legacy A special tradition was born in the early 1920s when Oklahoma State University (then Oklahoma A&M College) began searching for a new mascot. The true roots of Pistol Pete date back to a century ago. The character of Pistol Pete originated from Frank B. Eaton. In the 1920s, Eaton was involved in the Armistice Day Parade in Stillwater and OSU’s Homecoming Parade. This well-known and admired cowboy passed away in 1958 — that same year, Charlie Lester appeared as OSU’s first Pistol Pete mascot. Eaton will always be remembered, and “Pistol Pete” continues to serve as a symbol of the cowboy spirit now and forever.

Calf Fry Festival: Stillwater’s largest annual 3-day outdoor festival features the biggest names in Red Dirt and country music.

Red Dirt Music History: The sound of Red Dirt music is more than a genre rooted and cultivated in Stillwater. It is a catalyst for storytelling and a source of mentorship for musicians and songwriters who have influenced the Stillwater culture and captured the hearts of their loyal audiences of all ages. Red Dirt music was rooted in the sacred ground along the outskirts of town in 1979, where once stood a two-story farmhouse, known as “The Farm.” Musicians held jam sessions in the living room, on the front porch, in the garage, and around campfires. Musicians such as Bob Childers – the Father of Red Dirt music – Tom Skinner, Jason Boland, Stoney LaRue, Randy Crouch, Monica Taylor, Mike McClure, Cody Canada, the Red Dirt Rangers and many more launched their music careers at “The Farm” and in Stillwater’s live music venues.

Bob Childers’ Gypsy Café: The multi-venue event attracts over 60 songwriters annually to spotlight Red Dirt music and fund grants for Oklahoma music professionals in crisis.

EM: Live music can be expected in this new eclectic downtown bar and restaurant featuring a rooftop bar. Finnegan’s Fighting Goat: New downtown location, larger space to hang out with friends and enjoy live music, with new outdoor seating.

Tumbleweed Dancehall & Concert Venue: Stillwater’s largest live music venue and dance floor comes to life with concerts throughout the year.

Iron Monk Brewing Company: Stillwater’s first craft brewery offers ever-revolving small-batch brews as well as weekly live music, trivia, and brewery tours. Lake McMurtry: Rent a kayak, go swimming, fishing, boating, or enjoy over 30 miles of multi-use trials, then stay in the RV and tent camping areas.

Lakeside Memorial Golf Course: Stillwater’s most historic golf destination served as the home of OSU Golf for almost 50 years and is the only full-length public driving and practice facility. Lake Carl Blackwell: There are 10 distinct campground areas, featuring over 50 miles of horse, hiking, and biking trails with camping available year-round on over 250 RV sites. Stillwater 500: Over 33 miles of red clay trails were established for motorcycle enthusiasts as a great family trail riding and motocross park. Karsten Creek Golf Course: Built for the OSU golf teams, this elite course will challenge the most experienced golfers. 30

Stillwaggin’ Dog Park: Your furry family members will enjoy this fenced outdoor space to run off energy, socialize, and make friends.

White Barn Estates: Enjoy a 9-hole par-3 golf course, practice putting greens, an 18-hole miniature govlf course, horseshoes, and 5 stocked ponds for fishing.

Leafer Lodge: The 10-acre Christmas tree farm hosts outdoor movies and events throughout the year. They also have a 40-foot slide, swings, yard games, and a Sugar Shack for snacks.

The Botanic Garden at OSU: The 100-acres are located between two oak groves and includes walking trails, native plants, and annual events.

The Twelves Events & Agritourism Center: The new venue features seasonal events, such as a pumpkin patch in the fall and Santa visits in December. You can also rent the space for private events and enjoy farm-to-table catered dinners. N40 Berries: Grab a basket and you pick from 6 delicious blackberry varieties at this local farm in June and early July. Stillwater Farmer’s Market: Find fresh fruits and vegetables, plants, jams and jellies, and baked goods from local producers weekly. Stillwater Milling Company: In addition to their signature line of livestock feed, you’ll find clothes, toys, gifts, and more in one of Stillwater’s oldest businesses. OSU College of Veterinary Medicine: The annual Vet Med Open House features hands-on family-friendly activities. 32
