ON THE MOVE MAG - SEPTEMBER 2018

«

In the current music industry where radios, TV and streaming platforms are the big players deciding to spread the word about an artist (or not), it becomes more and more difficult for new artists to get their music heard if they don’t meet some criteria. It takes time, it takes patience, it takes talent but above all it takes a lot of hard work. At On The Move Magazine, we give a particular attention to talent no matter where you come from, your musical genre, the amount of followers/views/fans you have got. We don’t talk quantity, we talk quality. We talk quality because we love music with the big M. We carefully choose the artists you’ll discover in this magazine to introduce you to «la crème de la crème». You’ll find big names, you’ll find unknown names. You’ll love what you’ll listen to, or maybe you will hate it but at least, you’ll give our artists a chance. Because at the end of the day, every success story began with a chance given. »

REWIN EVERYTHING YOU MISSED AND NEED TO KNOW music video OF THE MONTH

SAM FENDER DEAD BOYS

Here is one voice used loud on a crucial matter! In his latest single, British sensation Sam Fender tackles the issue of toxic masculinity standards. The pressure put on young generation allows a worissome rate of depressions and suicides to spread all around the world. Directed by Vincent Haycock (Florence & The Machine, Calvin Harris...), the modest yet striking video for « Dead Boys » sends out a necessary alarm signal but also ends up on a hopeful note, finding solace in the support and love of one another.

FAREWELL, ARETHA At 76, the Queen of Soul lost her battle against pancreatic cancer, 41 years after the death of the King of Rock, Elvis Presley. 18 Grammy Awards, 75 million records sold, being the first female performer inducted into the R o c k and Roll Hall of Fame, Aretha paved the way for other musicians to follow and inspired millions. Today, she’ll be remembered as one of the most beautiful voices of the music industry.

SAVE THE DATE She was Australia’s best kept secret. Like a diamond in the rough, Tash Sultana is one of a kind. Live, she takes the stage alone and controls her own sound, vision and faith. Within minutes, the singer captures your soul and leaves you speechless, playing a two-hour set filled with instrumentally fueled creation. Her whole European tour is now sold out but do not miss your chance to see her live if you can ! Live at the Olympia, Paris on September 25th

The trench era Blurryface is back. If you’ve been a fan of Twenty One Pilots for a while, you probably already know of this story, created by Josh Dun and Tyler Joseph. Well, according to the drummer, it seems that the Trench era will be a continuation of the previous one. Introduced by the single «Jumpsuit», the music video is full of hints connecting the two stories. From the painted neck to the burned car, could the hidden messages in the band’s website lead to bigger clues? What is DIMA? Who is Clancy? Surrounded by the banditos, could Josh also be Tyler’s guardian angel? It seems that the first three videos are the beginning of something much bigger, tackling subjects like mental health, depression, and other important issues. Clique, it’s time to wake up and find the answers.

HAEVN Behind the ethereal sound of HAEVN hide two musicians as different as brilliantly complementary. Jorrit Kleijnen, originally a soundtrack composer, and Marijn van der Meer, former advertising worker and singersongwriter… Chance brought the first’s textured melodies and the second’s envelopping vocals and lyrics together. A match made in heaven which finds its full expression in their 14-track album « Eyes Closed ». Jorrit and Marijn took the time to tell us about their striking debut, the long and necessary making of their record and also, the values they defend through their musical project. Passion, integrity, generosity... let’s meet HAEVN.

O

n The Move : Hi Jorrit, hi Marijn ! Thanks for having us. For our readers to understand your work as HAEVN, can you explain how you started in music ? Jorrit Kleijnen : Our band is actually one big coincidence in its start. I’ve always been playing piano and I have been a composer for advertising and films. I have been doing that for ten years now. Actually, three years ago, I composed music for an ad about a blind skate-boarder. He was blind but he could go down that skating ramp on his intuition. It was quite a special moment and I wrote music for this, on a piano-ish vibe. I got a call from the advertisement director, saying « You made a great piece of music but we think it should be a pop song. » I said « Well, I can’t sing, I don’t write pop songs. I think in film music. So it is not possible. » He said « Well, I know someone who can sing very well, and who write pop songs. » At first, I was a little bit afraid of the collaboration, of that feeling of being forced to collaborate with someone. One hour later, I had Marijn on the phone. He said «Hi, I just heard your piano piece and I sang something to it.» Marijn van der Meer : Yeah, I got this amazing music video, with this guy going on a ramp without even seeing. I got goosebumps. I ran upstairs in my little studio and I sang whatever came in my mind. I sent it back to Jorrit just to see if he liked it. And then, he was really amazed by it. Actually, I thought «Who is this crazy guy yelling?» He was like «I love this!» And that was something that we did only out of intuition, we didn’t know each other at that moment. Which is really nice because something new happened when we collaborated. We started making music together... Jorrit Kleijnen : As friends, actually! Without any goal. We were just very charmed by the influence we had on each other. Because Marijn at first was this guy on a guitar, like -if I may say- the cliché type of singer-songwriter. And I was the cliché film-composer working with orchestras but never with a voice. It was really sort of a chemical reaction who flew in when put together! And the funny thing is that I was working with other musicians but that was also very professional, you always have to pay an invoice at the end of the day, right? But this was really a musical friendship because we’re very different, we’re very good friends now, but I think Marijn would have never been friends with me if it was at a bar, you know what I mean... On The Move : In terms of personality, what do you find in each other that is complementary ?

Marijn van der Meer : I think I am the calmer guy of the two. And Jorrit is more the guy of the initiative. When we got a call from a big car agency that wanted to use our song, Jorrit said «We have to spend that money to start a band and record this song properly with a good producer and stuff». And I, on the other side, wanted to save it. But he said «Let’s use all this money to go further.» That’s what I really like about him. He had been his own boss for 7 or 8 years. And I still had my job at an agency. And in the middle, we meet. Some times he wants to spend everything (laughs) and I’m like «No, let’s try to do the small shows first». We’re pretty different but it works! Jorrit Kleijnen : On the other way around, Marijn’s calm inspires me. Already from a musical perspective, when he sings. I think Marijn is so incredibly good at what he does that we can allow ourselves to also just do that. Many have to pull out tricks and stuff but from a musical perspective, Marijn is really the hand over your shoulder saying « It’s gonna be alright you know ? » I’m always busy in my mind. He brings calm to me but if we would only pull up our shoulders saying « fine », we wouldn’t be here in Paris doing a concert. So, it’s a perfect balance! I think you can only collaborate very well if you’re either completely the same or you’re different enough to be complementary. We’re definitely that last possibility.

« If A SONG doesn’t give us the chills we got from each other when we met musically, we Don’t go further » Marijn van der Meer On The Move : Your stage name is also ambivalent. « HAEVN » is a mix between the words « heaven » and « haven ». Why did you choose it ? Marijn van der Meer : When our first song came out « Where The Heart Is », we got emails from different people saying « it sounds like heaven » and « it sounds like coming home » and we decided to get these two words together in one new word « HAEVN ». It’s a bit of a weird way to write it but at first, it really worked for us because in Holland, there was a certain mystery around us, everyone knew our songs but they didn’t know the band, they didn’t know it was from Holland, which was also a nice thing... We liked that idea of not being too Dutch, of sounding international.

11

Jorrit Kleijnen : Even the producer from London Grammar which we worked with emailed us saying « Are you going to London or should I come to Denmark? » He thought we were from there (laughs) And when you pronounce « HAEVN » , there is already an expectation from the music, right? And you can adjucate Google also... Because when typing « HAEVN » it would instantly correct you and redirect you to « heaven » and say « you mispelled! » but now, if you type « HAEVN » you get only us as an answer! It took a while but we did it. And sometimes I joke and say « How many Facebook likes would we have add if we had a more common or simple name? » Because there is this thing, if you know how to write it, you can feel part of a club, a secret, this little band HAEVN... So it was a little bit bold to go for that name.

« WHILE MAKING THE ALBUM, we became more and more fighters for patience » Jorrit Kleijnen On The Move : Your debut album « Eyes Closed » came out last May, three years after your meeting. Why did you took all this time while other artists would have surfed on the first single’s success ? Marijn van der Meer : It was important for us to find our own sound. Because in our career, it was the other way around, we had this song out that became a huge hit and we had to think « Okay, what is our sound ? We just made this one song together. » So we had to find our own sound and the best way to do that was to make an album together. So we did, and it took two and a half years. It took a while, everyone was talking about the momentum. It was the word that we got every day. « You have to bring more music. It should have already been out yesterday» but Jorrit said « If something is good, it is also good in two years. If we have something out now which isn’t that good, then people will think it was a one shot. » So that’s why it took a while. Jorrit Kleijnen : We also needed that for ourselves because we didn’t know who we were. We only knew that when we are together, we resonate and we make nice music. But we didn’t have a clue how we would sound if we had thirteen tracks. I can give a lot of examples of Dutch artists at least that have been releasing just singles, and if you listen to them, one after each other, you still can’t tell what the artist stands for because it

is just fragmentary, it is just moments. During that process actually, we became more and more fighters for patience. I think we are the examples of being brave, against the stream enough not to go along with all this fast stuff. And that’s why we called it « Eyes Closed », I remember us being in the studio with another producer and I closed my eyes to actually be able to feed back better. I thought « If you just shut down one of your senses, the others become more intense ». And we had calls from radios asking « Can we have the intro be shorter? » and we said « No, it can’t. » In 2018, it seems like people are not willing to just get in the mood of the songs. Your instagram films can only be 30 seconds, everything is just shorter. On radio, they’re showing you 5 seconds clips of the songs that will come in the next ten minutes. Are you f*cking kidding me? And maybe, we are old men but the thing is we both had a good job, we are not in this for the money so we had the sort of madness to say « f*ck you all, we’re gonna do it our way » and if you are one of these few people who wants time, patience, who is ready to take time, then please, join this HAEVN club. If you wanna keep on living the fast life, that’s fine too. Marijn van der Meer : The nice thing is that in the Spotify place, you can see that people are actually listening to the whole album and not just to one song picked out of it. Of course, all these songs are also in playlists but they can see that people are just going through the whole thing, hopefully with their eyes closed. Normally, with new artists, this is only two or three songs having millions of streams and the other ones having 100 000. And you can just see it is going equally on « Eyes Closed ». We even had a phone call from someone in the UK saying « This is a very rare thing to happen ». On The Move : There are a lot of themes tackled in « Eyes Closed » : relationships, nostalgia, choices, regrets, vulnerability, letting go, hopes and dreams... Very human and timeless feelings overall. Is it what music should be about to you ? Marijn van der Meer : For us, it is. It is called « Eyes Closed » because we want the listeners to make his or her own images with the music. We don’t tell « this song is about this or this », that’s why the lyrics are sometimes less clear. We actually like that you can have your own interpretation of the songs. It’s the same when I listen to albums and I think « this song is about this » but the next year, I think differently. It is about your own perception of the songs. And that’s what we embraced and what we really like.

13

Jorrit Kleijnen : We don’t pretend that there is one universal interpretation of the song. Some writers have this thing « we don’t tell you but this is what you should actually be making out of it » and we don’t even wanna go that far. It’s like we just put you in a van and drive you to a mountain in Island, or in the middle of the night in the streets of New-York. That’s really important that we don’t try to push you anywhere. It’s about you, if we can help you feel a certain way, then it’s the greatest thing. We don’t want to adjucate your feelings.

« We WANT THE LISTENERS TO have THEIR own interpretation of the songs » Marijn van der Meer On The Move : You two have backgrounds tied to visuals, either as an advertising man (Marijn) or a film-composer ( Jorrit). Which links do you draw between music and visuals ? Jorrit Kleijnen : The cover album was so important for us. The funny thing is that we are music makers not video makers. But we are as picky and as thorough about everything, the whole visual aspects. I think you’re right, it’s in the roots of both of our careers. And I think, at least for me, it has established a certain mindset, as well. I need images to trigger me musically. I’m not the type of guy to just sit and write music. Volvo for example, they’ve got beautiful imagery of cars but only 15% of the time, you see an actual car, the rest is people, going though the city. And I would make ten times faster music for that than me sitting anywhere because my mind is like trained on making music that way. And also our mind is trained on catchiness. I won’t say everything we make is super catchy but it always leads to it somewhere. Marijn van der Meer : And we try to find goosebumps. If it doesn’t give us the chills we got from each other when we first met musically. Then we won’t go further with the song. Jorrit Kleijnen : That’s also a curse and a blessing because we made « Where The Heart Is » when we weren’t even in the same room and it raised the bar so high, we said to each other that that was the bar we had to cross for everything we would make together from now on.

On The Move : You’ve released a series of videos illustrating your album, where people from all around the world tell their stories in front of the camera, with each track as the background. Where does this idea come from ? Jorrit Kleijnen : It was a collaborative idea with the label. We were really looking for a vehicle helping us carrying out the message « It’s about your story, not ours ». And I think it was the most obvious and best example to underline that. It was really hard to find a format again, « a fast format ». All these interviews were 45 minutes actually. They were cut down but we also didn’t wanna have the feeling that they were cut down so it was a very hard process. But we are pretty happy with the result. But being very vulnerable telling you that here, I’m not so happy with the result of the Facebook campaign. It is not shared that much as we hoped for. It is again another example of how fast time is going. You know what I mean? This campaign is demanding a certain awareness of the viewers you know. And if you don’t have it, you’re just « Ho, someone telling about their lives... » then you’re zapping it. Marijn van der Meer : But it is also made for the people that are diving into it, like you did. That’s really cool! It is the same with our name. If you want to find it, you have to be prepared. If you want to find more about this, you can dive deeper. On The Move : What can we expect from HAEVN live ? Jorrit Kleijnen : If you would have a cross reference with a dutch shows, you’d say « hey, the guys are more chilled ». In the Netherlands, we’re playing venues from 500 to 2000 people and tonight, in Paris, it is of course a lot smaller but I think, it gives me more chills, and I think you’re going to see guys who are enjoying (of course, we are always) but tonight, it is more intimist, and I hope that the songs will speak to you and you will have a very constant line with Marijn’s vocal but also we try to take differente routes. Marijn van der Meer : The most beautiful compliment we’ve ever had was from a woman saying « I’ve been crying and I’ve been dancing and I had never been at a concert where I did both on the evening. » If only a little bit of that would happen tonight, it would make us very proud and thankful for that. No pressure (laughs).

WALLOWS

AMERICA’S NEW FAVORITE BAND

WALLOWS (verb): To indulge in an unrestrained way in something that creates a pleasurable sensation. Yes, this is probably how you could describe Wallows’ sound. Something you, somehow, can’t get enough of with an incredible and untamed energy radiating through all the songs. Suddenly you’re 15 and listening to your favourite band, the sound bursting through the speakers and some Paramore posters are up on the walls. Well, if you’re missing this time, don’t worry because Wallows are here to bring back the alt-rock scene to its former glory. Despite their young age, the three boys -Dylan Minette, Braeden Lemasters and Cole Preston have been playing music together since they were 11, starting out at a San Fernando Valley music program, Join the Band. Almost ten years later, the trio just released their debut work on Atlantic Record «Spring», a collection of 6 pop-rock songs wearing the colors of their inspirations. Whether you like classic rock’n’roll like The Beatles or Led Zeppelin, alt-indie like Arctic Monkeys or some more modern vibes like Frank Ocean and Tyler, The Creator, Wallows’ fresh and new sound revitalizes rock music for a whole new generation. “We don’t have any particular musical style. We incorporate whatever we happen to be listening to and are inspired by. It all depends on what the song requires.” Their debut work «Spring» captures that eclectism. At times, you feel like you’re listening to an old Bowie’s classic, mixed with a bit of The Smiths. Their first single, «Pictures of Girls» is a bold and daring statement, almost as if the young boys wanted to immediately show what they were capable of and that they weren’t here to play some nice love songs to a bunch of teenage girls. They might only be in their 20’s but their sound is ferociously vintage and they’re definitely aiming for the impredictable, always going the extra mile to find the perfect arrangement.

Reflecting on their youth and the changes that go along, as well as the problem you may encounter as a teenager, their music is mainly inspired by that tender period between the innocence of childhood and the responsibility of maturity and adulthood. In «Pictures Of Girls», the band tells a story of a young man that doesn’t want to leave his suburban life to go to the big city, longing for a girl who’s already moved on. Through their lyrics and music, the trio wants to be real and relatable to many, tackling subjects like girls and discovering the world surrounding you. Even if Dylan and Braeden both have their respective acting careers to manage, music seems to stay their number one priority : “The one thing you can’t argue is how hard we’ve worked for so many years. We could have given up at any point along the way. We take our music very seriously.” For now, Wallows is on a mission to bring back the golden era of classic rock’n’roll.

Listen if you are a fan ofClassic rock’n’roll sound like The Beatles. Somehow, the trio reminds us of another band that brought us back to this golden era : The Young Veins. Same attitude, same vintage yet modern sound, same energy; Dylan, Braeden and Cole can definitely compete with Ryan Ross!

One song to listen to«1980s Horror Film» for its minimalist sound and soft sound. You’ll feel at peace while listening to this track. A guitar and a tambourine, it’s all it takes to win our heart over.

JHART

Successful songwriter turned full-fledged solo artist

Just like Julia Michaels, Benny Blanco or Teddy Geiger, JHart is the next one to turn his prosperous career as a songwriter into a hopefully successful career as a solo act. After penning some tracks for Jason Derulo, Martin Garrix, Charlie Puth or The Vamps, JHart is now ready to take over the music scene under his own name. You might not be familiar with the name JHart, but it’s more than likely you’ve jammed to his work. With tracks written for the likes of Justin Bieber, Keith Urban, Usher, Kygo, Rita Ora, and Camila Cabello, James Abrahart, AKA JHhart, is clearly a pop radio mainstay. He’s already amassed GRAMMY nominations and multiplatinum hits as a songwriter and producer. Now it’s the UK-born and Georgia-raised singer’s turn with the spotlight, as he is set to release his upcoming project, Vol 1- Songs from Therapy, later this year. It will be his first release as a solo artist. In talking about his album, Abrahart explains his experience with therapy: « After a few months, I pitched my therapist the idea of recording our sessions with the goal of writing my record and he agreed to it. Therapy also helped me get over a fear of performing that stopped me from pursuing an artist project for most of my adult life. » Abrahart has written for other musicians for about 7 years now, and now that his time has come to step into the spotlight, he had some self requirements for his own project. He explains that it must « be creatively satisfying, be experimental in inception, and more than anything else feel like an honest reflection of myself and whatever I was going through. » To hold us over, JHart released the soul-pop « Put It to Bed » earlier this summer, with a steamy, futuristic video to match. The song was written and produced by Abrahart and Nick Ruth, who has worked with pop darlings, such as Carly Rae Jepsen, 5 Seconds of Summer and Kelly Clarkson. The track, characterized by soaring vocals, cinematic strings and slow-simmering bassline, was met by critical acclaim, Billboard hailing it as both triumphant and danceable. What more could you want in a dark bar after a few drinks (or dancing around your room after a half bottle of wine)? Abrahart sings about a lover that is both hostile and seductive: « I wanna touch you all over, you wanna talk till we’re black and blue… Why can’t we put, put it to bed? Let me get close to you, I know you want it too. »

The video for « Put It to Bed » came out in August. With Chuck David Willis as director, Abraham delivered a story that matches the lyric’s narrative, but giving it an interesting, appropriately cinematic spin. Keeping in the theme of therapy, this time of a unique variety, Abrahart is at a doctor’s appointment. The doctor explains what will follow after he drinks a neon green concoction that puts him under. He enters a simulation, where, as the doctor explains, « you can be anyone… they can be anyone. » We enter his mind into the problem at stake. What follows is an upkeep of the posh sci-fi theme and a sexy portrayal of a distant couple, with the simulation and reality worlds playing off one another. In talking to Paper, Abrahart illustrated his and Willis’ brainstorm process. He said they learned about a form of therapy where people resolve problems by thinking about their problems from a secondary perspective. With a Black Mirror spin on the concept, the video was born. It’s about time Abrahart got his turn. He’s an inspiring creative that has already more than proven himself and finally seems to found his confidence to prove his own place in the music industry. Abrahart said, « When I started going to therapy, I noticed a change in my ability to be present creatively. »We’re glad he found his way and with 2018 on the downhill, it is only a matter of time before we hear more from him.

Listen if you are a fan ofSeductive pop R&B delivered by the lovechild of Frank Ocean and Justin Bieber.

One song to listen to-

« Put It To Bed » which is JHart’s streamy debut single and a great way to get into his universe.

THE PITCHFORKS

ROCK MUSIC COMING FROM THE GUTS

Once in a while, you happen to be scrolling through your Spotify library, trying to avoid all the same bands and songs you’ve been listening to for the past weeks, months, years and stumble upon a track that catches you from the very first notes and sparks your interest. Let us introduce you to The Pitchforks, your new rock obsession. Throughout its history, the United Kingdom has produced numerous musical creations. From pop music to the awakening of the rock scene, it’s no secret that some of the greatest bands of our generation were born from the British invasion and the new wave of British pop-rock music. Take The Beatles, Arctic Monkeys or more recently Ed Sheeran and Jorja Smith, they’ve all big hits across the world and it’s no surprise that they share the same nationality. Growing up in the Rhondda Valleys, The Pitchforks are a young four-piece indie rock band consisting of William on vocals, Ethan on guitar, Alex on drums and Callum on bass. Friends since primary school, the four kids started playing together a few years ago and haven’t stopped ever since. Inspired by the same old school bands, they spent the last couple of years trying to figure out their sound, developing and learning from each other, finally aiming for a raw and offhand vibe, creating a music coming from their guts and youth. In 2016, The Pitchforks released their first single «Headlock» and quickly after, the band was chosen as one of the ten bands from South Wales to be coached and developed as part of the Forté Project in 2017. This project aims to discover the new and upcoming bands and help them to unveil their talent and improve their skills. Strong from this experience and ready to take on the world, 2018 saw the four guys supporting some of their favorite bands on tour such as Redfaces, Anteros and Pretty Vicious. Earlier this year, they even played their first headline show at Cardiff ’s Clwb Ifor Bach which was sold out. Crowded by fans, their first single «Headlock» still got a massive response and so did the new and fresh release! Their most recent work - «Waste Of A Day» is as impressive as it’s good. Usually, Ethan, William, Callum and Alex like to workshop the songs live, make them evolve, see how the

public respond to the beats and rhythm and then adjust them to make them perfect. But for this one, they just decided to go with the flow and see how it goes. Written a few days before the recording session, this single impresses by the maturity contained in William’s vocals and the pure feeling of rock music coming from their guts. The Pitchforks played a live session on BBC Radio Wales in early August where they played their possible new single ‘Write the Date Down’ for the first time, only a week after writing it. They were also chosen to take part in BBC Horizons alongside some of the best and brightest artists in Wales. Their plans for the future are now to record new songs they’ve written and play them live at various shows, hopefully reaching a much larger audience. As the band would say themselves, «We keep learning, we keep writing and we hope people can get to hear us.». But the future is surely bright for these young boys.

Listen if you are a fan ofYoung bands that want to be heard and step into the spotlight, full of envy and passion. At times, The Pitchforks remind us of The Sherlocks, Pretty Vicious or even Trampolene.

One song to listen to«Waste Of a Day» for its glorious and upbeat feelings and energy. Tremendous guitars, powerful percussion and a beat that will fill your ears and soul, this song feels a lot more mature than the rest of their work yet and let you eager to hear more of it!

SAMM HENSHAW His name might sound familiar to you if you’re closely following the British music scene. Coming straight from London, the 24 year-old singer is now ready to really make his mark in the music industry. After opening for artists such as James Bay or Chance The Rapper, the soul man jumped into another adventure with Epic Records in America to start another chapter in his career. Put on your headphones and sit down while we’re introducing Samm Henshaw to you.

O

n The Move: Thank you Samm for being with us today. For those who don’t know you yet, could you please tell us how you started music? Samm Henshaw: Of course! At first, I would play in Church and stuff like that. I was always playing instruments and I was always interested in that. There was always music played around the house. At the age of 4, I saw a lot of people in the Church playing so I wanted to start playing drums and I think that when I was about 13-14, I ended up learning piano, and later guitar and later on I started to sing and went to study it at university. It’s kind of always been in my life. On The Move: So you knew you would eventually end up in music? Samm Henshaw: You know what’s weird, I mean I knew I was good at it, so I kind of did it as a cop-out because I didn’t think that I was good at anything else but I didn’t expect myself to do any of those things that I am doing. I studied music in order to be a teacher. I ended up meeting my manager through it and here I am.

« The British music scene is very vibrant » On The Move: You’re originally from London. What do you think about the music scene over there? Samm Henshaw: It’s good and it’s doing very well at the moment. There’s a diversity in British music that doesn’t exist in other places because there are so many different cultures and different ranges of things. It’s a very vibrant scene. On The Move: You recently signed with Epic Records in America and are spending more time on the American territory than before. Does it help you to shape your music or to take your music into another direction? Samm Henshaw: Since I got signed here I think my mind has been opened to the scope and the possibilities of where things could go. I’m thinking a lot bigger now than I was before. When I was in London, I mean I still live there (laughs), but my full process was a lot slower and smaller than the way it is now with Epic.

On The Move: Can you tell us the story behind « How Does It Feel?» ? Samm Henshaw: I was in a session with two friends of mine, one being Josh Grant who produced the song, and we were going through a bunch of ideas. We went out to get some food and came back and I started playing the chords of « How Does It Feel? » and started singing the line « how does it feel to be loved » and everyone was kind of like « what is that? that was cool but where are you trying to go with that? ». Then I thought about how « How Does It Feel? » could be about someone trying to understand the concept of love and in doing so, he or she meets different people and then someone would say that love is like kindness, patience, love is like those positive things. Then you look the other way and see that someone’s actions is the complete opposite of what someone has just said. Basically the idea was that we just like to talk about love, and the reactions to it. On The Move: In this song one of the lyrics is « If I have to buy love, then I don’t really want love ». In our current society, do you think that people really know how it feels to be loved? Samm Henshaw: This is a very good question. Honestly I think to an extent people know, but I think that a lot of people don’t. I think that the people who don’t know are the ones who are screaming « let’s show more love » most of the time. It’s not the case for everyone of course but I’ve been one of those people, that’s why I wrote the song, because I could relate to it. I wouldn’t have spoken about love without living it. I think there’s a lot less of it in our society which is a shame because if there was enough love, the world wouldn’t be the way it is. It would be a much different place. On The Move: You previously toured with James Bay and Chance The Rapper. Did those experiences inspire you and to what extent? Samm Henshaw: James was great. I was a fan from the beginning and I just came out of University so that was great. Seeing everything that he was doing and where he was in his career, that really inspired me. I learned a lot from him, he gives me advice on things when I need it. And Chance, after the tour I came to LA and I was able to go in the studio for a bit and watch him work and see how he does everything and that’s incredible!

On The Move: You’re currently working on new music. What can we expect from it? Is it going to follow the same sound that you’ve done before or do you want to try new things? Samm Henshaw: Yes, we are finishing the album. I have a few songs coming out. It’s probably going to be along the lines of what you’re hearing with « How Does It Feel? », that sort of Hip-hop soulful gospel sound.

« If there was enough love in our society, the world wouldn’t be the way it is »

On The Move: Do you have some collaborations coming up as well? Samm Henshaw: Yes, there are a couple. I can’t tell more about it for now but there are quite a few. On The Move: What are your inspirations for this new music you’re planning on releasing soon? Samm Henshaw: My life, mostly. People’s lives, the things I’ve seen and experienced. The things I’ve been through and the things that people I know have been through. I think this is the most personal music I’ve written, it’s real.

OUR BEST ALBUMS

OF AUGUST Every week of the year, a bunch of records are thrown into the world, portraying the singular influences, universes and sounds of artists. Do you get lost in the numerous releases? On The Move Mag is here to help. This month, as always, we opened our ears and dove into what matters most : music! Whatever genre suits you, you’ll find something new to discover... Here are our favourite albums released in August.

She saw the opportunity and took it. Two years after her third album « Dangerous Woman », the young pop sensation is back with a brand new record, « Sweetener ». As a whole, the 15 tracks are a lot lighter than her previous releases, almost as if Ariana decided and allowed herself to take the things as they come. The lead single « No Tears Left To Cry » was a bold statement and a way to play around with melodies and textures, proving that she’s not a teen artist anymore. Eventually, it takes a few listens to actually get into « Sweetener ». It’s not filled with bangers and memorable tracks, but it’s a whole vibe, one song working with another and creating a whole universe. Channeling a more mature side of her personality, Ariana Grande seems ready to own the queen of pop’s crown.

Top 3 tracks: No Tears Left To Cry, Successful, God Is A Woman

ARIANA GRANDE - SWEETENER

With her fourth album « Queen », the goal of Nicki Minaj was pretty simple : to deliver a « classic hip-hop album that people will never forget ». In order to do so, the American rapper co-produced her new project with Birdman, Ronald « Slim » Williams and Lil Wayne – three prominent figures in the music industry. Then, take a look at the tracklist of the album and here are some big names again! Indeed, Eminem, Lil Wayne, Labrinth, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd or even Swae Lee all joined Nicki Minaj in the creation of « Queen ». The album, composed of 22 songs, is about asserting her power as a woman and an artist in the rap industry. So, if you love Nicki’s legendary outspokenness but also her beautiful singing voice, you won’t be disappointed... at all!

Top 3 tracks: Majesty (feat. Eminem + Labrinth), Ganja Burn, Thought I Knew You (feat. The Weeknd)

NICKI MINAJ - QUEEN

Don’t expect to listen to your regular pop record. With its 13-track and 1 hour long debut album, Tash Sultana throws away radiofriendly archetypes to give full expression to her singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist’s talents and desires. No predefined sound or format, the Aussie musical prodige crosses genres and streches her track’s timing with virtuoso ease. Well, when you can switch between twenty instruments, boulevards of musical experimentations opens up ahead of you. So yes, «Flow State» is eclectic, but each song is equally soulful, organic and lyrically honest - even deeply moving as on «Harvest Love». While her stunning vocal habilities (we witnessed it live!) are timidly displayed at first, it gradually develops into multiple impressive textures. We also particularly love a track with no voice at all -« Seven »- which gives a cinematographic edge to the whole LP. With songs she produced, wrote, performed and arranged by herself, the 23 year-old performer proves how bold, free and amazingly talented she is!

Top 3 tracks : Cigarettes, Seven, Pink Moon

TASH SULTANA - FLOW STATE Led by Mitchy Collins of indie-pop band Oh Honey, with guitarist Jordan Greenwald and drummer Sam Price, California-based trio Lovelytheband has finally released his debut album. While being deeply inspired by Collins’ inner battles, this 16-track bitter sweet record feels like a common catharsis. Being listed in Billboard’s «10 rock & alternative acts to watch in 2018» list, Lovelytheband tackles themes that each of us have to face at one point in our lives, such as anxiety, loneliness or relationships. The band delivers a simple but effective lyricism on an upbeat sound, and therefore joyful atmosphere: quite a contradictory composition. Their musical landscape is highlighted by the characteristic warmth of the American west coast, with swirling guitars and electronic elements skillfully integrated. Even if the heaviness is always there somehow, we find some graceful rays of light and hope bursting through. Because «finding it hard to smile» doesn’t mean you won’t be smiling at all!

Top 3 tracks: alone time, coachella, your whatever

LOVELYTHEBAND - FINDING IT HARD TO SMILE

Freedom sounds good with Troye Sivan. At only 23, the young pop sensation just dropped his second album, «Bloom». Like a delicate creation, the record is filled with soft love songs and powerful tracks about freedom such as «The Good Side» or «Dance To This». If we had to describe the album in three words we’d probably pick vulnerability, maturity and transparency as Troye isn’t one to be ashamed of talking about his feelings and past experiences as a young gay man: while «Seventeen» speaks about the time he hooked up with older men, «Animal» is an ode to his actual boyfriend, Jacob Bixenman. If you’re looking for more happy and carefree songs then there’s no doubt that «My My My» and «Plum» are the ones for you. Either way, enjoy this pop gem!

Top 3 tracks: Postcard (feat. Gordi), Animal, My My My!

TROYE SIVAN - BLOOM

Let’s thank Jason Mraz for his album « Know » that we can now listen chilling under the sun! This record full of positivity, love and sweetness is already his sixth one and you won’t be disappointed. The 41 year-old American singer was tired of writing sad songs and chose to come back with joyful and lively pop songs as well as ballads with romantic lyrics (« Better With You », « No Plans », « Sleeping To Dream »...), which fit perfectly its colourful cover. You may have already heard the lead single « Have It All », which sounds like a blessing for everyone who listens to it. The song was inspired by conversations with a buddhist monk and is, according to the singer, « a song with a hopeful message to help him move forward ». As for « More Than Friends », it is a great track featuring Meghan Trainor, who just knew she could enjoy and write « an adorable pop song with a guitar » with him. Jason Mraz also demonstrates his rap skills in « Unlonely ». Four years after « Yes! », « Know » is a pure delight.

Top 3 tracks: Let’s See What The Night Can Do, Have It All, More Than Friends (feat. Meghan Trainor)

JASON MRAZ - KNOW Two years after « The Divine Feminine », the young rapper from Pennsylvania unveiled his fifth highly anticipated new LP « Swimming » where he completely detaches himself from this soft and romantic previous release, heavily influenced by his relationship with pop star Ariana Grande. Miller now carries a completely different mood, showing a more mature and honest side of himself. From the atmospheric « Come Back To Earth »to the funk infused « What’s the Use », and the triumphing « 2009 » the rapper manages to navigate through the troubled water of life while reflecting on this growth as an artist and as a human being. This somehow autobiographical album is by far one of his best work to date.

Top 3 tracks : Come Back To Earth, Jet Fuel, What’s The Use

Mac Miller - Swimming

Out of nowhere, Eminem dropped his tenth album « Kamikaze ». Less than a year after the release of « Revival », the Missourian rapper decided to pick on all the people who criticized his latest record. Then, he goes back to basics! Over with pop and rock sonorities, he turns on the angry and impertinent rap from his debut. Name dropping, ego-trip and bad faith… Eminem is clearly not here to make friends, either among politicians, musical critics or fellow artists: « Remember I was here before you and I’ll be here after you make your run-in for you». He even points fingers at fans! Slim Shady seems on edge but clearly keeps artistic control. Dr Dre is back on the production and the collaborations are carefully chosen : Bon Iver, Joyner Lucas, Royce da 5’9” or Jessie Reyez. Most of the tracks are brilliantly crafted and his lyrical gift and perfect flow are intact. Going straight for what he needs to say, his sharp words don’t sound caricatural. The king of fastflow has officially returned and it is probably one of his best albums for a while!

Top 3 tracks: The Ringer, Greatest, Stepping Stone

EMINEM - KAMIKAZE

NAATIONS Coming from different horizons, singer/songwriter Nat Dunn and ex-Van She member and DJ Nicky Night Time joined their forces to create NAATIONS. After collaborating with Gorgon City and Duke Dumont, the duo is ready to take over the EDM scene with their new single “Air and Water, an upcoming EP and a tour across Europe, America and their native Australia. Sit back and discover what NAATIONS has to offer.

O

n The Move : Nicky you were a part of the band Van She and you Nat you co-wrote many successful songs including “FRIENDS” by Marshmello and Anne-Marie. So how did you guys decide to get together and create NAATIONS? Nat Dunn: We have a mutual friend and Nicky saw me singing on one of his Instagram videos. Nicky was like “can I meet your friend Nat?” And we met up and I’d been working on stuff for other artists and some Ministry Of Sound [Records - Ed.] stuff in Australia, in terms of dance music, but not that much and Nicky and I just started writing together on piano in Bondi, in Sydney. Everything we wrote together sounded like one sort of project and it didn’t sound like anything we were doing with anyone else separately, so we thought, hmm this is a vibe.

« Our EP will be a two-part series » Nicky Night Time On The Move: Where does the name of the band come from? Nicky Night Time: Basically we wrote the songs in so many different countries. I was in Paris working on a project and then she was in LA and I was back in Australia and she was back in Australia and then we were in London. It just felt like we were always writing in a different places, instead of kind of getting a little bit out of each area we’re with. So it’s kind of, I don’t know, it’s just two of us and our friend just said, “You guys are like nations. You’re just like all over different nations.” So then, why don’t we just call it NAATIONS? Nat Dunn: We also thought that our dance music doesn’t sound specific to any one area, I guess. We feel like a global, we feel like global citizens. Nicky Night Time: Yeah it’s like a pastiche of everything. Nat Dunn: Yeah, so we like that we kind of take from every continent that we live in. Living in London for 6 months last year definitely made it a different sound come out of us, I guess for certain songs. On The Move: So do you get different inspirations from traveling?

Nat Dunn: Exactly, we are traveling so much, it keeps you culturally… Nicky Night Time: Aware. Nat Dunn: Aware (laughs). And off different humans and behaviors and subcultures and we found that’s really like made the music, and the subject matters in the music. On The Move: What’s your writing process like? Do you guys start thinking together about a song or do you have different ideas and then put them together? Nicky Night Time: Usually we kind of get together by ourselves or with someone else and we, on that day write and mostly get like 80 percent of the song done. Usually in a day though, we’ll get the ideas down. Nat Dunn: I’ll be silently writing things down while he’s making chords. It changes every time, though. On The Move: Could you say that we can’t really define your sound because of the subject of your lyrics, even though it’s mainly electro-infused? Nat Dunn: With the subjects of our songs, I guess. Again, this is the whole, our logo as a team is a drop and a star, and that symbolism is kind of the darkness and the sadness, which is sometimes our heavy subjects of our songs. But then the star is the hope, you know that you always kind of have hope. Things are gonna get better. Things are gonna change. And you can be the change. That’s what the tear and the star symbolize and I think that also in our music the tear represents the subject and then the star represents the upbeat, bright? Beat like dance music side of it where it’s like delivering a sad or heavy message, but in a fun way to get that message through. On The Move: And what are your influences, production-wise? Nat Dunn: Radiohead. Nicky Night Time: I’d say Massive Attack, Madonna, Ray of Light. Radiohead, but also like a lot of newer guys. Literally since the weekend, I’ve been getting into this dude Halal House. It’s really cool, it’s kind of like Turkish influence dance music, which is really really cool. But, It changes all the time. I guess originally it was more Massive Attack-y kind of stuff.

On The Move: When it comes to lyrics, Nat, how different is it to write for other artists and to write for NAATIONS? Nat Dunn: When I’m writing for Marshmello or Anne-Marie or like another artist, I just think they’re my muse at that point and I separate and just kind of my head is in that project. They’re the muse and they’re the vehicle, and so it needs to be really relative to them and their story, so I guess we just talk. And I don’t know if my melodies are always quite pop, but depending on who I am working with and who that muse is at that time, it’s just all about them for me. In my head it’s all about them. And it’s just, it’s like a left and a right brain thing for me with that. It’s like when I’m doing NAATIONS I’m completely… in my own head about issues that are affecting me or my family or my friends or what the country I’m living in, or things that I’ve read or seen in the news. And then when I’m working with an artist, it’s about them. And I just separate the two. But I really enjoy having a muse and not doing all a hundred percent my own artist thing all the time. Like, I love the balance of both. I never not want to do that, you know.

«  We just wanna move people » Nat Dunn On The Move: So for NAATIONS, you get your inspiration from your personal experiences? Nat Dunn: Definitely. You can hear the personal experiences on our record with other artists, as well as their stuff. But it’s more, you know, my opinion sort of sprinkled in there, but I make the main focus about them and their story because that’s what it feels right, that’s what feels right to me and them, you know? On The Move: You have your debut EP coming out very soon, what can you tell us about it? Nicky Night Time: It’s sick. It’s a two-part series. The first one’s Teardrops and second one’s a Star. This is the first one and the next one will probably come out in three months from that release. So I think we have a couple of features on the first one, which we can’t comment on yet. Uh, and then we worked on a few records with Babydaddy from Scissor Sisters and then we’re still sort of writing the next EP, but we sure will finish in the next couple of weeks.

Nat Dunn: But we got so much done and we love working with Babydaddy. And the Scissor Sisters were such a pioneer in dance music, I feel like for their sound… It’s so iconic. And yeah, we just have a lot of respect for them and so it’s been great working with him in New York. The other features on the EP are really exciting, we can’t say anything, but we will soon. On The Move: We’ve heard a rumour about a feature with with Major Lazer. Is that true? Nicky Night Time: Major Lazer! Nat Dunn: Maybe, maybe not. (laughs) Nicky Night Time: We’ll see. On The Move: You said you’re going to release a two-part series EP. Why did you guys decide to just release two EPs, and not just condense everything into one? Nat Dunn: To just be really true to the tear and the star, and that concept of sadness and hope. Nicky Night Time: Also, I think we’re still writing the second one. (laughs) Nat Dunn: I’m so excited to play it on tour, and so we’re going on tour in two weeks so I just wanna get all our songs out before we go play them. On The Move: You’re going to Europe soon to play there for the very first time. Are you excited? Nat Dunn: Yes! We can’t wait. We can’t wait to play in Paris. I can’t wait to play in Germany cause I’ve never been there. Amsterdam, Stockholm. We’re going everywhere. Dublin. On The Move: And so what can we expect from your shows? Nat Dunn: Just expect to engage. Yup. Engage. We just wanna move people. That’s what the live show does, is it’s like you wanna move people, you know make them feel, feel everything, and that’s what we certainly feel when we’re playing live and I definitely feel the engagement. That’s the best part about the live shows.

NIALL HORAN S

ince the beginning of March, Niall Horan has been hitting the road with his first ever solo world tour. Currently in America, the Irish singer-songwriter comes to meet his fans following the success of his debut LP « Flicker » released in October 2017. You’ve missed the show? You want to relive a memorable night? You’re eager to know what to expect from an upcoming date of the « Flicker World Tour »? On The Move was at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles and we give you all the details! Who would have thought, at the time of One Direction, that Niall was going to headline his own world tour? The Irish part of the quintet was frequently labelled as the shyest one. But you just have to see him live to realize that was jumping to a false conclusion. Yes, Niall Horan’s music is characterized by a smooth yet catchy folk sound. Yes, the man carries around an elegant modesty but God knows there can be a lot of charm in being reserved and we witnessed it in real life. The mythical venue was full and people were eagerly waiting for the singer to finally appear on stage. While Niall was getting ready, the country artist Maren Morris decided to offer a very good introduction to the show by showcasing her divine vocals on different tracks from her repertoire including « Hero », « My Church » and of course her latest hit « The Middle » with Zedd and Grey. If you’re not familiar with Maren Morris we highly suggest that you dig into her music, she is as good live as she is on the record! The fans are starting to loose it when Niall Horan finally appears on stage and what’s the best song to start the night on an already suffocating venue than the groovy « On The

Live from Los Angeles Loose »? The fans – on the loose themselves – shout the lyrics as one, and won’t cease to sing along for the entire set. A bright start that Niall Horan doesn’t allow to fade away by carrying on with the catchy « The Tide ». Between songs, Niall Horan let his fans know that he’s been dreaming of performing at The Greek for many years after seeing some of his favorite bands on this same stage. After throwing some jokes and thanking his fans for their dedication Niall Horan takes on a softer side with « This Town », the track that revealed him as a solo artist. Whether it is ardent or vulnerable, emotion is running through every song performed as in the charming « Paper Houses ». In « You and Me », charm mingles with confidence, shining through the deep vocals of the artist. Being confident is what you also need when you tackle a Bruce Springsteen’s song like « Dancing in the Dark ». Niall covers it with no pretentiousness and most of all, brilliantly! « You can’t start a fire without a spark » the song says… And that special spark, Niall definitely has it! Master of his favorite instrument and comfortable in occupying the whole stage, there is no doubt that Niall belongs where he is standing right now. On « Seeing Blind », Niall invited Maren Morris to come back on stage to perform the song with him and we love the musical chemistry between those two. The fire soothes a bit on « Too Much To Ask », « Flicker » and « Fool’s Gold », the last one being drawn from One Direction’s discography. It becomes very difficult to channel the public’s fervor even though the artist asks to put phones away and enjoy the silence on « Flicker ». Excitement eventually fades away for a second and the moment feels like a beautiful respiration in the course of this show.

WORDS by PAM CHARBIT AND CORALINE BLAISE ; PHOTOS BY PAM CHARBIT

On « So Long », it is time for Niall Horan to shine a bit differently, in front of a piano. He leaves us thinking he should play it way more often before singing the charming « Since We’re Alone », opening a space of intimacy. Another languorous song « Fire Away » is playing and violins twirl around before one pop anthem you can’t resist. Niall Horan covers Tom Petty’s « I Won’t Back Down » and gradually leads us towards a flamboyant grand finale. Indeed, as the show unravels, the energy doesn’t cease to increase especially while he’s playing « Drag Me Down » by One Direction which clearly electrified the crowd. It was almost too predictable but the reference to his early career as one of the members of the band feels nice to remember, and fair-play to emphasize. As a goodbye, Niall Horan chooses his hit « Slow Hands ». On this song, Niall leaves his guitar aside and becomes a true performer. Going from one end of the stage to the other, he goes for a few dance moves and comes to meet his public. If we learned something about Niall Horan tonight, it is clearly that his apparent calm and supposed timidity actually hide a true energy and a delicate self- confidence. In front of a public that sometimes comes very close to hysteria, Niall Horan doesn’t lose himself and delivers an honest, generous and playful show. The jump from studio to live is totally convincing thanks to simple, solid arrangements and even some surprising reinterpretations of his own songs or songs of artists that particularly inspire him. Then, if the audience at The Greek was clearly won over from the very beginning, the rare people that were left to convince are charmed as well!

« NIALL HORAN’S apparent calm and supposed timidity actually hide a true energy and a delicate selfconfidence  »

CHARLIE PUTH C

harlie Puth became, over the last couple of years, a household name in pop music. After writing and appearing on the worldwide hit « See You Again » in 2015 with Wiz Kalifa for Fast & Furious 7’s soundtrack, the artist quickly escalated the industry steps thanks to his debut album « Nine Track Mind » in 2016. This record included many successful collaborations like « Marvin Gaye » with Meghan Trainor and « We Don’t Talk Anymore » with Selena Gomez. The 26 year-old songwriter-producer decided to push his career forward with his sophomore album « Voicenotes », way more mature and R&B oriented than what he had unveiled before. The album, that came out last May, depicts a clever mix between ballads and upbeats tracks with a large range of influences going from pop to R&B and Jazz, including other prestigious collaborations with James Taylor on « Change », Boyz II Men on « If You Leave Me Now », and R&B princess Kehlani on « Done For Me ». The whole record, which was previously scheduled for January, has been entirely produced by the man himself. After finally unveiling his highly anticipated new project, Charlie quickly embarked in a tour, the Voicenotes Tour, across America with a stop at the mythic Greek Theatre in Los Angeles and On The Move was there to witness this. Before the artist’s arrival, the 21 year-old pop singer Hailee Steinfeld was the one opening the show. She performed some songs already available, although she doesn’t have a full album out yet, including « Starving » and « Most Girls ». The former Pitch Perfect actress also sang for the very first time a brand new song co-written by Justin Tranter - who was in the audience - and Julia Michaels. After thirty-ish minutes, the songstress left the stage while the public was impatiently waiting for Charlie Puth to arrive.

WORDS AND PHOTOs by PAM CHARBIT

Live from Los Angeles In the venue we can notice a couple of artists who came to support the « Attention » singer. Among them the ex Glee actor Darren Criss, the singer-songwriter Bruno Major and Puth’s writing partner JKash. Charlie finally arrives on stage, hidden behind a white curtain and starts his set with his latest single « The Way I Am ». He decides to go on with « How Long » while the whole audience screamed the lyrics back at him. The singers claims that the show was almost cancelled due to sickness after his show in Las Vegas the day before. Hopefully for us, his vocal chords healed and Charlie was able to continue his show. We can find in the setlist a mix of old and new songs such as « Patient », « Somebody Told Me », « LA Girls » and « Change », « Done For Me », hits like « Marvin Gaye », « One Call Away » and less-known tracks like « Suffer ». Switching between high pitched notes and Jazz demonstrations, we really feel that Charlie belongs to the stage and feels more comfortable than ever before.

« Switching between high pitched notes and Jazz demonstrations, Charlie PUTH feels more comfortable than ever beforE » While he finishes his set with « See You Again » in front of a public that doesn’t want the evening to come to an end, we know that Charlie Puth is here to stay. If the American leg of the Voicenotes tour is now over, the singer will fly to Asia until the end of November before hopefully announcing UK and European dates.

WHAT’S UP THE HYPNOTIc tale of TERRENOIRE

IN FRANCE ?

Terrenoire is a family story. Théo and Raphaël Herrerias have always been passionate about music. These past few years, they both developed their own project - pushing their musical ambitions professionally: Théo showcased his multiinstrumentalist skills in «1000 Chevaux-Vapeur» while Raphaël made a beautiful demonstration as a story-teller in his shortalbum «J’étais l’oiseau soudain». It is only in their late twenties that they decided to truly bring together their talents in the enigmatic duo we’re introducing. Their stage name Terrenoire comes from the neighbourhood they grew up in :« In our songs, we talk about our hometown but also our journey towards this imaginary place we call ‘Black Paradiso’. This chimeric land is the skeleton of our musical project.» It is a metaphor of their constant back-and-forth between the two cities they have most at heart : Saint-Etienne and Paris, their childhood and their adulthood, their home and their dream. On a more pragmatic level, this mystic trip allows them to draw different chapters to their discography. By extension, their own record label is called ‘Black Paradiso’. The few singles they released already are some elegant pieces of raw poetry, declaimed by Raphaël. His perfect diction is highlighted by Théo’s minismalistic and refined electronic production. At times, his haunting voice is heard in the background too. Terrenoire’s hypnotic tale is also put in images by the two brothers. They released three lyric videos depicting their journey towards ‘Black Paradiso’ where they layers different times, landscapes -rural and urban- and centrings: a true cinematographic statement and singular aesthetic you’ll love to dive in! Welcome to Terrenoire’s world.

They could be the little brothers of some of the most iconic American pop-punk bands! Their accent is flawless, their guitars and bass angry, their lyrics heady and their energy striking... Yet, they’re four guys based in Cannes, in the South-East of France, coming together under the name of Fallen Resonance. Formed in 2014, it is only in 2016 that Nicolas Ford (guitar and vocals), Clément Batailley (guitar and vocals) and Paul Costa (drums and vocals) decided to seriously carry on their project, when meeting Lucas Gasquez (bass), the latest addition to the band. All talented hard-workers, it could only lead to an interesting sound! Inspired by All Time Low, As It Is, Waterparks or State Champs, the four members also find references in pop artists like Ed Sheeran or Shawn Mendes, whose they like to cover on their Youtube channel. But the true richness of Fallen Resonance is to find on their original tracks! «Coming Home», «Miss The Plane» and «Picture January» are true pop-punk gem, which production is impressive for such a young, self-made band. Fallen Resonance is always in search for improvement -both in the studio and live, performing on local stages for now-, but we’re willing to take a bet on their career to take off really soon!

Témé TAN : HE’S GOT THE GROOVE!

KIDDY SMILE, FLAMBOYANT MILITANT

He is a DJ, a producer, a singer, a dancer... He is also a black man, gay, with the body of a titan and a free, exuberant style. Kiddy Smile is a lot of things society still have a hard time dealing with. He corresponds to no stereotypes and surrenders to no status quo. In the end, he is just a flamboyant personality you need to know more about! Born and raised in Rambouillet, with Cameroonian roots, Pierre Hache understood, as a teenager, that he wasn’t going to follow a generic and expected path in life. He made his first steps on artistic territories through stylism - a passion passed on by his mother and dance, essentially hip-hop. He also started practicing voguing, born in New-York in the latino and afro-american homosexual community. These skills drove him to almost be casted for a Madonna tour. Between Paris and Los Angeles, he met more and more figures - like Beth Ditto- that helped him shape his identity and assert his position into the LGBTQ community. At 29 years old, he just released his debut album «One Trick Pony»: a heady and sexy 14-track electro record. His warm and deep vocals are carefully displayed on irresistible melodies. A blatant but essentially fun piece of house music. Though he states that « it is not a militant album, it just tells about my life », Kiddy Smile can’t deny his political and social commitments. On the last ‘Fête de la Musique’, he was invited to play live at l’Elysée -the French presidential headquarters- and step on stage with a shirt saying « Immigrant’s son, black and queer ». Although this bold move cost him to face a lot of backlash in France, Kiddy Smile certainly won’t stop shaking the lines of our narrow-minded society and knocking down our imaginary walls!

Born and raised between Kinshasa and Brussels, Tanguy Haesevoets eventually earned his surname of « Témé Tan » in Japan, after several trips all around the world. Studying la bosa nova or the Flamenco in Spain and trying his hands at the famous samba in Bresil, Témé Tan merged himself with the culture of the country he’s visiting, always trying to discover new rhythms, sonorities and musical friends along the way. Fascinated by his roots and inspired by his travels, his music delivers soft touches of soul mixed with some hip-hop vibes and  afro  elements, telling intimate stories and modern, seductive experiences. As a whole, his songs such as « Amethys » and « Ça Va Pas La Tête » are what you can call moments of grace with minimalist afro-pop groove. As personal and groovy as it can be, his debut album, simply named « Témé Tan » is a patchwork and collection of his inspirations, working like a blank musical canvas being up to interpretation and reverie by the listener. What really strikes us while listening to the 12 tracks, it’s the spontaneity and organic vibe coming from them. There’s nothing more refreshing than a young artist leaving his mark on the musical scene.

Inspired by Michael Jackson, MC Solaar and Aki Farka Touré as a kid, his sound could be described as a giant melting-pot and mix of these artists’ work.

OTM TEAM PAM

founder, editorial director I spend most of my time apologizing to my favorite streaming platform for ripping off their «add to playlist» button. When i’m not looking for new artists to talk to you about I drown myself in a sea containing a mix of old R&B and punk-rock sound. Sometimes I go to concert venues more often than I go to bed and I listen to music even when I sleep. I’ll be probably deaf in 40 years but knowing you’ll discover new artists through this mag makes everything worthwhile.

CORALINE

graphic designer, writer

Wannabe architect, musical writer by passion. I am in love with matter, music and words. Drunk with british indie-rock and pop-folk. I guess my wildest dream would be designing and building a gig venue, for which I would decide the opening line-up. In the meantime, I am the curly girl with too much hair, front row.

LéNAELLE

writer Meet the youngest of the crew ! Aspiring music journalist and communication student, I spend most of my free time surrounded by books and hot chocolate. Basically obsessed with british pop music and indie artists, if you’re looking for me you’ll probably find me singing my heart out at a concert. if i could turn back time, i’d definitely pop to the Panic! At The Disco show in Chicago in 2008.

LUDIVINE

writer Who am I, in a nutshell? I am a daydreamer, a traveler at heart, a concert addict and I see beauty in everything. Music is my escape route and my best friend. People say that have an eclectic taste in music which is true although you’ll see me mostly at rock shows. Fun fact: I actually own a guitar since I was 4 and I still don’t know how to play. I am also the girl that’s like «Hey you gotta listen to this!» and 2 hours later we’re still on YouTube... Oops!

COLINE

writer If it were possible, I would probably live in a concert venue! Gigs are, without any hesitation, the events I appreciate the most. Addicted to pop music, tattoos, Youtube, The Greatest Showman original soundtrack, TV shows and Disney movies, I always love to discover new artists and talk about them with my friends. Professionally speaking, my biggest dream would be to have a fashion or music-related job. I guess I just need art to be part of my life!

NAYANA

writer

I am working in communication and design. I always loved music but I never thought about writing about it. Now, it is part of my everyday life and I am loving it ! On my free time, if I am not at a gig, I am probably in a movie theater or talking too much about my new favorite TV Shows. You can always find me at festivals, failing desperatly to see everything. Also travelling is awesome but with well-crafted indie playlists, it’s better!

Haley

writer An aspiring entertainment reporter, I am constantly caught between covering the world of pop culture and reading about it. After graduating from Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, I moved to Los Angeles to embed myself in the heart of the entertainment industry. If I’m not watching a movie, at a concert or reading the latest celebrity news article, I probably am at the beach.
