor put up a mature and powerful first album nourished with personal stories and sensitivity : “American English” is the perfect balance between 70s references and contemporary sounds. A coherent album and an artistic spirit that holds everything together but still explores different universes.

JESSARAE

Only a few years ago, Jessarae came to the UK to write and ended up staying, making his way to the success with two impressive EPs featuring tracks that reflect on fame, authenticity and identity. A strong start for an artist who’s been writing since he was 9, learned the guitar in a self-taught way and was influenced by artists like Damian Rice. If “Nobody’s Human” puts the roughness of Jessarae’s voice in the foreground and uses a more organic melody,“Milk&Honey”is carried by warm choruses and filled with blues and soul. A beautiful demonstration of the eclecticism of his sound and promises a brightful career to the young boy.

zak abel

In life, there’s people that are just annoyingly good at everything they do: from tennis table star to pop music sensation, Zak Abel is another pop star to have emerged recently. For his debut EP «Joker Presents : Zak Abel» released in 2015 at Atlantic Record and it was dubstep pioneer Joker who took charge of it. The one who defined his music as modern, fresh and dynamic soon delivered a second EP called «One Hand On The Future» : from the groovy «Bring It Home» to the excellent production «Say Sumthin», Zac seduces by his inspirations ranging from Michael Jackson to James Brown and his raw and powerful voice à la John Newman. The release of his debut album «Only When We’re Naked» promises to make a world star out of him.

JP COOPER

Fresh from a massive collaboration with Jonas Blue on «Perfect Strangers», JP Cooper is ready to surge ahead under his own name. After being called the «Future Sound», JP released his ‘When The Darkness Comes’ EP and created storms with his track «Five More Days» featuring Avelino and the smash hit «September Song». Next up is JP Cooper album which promises to be bigger and better; with a sense of honesty and simplicity. Featuring soulful songs and hip-hop elements, there will also be unexpected twist and turns. You heard it first, JP isn’t an artist that is predictable or conventional.

dua lipA

RAG'N'BONE MAN

Rhys Lewis

KEHLANI

Following Britney Spears and Rihanna, it is now Dua Lipa’s turn to leave her mark on pop music. After making waves with her debut single «New Love», Dua captured all the attention with hits like the catchy «Be The One» and the sassy «Blow Your Mind (Mwah)» and joined Troye Sivan on his Suburbia tour. A big step for the young lady who’s getting ready to release her first self-titled album which promises to be full of personal experiences, past relationships, hopes, sickness and being proud of who you are and being confident. Among other rising young stars who are making their way in the music industry, Dua is creating her very own musical lane.

He may have a body built like a viking but his voice sounds like an angel. Under the name Rag’n’Bone Man, Rory Graham first gained a reputation singing the blues over hip-hop beats, he then writes songs inspired by gospel, folk and hip-hop and pour his soul into his songs and sing them as if his life depended on it. Althought not new to the music industry, Rag’N’Bone Man rose to recognition in 2016 with his hit «Human» and a raw and raspy voice not unlike Joe Cocker. After 3 Eps, his debut album named «Human», is a mix of personal and heard stories. Keep his name and voice in mind, he’s set to be huge in 2017 !

Originally from Oxford, this young artist built his own musical path by performing on local british scenes, posting covers on YouTube and releasing songs with his group «Rhys Lewis and The Relics». It was only after signing his solo contract with Decca that Rhys Lewis impressed everyone with the release of his debut single «Waking Up Without You» from his upcoming album . The british boy unveiled a pop/rock song with a powerful and catchy chorus and well placed guitar riffs that suggest a bright future for the young songwriter and his sweet yet rocky voice. Mark our words, we place our bet on Rhys Lewis for this year !

Here’s one who starts 2017 the right way. She may have just come under our radar, but the Oakland native singer Kehlani is not new to the industry as she was the lead singer of PopLyfe at only 14. Leaving her «Pop Life» behind, the singer is nowadays more commonly known for her honest and powerful RnB sound. With her mixtape «You Should Be There», Kehlani has established herself as one of the most promising artists of her generation. Recently she dropped «Undercover», a single that delivers on her promise. It gives a nice and modern touch to the pop/RnB melody and put her vocals upfront.

13

aaron camper

Aaron is no stranger to the music industry : From Salisbury, the grammy-nominated artist grew up as one of the talented son of a preacher and eventually caught the attention of artists like Diddy, David Guetta and Jill Scott. He’s now more than ready to leave his mark on the musical landscape with his crystal clear voice that adds a nice touch to the current RnB backdrop. After teasing his followers with songs like «Madness» and «Choose You», he recently dropped his debut album «Blow» including vibrant love song and authentic lyrics. Get ready because Aaron Camper is ready to explode !

DVSN

DVSN -pronounced division, may be new to the musical scene, but RnB fans have sure already heard of Nineteen85 and Daniel Daley. Nineteen85 is known to be Drake’s producer and has participated to the production of «Views» certified 4x platinum. Joined by Daniel, they created RnB sound with a heavy electro background. Their debut album «Sept 5th» is a mix of their influences and previous works with a bit of heavy beats which make us think of other OVO’s artists. The album uses a contemporary sound to explore the positive aspect of sensuality. It feels more mature and respectful , even sweet at times and can be read as a kind of romantic guide.

eloah jones

At only 17, Eloah Jones has already stepped in the music industry and recently released her first single «Soldier». She began acting and singing at the age of 11 and her perseverance finally paid off as she caught the attention of some producers. Inspired by Selena Gomez, Lana Del Rey and Jones, Eloah has a captivating and powerful voice that will soon find itself in your favourite playlist. Written in only 30 minutes, «Soldier» is one of those songs that remind us that everything happens for a reason and that we have to fight like a soldier for what we think we deserve. A hopeful and sweet life lesson from a promising young artist.

JUPITER PROJECT

Gavin Correia and Marty Rich, otherwise known as Jupiter Project, aren’t new to the musical scene in their native New Zealand. Following the success of their catchy single «You & Me», the electronic duo is ready to make waves with the release of their debut album . The talented duo also shared the stage as an opening act with the likes of Flume, Jason Derulo or even Will.i.am. Their highly anticipated album will feature smooth vocals over dance inducing production that promise to get the dance floors moving throughout the globe. Keep an ear out for this duo and their fresh and new sound.

VIC MENSA

RUSS

NAUSE

rationale

Vic Mensa is one kid from Chicago that works to tell the truth to people. Probably one of the most talented new rappers of his generation, Vic is a committed artist whose words and strong messages strike like a knife in the heart. The release of his EP «There’s A Lot Going On» gave us a nice taste of what the protégé of Kanye West album’s will be. This artist took rap elements from Drake and RnB from The Weeknd to create his own sound. Learning from the greatest, Vic is a true student of the game and brings a refreshing touch to the music industry with his uncompromising creativity. Don’t be surprised, Vic Mensa is definitely the next big thing !

It’s often stated that the main problem in today’s hip-hop is that all the artists sound the same. Native from New Jersey, Russ is one of those artists that are extremely creative, consistent and unique as the young rapper not only writes and sings his music but also produces, mixes and masters his own very sound. His latest mixtape «Silence» dropped in 2014 but since then, Russ only put out singles. All his songs are very different from each other : while «Losin Control» is a very down to earth song, «Fallin’ Too» starts with a funky melody mixed with a heavy drum line. If you aren’t a fan of Russ yet, just listen to his perfect flow à la Eminem and you’ll be conquered.

While Sweden’s pedigree for modern dance talents is pretty well documented thanks to Avicii or Alesso, few have risen its ranks to the same tune of versatility as Nause, the duo formed by Jacob Criborn et Léonard Schej. In only a few years the Stockholm-based breakout group has ascend the industry spectrum like few of their generation all thanks to their united passion and their unique sound. Using their talents in the studio, what started as a hobby soon became the life and breath of their everyday lives. Their latest hit «Dynamite» brings a colorful touch to today’selectro sound. A must have for all the electro-fans !

Pharrell Williams already loves him and you might as well jump on the bandwagon and wrap your ear around Rationale’s golden voice. His music is funky, with some RnB touch and an electronic sounds. Each song comes with a particular texture which takes every genre and mixes them together with a nice Rationale touch. Loved by everyone from Pharrell Williams to Justin Timberlake, Rationale is ready to climb up the music ladder with his new EP «Vessels». Song after song, the British boy never ceases to amaze us with his virtuosity. Keep his voice and name in mind, you’ll hear about Rationale soon enough !

CALUM SCOTT Calum Scott might not be a name you’re familiar with right away but you’ve already heard his voice somewhere for sure. The 28 year-old british singer-songwriter came to worldwide attention after taking part of Britain’s Got Talent in 2015. Not only he blew the judges’ minds away but he also conquered the public and became the first solo artist from Hull, his hometown, to have a top 40 single since 1960. In fact, his cover of Robyn’s «Dancing On My Own» is certified platinum in many countries including the UK and Australia. Sit down and meet Great Britain’s new fiancé !

17

OTM Mag : Why did you decide to cover « Dancing On My Own » in the first place ?

OTM Mag : What can we expect from your debut album ?

Calum Scott : I kinda discovered it by accident and on purpose. I was looking for music where I could add my own voice to. I wanted to find a song that would challenge me and I could showcase my vocals for. I was searching on the internet and I found the piano version of « Dancing On My Own » and I remembered the original version which is incredible, I love Robyn. I remember I recorded the first part of it, first verse and chorus, and I invited my mom and my sister to the studio and I said « just listen to it and let me know what you think » and they were crying. I thought « wow, if I made them cry that’s a good sign, isn’t it ? » that’s the reason why it’s done so well, i’m proud of it.

Calum Scott : I’m going to release the album this spring, it’s around the corner. It’s gonna have ballads in there. I love ballads and sad songs. But there’s also some up tempo and happy stuff in there as well and it’s nice because people know me for my ballads but there’s some stuffs in there that’s going to make people move around a little bit. I like that. It shows versatility and that I can do more than just sing sad songs. I don’t want to make people cry all the time (laugh). I want to make people smile as well. The album is more or less written about me, or experiences i’ve been through, or experiences people close to me have been through. It’s not just about me and how I feel but also about other people’s opinions and experiences. Some of the best songs I’ve got are from real feelings whether is a heartbreak or good times. I just want to be hopeful and I think the songs on the album are a reflection on how I feel life and I think the songs that stick around are always about how somebody feels.

OTM Mag : « Dancing On My Own » has done so well in 2016 in the UK and in a couple of other countries, did you expect this kind of reaction ? Calum Scott : No, I didn’t expect that. When I first put it online before I was on the show, it received some love but I expect it to be from the people who are looking on the internet, and might find it and might like it but I didn’t expect for it to go global. It just traveled all around the world and it made me feel so humble and so privileged that people listen to the song, buy it and listen to it on Spotify or Itunes. It just makes me feel so happy. OTM Mag : It was what you wanted from the beginning ? Calum Scott : Yes, it went from me putting out songs just for the love of music to me genuinely wanting to connect with people and for people to enjoy the song. I feel very lucky being able to do the job I absolutely love.

OTM Mag : Are you going to stick to the style you’re used to ? Calum Scott : Yes, I’ve got to keep the same because it’s what people, I feel, fell in love with. I don’t want to take that away from anybody, I don’t want to take that away from myself. I want to stick to what I’m used to and I’m used to sing sad songs and ballads but I’m happy with that because that’s what I connect within the music. I feel like eventually you have to do something you can connect with and something you can listen to and really enjoy. The main reason why I started singing is to have genuine connection with people, to change people’s mindset, whether they’re sad or going through a tough time, hopefully they might find some solace in my music. It might help them. I’ve got a lot of messages on Facebook and Twitter, just people saying how much the song has helped them when they were in pain. I’m proud the song helped people as well. OTM Mag : There tends to be a very small window when shows like Britain’s Got Talent finish to capitalize the attention it gives to their acts. Did you think that you might not get to the point of success after the show ? Calum Scott : Yes. I was just a normal guy, working in an office, typing emails and making coffees. Because I come from that sort of life and then suddenly, overnight, I was this golden buzzing guy and everybody wanted to take pictures with me and stuff. I think because it was such a quick change and during the final when Simon [Cowell] didn’t sign me to his record label, I kinda felt like maybe it was all over. I thought it was just a wild wind of excitement and then It was just going to blow over. For a couple of days I was a little bit depressed (laugh) and I thought that I’ve had this amazing experience and then I’m going to have to go back to the office and make cups of tea again, life is not fair (laugh). I worked really hard, I did a lot of festivals after the show and met my manager Luke in September 2015 and we put the

record out in march 2016 and it just done so well, it completely changed my life but I had to work hard for it. I couldn’t just let everything happen, we had to pick the time to put the single out, we had to work hard on what we are going to do and how we are going to move forward because I want this to be my career for the rest of my life. I don’t want to go back to the office, don’t send me back (laugh).

«I would love to work with Calvin Harris. He’s got that view on music when it just makes sense» OTM Mag : You are nominated for a Brit Award this year, congratulations! How do you feel about that ? Calum Scott : Thank you so much ! It makes me feel amazing just to know that I’ve got that sort of recognition. It just takes my career to another level and performing on the Brits nomination launch party on TV the other night was really special but to be nominated …it’s just mind blowing. My mom has shed enough tears for the both of us (laugh). I didn’t tell her, I brought her to the nomination party so she found out with everybody and she was like « what ? » and I was like « yes sorry I’ve kept this from you » (laugh) It was hard keeping that from everybody, I found out one week before so I just had to kind of forget about it, it was very hard. I’m looking forward to the Brits now.

OTM Mag : You released your new single « Rhythm Inside » what is this about ? Calum Scott : « Rhythm Inside » is my very first original song which means the world to me. « Dancing On My Own » is very special to me and will always have a special place in my heart but releasing my new original music is the most important thing. « Rhythm Inside » is the opposite of « Dancing On My Own ». « Dancing On My Own » is very much about being the one on the side, kind of watch a relationship unfold and desperately wanting to be in a relationship with that person. « Rhythm Inside » is very much about you being in that position and feeling those feelings that you get when you see that person. They might be the love of your life, they might just have caught your eyes… that glance from across the room and those butterflies and fire happening in your body, that’s the kind of stuff I wanted to bring out in the song and in the music video which is out now. It captures the lyrics of the song very well about those best emotions and feelings. It’s nice to see something happy and hopeful. I’m looking forward to performing it now. OTM Mag : Do you have some features on your upcoming album ? Calum Scott : I don’t have necessarily any duets but I have collaborated with other artists and songwriters. I’ve written with John Newman, Kodaline. I’ve written with incredible songwriters that have been part of Adele’s albums, Sam Smith’s album and I have an incredible producer for the album called Fraser T.Smith who is an absolutely dream to work with, he has worked with the best. He did live work with Craig David, he wrote « Set Fire To The Rain » with Adele, he wrote songs with Sam, just incredible people. I definitely worked with incredible names but I think in terms of feature, I’d see a single with somebody like Rudimental, Jonas Blue or Calvin Harris but that would be for the album 2.

I’m talking about album 2 now, crazy (laugh) one album at a time but there might be a feature in the making as well, but I can’t say too much. I will tell you guys very soon I promise, next time we see each other (laugh) Words by PAM CHARBIT Photos by DAMIEN PAILLARD

OUR BEST ALBUMS

OF JANUARY For this first issue of On The Move Magazine, we got to meet some amazing artists who talked to us about their careers and work with humility and passion. But, in the meantime, every week, a bunch of records were thrown into the world, portraying the singular influences, universe and sound of every artist involved. So, we opened our ears and dived into what matters most : music ! Here are our favourite albums for this month.

The boys are finally back after 3 years and it’s as good as it gets ! You Me At Six is one of those bands that has offered a different sound with almost every album they released but this one will sound familiar, no worries ! Even though the first single “Night People” was given a mixed reception, the rest of the tracks reminds us why we love this band : heady riffs, heavy guitar solos and Josh Franceschi’s powerful voice are the perfect combo for a successful fifth album. This album is definitely heavier and more mature with some newly introduced sounds but the quintet didn’t leave behind the beautiful and emotional ballads as in “Give” or “Take on the World” which makes you want to leave everything behind and just flee with Franceschi as he sings the words.

Top 3 tracks : Make Your Move, Swear, Take on the World

Night People – You Me At Six The XX have chosen the path of a natural metamorphosis for their third album “I See You”, one of the most anticipated albums of 2017. The British indie-pop trio left its dark atmosphere to head for a much lighter soundscape. The production is clear, poetic and positive, gracefully accompanied by the legendary synthesizers and light basslines. The voice of Romy Croft and that of Oliver Sim still harmonize perfectly, which sometimes shows that the hovering side of The XX is still there. The trio unfolds all its melodic potential and even explore some sounds that can confuse at first: they left their comfort zone to cross a much larger horizon and it works.

Top 3 tracks : A Violent Noise, Brave For You, On Hold

I SEE YOU - THE XX If you don’t know the Japanese band One OK Rock, prepare yourself because they are going to take over the world ! Combining heavy riffs and acoustic guitars, Taka, Tomoya, Ryota and Toru deliver a rich soundscape and even explore different nuances with “Ambitions”, their eighth album. That’s right, eight albums ! This time you can expect punchy, catchy, bold but also emotional tracks. And their effortless energy is not growing weaker throughout the whole record ! The band’s collaborations with 5 Seconds of Summer and Alex Gaskarth from All Time Low, are neatly produced and highlight their own musical universe. One thing is for sure : some of those tracks will be in your favorite playlists !

Top 3 tracks : Bombs Away, We Are, Bedroom Warfare

Ambitions – One OK Rock

Killer Mike and El-P couldn’t wait anymore and digitally released their third album around Christmas… for free! The perfect gift, right ? The American duo released the physical copy this month and we can say that it’s absolutely awesome. Old-school hip-hop and perfect flow are Run The Jewels’ successful recipe. The insane beats make you nod like crazy, and next thing you know you are wandering the streets of the Bronx. The songs come one after another so naturally that it seems they are only one. Run The Jewels just reinvented American hip-hop and delivered a fresh and diversified record : and we got an earful !

Top 3 tracks : Talk to me, Legend has it, Stay Gold

RTJ3 – Run The Jewels

Introduced by the short film «Silhouettes - Trilogy», Aquilo’s debut album combine their personal stories, the environment around the duo and the best of the previous four EPs. Emotionally charged, the 14 tracks are beautifully highlighted by Tom’s voice and Ben’s piano and are a perfect mix of what the duo is capable of. Halfway through the listen, you’ll find yourself dancing to «Complication» and you’ll probably shed a tear to the perfect «Silhouette». A promising first album for the british duo which announces a bright future !

Top 3 tracks : Silhouette, Almost Over, Low Light

Silhouettes – Aquilo

The 21-year-old R&B singer Kehlani finally unveiled her highly anticipated album SweetSexySavage last month. This compelling new project shows a new touching but fierce side of the songstress’ personality. Her songs are blunt, unflinching and exuberant, bringing some old R&B vibes back to life. Kehlani’s soft and conversational voice create an up close and personal relation, giving her a «girl next door» kind of charm. The singer paired with producers Pop & Oak, known for providing great work for Miguel and Tory Lanez, to create the album which will help her make a name for herself. While she showcases her desire to be accepted for who she is, Kehlani has this sassy attitude and desire to push boundaries. SweetSexySavage was definitely the R&B album you didn’t know you needed to start this new year.

Top 3 tracks : Keep On, CRZY, Too Much

SweetSexySavage – Kehlani «All These Countless Night» is the fourth studio album by british alt-band Deaf Havana. Tied together by mirroring sound, the album features some dynamic songs that easily catch your attention and some solid single like «Trigger». Reaching a definitive sound, Deaf Havana is not a band that can be accused of focusing on one type of music : while «Seattle» and «‘St Paul» are emotionnaly charged, «Fever» immediatly stimulates emotion. Musical evolution might be a difficult balance for any group, but when it comes to Deaf Havana, they never loose touch with what made them great at the beginning.

Top 3 tracks : Seattle, St Paul, Fever

ALL THESE COUNTLESS NIGHTS - DEAF HAVANA Keeping his promise of releasing the first wave of songs from his forthcoming album «The Search Of Everything», John Mayer dropped four tracks from the collection in a EP called «Wave One». It may seems early but it seems that the album is going to be more varied than his recent albums : while «You’re Gonna Live Forever in Me.” is bluesy and effortless, «Changing» opens with a piano solo and John’s vocals before an acoustic guitar and the full band join it. Sure thing, the first wave is solid start and promise for the new album.

Top 3 tracks : Love on The Weekend, Changing, You’re Gonna Live Forever In Me

LIL DICKY Don’t expect Lil Dicky to be your usual rapper. Mixing comedy and rap with a flow that will overshadow a lot of big names, Lil Dicky managed to build a solid fanbase by himself. With his 2015 self-released debut album «Professional Rapper» and certified platinum in the US, David Burd showed that passion, hard work mixed with talent can push boundaries. In fact, this album didn’t need any major record label’s support. His following on Youtube who discovered him thanks to his first video «Ex-Boyfriend» did the job. Lil Dicky is another kind of artist, the kind you encounter and you don’t forget. Pay attention, take him seriously and get to know the man.

29

OTM Mag : On your debut album «Professional Rapper» you mixed jokes, funny lyrics with rap. Is it a way for you to stand up from the crowd and difference yourself from the other rappers out there ? Lil Dicky : I think that’s something I’m aware of, I wouldn’t say it’s my main driver, I definitely use it to my advantage but it’s kinda like who I am. If you hang out with me for a day I’ll be trying to make you laugh the entire time. OTM Mag : Why did you choose this technic of comedy + rap ? Lil Dicky : I thought that being honest is easier to get noticed like I thought acting and stand-up comedy roles are so brutal but this mixed with music is a easier way to self promote. Comedyrap is kind of an unique thing so instead of competing against all of the comedians who are into acting, I’m competing against what - the three people out there who are comedy-rapping ? OTM Mag : What does rap mean to you ? Lil Dicky : it means for - as a fan - it’s by far my favorite genre. It’s like the soundtrack of my life. But to me it means a lot because it’s giving my voice, it’s how I express myself. Without that I don’t think I would have been able to get my point of view across. OTM Mag : Who are you favorite rappers ? Lil Dicky : Drake, Kendrick, J.Cole, Kanye, Jay-Z. They are big for a reason, they are the best !

OTM Mag : Your music video « Ex Boyfriend » has hit 1 million views in one day, did you expect that ? Lil Dicky : I didn’t expect that (laugh) especially not the first day ! I hoped it would though. I thought it would succeed but I was like who knows - it’s the internet - I’ve got nothing online but I was like who knows. I was very surprised but so happy.

« Without rap, i wouldn’t have been able to get my point of view across » OTM Mag : Before this you were working in an advertising agency, why did you decide to put that first « Ex-Boyfriend » video online ? Lil Dicky : Advertising was cool but I wasn’t living my dream. It was as un-boring as a regular job could be but living your dream and doing what you are meant to do … no not all. So I just wanted to pursuit my dream and be a comedian. OTM Mag : Do you consider yourself as a comedian first or as a rapper first ? Lil Dicky : I guess right now rapper first but I think I’m a comedian at heart. I think it’s my natural human being like if you ask me who’s David’s human being I’d say it’s more comedian than rapper, but if someone asks me what I do for a living I’d always say rapper, i wouldn’t say comedian and rapper, just say rapper. And I think in five years if you ask me what I do for a living I think I’ll have enough stuff in the comedy world that’s not rap related and I’ll be able to say comedian and rapper.

OTM Mag : If you have an opportunity to do something comedy related, to play in a movie or something, would you do it or do you prefer to stick to music for now ? Lil Dicky : If I really believe in it then yes. I want my career to be half music and half comedy acting. OTM Mag : How do you difference David from the character you created ? Lil Dicky : Lil Dicky wouldn’t never say something that David didn’t believe in. I believe in the art of the joke. Every time I say something ridiculous it’s simply to make people laugh. Even if it’s offensive, I believe that if it’s capable of making someone laugh, it’s art. I think Lil Dicky is a « I don’t give a fuck » and more extreme version of me.

OTM Mag : In this song you say : « I want to do things differently » what do you mean by that ? Lil Dicky : I think in rap you see a lot of similar stuffs sometimes and I just offer a different perspective and a different way of executing. I do view music as an entertainment sometimes and I think I have a different approach. You don’t really see other people doing what I’m doing so it’s what I meant. OTM Mag : And you prefer doing everything differently ? Lil Dicky : Yes, I mean my goal is not going against what’s out there, but I just want to be myself.

OTM Mag : The song and the video you created for «Professional Rapper» with Snoop Dogg is basically a « job interview ». Is it also a way for you to introduce your music and yourself to the world out there ? Lil Dicky : Yes, and that’s why I made It the first song of the album. I wanted it to be like the intro, everybody’s first impression of me. It can be confusing, like you see it’s funny and you wonder what it is. But I think that video and that song really explain what I’m intend on doing. OTM Mag : Are you involved in the creating process of your music videos ? Lil Dicky : Yes, I’m really hands on these videos.

31

OTM Mag : You collaborated with different kinds of artists from Snoop Dogg and T-pain to Brendon Urie from Panic At The Disco. How did you choose those collaborations ? Lil Dicky : For example, the song « Save dat money ». It’s about saving money, I thought about having a rapper on it that typically raps about spending money like Rich Homie Quan. His name is Rich Homie, he’s the perfect fit because he’s the opposite of what you would expect. Then I’m thinking about who’s the best guy for a hook, who sounds better than Fetty Wap, nobody, so you have a list of ideas. For « professional rapper » I had the idea of having an O.G, a really respected rapper interviewing me, and you start thinking who’s the best option than Snoop Dogg. No one. So you start making a list of the people you’d like to approach.

OTM Mag : Do you prefer recording or touring ? Lil Dicky : Definitely recording. When I’m on tour it feels really fake, it’s not my real life. You don’t evolve as a person, you don’t establish relationships, it’s cool it’s fulfilling in a different way. It’s great to see the fans but I don’t need validation from a personal standpoint, I don’t need to feel that to be a satisfied human being, I need to make art to feel satisfied. It’s definitely cool, but if you’re asking me if I’d rather do that for 10 months a year or 2 months a year and living in LA and meet my wife and start an actual life, I’d rather do that. I value my quality of life I’ll never be like Katy Perry touring the globe, always. I’ll never gonna do that. No matter the level of success, it’s not worth it to me, I need my own life. I’m also really bad at writing and creating on tour.

OTM Mag : Who would you like to collaborate with now ?

OTM Mag : If you could describe your music in three words ?

Lil Dicky : Kanye, Kendrick, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Bieber. I do like Bieber. Chance The Rapper. Young Thug, Future. There are so many of them. I also need to do a song with John Mayer. He’s so sick.

Lil Dicky : Real, funny and lyrical.

OTM Mag : Now you reached success with your first album, what’s your next goal ?

Words by PAM CHARBIT Photos : ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

Lil Dicky : I’d say my next immediate goal is to make a hit. When I say a hit I mean, «Save Dat Money» was kind of a hit, but I mean « Thrift Shop » is a hit. I want to make a number one. I think I’m a song away from being known by everybody. I want to achieve that. The bigger you get, the more access you get. What I’m trying to do musically does require other people. I mean, I like collaborating with people. I don’t think anybody get Ed Sheeran and Rick Ross on a same song, stuff like that. Funny things.

MUSICAL MARKETING : When technology mingles...

Ed Sheeran, Bastille, Troye Sivan... : How do artists use Internet and social media to get close to their public in an innovative way ?

No need to say that, in terms of promotion, the music industry already understands that she cannot avoid the power and potential of social media. A lot of platforms, with different formats and ambitions, allow musicians to bring together a maximum community, by simply promoting their professional work or by talking publicly about their daily life and intimate sphere. No matter how it is used, the Internet revolution shattered any images vehiculed by glazed paper... Our team at OTM Mag wants to go further than just presenting current musical news to bring you behind the curtains... Together, we’ll analyse and understand marketing processes which, for the last few months, really started to change the experiences and relations between public and entertainers.

35

An instantaneous window to the world With the rise of social media, some intermediaries between those who transmit and receive informations went obsolete. Social media offers artists an intantaneous and powerful window to the whole world. Communication is direct, causing a transformation in the role of journalists, for instance. When journalists were, a few years ago, masters of information, privilegied by the exclusivity of press conferences, files or interviews, they are now sharing the exact same position as the audience. They often have to wait, hastily, for informations to be delivered on social media before treating them. They still have a great position in diffusing and decoding news, as they know how to, but their privilegied position in the industry tends to fade away when any internet user can go see for themselves what’s up in their favourite artist’s world, going onto accounts that are often certified and run by the performers themselves, or their team.

In September 2016, Canadian The Weeknd deleted all previous posts from his Instagram account...

That’s how, last September, canadian singer, songwriter and producer the Weeknd orchestrated a blowing return to the stage by, first, going blank on Instagram ! With a total rebranding (including the disappearing of his iconic dreadlocks), The Weeknd started a new phase of his career. The rest is history as his third album « Starboy » - including collaborations with Lana Del Rey, Daft Punk, Future et Kendrick Lamar – was very well received by public and critics, going straight to number 1 on Billboard 200 and signing the third best US first-week of sales for 2016. In this case, social media got total exclusivity of his awaited return, which had press and fans talk a lot. Journalists had no other choices but to wait and receive news from the singer, at the exact same time his fandom did, and wonder about the same mysterious move... until The Weeknd deleted all doubts himself by publishing the artwork of his anticipated album. Simple but efficient ! ...before announcing a new era of his career, with the «Starboy» album.

A link reinforced between fans and artists As the hierarchy of actors for promotion in music is turned upside down, artists are getting closer to their fans, undoubtedly. Delays for information to spread are incredibly shortened and barriers between different languages easily overstepped. The mesure for such a phenomenon surely reaches maximum on the Twitter platform. When a message is posted (within 140 characters, please !), fans can answer, in real time, to their favourite artist. If lucky, they can get a « fav », « retweet » or an actual tweet in return. They are also able to interact with other fans on specific subjects and bring it to public attention, at different scales, thanks to the « Trending Topics ». That many actions put fans and artists -for the most active ones- in an uninterrumpted exchange and go against the past image of artists as unreachable figures. The artist becomes almost a friend, from which we can expect to receive a message any minute, like one of our relatives. The sense of being part of a community is also increased because it is possible to reunite, over one object of attention, hundreds or thousands of users, in unseen proportions. This kind of feeling of communion were previously reached only thanks to specific online forums -closed to the public eye- or, in a personified way, when entering a venue for a live experience. There, with only a few tweets, friendship can be made, groups of fans can be created and soon enough, find a name to identify themselves. Beliebers, directioners, selenators or swifties are now common names in the online language.

Then, at times, the right to speak is given to the fans, in the form of question sessions or an #Ask ! By using a specific hashtag, followers try their luck to « win » a personalized answer to their question, by a tweet or verbally in a livestream. Receiving such attention can be seen as a kind of reward or as a moment they’ll cherish, and is also a precious source of information and entertainment for the others taking part. Following such a path, the two young and super connected bands The Tide and New Hope Club – part of the same label created by their eldest The Vamps « Steady Records » - have developed their audience thanks to regular appointments with their fans, such as the #TideTuesday when they release videos, covers or announce anything related to their career and #ClubCam when they vlog their daily life.

From consumer to player From being an observer and consumer of data, the public becomes more and more of a player in the promotion campaign of an artist. While the audience is always more eager to have an intimate and instantaneous relation to the artist, why not take the most of this dynamic to increase visibility ? And the british prodigy Ed Sheeran understood it well, when he joined forces with Snapchat to announce the release of his new single. After retiring from the stage for exactly one year, orchestrating his break on social media too, Ed Sheeran announced, on December 13th, that he was back on track. The musician made several small announcements to gradually unveil his new graphic identity (after orange for « Plus» and green for «Muliply », a happy blue) and the name of his upcoming album : « Divide », set to be released on March 3rd.

Austin Corini, member of american band The Tide, invites his fans via Twitter to join a live Q&A.

Above : Pop sensation Shawn Mendes, using Ed Sheeran's «Shape Of You» filter on Snapchat (January 2017) / Below : Fan having fun with Sage The Gemini's virtual glasses, promoting «Now Or Later» (November 2016).

But his best move was to offer to the world, on January 5th, a couple of hours before releasing not one but two new singles, a Snapchat filter letting users hear the unknow « Shape Of You » during a good 30 seconds. Using the social app, the british artist takes place in the habits of millions of users which discover, right after their favourite filters, the one with blue glasses. Also, it is a wonderful opportunity for him to draw the attention of potential new fans, who never searched to listen to his music, though his name is difficult to ignore. Then, every user will send a photograph of them, wearing the virtual accessory, to their friends, which will use the filters as well... and the diffusion is exponential ! Other than creating a surprise effect as The Weeknd did, Ed Sheeran teased a new song before going with a double move in releasing two, for which the world was on watch... And we bet that this trick was in his favour and played a great part in the success of « Shape Of You » and « Castle On The Hill », which break several records. Both songs reached 6 to 7 millions of streams in their first day of publication, blowing up One Direction’s numbers with their 4,8 millions streams on the first day of « Drag Me Down » in 2015. Also, Ed Sheeran was the first artist to ever top the UK charts simultaneously at number 1 and 2. Since, the numbers are just outpassing other records -of sales or streams- held by Adele or Drake, week after week. Yet, Ed Sheeran didn’t invent the process. A few weeks before him, the american songwriter, producer and rapper Sage The Gemini already associated one of his sound, the upbeat « Now Or Later », to a filter in the famous app with a little ghost. Choosing one with virtual multicolor glasses, users were able to listen to the song for a few seconds. Without creating a buzz such as Sheeran’s one, it clearly helped promote the song and make her win a few great spots on Itunes’ top. As a visionary, Sage The Gemini already teamed up with Vine to promote the songs « Gas Pedal » and « Red Nose » in 2013. May they be extremely famous or a little more confidential, artists nowadays admit willingly that the public himself play a great role in promoting their work. Thus, what appears to be a game for fans becomes a marketing machine, with a potential to get carried away like no other.

Bastille pop-up store : a powerful tool to give life to the universe of their 2nd album «Wild World», photography by Gregory Nolan.

From virtual to reality Some go even further and use social media to offer brand new experiences to the fans, in real life. There, limits between virtual and reality become blurry and unsettling... To illustrate this statement, the communication campaign organized by the british quatuor Bastille for the release of their second album « Wild World » is one to look up to ! Before teasing the name of their new album « Wild World » with several enigmatic videos or images, the group presented to the world the acronym WWCOMMS, together with a logo - triple triangle intertwined – like a mutation of their original emblem. From there, every action coming from their communication strategy was made under the label of WWCOMMS or « Wild World Communications ». The genius move from Bastille was to give substance to their promotion project, in form of an agency, to use it as an effective marketing tool and a singular

aesthetic, in which have been drowned every elements linked to the new record, as for a new page of their career. From their graphic identity to their videos, including also their merchandising and the stage design of their tour (with every show opened and closed by a disturbing despot), WWCOMMS is everywhere. British NME Magazine talked about the band in those terms, summaring their project : « They’re one of those bands that creates a universe around them; one that’s so meticulously thought out and built up that it feels like you’ve stepped into their own bubble of alternative reality. » The universe of Wild World Communications, with a vibrant and dystopian look, took place in the website of the band, as well as their newsletter, and in the Messenger app, linked to Facebook, which allowed the fans to be aware of every news of Bastille. The public could also convers with the chat-bot itself about the band.

39

The public, already personnaly involved in the « Wild World » journey, have also been included physically. Indeed, the fans were invited, via Snapchat, to unveil, track after track, the « Wild World » tracklist, activating geofilters in different cities around the world. Then, it was up to the fans to be clearsighted, fast and have a good orientation ! With the same logic, on certain dates of their european tour « Wild Wild World Tour » at the end of 2016, the four musicians have liven up the long wait of their fans with a game via Instagram, where they published clues about where to find hidden gift packs around the venues : a true reasure hunt began every time ! But the WWCOMMS adventure problably had its climax when the band organized three free access pop-up stores (ephemeral physical place designed around a particular project) in London, Los Angeles and New York in September 2016. In a chaotic setting mixing up futuristic elements and techonologic drifts, Dan Smith, Will Farquarson, Kyle Simmons, Chris Wood and several members of their team took part as actors and gave life to the WWCOMMS organization, absorbing their fans in the universe depicting by lyrics and sonorities of « Wild World ». The four musicians also build up with Spotify a collaborative project named « Eye Of the Stormers », which generates a virtual storms on an online map every time a track from the album is streamed in the world. A way to always connect a bit more with their fans accross the globe and bringing them together as one ! Then, the creativity of the members of Bastille, their sensibility toward differents artistic fields and their numerous influences taken from pop culture have crystallized in a unique -and varied- experience, online and in real, in which fans were highlighted. Doing this to promote an album from which certain tracks are a barely-concealed critic towards our current political and media system was quite a bold but brilliant move !

The previous examples are just part of the most recent and more notable marketing campaigns launched by artists from different horizons these last months. It would be quite impossible to bring together in an exhaustive way every actions. They’re numerous, more and more innovative and come from well-known entertainers – helped by expert and multidisciplinary teams- as well as rising stars whose creativity can be even more increased. When young pop prodigy Troye Sivan invited his fans to go and look for hidden VHS of one of his videos in multiple cities in the world, the pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi let his fans literally imagine what would be the melody of his single « Night », during 24 hours before releasing the actual song. We’ve also seen british trio Years And Years letting the public take full control of the aesthetic of one of their music videos, broadcast live on TV, in the #ShineTakeControl campaign or Tove Lo giving her fans from more than 160 different countries the chance to watch together the « Timebomb » video with a special webcam service. The luckiest could stumble upon the singer herself on the video feed ! Then, all artists compete with each other to find the best idea, and the best partnership, to distinguish themselves. But, with the crazy race for progress and the speed for ideas to spread, an infinity of possible strategies is opening before our eyes and we love to think that some of our favourite musical figures will continue to work to add more « social » to their « media ». In any case, one thing is sure : your favourite artist will not stop to surprise you !

WHAT’S UP

IN FRANCE ?

Words by LENAELLE FONTAINE and CORALINE BLAISE

BENJAMIN SIKSOU IS BACK ! GEORGIO GIVES A NEW BREATH TO RAP MUSIC

At only 29, Benjamin Siksou is one of a kind. Discovered in 2008 through the french version of The xFactor named «Nouvelle Star» Benjamin never gave up on his dream and quickly conquered the french public with his angelic attitude and his soulful voice. When he sings, you can guess pretty quickly that he grew up listening to jazz and blues music. More than just a performer, Benjamin Siksou is more than ready to offer to the world his music : forgotten ideas, personal stories and isolated beats, the singer finds his inspiration in his everyday life. Up on stage before bringing out an album, he played guitar and sang before releasing an EP mixing english and french songs. Flirting with the cinema, he played in several movies alongside other famous french actors, a small break in his career before definitely going back to his first love : his music. His first album, named «Au Chant Du Coq» is set to be one of the most anticipated album of the year. Benjamin wrote almost every song in it : the first single «Tombé du Camion» is a fresh pop song, based on a bouncing melody which makes you want to clap your hands and hum along. Recorded in the Netherlands, the album has its own identity and sound. «I’ve been waiting for 29 years to release my first album mainly because it took me a while to understand that an artist is represented by his songs. I had to build my own universe and sound before bringing out my debut record.» Neither predictable nor conventional, Benjamin Siksou is a complex artist : he has his doubts in the morning and is confident about his music in the afternoon. He knows how to say no and knows exactly what he wants for his record. «Au Chant Du Coq» by Benjamin Siskou will be avaible in April 2017.

At only 23, Georgio, whose real name is George, is an atypical rapper. Neither provocative, nor bling-bling, the young artist was born in Paris and found his passion for music while listening to The Last Shadow Puppets, Leonard Cohen and Dicidens. With a first self-produced album "Bleu Noir" released in 2015, Georgio conquered and seduced by his energy and melancholy. If "Bleu Noir" was dark and clearly cathartic, his new album "Hera" is more open. This time, even if the darkness is an obvious feature of Georgio’s style, there's one big difference in this record : there's hope and desire to more forward. Strong, poetic and powerful, Georgio signed here a record that draws your attention from the first notes. The rapper will be playing at l’Olympia on March 24th 2017 in Paris. The show is already sold out and the new prince of French rap is ready to take over the French capital!

God Save Christine & The Queens SAVE THE DATE FOR #LOLLAPARIS ! It’s the news that shaked the world of festivals these past months... The iconic roaming american festival Lollapalooza chose its next home-city and it is the french capital Paris !

Here’s one french girl who dares to be different : Between Heloise Letissier, the person she is when she walks down the street and the person she becomes onstage -Christine there’s definitely a huge difference. Inspired by a group of drag queens she met at a club in London, she created the alter ego she now performs as : Christine & The Queens. «I was kind of lost in every way and trapped as well. I wanted to break free and i was tired of apologizing all the time, so I created a character that could be daring for me.». And then a phenomenon was born. Back home, the singer is already a huge deal as she spent the last two years on top of the charts with her debut album «Chaleur Humaine». Known for her impressive choreographies and performances, she won over the british crowd and became big in the UK when she brought out a translated version of her album and her firt single «Titled». Her sound may be filled with electro-pop and distinctive vocals but what really sets her appart is definitely her dance style which mix vogguing with some Michael Jackson’s inspired moves : «I call it a project more than an album because for me everything –the dancing, the performance, and the music – is linked.» Following David Guetta or even Daft Punk’s success, Christine is set to become one of the first french artists to make waves in the US as she was recently nominated for a Grammy award in the pop category and a Brit Award. Up against Beyoncé, Sia and Rihanna, Héloise already made waves by performing her lead single «Titled» on live tv. The UK loves Christine & The Queens as much as France does and it seems that the singer has her chances to bring the award home since her album ranked among the top 40 of the best selling albums of the year. A record for a foreign singer, not to mention that she received the support of Elton John ! You heard it first, 2017 is going to be radiant for Christine & The Queens.

Originally settled in Chicago, Lollapalooza has spread its magic all over the world now, with events in Santiago-Chili since 2011, São Paulo-Brasil in 2012, Buenos Aires-Argentina since 2014 et in Berlin-Germany since 2015. Now, its time for the french audience to enjoy the colourful and energic atmosphere of Lollapalooza, in July 22nd and 23rd at l’Hippodrome de Longchamp ! We’ll be able to hear Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Weeknd live as headliners, as well as Imagine Dragons, Lana Del Rey, the Pixies or british London Grammar and Alt-J. In terms of french artists, DJ Snake, Martin Solveig, La Femme or IAM will be there ! We’ll also (re)discover some of the revelations of the past few months such as LP, icelandic band Kaleo or EDM prince Alan Walker. We’re also looking forward to seeing Milky Chance, Tom Odell, Oscar And The Wolf or Don Broco perform ! More than 120000 people are expected in the area where 4 different scenes will allow them to enjoy awesome live experiences, as well as exhibits, artistic performances, gastronomy or spaces for children to play. Tickets are already selling : 79 euros for a day and 149 euros for two. Prepare your credit card and your best festival-goers accessory, you’re not gonna want to miss this !

ARE THEY WORTH

SEEING LIVE ?

Words by CORALINE BLAISE and PAM CHARBIT

One band to burn down a stage is certainly The Neighbourhood ! In March 2016, we saw them performing at la Cigale in Paris and that’s what we call one hell of a show !

Then, The Neighbourhood took the stage by storm with singer Jesse Rutherford wearing a t-shirt saying « I LOVE PARIS », together with a glitter jacket and matched glasses, testifying for his now famous rock/glam style.

Formed in 2011, californian alternative-rock band The Neighbourhood keep gathering together a growing community of fans. With two albums, the last named «Wiped Out» was out on October 2015, Jesse Rutherford, Jeremy Freedman, Zach Abels, Mikey Margott and Brandon Fried are now used to play in sold out venues, in a lot of different countries. They already sold out la Flèche d’Or, before we were lucky enough to see them again in the french capital at la Cigale.

With a show of 1h15, the band offered live versions of songs coming from their two albums in a well-balanced set, approved by a screaming and singing crowd. We could hear « Afraid » or « Cry Baby », their hit « Sweater Weather », « Daddy Issues », « The Beach », « Let It Go » and the unforgettable « R.I.P 2 My Youth ».

Before the awaited band arrived on stage, another sensation, the indie-rock band MOTHXR formed in New-York and lead by Penn Badgley, warmed up the crowd. The quatuor played several tracks from «Centerfold», their experimental debut album unveiled in February 2016. The public was instantaneously seduced by their suave melodies and dreamlike universe. No need to say that MOTHXR are on their way to become one of those indie-rock bands that can’t be ignored.

With nearly mass hysteria when Jesse touched hands in the crowd, lots of «je t’aime» coming from every direction, a trumbling floor and an explosive gig, The Neighbourhood delivered a live experience that they and we will surely remember !

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

TWENTY ONE PILOTS Last November, american duo Twenty One Pilots ended his european tour «The Emotional RoadShow World Tour » with a gig in Paris. Thanks to the incredible success of their fourth album «Blurryface», out since 2015, Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun are carrying on multiple tours around the world, as well as winning different awards and seeing their tracks become hits, one after the other. The band, coming from Columbus - Ohio, was the one we bet on 2015 as our designated «success story» and we were thrilled to see them coming back in Paris, at le Zénith, for a sold out show, one year after a great debut at Le Trabendo and a few month after a burning show at Le Trianon. Paris loves Twenty One Pilots, and on November 17th, 2016, they gave all the love back to us ! With two different stages and a nearly 2 hours long show, the duo deserves, with no doubt, to be labelled as one of the best live performers these days. The band made a spectaculary entry on « Heavydirtysoul » and didn’t stop for a second after that. We were lucky enough to hear tracks from the last album such as « Polarize », « The Judge », « Lane Boy », « Stressed Out » or « Ride », « Hometown », « Tear In My Heart » and « We Don’t Believe What’s On TV ». The public knew them all by heart. Tyler Joseph, with never ending energy, jumped up and down during the whole set and switched instruments, such as piano, guitar and ukulele, with a mindblowing ability. For our great pleasure, the performer also sang his own enchanting version of Elvis Presley « Can’t Help Falling In Love » in front of a seduced crowd.

The band, largely promoting their latest production, also did not forget their oldest records. We did enjoy « Migraine », « Ode To Sleep », « Trees », « Guns For Hands », or « Goner » with a non-hidden pleasure. As fans were already aware of, thanks to online videos, Tyler Joseph performed the end of « Car Radio » at the top of a quite high ladder, leaving the public bewildered ! The members of Twenty One Pilots have an equal talent for composing and for performing. Visual design and change of costumes were remarquable (hands down to their team) but everything was also done to offer an unforgettable experience to the fans. We found Tyler Joseph literally rolling over the public in a giant plastic ball or Josh Dun doing crazy back flips and playing drums on a platform supported by the crowd. One of the highlights of the show were the few songs performed on the second stage, in the middle of the crowd, where drums and a piano could be found. There, they offered us a mash-up of « The Pantaloon / Fall Away / Johnny Boy / Forest / Addict with a Pen / March to the Sea / Kitchen Sink » with the fans screaming every lyric. The band even performed - for the first time in Paris - their song «Heathens», part of the Suicide Squad movie soundtrack ! When we got the chance to meet the band at the early days of their career, they told us live gigs were their most favourite part of a music career. And, for this show in Paris, this statement made a lot of sense ! Parisian fans were lucky enough to experiment a live session, as we rarely see one : energic, passionate and federating ! All the people in this venue certainly felt like one and we thank the band for such a great feeling. Long live Twenty One Pilots !

OTM TEAM PAM I spend most of my time apologizing to my favorite streaming platform for ripping off their «add to playlist» button. When i’m not looking for new artists to talk to you about I drown myself in a sea containing a mix of old R&B and punk-rock sound. Sometimes I go to concert venues more often than I go to bed and I listen to music even when I sleep. I’ll be probably deaf in 40 years but knowing you’ll discover new artists through this mag makes everything worthwhile.

ELODIE Longtime writer for OTM, I love being able to talk about my favourite tracks and artists online. Got a passion for rock bands, Harry Potter and photography. Spending way too much money on travels and gigs. But, we only got one life, better get the most out of it !

CORALINE Wannabe architect, musical writer by passion. I am in love with matter, music and words. Drunk with british indie-rock and popfolk. I guess my wildest dream would be designing and building a gig venue, for which I would decide the opening line-up. In the meantime, I am the curly girl with too much hair, front row.

LUDIVINE Who am I, in a nutshell? Daydreamer, traveler at heart, sees beauty in everything, concert addict, Germany lover. Music is my escape route and my best friend. Fun fact: I actually own a guitar since I was 4 but I don’t know how to play. I am also the girl that’s like “Hey you gotta listen to this!” and 2 hours later we’re still on YouTube… Oops!

LENA Meet the youngest of the crew ! Aspiring music journalist and communication student, I spend most of my free time surrounded by books and hot chocolate. Basically obsessed with british pop music and indie artists, if you’re looking for me you’ll probably find me singing my heart out at a concert. if i could turn back time, i’d definitely pop to the Panic! At The Disco show in Chicago in 2006.
