In the current music industry where radios, TV and streaming are the big players deciding to spread the word about an artist (or not), it becomes more and more difficult for a lambda artist to get his music heard if he doesn’t fit some kind of criterias. It takes time, it takes patience, talent but above all it takes a lot of hard work. At On The Move Magazine, we give a particular attention to talent no matter where you come from, your musical genre, the amount of followers/views/fans you have got. We don’t talk quantity, we talk quality. We talk quality because we love music with the big M. We carefully choose the artists you’ll discover in this magazine to introduce you to «la crème de la crème». You’ll find big names, you’ll find unknown names. You’ll love what you’ll listen to, maybe you will hate it but at least, you’ll give our artists a chance. Because at the end of the day, every success story began with a chance given. ‘‘ Pamela Charbit, founder of On The Move

LIAM PAYNE Who has never heard of Liam Payne before? Being a part of the biggest boysband in the world for 7 years has its perks but the singer doesn’t take anything for granted. Now going solo just like the rest of the band, Liam embarks on a new journey and is ready to renew himself with pop-R&B and electro infused songs. After unveiling his debut single «Strip That Down» featuring Quavo, Liam collaborated with EDM superstar Zedd on «Get Low». Let’s have a chat with the man himself about his musical future.
7
On The Move Mag : Hi Liam ! Welcome back to Paris, we are happy to have you today. It’s been a while since the last time we saw you in France, isn’t it? Liam Payne : Hey On The Move ! Thank you for having me today in Paris on Bastille’s Day, what a time to be alive right? Thank you for the support over the years with the band and now with my music. I remember we played the Stade de France here, that was amazing. A great memory! On The Move Mag : You released your first song «Strip That Down» as a solo artist a couple of weeks ago. Were you anxious or stressed out of releasing it knowing it was your first solo production after 1D? Liam Payne : Hmm... Yes, it was a little bit of a stress. I think the most difficult part of being a solo artist is just to figure out who you are first. It’s the most important thing. I think about all of these legends : David Bowie, Sting, Robbie Williams. They are brilliant and they all knew who they wanted to be and they knew what the public thought about them as well. So it’s kind of based on who you want to be, who you are and who they think you are. I guess what I was stressed out about at the beginning was finding out what my sound is. I thought about what I listen to. I listen to rap music but obviously I’m not a rapper and I never will be one (laughs), but I like other things like R&B and pop like Justin Timberlake. His album «Justified» was amazing. I haven’t got enough experience yet to be able to draw something like «Justified» at the moment. It is a very honest album, I really like it. On The Move Mag : Talking about Justin Timberlake, I saw on the internet that a lot of people are comparing you to him after you released the «Strip That Down» song and music video. What do you think about it? Liam Payne : I think there will always be some comparisons. We both come from a boysband before starting solo and we are both kind of doing this pop/ R&B thing but it’s a great compliment for me. I mean, man, it’s an honor for me to be compared to such an incredible artist. On The Move Mag : You recently became a dad. Congratulations on your baby boy! Do you think your approach to music changed after becoming one? Liam Payne : Thank you so much, it’s the most amazing
thing ever! I haven’t actually experienced what it’s like to write as a dad yet to be honest with you, I was right on becoming a dad. I haven’t written many songs since he was born. I don’t think a lof of my fanbase are really parents, I think there are a lot of kids who listen to my music but I think it will definitely change my approach. I have something going on with Timbaland soon, and I was writing with Pharrell while his wife was pregnant at the same time as mine and they had triplets, that’s amazing! I definitely think it will change my approach because the more life experience you have, the more you got to write about it.
« the most difficult part of being a solo artist is to figure out who you are first » On The Move Mag : On «Strip That Down» you’ve got this lyric «I used to be in 1D, now I’m free». Are you happy to be able to release your own music or not having to keep this polished good boy image you and the rest of the band had? Liam Payne: I think a little bit of both. I think you’re becoming yourself in a sense of when you are in a band there is a certain character that you play around the people that you are with. That’s why it was a kind of freedom to be able to create different music. I did a lot of writing for the last couple of albums with One Direction. I listened to the first song that I wrote which was «Last First Kiss» on the second album and it was the first song where I was really involved in the writing process. If you listen to that song, the melodies are all R&B melodies. I’ve always been this kind of artist it was just that there were a lot of guitars and different things that the band needed, because we needed to create music for stadiums. You have huge rooms to fill so you have to think about that when you write a song. The process of writing for One Direction is totally different than the process of writing for my own stuff. It was easy to write for the band and I knew what I was doing. I think my second album, if I get the chance to go there, would definitely be easier because I know what my fanbase wants to hear, I know where I’m at and what works, you know. On The Move Mag : Did you try to reach another audience with this new sound of yours? Liam Payne : Yes, I mean a lot of people who like One
9
Direction’s music are different than the people who like this new music direction that I’m taking. Both are pop but not the same kind, you know what I mean. I know my song has been Shazamed a lot and was on the top of Shazam for a while and obviously people were like : «who’s this guy?». So obviously there are a few people who may be more interested in my music, or maybe more disinterested, I don’t know how it works but people are looking at it so that’s good, but I’m still very grateful to my fans who are here since the beginning, since I was a little kid with a dream (laughs). On The Move Mag : Is this first single a sneak peek of what your album will sound like? Liam Payne : A sneak peek of a portion I’d say. There are a lot of different places that I went to, I love dance music and I did a lot of remixes for the band or for my miss as well. So Dance Music has always been there and I’ve always had a dream of my song being played in a club. My PR actually messaged me last night saying she was dancing on «Get Low» in a club which is the thing I really wanted to so I was like YES! (laughs). I mean when the DJ puts «What Makes You Beautiful» you get a bit shy about it. It’s a different maturity, of course we were very young when we did that. I think it’s definitely a portion of the album and «Get Low» represents also some songs on the album, there will be some ballads on there about personal things. There’s a wonderful song that somebody wrote which is a very fantastic representation of a point in a relationship. It’s a very eclectic mix. On The Move Mag : So I guess you were really looking forward to Zedd releasing the song then? Liam Payne : OMG, we were both pushing our labels for things to go faster and for the song to be released earlier and earlier but there are different charts these days so you have to let your song to have its days. You have to find the right time to put those out. Of course I’d never claim to be the person who knows what all of these charts are about, I’m far too excited for this (laughs) but I have my team so I guess that’s good (laughs). Zedd had a lot of success lately, I mean «Stay» has been amazing. It’s a fantastic song and he’s an amazing musician. On The Move Mag : Would you like to work with other DJs/producers in the future? Liam Payne: Yes, Calvin Harris is the one I really would like to collaborate with. I’ve always loved Calvin Harris, I used to sing his songs before I was in the band,
when I used to be on my own. I’ve always wanted to work with him. I think he’s developing himself, he’s not just a DJ. I think he’s a musical genius. He’s stepping out of his comfort zone and it’s really working. I think «Feels» is a great song with great musicians on it, and Pharrell obviously who is amazing and a great person. On The Move Mag : Is your new album finished? Liam Payne : More or less. You find some different songs on it before people hear you. People have heard what I was about before. For instance, two years ago, Zedd said on a Swedish radio station that he wanted to work with me, which is very cool. Now it’s kind of happening, a lot of different people are popping up. I am going to work with Timbaland in a few weeks which is a dream come true. Obviously, he has been involved in a lot of songs that I love so I’m hoping I’ll create good stuff with him.
« I have something going on with Timbaland soon » On The Move Mag : We saw Charlie Puth recently and he told us you have a song with him coming up. Can you tell us more about it? Liam Payne : I’d call Charlie one of the closest friends that I have in the music industry. When he’s going through something, he would call me and talk to me about it. He’s a little bit older than I am but we get along very well. I don’t have many friends in the industry, I’m not making a lot of famous friends. I just like to hang around people and say hello but Charlie is one of the people that I consider as a great friend. I got to his house and had a chat with him and spent the night and had a laugh. He’s a good boy, he is the one person that I worked with who has the most musical potential. I think Pharrell is already Pharrell, people knows who he is. People don’t understand yet that Charlie is so much more than the musician that people see on the outside. Before I met him I had no idea but he’s a musical genius. The song that we have is like a representation of an old track. We’re trying to figure out how that works but I can’t make any promises because it’s a difficult industry, and there are a lot of music coming out. I love being in competition with all of these fantastic people around because it makes you work harder. Like Bruno Mars, no one else does what he does. The song Charlie wrote for me is just amazing, this is gonna be my next single and wait until you see the music video. The video is going to be incredible... it’s not about me ... which is funny (laughs). You’ll see...
11
On The Move Mag : Do you know when it will be out? Liam Payne : Not yet. I still need to let «Get Low» have its time and let people enjoy it as much as I do. It’s going very well at the moment which is great but I can’t wait to perform that song, I’m really excited but it’s not gonna be too long.
On The Move Mag : What would you think about collaborating with your former bandmates? Liam Payne: That would be amazing! We have to find the right song but we already know our voices are good together, we know it works (laughs). I’m open to this idea, I think it would be great!
On The Move Mag : Do you have a dream collaboration?
On The Move Mag : How does your writing process as a solo artist differ from when you were in the band?
Liam Payne : I just thought about it and I really would like to work with Bruno Mars. His ballads are incredible, «When I Was Your Man» is just amazing. He puts out what he wants to put out and it works. I mean, look at his first record «Just The Way You Are», and look at the transition from this song to where he is now. When you really believe in yourself as a solo artist and you really love the music you put out then... bang! (laughs)
Liam Payne : It’s a different process, I’d definitely say that. You need to write from personal experience or you get to sing something that has been written from someone else’s personal experience. It’s all about the people you get to work with. I’ve been very accepted by the musical community from Ed Sheeran to Ryan Tedder, Pharrell Williams, to Timbaland, even Charlie and Zedd. I hate to say so many names but they are all fantastic musicians and for some reason they wanted to work with me and it’s great, I’m super happy about it. On The Move Mag : How do you feel about performing all by yourself now? Liam Payne : It’s not scary because I was used to it even before the band. I love it! On The Move Mag : Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Liam Payne : I don’t know about 5 years, but my main goal at the moment is having the song of the summer with «Get Low». Zedd and I think it’s gonna create some memories for people, you know him playing it at festivals and people jumping around and dancing on it. Like Drake with «One Dance» or Bieber. I’d love to be involved with one of the musicians that create the memories. On The Move Mag : Are you planning on going on tour after releasing your album? Liam Payne : I’d love to! I mean, I miss those days where I am on stage and performing to crowds, I definitely got a lot of different emotions to just put out there for people with the songs that I have, which I’m super excited. Hopefully I’ll come to tour France again.

CRIS CAB Brought to the international scene with the hit-single « Liar Liar » in 2014, Cris Cab -Pharrell Williams’ protégé- is back with a summer infused track called « All Of The Girls » featuring Pitbull. After collaborating with different kinds of artists such as J Balvin ou Pharrell, the 24 year old american is working on a second album, soon to be released. Promoting his new single around the world, Cris Cab took the time to sit with On The Move and open up about what’s coming up for him.
15
On The Move Mag: Hey Cris, welcome back! We are glad to have you today with us. Your new single «All Of The Girls» is featuring Pitbull. Is he an artist you’ve always wanted to collaborate with? Cris Cab : Hi On The Move, thank you for having me! Well, I met Pitbull through Pharrell Williams. Pharrell actually brought people to my eighteenth birthday so I met him when I was pretty young and I’ve always wanted to do songs with him because he’s also CubanAmerican and we’re both from Miami so yeah! I love the way he works, when we had the concept of the song we came up to him and he asked if he could join. I’m proud of the result we obtained. On The Move Mag: Do you still work with Pharrell Williams? Cris Cab: Yes! I’ve got a few new songs with him so I’m excited to get those out as well. On The Move Mag: What’s the story behind «All Of The Girls»? Cris Cab: What I really wanted to talk about in the song is that there is something beautiful to be seen in every girl and no matter who you are, where do you come from so that’s really the story there. Women are great, I love women. (laughs) On The Move Mag: You’re preparing a new album that might be called «New Beginnings». Is it because you’re writing about a new chapter in your life? Cris Cab: I’m still not 100% sure about the name of the album. We’ll see. But absolutely yeah. I’ve grown up, learned a lot about me, about my music thanks to my experiences. On The Move Mag: What is the difference between this new album and «Where I Belong»? Cris Cab: Well for one, I’ve learned so much more, you know I’ve grown a lot in the last years and I think now I really understand how to bring out the good qualities of what I can do with my music. We’ve gone bigger and we’re doing better things. On The Move Mag: You also learned more about the music industry, am I right? Cris Cab: Absolutely (laughs). We’ve seen ups and downs in the business.
On The Move Mag: Do you know when your next album will be out? Cris Cab: I am not sure yet because we are in the process of finishing it so we are going to see how that goes but meanwhile we have some other great songs that we want to release beforehand to start hyping up the new album. On The Move Mag: «Where I Belong» has some Sting vibes, and now you’re coming back with a urban sound with «All Of The Girls» or «Turn Out The Light». Is it a way to go back to your roots? Cris Cab: Definitely. We have a lot of reggae feels on the new music but it’s an evolution for sure. The music is a bit faster, it has more energy I think so yeah a bit of reggaeton/dancehall feel also mixed with the reggae. On The Move Mag: Since you’re spending so much time in France, is there a french artist you’d like to collaborate with? Cris Cab: I really want to collaborate with DJ Snake and he actually works at my studio in Miami so it is something I hope we can make happen soon. I’ve actually already gotten to meet him and play some music, he was very excited. On The Move Mag: Is there a place you’ve never been to and would like to go to play at? Cris Cab: Last night actually, we were just proposed to do a show in the Mauritius Island, I’ve heard that’s very beautiful. We’re talking about it now. On The Move Mag: Do you prefer touring or recording? Cris Cab: There’s something great about both aspects. I don’t think I prefer one over the other because when you’re on stage it’s such an exciting and amazing feeling, it’s like instant gratification you know, as soon as you play your song you see the response right away. Whereas in the studio you make something you’re not sure about because you haven’t played it to people. It takes a little longer to receive that satisfaction. On The Move Mag: Are you involved in every aspects of your music, like music videos? Cris Cab: Yeah! I like to put my head in everything, there are different aspects of my career so yes absolutely.

TOM GRENNAN
A husky voice TO sweep you off of your feet
It’s a well-known fact, the United Kingdom has become the hotbed of musical talents: from Adele, to Ed Sheeran but also Sam Smith, Stormzy, Rag’n’Bone Man and many more, there are way too many to mention everybody. So guess where the talent we are about to introduce you is from? Made in the UK, of course! Tom Grennan could never have imagined being a musician and a singer. And yet, the young Brit, who dreamed about becoming a football player, found his voice during a night of partying. Literally found his voice. It was while moving to London for his studies that Tom Grennan’s musical journey began, composing his own songs and performing, himself and his acoustic guitar in local pubs and other small scenes, which reminds us vaguely of the story of our favourite ginger, a great artist named Ed Sheeran... If his introduction to the world and his first success on the music scene is the outcome of an unexpected collaboration with the British drum & bass duo Chase & Status on the single «All Goes Wrong», the young artist has, at only 21 years old, already two beautiful EPs as his current assets. His penchant for blues and soul can be heard in his first EP, «Something In The Water», released in 2016 and produced by Charlie Hugall (who worked with Florence + The Machine, Kaiser Chiefs and Ed Sheeran ). A pretty musical nugget that makes you fall in love with Grennan’s husky and emotional voice. “Lyrics just happen naturally. It’s the little everyday things. It’s natural, it all just pops out. I always try to make the lyrics better but I don’t think you can rush creation. I just go with it and see what happens. It could form into an ugly thing but then you can make it beautiful.” As you may have noticed, there is something special about Tom Grennan’s voice, exceptionally mature and charismatic, which brings his superb songwriting and the stories he integrates to another level with disconcerting accuracy. Tom recently participated in the recording of the song «Bridge Over Trouble Water» alongside Robbie Williams, Liam Payne, James Arthur, Stormzy and many others to help those affected by the tragedy of The Grenfell Tower in London.
His second EP «Release The Brakes» released last March is remarkable. Grennan proves that maturity is not measured by age but by personality, and what we can definitely say is that Tom’s age probably does not reflect the depth and authenticity of his talent. The British newcomer is spontaneous, fresh and prolific, and recently he has introduced us to his new single «Found What I’ve Been Looking For». Would this be a foretaste of a potential first studio album? The title was co-written and produced by Jordan Riley, whose curriculum vitae includes Dua Lipa (for the single «Do It Again»), Nina Nesbitt, but also Zak Abel (for «Voices»). «Found What I’ve Been Looking For» is a dynamic and melodic track that makes us see Tom Grennan in a new light: evolutionary and versatile. The single is a subtle blend of his musical landscape and a few touches of soul and funk perfectly harmonizing with his raucous and powerful voice. It is perfectly clear to us why this young artist is on the worshiped list of BBC Radio 1’s “Sound of 2017 long list” and Tom Grennan is indeed the artist to count on this year!
Listen if you are a fan ofAlthough we don’t really like comparisons as each artist is unique in their own way, you’ll notice a few similarities with Arctic Monkeys or even Jake Bugg.
One song to listen to“Something In The Water” to capture the depth of Tom Grennan’s husky voice. “Found What I’ve Been Looking For”, a soulful and powerful soon to be hit.

RAY BLK
Poetry meets R’n’B and Soulful vibes
If the R&B industry often praises and recognizes men’s talent like Vic Mensa or French Montana, they -most of the time- forget about the girls. For the past few years, some female artists have taken over the charts and are definitely ready to be heard and make their voices count. Following the steps of Jorja Smith and Kehlani, here is the new R&B princess coming all the way from the UK : Ray BLK. Ray BLK, whose real name is Rita Ekwere, was born in Nigeria but moved to London when she was only 4. Catford, the place where she grew up in, has always been a source of pride and inspiration to the young singer. Ray BLK, her stage surname stands for Building, Living and Knowing which she described as her three main values. She might not come from a musical background, but she educated herself by listening to Missy Elliot, Lil Kim and nonetheless than The Notorious B.I.G. At the age of 13, she started a group called «New Found Content» with the now famous producer MNEK. Even though the music they created in his dad’s garage never saw the light of the day, it helped them and filled their desire to write and perform their very own songs. Her first release, the 7-track «Havisham» EP has already gained over 300 000 plays on her Soundcloud page but the singer really rose to fame when she won the prestigious BBC Sound Of 2017 contest, following the path of Adele, Sam Smith or Emeli Sande. The future is definitely bright for this young lady. Today Ray is ready to emerge as one of the most promising British artists and the next RnB sensation. Her EP «Durt» published in 2016 was praised by the critics and the press as well as her singles «50/50» and «My Hood» featuring another british gem, Stormzy. To describe her sound, you can’t simply limit it to his smooth and easy voice but also in the way each track is written and thought. While her voice shines in her songs, it’s the lyrics, deeply rooted in storytelling that showcase Ray’s ability to be honest and real that is really impressive. She easily blends her inspiration with her RnB sound and some melancholy touch and her soulful voice. As a whole, her music displays her personal experiences and her values.
«It’s important to stand for something, to have my music stand for something. On these streets, through concrete, flowers grow» The funny thing is that Ray BLK doesn’t even have an album out yet, she’s just taking her time doing what she loves best : music. Every now and then the singer drops a single that carries her voice and her ideas to keep her fans patiently waiting. And it works amazingly. Still happily unsigned, the 90’s inspired singer is doing things her way, with no pressure. The young singer who always looked up to her mom for inspiration and motivation is now the one who positively influences a young generation of believers. But as Ray always says, it may be an honour but it’s also a lot of pressure as she’s «definitely NOT perfect».
Listen if you are a fan ofSoulful music filled with RnB sounds and impressive vocals. Highly recommanded if you’re already a fan of british singers Jorja Smith and Rationale.
One song to listen to«Doing Me» : This song is basically a kiss-off to the haters. If you’re feeling down and need a bit of motivation and selflove, this song is the right one for you. If you’re not taking anyone’s opinion on board : «Doing Me» will become your next anthem.

JESSIE REYEZ For Jessie Reyez, music is linked to a visceral need to express her feelings. After years of sharpening her interpretation and pen, the Canadian artist, with colombian roots, is finally getting the recognition she deserves. Her EP «Kiddo», and the minimalist yet brilliant single « Figures », is like an open book about her life experiences, in which a lot of people can see themselves. A few weeks ago, Jessie Reyez discussed with us about her music influenced by classic latino singers as well as rappers, her creation process and the people whose meeting have been defining for her career. An heart-to-heart talk.
27
On The Move Mag : Hi Jessie! Very glad to have you here, in France today. Can you tell us how you started making music? Jessie Reyez: Poetry was my entry to it. I used to imitate and sing other people’s songs also : artists like Celia Cruz, a lot of cumbia, boleros and salsa. This is what my parents were listening to actually. That was a cultural influence in the house, but before I started creating my own songs, I was writing poetry. On The Move Mag : You were part of a program called « The Remix Project » that gave a kick-start to your career. You were lucky enough to work with King Louie or Chance The Rapper there. Can you tell us more about that and the collaborations that happened within it? Jessie Reyez: Sure! It is a blessing. If it wasn’t for that program, I wouldn’t be where I am now. Like you said, it definitely gave a kick-start to my career. The program aims to help kids that don’t have the network and don’t have the money to make it into the industry. It helps them in a lot of ways. I was there one day and King Louie came to speak as one of the mentors and he had heard one of my songs before. Gavin Sheppard, the founder of the Remix Project, had played it for him and he liked it and said «let’s work together!». We ended up creating this song called «Living In The Sky». And then, Chance The Rapper gave me the chance to read him lyrics. It kind of snow-balled from there. It was crazy. A lot of other things happened consecutively to it. I met Byron, my manager and he ended up sending my material to someone at BMG. It was just crazy timing how everything happened. The only reason why my song writing skills were getting better was because of the Remix Project and because of the mentorship that I was able to receive there. So then, for the most part of the two years, I was writing primarily for other artists as opposed to writing for myself. It was a very fortunate thing that it happened in that order because I was able to sharpen my pencil before I start completely focusing on my own music. So, it made my habilities just a little sharper, you know. On The Move Mag : You released your first EP last April. Its 7 tracks carry something very personal and rough. But still, you seem 100% free and comfortable with it. How do you feel when composing/performing ? Is it easier for you to express that way ? Jessie Reyez: When I’m composing, sometimes, I feel sad or happy or whatever emotion is in the song. And
then, when I’m performing, it is very strange because it can be such a happy experience to see people vibing and connecting with you or to see people singing along with the music. Most of the time when I create, it is because I’m angry, because I’m sad. So, I write in order to get the feelings out of me you know, like when you’re sick, if you’re food poisoned then you vomit because you need to get it out. If your heart is hurting, you wanna get that out as well and that means for me get it on a song. So it’s this bile product of human experiences : sadness is the song. But time passes and when I’m on stage, where I’m able to share that, it’s a very strange contrast because it’s such sad or angry music but I open my eyes and I see people smiling and singing the songs... It’s very strange. It’s like having day and night or the sun and the moon in the sky at the same time.
« if your heart is hurting, you wanT TO get that out and FOR ME, that means get it on a song » On The Move Mag : Your lyrics are drawn from your own experiences but are very universal and relatable at the same time. Do you write to open yourself to others or to heal those wounds ? Both ? Jessie Reyez: Oh, to heal the wounds definitely. I never wrote for the purpose of connecting with others. It just happened to be a bile product, and to be honest, I wasn’t expecting it to be so positive. I always kind of feel better after I write, as if the sickness was healed as I talked about before. The fact that people connect with «Figures» or send me messages and say «I broke up with my boyfriend or my girlfriend and this is helping me feel better» or ««Gatekeeper» helped me confront my sexual abuser»... Those kind of messages, they’re crazy, they blow my mind. They make me feel so honored to be able to be influencial in someone’s life that I’ve never even met. To be some sort of a positive influence. But it has never been the objective. It is just a positive, happy consequence of creating. On The Move Mag : Is there any subject that are too touchy for you to write about ? Jessie Reyez: I don’t think so! That’s strange, someone else asked me that today but I’ve never been asked that before. But no, I don’t think so. I talk about things that I go through, you know. I feel like censorship is dead
now, especially because of so many creatives that are being open to social media and with more platforms as opposed to having one monopoly which used to be radios. They used to control a lot of what we hear but now there is just so many different ways that you can get your music out. It’s different, you don’t really have to censor if you wanna be honest about your human experiences. You can do it, with freedom. On The Move Mag : Your way of singing is very special, at times melodic and at times almost like you were speaking. Where do that come from ? Is there any artist that influenced that somehow or is it just the way it comes to you naturally ? Jessie Reyez: I don’t know actually. It just comes out. I mean, I listen to different singers and different rappers. I listen to a lot of Biggie and Chance and Kid Cudi and different rappers so I don’t know, maybe I draw some influences from them. I feel like it’s inevitable when you listen to that while you’re growing up, it’s imprinted in your head. It’s the same with singers like Amy Winehouse or Celia Cruz. They influence me so maybe because I had such a diverse palette of music when I was growing up, it’s such a contrast sometimes when I sing. That singing and speaking mixed together. Maybe that’s why but I don’t know! On The Move Mag : I believe you practiced dance quite a lot when you were younger. Is it still a thing ? How does it help you in your current career ? Maybe in the way you perform on stage ? Jessie Reyez: I still dance yeah, mostly when I’m drunk but I still dance (laughs) It’s not like I do dance routines on stage or anything like that so I wouldn’t say that it’s a pillar. But I like to just move, letting your body just feel it, you know. On The Move Mag : You recently collaborated on Calvin Harris’ latest album with the track « Hard to Love ». How did that happen ? Jessie Reyez: On Twitter actually. He sent me a message on Twitter and he was like «Hi, I really like «Figures» and people on the industry are excited about your project and about you and I just thought that you should know that.» and I said «Thank you» but I was blown away, I was like «No way!». Then he said that he was working on a new project and we ended up collaborating. We went out there, to his studio, for one session. It was supposed to be one day and then the day went so well that it turned into a couple of days that went so well themselves that it turned into a week. And
29
then I went back home and back to work but somehow, it had turned into a real friendship. He is a sweet sweet guy, he is up for guidance and along the way, it wasn’t just him and me but also his management that gave kind of a mentorship and guidance to my own management team. It was a blessing that we were able to collaborate and to have them in my life. On The Move Mag : Do you have any other dream collab ? Jessie Reyez: Yes! Frank Ocean, I wanna work with Frank Ocean so bad. I love him, I think he is incredible.
« you don’t really have to censor if you wanna be honest about your human experiences » On The Move Mag : The few videos you released already for « Figures » and « Shutter Island » are very powerful and immersive. « Gatekeeper » is even a short-movie on itself. Which part do you take in the process of imagining/directing the videos ? Jessie Reyez: For «Gatekeeper», it was a depiction of real life so me and Peter Huang went for that but it is very fucking accurate to what really happened. I like to be hands on but I feel like I’m very fortunate to work with such a dope director that has such a dope vision. Especially because that’s not my world, that’s not where I excell so I’m grateful to work with really dope people. And the production company is too, Mad Rock Entertainment is really really great. For «Figures», it happened in a funny way because it wasn’t supposed to be a one take video, it really wasn’t. We shot more things that day. But I remember we were looking back at the footages and when we saw the one that became the video with my managers, we were like «This is it, this is the one take!». We really shot a bunch of shit! The wounds were very fresh so those tears are very real in the music video. I think that’s why it wasn’t boring for me to just sit on a chair. I was scared, I was like «What the fuck? What do you mean like one take?» I thought it was going to be weird and boring but... People liked it! All in all, the videos are very much a team effort.
On The Move Mag : In « Gatekeeper », you somehow warn the public, and especially young women, about the drifts of bad-intentioned people in the music industry. Which advice would you give a young artist (male or female) that would want to make music for a living ? Jessie Reyez: Find one or two people that believe in you, that are good people and that are hard workers. Find those people! You don’t need five people, you don’t need a label, you don’t need any of that to get started. You just need one or two people that believe in you and that are positive influences and that are hungry to succeed, you know. Stick with these people, surround yourself with good, positive people. Work hard, make a list of goals! Put it beside your bed and read it every fucking day so that you don’t forget. Because sometimes we let life get in the way. But it’s very easy to hit the fucking goals if you’re looking at those goals every day. Not to say that it’s easy but it’s easy not to forget what your goals are. If you’re scared to do it, you should do it because you should be even more scared to be sat there thinking about what you should do rather than doing it actually. Time isn’t a way for anybody. There is this quote in Spanish that says «The saints cry for time lost». There is nothing anybody can do once time is gone. That’s all you have so take your shot and if you miss, take your shot again. On The Move Mag : What can be expected from your potential upcoming album ? Jessie Reyez: Me! Just more me, more honesty, more life experiences. I don’t think much about an album though. We’ll see what it is but I feel like music is such a cool place right now that we can deliver different things in different formats. It might not have to be an album. It might be singles, it might be a project, it might be an art installation... Who the fuck knows? But I’m creating so there’s gonna be more creations coming up soon.

SIR THE BAPTIST Forget everything you already know about rap lyrics. Sir The Baptist is here to make you think about life, values, morality, today’s society and more. From homelessness to a household Name. Sir the Baptist is a hip hop’s holistic lyricist, proving himself to be a chaplain of the modern rap culture. His new project «Saint or Sinner» released this year is something you’ve never heard before. If there’s a name you need to remember, it’s his.
33
On The Move Mag : What inspires the music that you make?
whole lives. They’re always looking for peace and the media tear them apart most of the time.
Sir The Baptist: Hip-hop has to change, and in order to make it change, everybody has to be involved. Sometimes it takes extreme measures to change a culture. Hip-hop as we know it right now? Tortures where communities come from, it comes from America, it comes from Brooklyn and Chicago. But they’re tortured with what the expectation of what hiphop is, so we have to change that.
On The Move Mag: Can you talk about the creative and recording process of the album, and what led to the reasoning behind the title «Saint of Sinner» ?
On The Move Mag : How did you start getting into music and what influenced your choice to push into it? Sir The Baptist: I was a really big fan of Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Muddy Waters, Sam Cooke, so I wanted to do music that was similar to theirs. My dad was a preacher and as I was growing up, I wanted to do music that was a reflect of where I grew up.
«For so long in the media, people have just taken pictures of me and were not really listening to what I was trying to say» On The Move Mag : How would you describe your sound? Sir The Baptist: My sound is a mix of negro-spirituals, gospel, RnB, soul, funk and hip-hop. It’s silly music! On The Move Mag : What do you want people to remember you for? What can they expect when they come see Sir the Baptist at a show? Sir The Baptist: I want them to remember me by my spirit. I want my spirit to stay with everyone as much as possible. On The Move Mag: What’s your favorite track off «Saint of sinner» and why? Sir The Baptist: My favorite track is «Heaven», because that’s Stevie Wonder’s favorite song from my album! You know who Stevie Wonder is, right? (Laughs). It’s a story about what artists go through, through their
Sir The Baptist: My whole life I’ve asked myself «Am I a saint or a sinner?». You go through your whole life trying to balance your morals and balance the principles. Balance the societal self and the spiritual self. Who you are in society and who you are when you’re very very spiritual and traditional. On The Move Mag: Are you a saint or a sinner? Sir The Baptist: Hm, that’s the question (laughs). Which one are you? On The Move Mag: What’s the story behind this project? Sir The Baptist: The story behind this project is really just that, saint or sinner. We talk by religion that we are sinner, but religion is the organizational business model of spirituality. It’s not really spirituality within itself. So you need to make sure that you are spiritual and «down to earth» as much as possible, be the balance of both, because the world wants a balance of both. On The Move Mag: Your lyrics talk about society, America and its issues. Do you think it’s important for an artist to use their voices and point out what’s happening in the world? Sir The Baptist: Yes it’s very important, that’s why I’m wearing a mask so you don’t get distracted by what I look like, it’s about what I’m saying. For so long in the media, people have just taken pictures of me and were not really listening to what I was trying to say. I think America is sick. On The Move Mag: Because of Donald Trump? Sir The Baptist: It’s not just one person. It’s a whole cultural thing. When I say sick, I mean people are really unaware of how messed up we are. On The Move Mag: It’s not just America, right? Sir The Baptist: Of course, it’s not just America, but it’s where I come from and that’s what I can speak of. I don’t like Trump at all!
35
On The Move Mag: What are you hoping that listeners will get out of this album? Sir The Baptist: They’ll get more in term with themselves. They’ll become more realistic listeners. In hip-hop you either like trap or you like J.Cole. It has to be a balance, we have to understand what we need to do. There’s so much to fix that it’s time to show the ugly side of it, so then we can fix it. Hip-hop always finds a way to put women where exactly religion put women. The way we see women is horrible. We have so much to fix. You wonder why our lyrics are getting worse, from America, want know why it’s terrible? Because our educational system isn’t focused. They closed down hundreds and hundreds of schools in Chicago, so it’s time for the artist to talk about what’s important, because at the end of the day people do media and everything, companies get rich but the cultures still suffers. It’s not so smart to write things that will change the world. To write like they used to write. When you want to change the world with a few strokes of a pen, you can do that. I need to do that for my culture and my people. We all have to do that.
«It’s time for the artist to talk about what’s important. (...) To write like they used to write. »

OUR BEST ALBUMS
OF JULY Every week of the year, a bunch of records are thrown into the world, portraying the singular influences, universe and sound of artists. Do you get lost in the numerous releases ? On The Move Mag is here to help. This month, as always, we opened our ears and dived into what matters most : music ! Whatever genre suits you, you’ll find something new to discover... Here are our favourite albums released this July.
39
Their first album “Days Are Gone” is still on everyone’s mind: fresh, brilliant with powerful sing-along, the Haim sisters had deeply struck the music industry in 2013. They took their time but here they are again, delivering a new sunshine-vibed album. Throughout the 11 tracks, we can recognize the signature sound the trio has developed 4 years ago, which we discover all over again with pleasure. But there’s still a room for experimentations as in “Walking Away”, a song impregnated with R&B vibes. Each song is definitely unique, but what they all have in common is a retro, almost disco side, as in “Ready For You” or even more in “You Never Knew”. On “Something To Tell You”, we can almost see Danielle, Alana and Este on stage rocking the percussion, like the queens of rhythm they are.
Top 3 tracks: Want You Back, Little Of Your Love, Kept Me Crying
Haim - Something To Tell You As a whole, Mura Masa’s album sounds like what pop music should be nowadays : diverse, authentic and surprising. If you have to describe his album in a few words : the record is confident and a huge step forward. Mura dares and is not afraid to incorporate new vibes and styles to his music. The artist is not perfect and neither is his music, but that’s probably what makes it so special. With so many guest stars -including Charli XCX, A$AP Rocky, Christine and the Queens and Desiigner, there was a risk that the album could become too heavy, but its identity is still very clear. Mura Masa is already a musical genius and his talent is undeniable.
Top 3 tracks: Messy Love, 1 Night, Helpline

Since their first ever single «Pumped Up Kicks» and debut album «Torches» in 2011, Foster The People have come a long way. For «Sacred Hearts Club», the band managed to balance hip-hop, funk, indie and pop sounds and demonstrated a clear evolution, a change in their musical choices. The opening track «Pay The Man» is solid and gives us an insight of what the band is now capable of. «Doing It For The Money» proves to be one of Mark Foster’s strongest vocal performances on the album. At last, «III» is a dreamyelectro song that gives us all the chills. As a whole, the record follows the current music trade : pop songs with uplifting choruses and strong vocals, with a bit of EDM and electro touch. Foster The People is definitely back !
Top 3 tracks: Sit Next To Me, Doing It For The Money, III
Foster The People - Sacred Hearts Club Probably one of the most talented new rappers of his generation, Vic is a committed artist whose words and strong messages strike like a knife in the heart. His latest album «The Autobiography» showcases both his growth and his frustration, but it also proves one thing : Vic Mensa is ready to do his own thing, whether you like it or not. The 15-track album opens with «Say I Didn’t» which feels like an old-school classic with its rap and hip-hop work. The backup vocals also add a nice modern touch to the track and still let a room for Vic’s flow. Later, «Rollin Like A Stone» benefits from an irresistible vintage vibe with the layered yet heavy synths. Finally, «Rage» is a catchy finale, which lets fans eager to hear more. With his debut album, Vic Mensa knows where he stands and what he wants his signature style to be.
Top 3 tracks: Rollin’ like a stoner, Say I didn’t, Heaven On Earth
Vic Mensa - The AUTOBIOGRAPHY
Even if Dan’s debut album «Emerging Adulthood» pushes him out of his comfort zone, it does feel like he could have gone a bit further. And when you know that Dan is actually the one playing all the instruments on the record, you have to admit that his musicianship is undeniable. While the 80’s inspired groove gives «January» and «Educate» its catchy and disco feel, «Sometimes When I’m Lonely» takes you to another universe with its layered and lucid synths. In his lyrics, Dan wants to talk about what he feels and focus on the insecurities which touch and speak to the young generation. This is just the beginning for Dan Croll.
Top 3 tracks : One Of Us, January, Sometimes When I’m Lonely
Dan Croll - Emerging Adulthood
She stayed in the shadows of the most successful pop acts for yearsfrom Britney Spears to Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez- but now is definitely her time to shine. Julia Michaels came from songwriter to hit-performer with one languish and catchy track called «Issues». She topped the charts in no time with this sensual melody and the particular cracks of her voice. Her perfectlyimperfect vocals and the irreverence of her music make her the best hope for the future of American pop music and her very awaited 7-track EP confirms it! Produced by Michaels with the help of Benny Blanco or the best nordic duos as Mattman & Robin and Stargate, it is a journey through different kind of vibes : powerful folk, sweet rock or electronic touches. Every song is a nice pop gem, proving that Julia Michaels’ talent is as surprising as multiple. She goes through every step -from best to worst- of a relationship with that same organic interpretation and honesty in lyrics, and the result is each time equally addictive.
Top 3 tracks : Issues, Worst In Me, Make It Up To You
JULIA MICHAELS - NERVOUS SYSTEM Listening to Calvin Harris’ fifth solo album feels a lot like a coming of age. Inspired by the 80’s, the DJ recently made waves with the hit single «Feels» featuring several superstars like Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams and Big Sean and the groovy «Slide» featuring Migos and Frank Ocean. As a whole, the record is good and fun, and Harris proves once again that he’s capable of producing catchy and pop bangers while introducing new music sensations like the top quality singer Jessie Reyez on the emotional «Hard To Love». Without reinventing pop or changing the course of dance music, we can assure that, with this record, Calvin’s future in the music industry is pretty secure.
Top 3 tracks: Slide, Feels, Hard To Love
Calvin Harris - Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 Renowned for writing politically and socially engaged songs, as “Brazil” in 2015, which achieved him world-class recognition, the 18 year-old British artist has become the prodigy of indie rock music over a short period of time. He has the particular ability to talk about complex or even taboo subjects such as society’s perception of transgender people (“Paracetamol”), religion (“Bethlehem”) or corruption - and turn them into deeply moving and thoughtful songs without ever losing their dancing power. While 6 of the 11 tracks were previously released, “What Do You Think About The Car?” does not lose any charm nor its meaning. “Make Me Your Queen” stands out from the rest in a twisted beautiful way, his lyrics are strong and relatable and that’s why Declan McKenna has become the spokesperson of a whole generation!
Top 3 tracks : Brazil, Make Me Your Queen, Isombard
Declan McKenna - WDYTATC? 41
KEV What is the common point between Avicii, Tove Lo, Zara Larsson, Robyn or Lykke Li? Aside from their international and successful musical careers, it is obviously their swedish roots. And we think we might have found Sweden’s next great sensation… Three producers and a singer performing under the name of KEV, which multi-faceted electro-pop is a true breath of fresh air. With a lot of honesty and humour, Kevin Stefansson, the mediatic face of KEV, talked to us about the formation’s history, present and ambitions. Don’t miss the chance to get to know KEV before everyone else!

really alone of a how
On The Move Mag: Hi Kevin! We’re glad to have you here today. So, you’re there but we believe that KEV is more collaborative project. Can you tell us is this musical adventure structured?
Kevin Stefansson : Hi, thank you for having me! KEV is actually four people: three producers [Victor Sjöström, Sebastian Atas and Viktor Broberg ndlr.] and myself. I am the singer. On stage, it will probably be more than just me in the future but for now, I’m the one who’s going and trying to spread the name. We do all the music together. Basically, there is the producing phasewe do that all four of us in Halmstad in our studio- and then we release the music as KEV. I’m like the artist for the people to see. For the moment, at least! On The Move Mag: How did this start out? Kevin Stefansson: Actually, we had another project before called «Vita Bandet». It was a Swedish project, pop music sung in Swedish. And we started to collaborate with a DJ duo called Galavant in Sweden. After a while, we noticed that we were working really well together. So, we decided to make a common thing because they were making house music, we were making pop music and another guy was more like a rock’n’roll singer-songwriter. We thought that if we did something together, if we combined all that, it could be a really cool project. And it was something that we hadn’t done before. So, we started working together and it turned out to be «Chapter X» the first EP of KEV. And now, we just keep going... On The Move Mag: So, the mix actually worked! Kevin Stefansson: It worked really well! We were friends for a little while back also, so we knew each other but, yeah! That’s where it all started. On The Move Mag: And on a more personal level, what brought you to music? Kevin Stefansson : I’ve been singing for quite a while, but just for fun. I’ve been acting a lot also! So, it’s been like four years maybe making music, and two years on a more serious level. But it’s cool actually to do acting and music because it is somehow kind of the same thing. You’re trying to give people a feeling. You’re trying to explain something with your music or with your acting. So, it’s not that different! On The Move Mag : Does acting help you to be the face of this music project on stage, during promo?
Kevin Stefansson : Yes, I think so! I mean, as I said, you’re trying to give people a feeling and within acting, you’re not yourself so you’re another person. And in this project, even though it’s me on stage, I’m still a product of KEV and I’m showing our songs. So it’s similar yeah. On The Move Mag : When it comes to sound and lyrics, who and what inspires KEV ? Kevin Stefansson : Wow though one! (laughs) We’ve always said that we don’t want to have any boundaries. So then, we take our inspiration from plenty of artists. It’s all from Bon Iver to M83 to Zayn Malik, Justin Bieber, The Weeknd... Quite a wide range! And that’s also what we wanna do. Even if we’re coming from the pop genre, we want to be there but also try to do cool things and experiment. So, many people inspire us! With the lyrics, it is more about trying to take from yourself, your own experiences and stuff like that.
« WHEN I SING, I TRY to give people a feeling » On The Move Mag: How do you guys process to do a track? Kevin Stefansson: Basically, we just meet up in the studio. The others bring some ideas that they wanna develop through the computer. Everybody just sit down together, listen to it and we discuss it like «Well, maybe we should use those drums, these guitars» or whatever. We work together and after a while, when we have a base, we add the lyrics and the song’s melody. And that’s often where I come in, when it’s time for the lyrics. Very often it’s me doing the written words. But the track we’re building it together. On The Move Mag: You guys are creating quite an international and universal sound but you are coming from Sweden. What does your home country bring you? Kevin Stefansson: I think on the visual side, it is very much our nature. We have a beautiful nature and beautiful landscapes. So, of course, we are inspired by this. We have our studio near the harbour so there is like an industrial vibe which is very cool. But if you go like one mile from there, you have a beautiful forest, the ocean and stuff. You can get very inspired by the weather and the landscapes. But at the same time,
45
I think we have this thing in Sweden where artists are making pop music which sometimes can sound pretty happy but have very dark lyrics. I think we’re doing that too, you know. When the winter is coming, everybody in Sweden is getting very low and dark. So, we’re trying to express that, this state of mind. Feel sorry about us! We’re living in Sweden with this weather (laughs) On The Move Mag : We read on another interview that you said «A song is a feeling, a visual, a story». Which stories would KEV want to tell? Kevin Stefansson: That’s a hard question because indeed, every song has its own story. Like, in «Moments», we wanted to let people understand that we only live once and you must try to keep your moments. When you have a moment, just take care of it. Because today, you’re living with your phone and you’re living through your phone so you know... Try to take care of the moments you have. But then again, another song on the EP «Visionary» is more about trying to get there. When you’ve been on a place, maybe a bad place and you try to get to another place, you know, to see the light. So yeah, it’s different all the time. But at the end, there is always that positive side. At the start, maybe our lyrics sound a bit dark but it often ends up well in our stories, yeah, that’s it! (laughs) On The Move Mag : Talking about living through our phones... You’re part of a generation of artists that could completely live through the Internet thanks to the streaming platforms, social medias and so on. How do you still see physical formats? Would there be an actual album for KEV? Kevin Stefansson: I still love that. I love the feeling of an actual album in your hands. And I think that even though it doesn’t sell that much, there are still people who wanna buy real albums. So, we really wanna do it. And we did some with «Chapter X». We printed some, not too many, just a couple to give away. I would love to do an album. Of course, it has a price cost, because if you don’t sell it, the labels don’t want to do it and stuff. But I woud love to make some albums you know, the physical ones. Because I think it’s important to keep it that way too. At the same time, the Internet is why we’re here also, so without it, we wouldn’t be anything. On The Move Mag: It is also a new way of approaching the creation process. A lot of artists now prefer to think in terms of «playlists» more than actual albums. This way, they can release a lot of materials, as often as they want, while an album is a long-term project.
Kevin Stefansson : Yeah, yeah, and you are selling it in different ways. With the playlist, you can buy any track you want while people has to be interested with having 20 tracks or so on a whole album. So that’s definitely different but I’d say complementary! On The Move Mag: Let’s go back to your hit single «Moments». You had it remixed by a lot of the hottest current EDM acts like Sick Individuals, Filatov & Karas... What does it bring to you and the guys of KEV professionally to have your work redone by others ? Kevin Stefansson: It’s definitely a special feeling. You had your vision about the song and then someone takes it and do their thing. It’s really fun, you know, It’s like the song is getting another life almost. Some of the remixes may be closer to the original than others. But, it’s always with their touch and I think it’s really cool to hear it that way. So we’re just really glad and happy to see that «Moments» is getting new vibes.
« every OF OUR songs has its own story » On The Move Mag: How did those remixes happen exactly? Kevin Stefansson: It was our label who organized it all. We got to hear the remixes and say which one we liked and the one we though went well together. So that we didn’t have five same exact versions and could build a strong and meaningful project around that! On The Move Mag: There’s also an acoustic version of «Moments» in that special EP. How was it different for you to do it? Kevin Stefansson: It wasn’t that different. One of the guys Viktor is playing guitar and piano and stuff like that. He’s the one coming from that singing and songwriting style. He was just thinking that maybe we should do an acoustic version and I was totally into it. So he made the track, played in it. It’s half acoustic really, because we had some other things from the computer of course but that was really fun. I mean, it’s almost like a remix as well but more down. On The Move Mag: You also recorded «Moments» with a french artist called Mathieu Canaby with a new title « Moments (Le temps se suspend) ».
47
INTERVIEW: CORALINE BLAISE PHOTOS: DAMIEN PAILLARD
How did this happen also? Did KEV have any link with France before that? Kevin Stefansson: Basically, our management reached out about a year ago. Yeah, a year, time goes fast! They told us that the French business was very hard because the radios prefer to have a French singer on the tracks. So they proposed us to record a duet with an artist they knew. And I was like «Yeah cool». They brought Mathieu Canaby in, he proposed a part for the track and we thought it sounded really good so we went for it! And actually, I met Mathieu yesterday. That was the first time we met. We performed together. That was really cool. He has a beautiful voice and a beautiful personality so it feels good to be able to work with a guy like that. On The Move Mag : Do you come here in France quite often? How does the French audience react to your music? Kevin Stefansson: We’ve only been here for the third time now but I think it’s a good reaction. We have been playing for festivals, radio shows so everybody is happy because it’s free (laughs) But I like it, the last time we played here was in front of 3500 people. We’re about to perform on a much smaller venue, it will be a total other scale. But it should be interesting to see if they still wanna dance! (laughs) On The Move Mag: Is there any particular French artist you like? Kevin Stefansson: Yeah, M83 I would say! We use something similar as «Midnight City» in our own tracks: that vocal intercourse like «uh uh uh-uh» (singing), those very clear gimmicks. So yeah I love them. We were also listening to some French rap and I think it’s really cool. Pretty similar to Swedish rap actually with the use of autotune and stuff like that. But I’m so bad at artists overall, I feel really bad because people are always naming artists. I know the songs but I just can’t! On The Move Mag: You performed for the first time quite recently in your home country, last October. How does it feel to finally bring your stuff on stage? Did it already change the way you create and record your music? Kevin Stefansson: Yes and no. I mean, when you have a show, it’s more about trying to make it work, having a balanced setlist because you wouldn’t want to perform just sad songs or stuff like that. But we’re thinking more about the visuals we wanna have during concerts, to really turn it into an experience. It’s hard when those are
your first date and it’s almost still for fun and to try the materials. But of course, it makes you think about what did work and what didn’t work, what do we like and what does the audience like. Because sometimes it diverges which is interesting because you have to figure out if you’re gonna go for your own heart or for the audience. And it’s tricky because we always said we wanna do music that we like. But the audience, they’re really important because of course, they’re the one that are going to listen to it. But if we don’t like it, they won’t like it either I’m sure. So it was really cool to do it on stage. It’s only like five times we’re performing. But everytime you understand what you wanna do and what direction you wanna go!
« we don’t want to have any boundaries » On The Move Mag: We spotted a photo of you with Will.I.Am on your social media. Can you tell us more about it? Kevin Stefansson: It was in France actually! But that was not a KEV thing. With a bunch of other artists, we did a session with him. It wasn’t just me and him unfortunately (laughs) I’m not sure how much I can say about it but regarding KEV, Black Eyed Peas and Will.I.Am is a very different style from what we do. Though, we wanna work with the best, we wanna try to evolve and be better and stronger all the time in what we’re doing. We’re just open to anything that could happen! We’re working with a guy now called Klahr who is a Swedish artist signed on Axtone. We released a track with him called «Dreaming Wild». What we’re trying to create with him is more of a cinematic feeling. It’s really fun to work with him. he lives near by too so it’s not a whole project to get to him (laughs) We will keep on working with him and probably some other artists. On The Move Mag: Is there any collaboration you dream of? Kevin Stefansson: Hum, dream collaborations! I think The Weeknd would be awesome, I think that working with Ed Sheeran would be really cool actually. Because he is making so so good music and also composing for different artists. He is not afraid to cross boundaries and genres. Actually, I would like to do something with Zara Larsson because she is really cool, she is from Sweden. And M83 would be awesome also, as you understood already! Yeah, that’s a bunch of people... Let’s see! Maybe I need to reach out to them, tell them. Or, maybe, they can read it now! (laughs)

ARE THEY WORTH
SEEING LIVE ? 51
JESSIE REYEZ In the music industry, there are those who melt into the commercial mold to succeed and those who carry around their authenticity like a standard, even if it means some struggles and failures along the way... Jessie Reyez is surely part of the last category! At the Parisian venue FLOW, the Canadian singer-songwriter performed for the first time in France to present her EP «Kiddo» released last April. Within a few seconds, the public understood she isn’t one to feign anything. Thick brown hair, oversized t-shirt and cap stuck on the head, Jessie Reyez started her set with eyes covered by her hat. The first notes are already powerful. We understand that, one way or another, we’re going to be hypnotized by her presence! On « Shutter Island », she is already an uncontrollable ball of energy. The stage is her privileged space to express emotions without any filter, whether she’s fragile, angry or impertinent. Her voice, powerful and precise, follows that roller-coaster of moods. Jessie Reyez can throw a languorous and melodic performance on ballad like «Hard To Love», produced by Calvin Harris, and then deliver a cutting rap on « Fuck It ». She isn’t afraid to force on her voice a bit -even if it means some imperfections- as long as the honesty is intact... and we like it! After a few electric tracks, Jessie Reyez calms down and settles, guitar in hands, for some acoustic songs. She goes for covers with « Cocoa Butter Kisses » from Chance The Rapper feat. Vic Mensa and Twista -a great demonstration of how she modulates her voice- and « THat Part » from ScHoolboy Q feat. Kanye West. The lyrics saying « Me no conversate with the fake » could be her credo. At multiple times, she asks the public « Are you here with your real friends? » ; « You ain’t fucking with the fakes? ». Paris
answers loudly, there is definitely no pretend with Jessie! Then, the artist opens up about a hurtful love from the past in an unreleased track, a soft and honest ballad with highpitched guitar. Back with strength, Jessie Reyez carries on with « Gatekeeper », highlight of her set and EP. The song talks about her encounter with an influential producer who tried to abuse her and said she wouldn’t make it into music without selling her body : « How much would it take for you to spread those legs apart? » The track is a great slap in the face for that evil man and a call for resistance to all women! Anyway, the artist didn’t need to go to that extend to become a « Great One », another track with federative vibes. The set can’t come to an end without «Figures», Jessie Reyez’s hit-single. The crowd sings with her on poignant chorus : « You’re the one who’s gonna lose / Something so special, something so real / Tell me boy, how in the fuck would you feel? ». In front of such an active audience, and under the kind look of her parents, Jessie Reyez seems really touched, almost crying happy tears. Through the night, she didn’t stop talking to us, as if we were one, as an old friend. Sincerity is not only an affair of music but is inherent to her personality. Before leaving for good, the artist literally bursts on the sound of dubstep-infused « Blue Ribbon ». She lets go one last time before allowing Willow Smith to take on the stage. Although the second part of the gig was pleasant, there is something a bit faked about the way Will and Jada Smith’s daughter performs. The two entertainers of the night didn’t exactly come the same way to end up here!

COLDPLAY The gig had been announced months before and the fans were waiting eagerly for it. The British quatuor Coldplay made a stop at the Stade de France for their «A Head Full Of Dreams Tour». Formed in 1996 and led by charismatic Chris Martin, the band made their way into the hearts of millions of fans from different generations through the years, until they become one of the greatest and most respected band of pop music in the world. Used to play in stadiums, the pop/rock band made their return on the French scene with a lot of surprises. For this huge show, nothing was left to chance. As a support, Swedish singer Tove Lo had the temperature rising with fresh songs from her latest album «Lady Wood» as well as older hits like «Habits». Tension were at its highest in the stadium when Coldplay hit the stage. Fans know the band is always up for an energetic show but what a wild one it was ! The set opened up with «O mio babbino caro», a song borrowed to Maria Callas before we could see the four musicians hit the stage, stronger and louder than ever on «A Head Full Of Dreams». The bright and colorful identity of Coldplay was rapidly identifiable. Visibly very happy to be back, Chris Martin was already surrounded with colors before going for classic «Yellow». Some bracelets were distributed at the entrance of the venue in order to reinforce the festive atmosphere of the show. These ones automatically lightened up at key moments of the concert, turning the stadium into one bright light fresco. Three different scenes had been installed for the occasion, giving the possibility to the band to experiment each part of the stadium and to the public to appreciate a particularly dynamic show. Right after they had 80 000 people
screaming the well-known lyrics of «Paradise», the band went towards the second stage to offer us some «Magic» before Chris Martin delivered the ultimate moment of emotion with «Everglow». His powerful voice and ability to spread feelings with sung words never disappoint. Once again, we understood why he is one of the most estimated British artist in the industry nowadays. Worthy of the greatest music shows, Coldplay hit hard on visual effects, explosions and even confetti. After the live DVD of the «Mylo Xyloto Tour» filmed in 2012 in Paris, the French capital could once again be the settings of a recorded show. Chris Martin also greated the Parisian public with some french words at multiple times. Among the setlist, the crowd was gifted with «Hymn For The Weeknd», «Viva La Vida», «Fix You», «Adventure Of A Lifetime» or even an improvised song about Paris especially for the night. After they played « Something Just Like This », their most recent collaboration with EDM duo The Chainsmokers, «A Sky Full Of Stars» and «Up&Up», the quatuor ended the night on a climax with a firework. What an epic end to a show that lasted more than two hours and that looked and sounded like no other ! Coldplay are always as passionate and willing to offer to their public the best show they could possibly set up. The audience rewarded them well, singing and dancing and screaming as one. We will probably never be tired of seeing Coldplay live! Finger crossed they’ll never be tired of touring.

WE WERE THERE : LOLLA PARIS ! It was one of the most important musical announcement of 2017 this year in France : the famous American festival Lollapalooza decided to call Paris its new home at l’Hippodrome de Longchamp for two colorful days with a 5-star lineup. Launched in 1991 by Perry Farrell and already existing in Chicago, Santiago, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires and Berlin, the renowned Lollapalooza which took place in Paris for the very first time this year attracted more than 110 000 festival goers. Farrell who was in the city during the announcement last January claimed that it was an evidence for him to choose Paris as the Lollapalooza new home. L’Hippodrome de Longchamp had a taste of Hollywood last month. Beside the musical side of the festival, we witnessed a real fashion show despite the rain and cloudy atmosphere. We heard speaking french, english, spanish, portuguese and even chinese and swedish showing how international the festival has become. The festival goers didn’t hesitate to show off their best outfits to celebrate two intense days of music. Four stages : Main Stage 1 and 2 welcomed the biggest acts of the festival. Among us, we found Imagine Dragons, The Weeknd, Lana Del Rey or The Red Hot Chili Peppers. The Alternative Stage has been rocked by mostly rock-alt bands while the fans danced the night away on the Perry’s Stage. The rock band Imagine Dragons played for the first time in France their new songs coming from their latest record named «Evolve», released in June. On the setlist we had the pleasure to hear «Thunder », « Gold », Believer », « Demons », « Walking The Wire », or « Radioactive » and a cover of « Song 2 » by Blur. Dan Reynold didn’t hesitate to pay a heart touching tribute to Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington, who committed suicide days before and to the many victims of the attacks that happened over the last couple of years.
The show was so intense that the singer even lost his pants at the end of the set! Imagine Dragons already won over Paris’ heart after their incredible show at Le Zenith during the «Smoke + Mirrors Tour» and showed that they are still one of the best bands out here. We were really glad to discover those new tracks live while reviving the timeless ones. On the Perry’s Stage we met up with Oliver Heldens who made the public jump and dance for an hour before welcoming Milky Chance and their «Stolen Dance» that made the whole audience sing their heart out. In the meantime on the Main Stage 1, the EDM duet Lemaitre played their brand new tracks taken from their debut album «Chapter One» for the first time in France.
On the Alternative Stage, we will remember the performance from the british rock band Glass Animals. With « Life Itself », « Season 2 Episode 3 », « Youth », or « Agnes », the band managed to make people happy, singing along and bouncing while Skepta set Paris on fire on the Main Stage 1 before letting The Roots perform. LP also prepared herself to show what she is capable of at the end of the Glass Animals’ set. Paris welcomed the long awaited The Weeknd at 10PM and the only thing we can say is that it was worth the wait! The Starboy already took our breath away during his show in February and gave, once again, everything he has on the french scene. With « The Hills », « Often », « Starboy », « Can’t Feel My Face » and « Tell Your Friends », « Earned It » or « Or Nah » by Ty Dolla $ign and « Low Life » by Future, the 27-year-old Canadian showed why he’s one of the biggest stars in the world right now. The line up was as exciting on Sunday with the Charli XCX’s pop tunes like « Break The Rules » and « Fancy or Don Broco’s attracting rock sound. We had the pleasure to see Liam Gallagher and the - almost - entire crowd singing « Wonderwall » by Oasis. In the meantime, Alan Walker woke the Bois de Boulogne up with his dynamic set, followed by Don Diablo who mixed today’s biggest hits including « Something Just Like This » by The Chainsmokers and Coldplay. The apparently highly anticipated set by Marshmello went very smoothly and the crowd loved every minute of it. People from all around the festival rushed to the Main Stage 1 where Lana Del Rey was set to play. A lot of fans have also waited for hours to have the chance to get closer to the «Summertime Sadness» singer. While she released her new album «Lust For Life» the week before the show, Lana Del Rey created a well-thought setlist, but a bit boring sometimes. In fact, we noticed a lot of people leaving right after the singer sang «Video Games» because - well - Alt-J was playing the Alternative Stage at the same time and it was a set not to miss out! To close up the week-end, the festival goers had the chance to choose between - on one hand - DJ Snake who turned the Hippodrome into a massive night club or the legendary band Red Hot Chilli Peppers playing « Californication » and « Can’t Stop ». It was a very hard choice to make! In conclusion, the first edition of Lollapalooza Paris was a big success and despite being its first time in France, Lollapalooza has already won everyone over. We definitely can’t wait to return next summer!

WHAT’S UP Marlin, The new face of the french pop-electro scene
IN FRANCE ?
A new generation of exciting young French producers are taking the electro-pop genre to another level. If The Avener, Kazy Lambist, Astre, or Douchka’s talents are undeniable, there are still some new faces who are on their way to the top, as it is now the case for Valentin Marlin -or just, Marlin. Marlin might only be 21, he already has what it takes to be a great artist. He joined a band at the age of 12, but until that, the young kid enjoyed learning and playing with many instruments to try and recreate the sound of his idol : Michael Jackson. At 16, Marlin got noticed and released his first singles and own music. His EP «Nights» came out on July 7th, and offered us some nice gems. The lead single «54321» was basically made for summer with its melodic electro line and its melancholic yet powerful sound. If you listen carefully, you might even hear some rock sonorities and beats in the background. Yes, Marlin is a music lover, and can’t help but play with the genres and mix them to create his very own sound. Don’t be fooled by his age or his nationality, Marlin is a promising artist, ready to leave his mark on the electro scene. Keep his name and music his mind, you’ll see it everywhere sooner than you think !
Once again, Quebec gave us a raw, pure talent. With his blue eyes and seductive voice, Peter Peter seems more than ready to conquer the world and a brand new audience outside the Canadian borders. Three years ago, the singer rose to fame with his debut album «Une version améliorée de la tristesse» and his melancholic sound. Neither a pop singer nor a jazz crooner, Peter Peter is somewhat addicted to poems and cursed poets like Verlaine, Rimbaud and Charles Bukowski. His second album «Noir Eden» was composed in Montrouge and recorded between France and Quebec. The 12 tracks are either dreamy or really dark : on «Allégresse» or «Vénus», he talks about the tragic events that occurred in France and his country while he gets very personal on the other tracks. Much more intimate and experimental that his first record, Peter takes risks, and it’s amazingly good. Between electronic interlude and obscure yet honest lyrics, «Noir Eden» is a must-listen !

A FRESH START FOR PALMER
The story of S U N X is above all a story of friendship. Coming from Lorraine (France), Benjamin, Julian and Thomas first met in school. They gradually developped a common taste for music which tighted them together for good. Each of the three members has now found his place to build a strong formation : Benjamin at the vocals and guitar, Julian at the drums and Thomas at the bass. For six years, they performed under the name of Sun Express. In 2015, they released their first LP called «Heartlight», a surprisingly solid album for such a young formation. The record crossed genres such as pop, rock and electro. Within it, you could hear influences from the likes of Two Door Cinema Club or Walk The Moon on «Dance Till’ The Next Time» or a serious homage to a-ha’s «Take On Me» on «Love». They as well excelled on burning ballads like «Memories» as on heavy and angry melodies with «Longing» They even experimented an electronic instrumental on «BJ In Space». Favor to the boldness of the youth !
In 2015, she hit the set of The Voice France season 4 as the girl next door and left as the next potential pop sensation. With her brilliant cover of «Team» by Lorde, Manon Palmer blew the jury’s mind (and ours) -her interpretation somehow stuck between timidity and power. The one of a kind control she naturally has over her voice brought her through the different steps of the contest and to the live shows. Although she didn’t win that year, Palmer was already set for quite a bright future and left the adventure with a strong fandom by her side. She first tried to make her debut in 2016 with the single «Laisse-moi partir», a pop song with soft oriental vibes but still fragile. After this first shot, 2017 might be her year. She just recently revealed a brand new plan for her career. Her name is simpler and memorable -Palmer-, her visual identity darker and her music more mature. With «Mirage (So Real)», she goes for a sensual bilingual track which chorus sticks in mind thanks to its heady gimmick. A great move that could open her doors outside of France!
S U N X already got dozens of tracks ready to be brought to the world. They are going to use the next months to work on it, create some more and hopefully release a brand new album soon, mirror of their coming of age. And we’re looking forward to it !
© Nikos Aliagas
Along the way, the trio had the opportunity to support french successful acts (Superbus, Pony Pony Run Run, BB Brunes) and sharpen their stage presence. As a proof of their bright evolution, the band recently played the «Jardin du Michel» festival, in their home region, somewhere between the sets of Pete Doherty and Sum 41. After shortening their name to mark a new page of their career, they recently released the new single «Mirror», a frantic and psychedelic pop anthem infused with vintage electronic vibes. Yet, its theme is a bit somber : « It all went from one jam session. When we find a particular atmosphere, the lyrics come easily. This one song is about the free violence that can emanate every day from people. »

OTM TEAM PAM
editorial director I spend most of my time apologizing to my favorite streaming platform for ripping off their «add to playlist» button. When i’m not looking for new artists to talk to you about I drown myself in a sea containing a mix of old R&B and punk-rock sound. Sometimes I go to concert venues more often than I go to bed and I listen to music even when I sleep. I’ll be probably deaf in 40 years but knowing you’ll discover new artists through this mag makes everything worthwhile.
ELODIE
writer Longtime writer for OTM, I love being able to talk about my favourite tracks and artists online. Got a passion for pop, indie and rock bands, Harry Potter and photography. You can usually find me at venues, front row, next to the following curly girl. Spending way too much money on those travels and gigs. But, we only got one life, better get the most out of it !
CORALINE
graphic designer, writer
Wannabe architect, musical writer by passion. I am in love with matter, music and words. Drunk with british indie-rock and popfolk. I guess my wildest dream would be designing and building a gig venue, for which I would decide the opening line-up. In the meantime, I am the curly girl with too much hair, front row.
LUDIVINE
writer
Who am I, in a nutshell? Daydreamer, traveler at heart, sees beauty in everything, concert addict, Germany lover. Music is my escape route and my best friend. Fun fact: I actually own a guitar since I was 4 but I don’t know how to play. I am also the girl that’s like “Hey you gotta listen to this!” and 2 hours later we’re still on YouTube… Oops!
LENA
writer
Meet the youngest of the crew ! Aspiring music journalist and communication student, I spend most of my free time surrounded by books and hot chocolate. Basically obsessed with british pop music and indie artists, if you’re looking for me you’ll probably find me singing my heart out at a concert. if i could turn back time, i’d definitely pop to the Panic! At The Disco show in Chicago in 2008.
