In the current music industry where radios, TV and streaming are the big players deciding to spread the word about an artist (or not), it becomes more and more difficult for a lambda artist to get his music heard if he doesn’t fit some kind of criterias. It takes time, it takes patience, talent but above all it takes a lot of hard work. At On The Move Magazine, we give a particular attention to talent no matter where you come from, your musical genre, the amount of followers/views/fans you have got. We don’t talk quantity, we talk quality. We talk quality because we love music with the big M. We carefully choose the artists you’ll discover in this magazine to introduce you to «la crème de la crème». You’ll find big names, you’ll find unknown names. You’ll love what you’ll listen to, maybe you will hate it but at least, you’ll give our artists a chance. Because at the end of the day, every success story began with a chance given. ‘‘ Pamela Charbit, founder of On The Move

it happened 4 years ago In 2013, One Direction made waves across the world with the release of the «Best Song Ever» music video, breaking the VEVO 24-hour record with 12.3 million views. This might not be their best song ever, but everyone still has in mind the iconic dance routine and the five characters played by the guys themselves.

LOLA MARSH Lola Marsh is a pop-folk duo coming straight from Tel-Aviv. Yael Shoshana Cohen and Gil Landau have been working together for a few years now and promise to take over the international scene very soon. With their debut album ÂŤ Remember Roses Âť, they make us drown in a singular universe, a bit melancolic and built from various personal experiences. On The Move wanted to learn more about this charming music couple coming from the land of milk and honey.

7

On The Move Mag : Hello guys, we are happy to have you in Paris with us today. So you apparently met at Gil’s birthday party. What made you want to work together?

from our heads. Gil can play all kinds of instruments that give us some inspirations and we just start to sing some melodies and the lyrics sometimes come later. I can play a bit of guitar and ukulele as well.

Yael Shoshana Cohen : Hi On The Move ! We are so happy to be back to France. Yes, we met at Gil’s birthday party and it was exciting for the both of us because we were searching for people to work with at that time. Gil sat and started playing on his old father’s guitar, it was a classic guitar, and I came over and started singing something. He then approached me and he said to me «let’s do something together, let’s meet up and write together», and then we started to write music together, and record demos and later to perform. Only the two of us, the band and label came later.

Gil Landeau : You don’t actually need to know how to play. I’m a guitar player and sometimes I’m stuck and think that everything I do is boring, and then I’m like «Yael take the guitar and play something», and then it clicks. Working together is challenging and fulfilling.

Gil Landeau : It was weird at first, it was like a first date (laughs). It wasn’t immediate and writing ten songs during the first meeting, it took time but not a lot of time. Yael Shoshana Cohen : I remember we got our first song after the third meeting.

« It’s really important for us to know what is the world we are creating » On The Move Mag : Was it always an evidence for you both to make music for a living? Gil Landeau : Actually I had a band before but when I met Yael I was like «Ok maybe it’s serious» Yael Shoshana Cohen : Because I’m a serious girl (laughs)

On The Move Mag : Your sound is very unique and has been inspired by a huge range of music. Where do all of those inspirations come from? Yael Shoshana Cohen : For me, I get my inspirations from everything. Traveling, meeting new people, visiting new cities. From things that happened during my childhood, music that I heard in India, festivals ... Gil Landeau : For me, from the age of 23 I started to open my mind to new kinds of music, like classic rock or techno. I try to get inspirations from everything I hear. Yael Shoshana Cohen : I love the singer Edith Piaf. I sang the song «La Vie En Rose» when I was in The Voice in Israel. I learned it by heart, it was hard. I have a French aunt and she taught me the song. On The Move Mag : Where does the name Lola Marsh come from? Gil Landeau : Actually we discovered the meaning a month ago (laughs). We really felt that name just found us. It sounded good for us and fitted to the music. Actually we went to China one month ago and we asked our friend there what Lola Marsh meant. She said it meant «romantic poetry». So we were like «ok that’s why we chose this name».

Gil Landeau : Exactly ! We both believed it and from the third meeting where we wrote that song we kept meeting for 4-5 times a week for 12 hours and just writing all the time. So we took it seriously and knew that was what we wanted to do. On The Move Mag : What is your writing process like? Yael Shoshana Cohen : We meet and sometimes we have inspiration from a book we read, from a song we heard or a movie we saw and sometimes we have no muse and we start inventing things from scratch, directly

9

On The Move Mag : Many of your songs sound like they could be included in the soundtrack of a movie. Is it something you’d like to do in the future, writing some music for films? Yael Shoshana Cohen : We are getting inspired by movies and it’s something we really want to do again. Actually we wrote a song for the movie «Criminal» with Kevin Cosner and Ryan Reynolds, it was for the last scene. We wrote it with two American guys and it was such a brilliant experience, especially when you see your name during the credits (laughs). I’d love to do this again in the future! On The Move Mag : Your debut album is named «Remember Roses», what’s the meaning behind the title? Yael Shoshana Cohen : Like the same Lola Marsh (laughs). We don’t have an exact meaning and reason why we chose this but my parents have a house where we have a rose garden, and thinking about this place makes me happy and I get a good feeling from it, so it has inspired this title.

« Working together is challenging and fulfilling » On The Move Mag : What is your favorite track from the album? Gil Landeau : I think it is «She’s A Rainbow» but it’s like asking me which one of my children I prefer (laughs), but when I hear «She’s A Rainbow» I have a feeling, I don’t know. It’s like in a movie and I can see things when I hear the song. Yael Shoshana Cohen : For me, «Remember Roses». On The Move Mag : Do you prefer touring or recording? Yael Shoshana Cohen : I prefer touring. It’s more relaxed, you meet new people and go to new places. I love this. Gil Landeau : On tour you know what your schedule looks like every day but I think what is beautiful about being a musician is that one time you’re in the studio and one time you’re on tour. It’s diverse and dynamic, you’re not getting bored. For me that’s the best.

On The Move Mag : Why did you choose to sing only in english and not in Hebrew? Yael Shoshana Cohen : I’d say it was not a decision we made from the start. It was more like «let’s write a song» and it came out in English. Gil Landeau : It was not a real decision, it just happened. On The Move Mag : How does Tel-Aviv inspires your music? Yael Shoshana Cohen : Tel-Aviv is really artistic and you have so much music and art. Just living there inspired us. Gil Landeau : I have so many talented friends in Tel-Aviv. I go to their studio and we just play a little bit so I guess I’m inspired by them. There are a lot of great musicians and artists out there. Yael Shoshana Cohen : The music scene is really diverse. You have pop, folk, electronic, hip-hop. You get inspired by the atmosphere, and the food is the best. On The Move Mag : Are you involved in everything happening around Lola Marsh, including the visuals, the music videos...? Yael Shoshana Cohen : Of course. It was really important for us to know what is the world we are creating. Gil produced the album, I was involved in the album cover ... Gil Landeau : It’s important for us from the first photoshoot, the silly one we did 6 years ago. We really thought about it and not doing it like that. It always has a concept. Yael Shoshana Cohen: It is hard to have a concept, it took time but I think we found something. On The Move Mag : Where do you want to see yourself in 5 years? Gil Landeau : I went to Tel-Aviv like a week ago and I heard one of our songs from an apartment and I was excited about it, it touched me, so maybe I’d like to hear more of our songs from more apartments (laughs) Yael Shoshana Cohen : Actually my neighbors listen to Lola Marsh all the time and I just want to shoot «It’s me!» from the window but I need to keep it professional (laughs) INTERVIEW by PAM CHARBIT PHOTOS : DAVID FITT

MARIO If you are a fan of good R&B sounds you probably already know a lot about Mario. After dedicating his time to other areas in his life, Mario is back in the music game for good with his new single « Pain Is The New Pleasure» and announcing his first independent album coming up soon. It’s time for you to meet the man.

13

On The Move Mag : Hey Mario, great having you today with us. Where have you been since DNA?

On The Move Mag : Will you try to recreate the massive success of your album «Turning Point» ?

Mario : Thank you for having me, I’m grateful to be here in Paris ! I’ve been travelling a lot, working, recording, getting a label together. I’ve got my own record label now named «New Citizen» imprint in partnership with EMPIRE, and I’m preparing to come back.

Mario : Not at all. I don’t go into creative process like that. A lot of fans ask me all the time «when are you going to do another ‘Let Me Love You’» but it’s kind of impossible to aline stars in that way, it doesn’t work like that. I think that record is so special on its own and how classic it is that it’s impossible to recreate that but what I’d like to do is create more moments. I’ve been doing this since I was 15 now and I’m like «who are you as a man, as a person? What do you want to give to the world, beyond just music?». That’s kind of where I am now. Beyond being successful I want people to be able to relate to my music. I have fans who have very similar stories to me when growing up. You know my mom was a drug addict since I can’t remember, I didn’t grow up with my father. I want to do right about things that matter to me and I want to relate to people outside of just the R&B audience.

On The Move Mag : Did you sign new artists yet? Mario : Not yet, I have some producers that I signed but no artist yet. I think that taking on responsabilities right now would be a lot for me. I am about to release my first independent release and my album would be the first album distributed on this label. On The Move Mag : Is your new record ready? Mario .: It is ready at 85%. We are going to finish it and probably make some masters at the end of July.

« I want to relate to people outside of just the R&B audience » On The Move Mag : You do already have the name for your new album, right ? Why did you choose it? Mario : I do, it is called Cosmo 17. When I think about the music that I’m making now and how it evolved, and how I wanna touch people all around the world. It’s an universal project. The concept aren’t just straightforward R&B driven, if you listen to my new single «Pain Is The New Pleasure» it’s very personal. I allow my fans to come into my personal space with his album. This is probably my most personal album to date. The number 17 has a very significant relation in my life. I believe in numerology and all those things so that’s what this number represents : it represents insights, it represents spiritual consciousness, it represents all the things that I try to express. On The Move Mag : What will the album sound like? Mario : For instance «Pain Is The New Pleasure» is a mix of electronic-soul-R&B, so what you gonna get on the album is a little bit on everything. It’s not something you can put in one genre. I got disco, ballades and a little bit on everything on here.

On The Move Mag : Talking about R&B, are there some new R&B artists that you like? Mario : I like Stromae ! (laughs). I think he’s very creative and talks about things that matter, things that people can relate to. I can’t even speak french but I can feel the sentiment and I think this is what music is about, it’s about connecting cultures. You just told me he sold out the Madison Square Garden twice in the US, that shows how powerful music is. But as far as R&B artists... I think there are not a lot of real R&B artists out right now to be honest. I like Anderson Paak, I think he’s amazing. I love Bruno Mars as well. On The Move Mag : Are you going to have some collaborations on your new record? Mario : We are finishing the album first and then I’m gonna add ... I can’t really talk about the one I just got a call from today but it’s classic and it’s really special. I’m creating moments that I think is gonna be like something that I’ve never done before. Staples moments, Grammy moments. (laughs). On The Move Mag : Do you want to go back on tour after releasing the album? Mario : Absolutely. This is my main goal to be honest with you. They are like «Yo, you should tour now» and I’m like «No I want to put the album out first». I want my fans to know the music and to be connected to it. Touring is like heaven. Creating a project is like you still are living on earth, and then you die and the

15

17

album comes out and then you go to heaven, you go to tour. I know this is crazy (laughs) but yes. And then when they sing along with you it’s like angels on heaven singing, it goes like that ... in my head (laughs). On The Move Mag : What is your creative process like? How do you create a song? Mario : You have to go and see. Go and see crazy places where all your fears and all of your inhibitions and everything live. You get there and you wonder «who am I?» and then you create from that space. The creative process is like when you start a song and you think «I love that song» and then you record it and you’re like «I hate that song» and you listen to it more and you fall in love with it again. I don’t know. I don’t even understand the creative process to be honest with you, I’m the wrong artist to ask that to (laughs). It’s just like a flow, a vibe and a feeling I guess. When I’m creating on the spot with just me and you in the studio together, it starts with a vibe. We talk about life, about what we want out of life, we talk about situations and then we start messing with sounds and then we find a sound that can fit with what this vibe feels like and then we go from there. That’s how I like to do it because I feel like the energy that is put into it comes from a real place. I do not take a track from a producer that is already done, unless I really love it because it feels different when you do it from scratch. It’s like having a one night stand vs. the girl you really are into (laughs). On The Move Mag : Is there a specific artist or producer you really want to collaborate with? Mario : Kendrick Lamar! He absolutely should to be on this song that I have. Actually I have two songs I think he could be on. Female artist? Jhené Aiko for sure. On The Move Mag : Are you tired of people bringing «Let Me Love You» to you? Mario : No I don’t get tired of it. Because it’s a moment in time that I feel like is important in music. There was no other song like that when the record came out, it was the new sound of R&B. For me it will always be something special. On The Move Mag : Do all of your songs come from personal experiences? Mario : Some of them yes. It’s personal experiences mixed with a bit of creativity. I think the most honest song that I wrote was probably «I Choose You» because I was dating a girl, I mean I see a lot of beautiful

women and you never think that you fall for somebody so quickly. I met her and I knew for a fact that I wanted to get to know her and spend time with her. It was no question, It was automatic. At the time when I first met her she was in a relationship and I respected that so we just talked as friends for a while and she didn’t tell me when she broke up with him. I heard about it four months later. She told me that she wasn’t trying to date for a long time and I flew back to see her and it was the most awkward thing ever because her energy was completely different, she wasn’t the same person and I think it has a lot to do with what she went through. I stayed patient and we ended up dating for like a year and that song was about her.

« I’m building a foundation of who I am as a man » On The Move Mag : Now that you are 30, what are your goals for the future? Mario : I definitely have become a business man, there are some other businesses that I’ve been investing my time and money into. Music is great but it’s so up and down, I have had a very successful run in music but I wanna experience other things, investment wise, business wise. I’ve had those thoughts about being in a serious long relationship because when I’m not working and want to enjoy life and take a trip somewhere I don’t wanna go by myself. I’m building a foundation of who I am as a man now, no more games. On The Move Mag : What do you think about today’s society? Mario : I think there are leaders in our society who think that some people are extremely impressionable. The people who don’t know who they are are the most impressionnable, especially where I live. I think in America people are very impressionnable and can be sway in so many different ways. I think that we focus on everything outside of us most that focus on who we are individually. I think there need to be more free minds, especially where I live I think people can be a little more open-minded and free. I think we need to bring the passion and the love back to the earth. I think that would help to change the human experience. I think music, arts, free thoughts and a little more versatility when it comes to the mainstream expression as a whole, because I feel like a lot of great things and a lot of great ideas are not given the opportunity to be brought to the light.

JESSIE REYEZ

realness meets honesty

When it comes to Jessie Reyez, it’s deeper than just singing. At 27, the singer is very passionate and always delivers intense performances. Raised and born in Toronto, Jessie slowly but surely made her way to success thanks to her peculiar voice and her songs that vary from dark hip-hop to broken RnB. Jessie Reyez was pretty much born to make music. Her father plays guitar and she soon felt a connection with reggae which she was introduced to as a child. Even before that, Jessie spent her childhood watching opera and trying to sing back. «My mom saw that I really liked music and so she put me in piano lessons when I was about three years old.» The detail that started it all. Before moving to Miami, the singer wrote and performed her very own songs over the years thanks to the support of her family and teacher. In 2014, she returned to her hometown, Toronto, and joined the Remix Project, a collaboration that connected her to Chance The Rapper and King Louie. «The Remix Project changed my life. It’s cool because everyone there has the same objective of building up their portfolio and learning, and everyone ends up pushing each other. Everything kind of snowballed from there.» Jessie’s songs vary from dark hip/hop to a fragile yet powerful RnB with honest lyrics. But what really strikes us is the purity of her voice when she starts singing or during the rap parts. Raw and unique, Jessie has her own identity that shines through her music. Since then, Reyez released her debut EP, «Kiddo». The 7-tracks EP is a gem and truly showcases Jessie’s vocal range while also putting upfront her songwriting ability. It only takes one listening to recognize her talent. As a part of the EP, she released a music video for «Figures». During a solid 4 minutes, the singer smashes her guitar to the ground before looking to the camera with such intensity in her eyes that even you can’t stop looking. Revealing different parts of her personnality and her vulnerability aswell as her weaknesses. Later she shared a gut-wrenching short film for «Gatekeeper». The music video is about the sexism in the

music industry. Once again, Jessie is honest and stands up for what she believes in. Jessie had a dream and she did everything she could to make it real.

«How much do you really want what you’re chasing? If this is the only obstacle, are you willing to break? The fact that you have to question your morality and question your own boundaries, shakes. I feel like it would shake anyone.» Inspired by some of the greatest artists like Amy Whinehouse and Bob Marley, her dream collaboration would be to sing with Frank Ocean. Lately she was featured on Calvin Harris’ latest album along with Ariana Grande, Migos, Katy Perry and Pharell Williams. Their song «Hard To Love» is a perfect mix of what the two artists are capable of. With a bit of RnB, a touch of electro and a hint of reggae, Jessie is set to be big in the near future !

Listen if you are a fan ofSoft and fragile, yet inspirational songs that show her vision. Highly recommended if you’re a fan of Chance the Rapper and others raw and unique artists.

One song to listen toGatekeeper : more than just a simple track, it’s an eyeopening song on what it’s like to be a woman in today’s music industry. Reyez talks with honesty about the situation she’s been in and appears more vulnerable than ever. Throughout the whole song, her soft vocals take over and play with our emotions. Beautiful yet heartbreaking.

OSCAR AND THE WOLF soft-hearted fierce lover from outer space You might not have heard of Oscar and The Wolf just yet, but the 26 year-old Belgian boy, also known as Max Colombie, is what we call a superstar in his home country. Selling out arenas in Belgium, The Netherlands or Turkey, he has reached a wider European audience with his debut album « Entity » released in 2014. His stage name might sound like a band name but behind it is mainly a tormented dreamer seeking refuge somewhere between brightness and darkness. Oscar and The Wolf first drew the Belgian audience’s attention with 2 EPs called « Imagine Mountains » and « Summer Skin », gathered in an EP Collection released in 2013. His unique sound could be explained by the duality carried in his own name. « Oscar » stands for a bright and poetic persona and the « Wolf » for a more enigmatic and lone creature of the night ; both being Max Colombie’s alter egos. Gradually, Oscar and The Wolf touched a more general audience with « Princes », « Strange Entity » or « Undress » which made it to the tracklist of his album « Entity » released in April 2014. As his previous productions, the record is tinged with melancholy and slow beats, but plays with an odd (in the good way) mix between soul, hip-hop, r’n’b, electro and that’s exactly where lies Oscar and The Wolf ’s uniqueness : in its hybridity. The tracks are ethereal, mysterious and fiery, carried by Max’s powerfully gloomy but soothing and warm voice, giving them an intense and striking impact. Actually, « Entity » represents something, someone you are attracted to but can’t ever manage to catch or comprehend. This eternal yearning lies in everything Max sings, with lyrics such as « Oh my baby, please come see me I don’t want you to go now » « I lost you, I miss you, I wanna hold you » « Run for the gold, run for the money, run for the infinity ». The experience of «Entity» feels like having a dream while running a fever. This dual, paradoxical mood is inherently living in all Oscar and The Wolf ’s music. Oscar and The Wolf also has got a whole aesthetic on its own. His glittery saturnine universe produces a complex, singular and sensitive imagery. His live shows are an otherworldly and timeless party-journey enhanced by Max Colombie’s sensual dance moves, unique clothing style, stage persona and natural aura. With fellow musicians Ozan Bozdag, Claudio Arduini and Jasper Bullynck, he performs his songs in a heavier way than studio versions.

What is Max up to now? During summer 2016, he had us wait with « The Game », a song hinting at a darker r’n’b sound, but which seems however not to have made it to the tracklist of his sophomore album «Infinity» due September 29th of this year. Earlier this June, he has begun the promotion of his long awaited new album by releasing « So Real ». It still contains Oscar and The Wolf ’s misty own singular touches, but got heavier beats and sounds more haunting, futuristic and sultry than ever. This single is followed by « Breathing », more nostalgic and danceable, which the performer describes as a « celebration of sadness ». Therefore, Oscar and The Wolf ’s new material promises to sound very varied. This « eclectic collection of songs » will find its source in drama, in the manner of « Entity » that found its source in heartbreaks : creation still arising from pain and desire. Oscar and The Wolf started this summer the promotion of « Infinity » by playing on renowned European festivals such as Rock Werchter or Tomorrowland before heading on tour this fall. « Run for the infinity » Max Colombie sings in « Princes ». Do not run for it no more because it’s coming on September 29th. Or maybe you should, if you wanna make sure to get your copy !

Listen if you are a fan ofLana Del Rey ! Both coming from their own planet -or terrestrial paradise, their overpowering sound and recognizable persona spreads eerie and dreamy vibes.

One song to listen to« Breathing » sounds like stars knocking together in a galaxy party and most likely represents what «Infinity» is heading towards with some «Entity»’s distinctive features at the same time.

ANDREAS MOE SWEDEN’S POP-FOLK JEWEL For quite a while, the UK seemed like the most prolific territory for young pop sensations. But, in the last couple of months, we’ve seen a bunch of young talents emerging for quite up North. Zara Larsson, Dagny or Aurora are part of the hottest female performers now and are all coming from Scandinavia. A feature they share with Andreas Moe, a singer, songwriter, producer and multi-intrumentalist that is on its way to add some Swedish sparks to the pop acoustic international scene. Born and raised in Stockholm, Andreas Moe didn’t succeed in music with the help of anything else but his longtime passion and hard-worker personality. Drawing inspiration from the performer skills of Michael Jackson or the instrumental genius of Jeff Buckley, Andreas Moe made himself heard by performing a lot in his home city. With time and experience, he first caught the attention of his peers for his guitar skills, accompanying some famous swedish acts on stage. Constantly composing his own materials, Moe eventually signed a record deal.

His voice, generally full and warm on verses, hit some high ranges on choruses, demonstrating a beautiful hability to nuance his interpretations. Andreas has supported the likes of Gabrielle Aplin or Kodaline on their respective tours. The 28 year old singer was recently chosen by John Mayer himself to support him on his European Tour «The Search For Everything» last May.

Starting in 2011, Andreas Moe initiated his solo journey. He first found a great hightlight thanks to collaborations in the EDM field. Tiesto, Hardwell, Avicii or Fedde Le Grand... They all wanted Andreas Moe’s voice on their tracks. You’ve heard him on Avicii’s track «Fade Into Darkness»-then reinterpretated by Leona Lewis- or in John De Sohn’s upbeat «Long Time».

It was the perfect opportunity for Andreas Moe to promote his brand new single named «Bus Stop». This beautiful romantic track hit pause at the crucial moment of a meeting, at a bus stop, where two people could start a nice journey together or just go their own ways. It all depends on what they’ll decide - or dare - to do within these precious minutes. On a melody mixing guitar riffs, keys, tambourin, choirs and heady whistles, «Bus Stop» is a charming invitation to take chances.

But Andreas couldn’t eternally be a rather anonymous distorted voice on this rather commercial tracks. Since 2012, he released several EPs on his own, going from a nice pop softly wrapped in electro vibes in «Collecting Sunlight» (2012) to folker territories in «Borderline» (2015).

Listen if you are a fan of-

«Whatever people wanna call my music is fine. Maybe pop? maybe rock? Guitar driven folk? what about ’Genuinestraightfromtheheartstyleofmusic’?» Along the way, his high-pitched single «Ocean» in 2014 made great waves, now counting more than 10 million of streams only on Spotify. The next year, Andreas released his debut album «Before the Rumble Comes». The most recent productions by Andreas Moe are characterised by a light and uplifting folk, playing with some federatives gimmicks as The Lumineers could use.

Soft pop-folk that is enhanced by upbeat gimmicks on studio versions and is roughly touching on acoustic ones. - with a voice always equally bright and shaded.

One song to listen to«Step Down From It» for its authentic sound, so rugged it has something to do with country music.

KLINGANDE When EDM seems to be more popular than ever in the music industry, numerous DJs and producers try to play their cards right in a genre oversaturated by the presence of superstars such as David Guetta, DJ Snake, Calvin Harris, Diplo, Kygo or else. If a lot of rising sensations are coming from nordic lands, France also got its talents. Among them, CĂŠdric Steinmyller, a.k.a Klingande, is bound to become big with his infectious tracks. Get to know the artist.

29

On The Move Mag : Hi Cédric, we are happy to have you with us today! Your stage name but also your first tracks are all named in Swedish. Why? Klingande : Hi On The Move! I’m happy to be here too. Well, using Swedish was a way for me to remain anonymous. No one knew who I was, my friends sometimes showed me my own songs, it was funny (laughs). Also, I’ve always loved Swedish producers, Avicii first. They have been a great inspiration for me from the very start so it made just sense to use this language. However, after «Riva» I stopped using Swedish language because I told myself that people needed to understand the title of the song and connect with it so I got back to English. On The Move Mag : There are a lot of sub-genres in the electro world so why did you choose to make deep / tropical house music? Klingande : It wasn’t really my choice actually. When I started making music I was inspired by people like Bakermat and the term «tropical house» wasn’t even a thing. It happened later. I’ve never put myself in the «tropical house box» because to me, it’s more like Kygo’s thing but people said I made tropical house music because my songs have a summer vibe (laughs) which is good, I don’t have any problem with that label.

« I LOVE UNUSUAL VOICES » On The Move Mag : You used the saxophone a lot in your tracks and always have a saxophone player during shows. Is it an instrument you particulary affectionate? Klingande : I’m used to touring with musicians and I got used to having this instrument around me. The saxophone player is a friend and I think it brings something unique to the live. Now, I also have a violin player on tour with me. I really would like to have a full band with me on stage at some point. It’s complicated to make this happen at the moment, but I hope we will be able to do this one day. That would be awesome!

my new single in September and then I’ll reveal some new projects. I’ll get a new rhythm. When I first started making music I didn’t know how everything worked and I took my time, too much time to release anything. There were opportunities that I could have but that I possibly missed out because of this. I learned from my mistakes and I know I need to be quick now (laughs). It is also hard to make quality music when you are constantly on the road. On The Move Mag : Is there someone you really want to collaborate with in the future? Klingande : There’s no specific artist I need to work with. I released a single with Broken Back who has a really particular, special voice and I love that. I love unusual voices. This is not something you already heard somewhere and it surprises people. I prefer that than just having a big name on a song. Of course if you give me one to collaborate with I wouldn’t say no (laughs), it’s just not my priority. The craziest thing would be to collaborate with Florence + The Machine! On The Move Mag : Do you have french musical inspirations? We are great when it comes to EDM... Klingande : Absolutely, France is killing it in the EDM world. I’d say Justice of course, not to mention Daft Punk which is a way too obvious (laughs). Other than that, I love Martin Solveig’s new musical direction. I love what he produces. I also love Feder and The Avener, they are both great! On The Move Mag : What are your three favorite tracks at the moment? Klingande : French Montana «Unforgettable», I love «Territory» by The Blaze, the whole EP is awesome. And finally, i’d say «Suave» by Lino Nayati.

INTERVIEW by PAM CHARBIT PHOTOS : DAVID FITT

On The Move Mag : What can be expect from you ? Are you working on an EP or an album maybe? Klingande : I think I’ll need to have a hit before thinking about releasing a full album. My biggest single was «Jubel» but it’s been a while now. After that I had a couple of successes but not a huge hit. I’m releasing

OUR BEST ALBUMS

OF JUNE Every week of the year, a bunch of records are thrown into the world, portraying the singular influences, universe and sound of artists. Do you get lost in the numerous releases ? On The Move is here to help. This month, as always, we opened our ears and dived into what matters most : music ! Whatever genre suits you, you’ll find something new to discover... Here are our favourite albums released this June.

The second album is always a tricky exercise, especially when four years have passed and you were exceptionally young on the first one... New-Zealander shining star Lorde is back with «Melodrama». In collaboration with Jack Antonoff from Bleachers and the producers of Frank Ocean or Drake, Lorde uses her sharp lyrical skills to focus on herself, express her loneliness... and ours, ringing as a universal echo. Textures might be the key words for this production : in her vocal interpretation and in the melodies. She can propose haunting pop, mechanical instrumentals and electro infused hip-hop on a single track. With a supersonic sense of tempo, the songs of «Melodrama» can crack and snap, fade away or explode at any second, channelling a sweet weirdness at times. For a melodrama, it is unusually subtle.

Top 3 tracks: Homemade Dynamite, Hard Feelings/Loveless, Supercut

LORDE - MELODRAMA

For almost two years now, Dua Lipa has been greeting us with some of the most infectious electro-pop anthems... But her long-awaited first album goes even further than that. At times simple, at times hybrid, the 17-track «Dua Lipa» album displays the artist’s large creativity and various influences. From the reggae twist of «Genesis» to the 80’s vibes of «Lost In Your Light», Dua Lipa adds some new sparks to her ever-lasting flamboyant pop, with the help of Miguel and Chris Martin on particular featurings. She is sensitive, sulfuruous, feminist, languorous, in love, dark… definitely a plural person and artist. Every track is sharply efficient, some bolder than others. This variety can sometimes become confusing though. But we won’t blame Dua Lipa for the complexity of her feelings, and for her to want to share them with us ! She is only 21 and forget the «next», she’s definitely a big thing.

Top 3 tracks: Blow Your Mind (Mwah), No Goodbyes, Last Dance

DUA LIPA - DUA LIPA

In a matter of only 3 years, Royal Blood has established itself in the rock scene among so many other bands. What’s their secret? The British band has bet on an explosive drum and bass duet which works wonders. Their first eponymous album has aimed very high and we bet it was a heavy task to succeed to that one. But “How Did We Get So Dark?” starts pretty well and we immediately notice some progress, namely with the mixing and Mike Kerr’s assertive vocals. The atmosphere is softer yet still explosive thanks to the energetic riffs. “Lights Out” is probably the highlight of the album, blowing everything away like a tornado, with just a bit of nagging. Tracks like “Hook, Line & Sinker” or “I Only Lie When I Love You” work perfectly in a way that only Royal Blood knows, while exploring some new melodies and sounds as in “Hole In Your Heart” which features just a touch of synths. Royal Blood is proving you can reinvent yourself while being loyal and consistent with who you are as a band and believe us, it’s not beginner’s luck.

Top 3 tracks: Lights Out, Hook Line & Sinker, Hole In Your Heart

ROYAL BLOOD - HOW DID WE GET SO DARK? With «Hopeless Fountain Kingdom», Halsey intends to give a new breath to her career and music. If some fans will regret the slightly changes in the composition of her tunes, Halsey still manages to put out an album rich of a thousand of inspirations and full of risks ! Both experimental and authentic, on the lead single «Now Or Never» or «Eyes Closed», Halsey really puts her talent upfront and once again illustrates herself as a musical genius. Later on «Sorry», her emotions really takeover and we are quite overwhelmed. Trust us «Hopeless Fountain Kingdom» is worth listening !

Top 3 tracks: Strangers, Sorry, Alone

HALSEY - HOPELESS FOUNTAIN KINGDOM

Alt-J’s recipe is not random and it has always been difficult to explain it due to a superposition of melodies, a wide variety of instruments and an easily recognizable yet particular voice. After “An Awesome Wave” and “This Is All Yours” which have been largely praised all over the world, especially their first album which received the 2012 British Mercury Prize, the indie rock trio is back with experimentation. “Relaxer” contains only 8 tracks, all unique and different from one another, but manages to give an insightful of what Alt-J is experimenting and is capable of. While “3WW” opens the record softly, “Cold Blood” has a very interesting catch and “Hit Me Like A Snare” is by far the most rock’n’roll song of the band’s discography. Some might say the whole is not consistent but we believe the unknown and the exploration of new sounds and influences show the fruit of the band’s labours, which is an incredible beauty and a profound richness. If only we had more songs to listen to!

Top 3 tracks : 3WW, In Cold Blood, Last Year

ALT-J - RELAXER

Jay-Z is back in the game with his 13th studio album which seems to be his responses and apologies to the latest events occurring in his life including his feud with Kanye West, the accusations of betrayal made by his wife Beyonce on her album «Lemonade», and his mother’s sexuality. Produced by No ID, 4:44 shows Jay-Z’s unusual vulnerability where «Kill Jay Z» displays his disagreement with long time friend Kanye West and references the incident where Beyonce’s sister Solange attacked him in an elevator in 2014. The artist seems to keep it real with his fans and as one of the most influential men in HipHop, Jay-Z raps like a man once again confortable in his own skin.

Top 3 tracks : The Story of O.J, 4:44, Legacy

JAY Z - 4:44

They present it as an evolution, we’ll take it as a transition. The American alt-rock formation Imagine Dragons renews itself in «Evolve» by manipulating new sonorities. The tracklist plays with an electronic touch, either soothing, vintage or catchy. Hip-hop is still there, in the particular way Dan Reynolds sings, and rock is heard in musical or vocal soarings. « Evolve » was composed in a happier and healthier phase for the band, than «Smoke + Mirrors» was, resulting in an album way more positive. Surrounded by new producers, the band is looking ahead, not backwards, singing on an epic instrumental : «Here’s to my future / Here’s to my yesterday / Here’s to change (...) No tomorrow without a yesterday (...) Goodbye to yesterday ». Despite it, Imagine Dragons’ new album ends up being a more mainstream record, with very little risks taken into the formats of the song... Still, its federative power is equal. So, even if the studio production might not be their most interesting, it surely has the potential to turn some stadiums upside down !

Top 3 tracks: Believer, Yesterday, Start Over

IMAGINE DRAGONS - EVOLVE

All Time Low have grown, or well, we thought so. With their latest album, «Last Young Renegade», the band puts out an album worth of a million of sounds and inspirations. Bold and powerful, the album is a collection of intense energy, even if the vocal effects and programmed beats slightly take over the traditional guitars riffs and drums. Original fans might feel left behind but, don’t worry, what truly makes ATL is still here : their punk attitude and perfectly written lyrics. While the lead single, «Dirty Laundry» is soft and delicate, «Nice2KnoU» is a rather upbeat callback to their pop punk days. Yes, «Last Young Renegade» is a major step forward, but All Time Low are still looking back, and are definitely not ready to let go !

Top 3 tracks : Dirty Laundry, Nightmares, Good Times

ALL TIME LOW - LAST YOUNG RENEGADE 37

AJR Forming a band in New-York a few years ago, the three brothers Adam, Jack et Ryan Met started singing and producing together at an early age, while they were still studying. A few years -and several EPs- later, they released their debut album «The Living Room» in 2015 but they reached a wider success only last year with the single «Weak». Coming back into the spotlights with their second record «The Click», On The Move met the trio for an exclusive interview, talking creation process, inspirations and touring.

39

On The Move Mag : AJR is composed of all of you three brothers. What are the pros and the cons of working with your siblings? Jack Met: I think the pros are that you are already so close and I think that there is much less of a chance that you will part ways because throughout your entire life you’ve been able to work through problems very easily, you’ve been trained to do so. And we all grew up on the same kind of music, so we all have the same vision for the band. Maybe the con is that we spend way more time together than other bands that aren’t brothers so that might get a little frustrating at times. But I think the pros outweigh the cons for sure. On The Move Mag : I heard that Sia took part in discovering you. Could you tell us a bit more about this? Ryan Met: Adam and I were in a class at Columbia University in New York City. We were in a class and we decided to tweet the video of our song “I’m Ready” to different celebrities and this was after like 8 years of absolutely no success so this was our last chance, and one of the last artists we tweeted was Sia and she found it and retweeted it and private messaged us saying “come meet me at my hotel for a brunch in New York City”. So we went to go have brunch with Sia, we talked a lot and she introduced us to people in the industry.

« our first goal when we’re writing our own stuff is TO do something really unique »

Ryan Met: Oh that’s a good question! I think when we write for other artists we really try to put ourselves in their shoes and we do research about what’s been going on in their life, did they just have a baby, did they just break up with someone and we try to figure out what kind of feelings they’re having, what kind of song would translate. The process is different when we’re writing an AJR song. I think our first goal when we’re writing our own stuff is: let’s do something really unique, let’s try and write about something that has never been written about before in pop music. So there are kind of two different processes. On The Move Mag : Do you have a specific way to proceed when you want to start working on a new song? Ryan Met: I think it’s completely random. It’s just the three of us writing in our living room in New York City and the way a song would start could be anything just from a melody to a word or production idea like a certain drum sound. We have a new album called “The Click” and I think every single song on there started a different way so it will be completely random and anyone of us could come up with an idea and bring it to the group. On The Move Mag : Your new album «The Click» has been released a couple of weeks ago. What were the inspirations behind it? Jack Met: I think there were a lot of inspirations, one of the biggest themes of the album is the idea of growing up and kind of not wanting to grow up a little bit too

On The Move Mag : How did you start being serious about making music together? Jack Met: We’ve been working on this band for like twelve years now. We started off performing in the streets and in the parks of New York City and that’s how we started twelve years ago! We just kept working on it. At Columbia we weren’t studying music, we wanted to just kind of brainchild and study different things. On The Move Mag : You have produced a number of different tracks for different artists such as Andy Grammer or Rachel Platten. How does your producing process differ from the process of putting together your original music?

AJR’s debut album «Living Room» was released in 2015.

much, to kind of keep those memories of when you were a kid because to us that’s just the greatest feeling ever. We still live in the same house that we grew up in with our parents and we just like it so much because it just reminds us of being young and having no responsibilities so a lot of the songs are about that.

of just surprising the audience. I think he’d be very memorable to work with.

Ryan Met: Oh yeah totally! And then other concepts on the album are just little commentaries on social life, like weird norms of society. We have a song about low attention spans, like how society can really seem to focus on one thing, we have a song about dramas, how everyone gets caught up in dramas and the most kind of unimportant problems. So it’s just a lot of weird ideas that haven’t been written about before in music.

Jack Met: In the US, we had a tour a couple months ago, our first ever headline tour and the whole tour sold out and we are about to go back to the US and play another one even bigger and that one is about to sell out as well which is very cool because for ten years we never sold out one show, let alone a tour, until this year. I think that memory alone is so special to us because our work really does pay off and it helps us remember that while we’ve been actually working for ten years, it actually meant something.

On The Move Mag : What is the main difference between this one and your debut album «Living Room»? Ryan Met: I think for “Living Room” the main focus was production, like how crazy and how new can we get with production and I think we achieved that, according to our fans at least, who knows! (laughs) But I think we created a lot of new sounds for the album and for “The Click” we focused on the lyrics because we heard songs like Mike Posner’s “I Took A Pill In Ibiza” and that started a whole new category of music where people are being so honest with their lyrics and we just loved it so much so we just wanted to make our whole album kind of like that. On The Move Mag : Talking about production, is there an artist you’d like to produce music for?

On The Move Mag : You’ve toured a lot with different kinds of artists. What was your best memory from tour?

« we all grew up on the same kind of music, so we have the same vision for the band » On The Move Mag : If you had to convince people to listen to your music, what would you say? Jack Met: Oh man! Maybe that we make all the music just the three of us, we write and produce it all in our living room in New York City and maybe just that our goal is to write songs about a lot of things that have never been written about before. You’ve never heard this kind of music before, that should intrigue people!

Jack Met: Probably someone with a crazy amazing voice that’s different than ours like Beyoncé or something, that’d be really fun! On The Move Mag : What are you listening to the most at the moment? Jack Met: Miley Cyrus’ song “Malibu”, we really like that one! We heard a really good French song the other day, “Mamamia” from Ridsa! And we heard Tal, she’s good! Oh and what’s that song “Les Champs”? (starts singing) Aux Champs-Elysées! On The Move Mag: (laughs) that’s a French classic! Have you got some dream collaborations? Jack Met: I think Kanye West would be really cool, he’s really crazy and you never know what he’s going to do next, I think that’s such an amazing part of music, kind

WHAT’S UP GAËL FAURE, FOLK AND POETRY

IN FRANCE ? THE UNTAMED VOICE OF LEA PACI She may look innocent and young, but Lea Paci is not the one to let her voice be tempered.

French people may have known him on TV but he doesn’t look or sound anything like his Nouvelle Star self anymore... At 18, Gaël Faure participated in the TV musical competition. He was charming, had a great voice and made his way through the semi-finale. Obviously, a lot of proposals for musicals, tv shows or singles came along. But that sudden experience under the spotlight made him realize it was not what he was looking for. So, he took a step back and took the time to build himself and his sound, promising he would come back on the scene when he was ready. After releasing a first album that came quite unnoticed in 2008 «Jardin De Villes», he made his true debut in 2014, way more mature and ready to make his mark onto the industry. With «De Silences En Bascules», the young singer, songwriter and musician proposed a true musical journey, drawing inspirations from the nature of its native lands of Ardèche to the dreamt landscapes of Island. His unique warm and sharp voice is served by a melodic folk, at times uplifting, at times touching. Surrounding himself with some of the best writers in French music as Tété, Ben Ricour or Barcella, Gaël Faure came up with a powerful album in which every word seems to be chosen so carefully they become small pieces of poetry put on music. His clear diction makes it all the way more striking. Always wanting to give more sense to his art, Gaël Faure took part these last months in the Colibris’ movement, fighting for ecological and humanist matters along with author Pierre Rabhi and several other French artists. We’ve been waiting for three years to hear the successor of «De silences en bascules» and it might be on its way. Gaël Faure released a brand new single a few weeks ago. Named «La Saison», the cheerful track is shaded with soft electronica : a refreshing turn that leaves us curious for the future.

At only 20, the singer gives everything she has to her music and pours her deepest emotions in her lyrics : joy, anger, sadness, pain, heartbreak and forgiveness - she never seems to stop pushing her own limits. At a very young age, she took drama classes which made her love to be on stage grow bigger and bigger years after years. Not really into music at first and definitely destined to become a singer, she found her passion for music after a painful heartbreak. Art then became a sort of therapy and an evidence. Lea’s debut album, «Chapitre 1» is an open book full of simple melodies, pop and electro touches with a lot of maturity. The first single «Adolescente Pirate» is melancholic yet full of promises. Yes, Lea wrote the first chapter of her career but there are still many more to come.

HER : A SOPHISTICATED AND TIMELESS DUO

TIBZ, THE NEW HOPE OF FRENCH MUSIC His name is Thibault Godillat but everyone calls him «Tibz». You may not know his name, but in France, you surely know his song «Nation». For years, Tibz was the opening act for Louane and Vianney, but now it’s time for the young singer to follow his very own musical path. They were originally part of the Popopopops, school band which became one stellar revelation around 2010. Somewhere between pop-rock and electro new wave at that time, Victor Solf and Simon Carpentier decided to go their own way, as a duet, when the band parted ways.

Influenced by some of the greatest artists as Renaud, Bob Dylan or the French singer Francis Cabrel, Thibault launched his career with his debut single «On n’est pas bien là ?» and made waves across the country. Since then, he made sensation with «Nation».

With their sensual, chic sentimental pop, Her must be the most sophisticated act on the current french scene. Their name says a lot about the main theme of their music : women. «We are feminists» they are not afraid to tell.

The hit song has an irresistible rhythm, Tibz’s refreshing voice, the guitar chord and the children’s choir make us want to dance and sing along. As well as the lead single, the whole album is full of hope and positivity and it feels just right and authentic.

Fantasy, encounter, relation, passion, need, union, accomplishment...In their first self-production «Her Tape #1» in 2015, they drew a different stage of relationship in every song, like a full story. Their lyrics are very intimate, drawn from personal experiences. They also use parts of speeches given by women (Emma Watson, Nina Hagen or the mother of one of them) about their condition into their tracks. These talking bits give the whole tracklist a kinetic side. They actually cultivate their visual universe with precision and a lot of taste. Through their look first, they channel the classy imagerie of soul icons from the 60s like James Brown or Otis Redding mixed with the contemporanean cold charisma of english duo Hurts. An eerie balance between the old and the new that also pours out of their music videos, as in their latest beautiful «Blossom Roses». Last April, Solf and Carpentier came back with «Her Tape #2» : four tracks with spoken intro and interlude. When «Swim» is infused with upbeat synths and federative choirs, «Queens» plays with the most accurate silences, precise instrumental touches and deep hip-hop vibes. Same recipe, only bolder... and mastered. We look forward to chapter 3 !

This is just the beginning for Tibz and we can already see that the future holds a bright career for this young French singer.

OTM TEAM PAM

editorial director I spend most of my time apologizing to my favorite streaming platform for ripping off their «add to playlist» button. When i’m not looking for new artists to talk to you about I drown myself in a sea containing a mix of old R&B and punk-rock sound. Sometimes I go to concert venues more often than I go to bed and I listen to music even when I sleep. I’ll be probably deaf in 40 years but knowing you’ll discover new artists through this mag makes everything worthwhile.

ELODIE

writer Longtime writer for OTM, I love being able to talk about my favourite tracks and artists online. Got a passion for pop, indie and rock bands, Harry Potter and photography. You can usually find me at venues, front row, next to the following curly girl. Spending way too much money on those travels and gigs. But, we only got one life, better get the most out of it !

CORALINE

graphic designer, writer

Wannabe architect, musical writer by passion. I am in love with matter, music and words. Drunk with british indie-rock and popfolk. I guess my wildest dream would be designing and building a gig venue, for which I would decide the opening line-up. In the meantime, I am the curly girl with too much hair, front row.

LUDIVINE

writer

Who am I, in a nutshell? Daydreamer, traveler at heart, sees beauty in everything, concert addict, Germany lover. Music is my escape route and my best friend. Fun fact: I actually own a guitar since I was 4 but I don’t know how to play. I am also the girl that’s like “Hey you gotta listen to this!” and 2 hours later we’re still on YouTube… Oops!

LENA

writer

Meet the youngest of the crew ! Aspiring music journalist and communication student, I spend most of my free time surrounded by books and hot chocolate. Basically obsessed with british pop music and indie artists, if you’re looking for me you’ll probably find me singing my heart out at a concert. if i could turn back time, i’d definitely pop to the Panic! At The Disco show in Chicago in 2006.
