Austrian-Hungarian Lands I: Vienna, the Adriatic, the Alps and Prague (12, 10 or 8 Days)

We love road journeys. They are by far our favourite way of traveling. And when we’re in the mood for spoiling ourselves with fine food and delightful hotels besides the sheer pleasure of being on some of the world’s best roads, we turn to Europe! Few regions within Europe offer as much variety of landscapes and cultures and roads as the one centered on the Alps. The countries and regions of the Alps and the erstwhile Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy - for example, Bavaria, Austria, Switzerland, Italy’s Alto Adige with its Dolomites, the French Alps, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Croatia - are a treasure trove of hidden gems. We therefore take great pleasure in introducing you to our first, carefully crafted Alpine driving journey itinerary that is without equal. Now turn the page and find out what we’ve come to love ourselves so much…

Day 1 Arrive in Vienna and begin your visit of the romantic capital of the erstwhile Austrian Hungarian Monarchy You will arrive in Vienna on this day and we will arrange the transfer to your hotel according to your arrival schedule. If you can arrive in Vienna before 2pm, we welcome you to join a short excursion into the city center to begin to acquaint yourself with one of Europe’s most beautiful capitals. Vienna … the former capital of the Habsburg AustroHungarian Empire and nowadays the capital of Austria, the City of Music, the City of the Blue Danube, the only city worldwide that created its own distinct cuisine and the only capital that grows its very own wine within its city-borders. St. Stephen’s Cathedral, The Hofburg (the Imperial Court), Schönbrunn and Belvedere Palaces, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Imperial Treasury, The

Spanish Horse-Riding School, the world’s largest graphic-art museum (the Albertina), the palaces and state buildings along the Ring Straße (the former inner defense line)… Vienna – the melting-pot and nucleus of the former empire – attracted (and still attracts) scientists, entrepreneurs, artists, architects, engineers, physicists, Zuckerbäcker (“sugar bakers” or makers of sweets) and musicians from all around the world. Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Brahms, Schönberg, Mahler, Schubert, Gluck, the Strauss Family (creators and promoters of the Viennese Waltz tradition) and many more musicians lived and worked in this city and enriched its vast history with their master pieces. Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, to name but a few, are among Vienna’s bestknown painters. Otto Wagner, Friedrich Loos, Helmer & Fellner and Theophil Hansen its most prominent architects. How to introduce you to a city of such splendor in less

than forty-eight hours? We hope that before you depart the day after, you will have unforgettable memories of Vienna! In the early evening of Day 1, we will host a welcome and pre-departure briefing over a dinner with your fellow travelers at a local restaurant with a very long history in the heart of Vienna!

coffee houses where the Viennese while away their time reading newspapers, chatting with friends and sipping one of many varieties of coffee.

After your breakfast, you will take a horse-drawn carriage ride into the city center.

In the afternoon, we will arrange a program aligned with your interests: for some of you, Vienna may be a place to get in some shopping along the well-known Kärtnerstrasse; for others, perhaps you would want to attend a concert or a museum; for others yet, a visit to Schönnbrunn castle may be of interest.

Vienna’s history reaches back for millennia. For anyone but specialists, the events and personalities that have shaped Vienna are bewildering. But thankfully, we’ve found a fun and entertaining way for you to learn about Vienna’s past right through to modernity. Be surprised! No stay in Vienna would be complete without a visit to some of its best-known landmarks such as St. Stephen’s Cathedral and its Imperial Palace. So much is there so see in the latter alone that one could spend days in this palace. We have selected for you two that impress us the most: the splendid Imperial Treasury and the incredibly beautiful National Library. A visit to these two will easily fill the morning! For lunch we plan to take you to one of Vienna’s many, traditional

In the evening, we will take you to a small, typical Viennese restaurant frequented much more by locals than by tourists. We suggest an early night since the following day your driving journey begins.

Day 3 On back roads through rolling hills and vineyards to Slovenia… Your car will be delivered to your hotel from where we will begin the journey. This morning’s drive will take you, before long, onto small roads that run along Austria’s border with Hungary. What’s more, the Austrian countryside is dotted with castles small and large. You will see several along the way. Before lunch, the road will rise up to a wine region called the “SouthStyrian Wine Road”. Some call it the Tuscany of Austria. So close does this road run

along Austria’s border with Slovenia that there are sections where the northern side of the road belongs to Austria, the southern one to Slovenia. For lunch, we have selected a hidden gem of a restaurant on the Slovenian side of the border... one wouldn’t believe that such culinary creativity can be found in such a remote, little-known place. After lunch, you will continue to drive toward your destination of the day, the small town of Otocec in south-eastern Slovenia. While some of the afternoon’s drive will be along a highway, the better part of the route will be along winding country roads that lead through forests and meadows of remote Slovenia.

It is surrounded by a lake-like river with walking and cycling paths. It will be a wonderful place for your first night on the road in Europe, a world away from the busy-ness of Vienna!

Day 4 On the way south to the Adriatic Sea… After a long day, it will be nice to make a slow start into today. In the morning, you will continue driving south on back roads toward Croatia. Shortly, after crossing the border into Croatia, you will enter a highway that will carry you west toward Istria and your first encounter with the sea in a small town called Opatija.

Opatija feels elegant and luxurious: that won’t come as a surprise once you know that it was a fashionable destination for the Austrian imperial family and Austrian nobility in times past. There, right by the Adriatic, you will find yourself enjoying a wonderful seafood lunch…it will mark the start of a few days in Mediterranean climate. In the afternoon, you will take beautiful side roads that take you through the hilly and

Italian-feeling countryside of Istria – it will be sheer pleasure to drive here, especially if you’re lucky and the weather is fine and can open the top of your cabriolet! You will arrive early at your hotel for the next two nights. It is a special place where you can and will want to spend enough time to enjoy its surroundings and serenity. Dinner will be at the hotel.

Day 5 A small, hidden corner of paradise: of oceans and seafood… After a leisurely breakfast, you will drive to a nearby town called Rovinj, an active fishing port and a jewel of a village situated right by the ocean. Istriot, a romance language, still spoken by some residents, is almost extinct. Today, Rovinj is bilingual: almost everyone speaks Italian and Croatian, reflecting the fact that in the inter-war years Istria belonged, in fact, to Italy. Rovinj (or Rovigno in Italian) has a history that dates back to Roman times. Originally it was built on an island that was connected to the mainland only much lateer (in 1763). Rovinj features charming alleyways and an impressive church. It will well be worth giving an hour or two for exploring it, guided or on your own. You will then drive north, again on back roads, into the township of Buzet, the truffle

capital of Istria. Listen to Croatians, and they will tell you that Istrian truffles – white or black – are a match for (and even exceed) the quality of those from Italy, at a much lower price. (They will tell you the same about Olive oils as well… about which in just a minute.) On November 2nd 1999, Mr. Zigante unearthed the largest specimen ever: at 1.31kg, this find entered the Guiness Book of Records. Having tasted white truffles from this region – sprinkled over delicately prepared scrambled eggs, for example – they deserve a worldwide reputation, and not only because of this one find. In the afternoon, we would like to introduce you to the world of Istrian olive oils which have of late received high accolades: in 2015 Istria was voted as the finest region for olive oils in the world. You will have a chance to taste them and learn how to distinguish good olive oils from bad by visiting one of Istria’s finest olive oil producers. In the evening, we will take you to a superb seafood restaurant, a true hidden gem not too far from your hotel.

Day 6 Return to Slovenia… of country parks and Postonja…

Don’t worry, no climbing or arduous walking is required; just bring some warm clothing, though, since the temperature in the cave hovers around 9 degrees.

In the morning, you will have ample time to enjoy a few more quite moments (or even a massage) at your hotel.

Dinner will be at a restaurant not too far from your hotel: besides excellent cooking, you will have a stunning view over Ljubljana’s center and old town.

Then we begin heading north again and re-enter Slovenia for a special lunch…let it be a surprise. In the afternoon, on the way to Ljubljana, the day holds in store one high-light, namely the Postonja caves, better called a “cave system”, 24km long. These karst caves were created by the Pivka river. The visit will be touristy, mind you, but still very much worthwhile. Only a small portion of the cave system has been opened for tourists. The stalactites and stalagmites found within the accessible areas are stunningly beautiful. One can only wonder what the first spelunkers would have made of it all, this magnificent under-earth world. p82

On your way back to the hotel, enjoy Ljubljana’s bustling night street life…it feels relaxed, yet lively, more animated by locals’ taste for a good life than by tourists’ seeking of fun. We love it!

Day 7 Ljubljana and Lake Bled…a charming capital and stunning scenery… In the morning we have planned for you an excursion to Lipica. Lipica takes its name from the Slovenian word for Linden Trees and is the best known home of the Lippizan horses that appear in the rarified performances of the Spanish Court Riding School in Vienna. In Vienna, they are show pieces; here in Lipica, in Western Slovenia, near the Italian border (less than one kilometer away), just above the Adriatic Sea, they are in their natural environment, and it is here that they are bred. These horses are so elegant, so nimble, so noble and majestic that seeing them here when they (the mares only) are out and about on their expansive and paradise-like grounds, when the stallions are given their workouts by master trainers, or when riding in a horse-drawn carriage along

the graveled, Linden Tree-lined pathways of they area, is a special experience you will not want to miss. After the visit to Lipica, we will take you to a beautiful restaurant in the Vipava valley, one of Slovenia’s finest winegrowing regions. The restaurant is in the middle of nowhere in a centuries-old farmhouse that never fails to delight our guests. It is also a good starting point for an exploration of some select vineyards in the afternoon before returning to Ljubljana later.

After a bit of a rest (or, if you wish, your own exploration of Ljubljana), it will be time for dinner in a local restaurant. We recommend an early night since the following day will be a relatively long one.

After a stop at the top (along with a snack and a drink), you will descend to Zell am See and from their to your destination for the day, Berchtesgaden. Your hotel for the next two nights is situated high above Berchtesgaden with wonderful views of the Alps. Dinner will be at the hotel.

Today you will be able to enjoy, fine weather permitting, two spectacular scenic highlights of this journey. Soon after leaving Ljubljana we will make a stop at Lake Bled, one of Slovenia’s most beautiful lakes. While it can be touristy, it is a must-stop attraction, especially since your route to the Austrian Alps will lead you right by it. Not far from Bled, in Carinthia’s lake district where many Austrians enjoy their holidays, we will stop for lunch at a hotel restaurant situated right by Lake Millstatt. Fresh trout and other freshwater fish, along with other Austrian specialties, will delight our palate. And then comes our crossing of the Alps via Austria’s most spectacular mountain road, that of the Grossglockner. The pass tops out at just under

Day 10 On back roads to Prague (10 Days: back to Vienna) Today you will leave Berchtesgaden, Salzburg and the Alps behind and continue north-north-east toward Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. On the way you will first cross from Germany into Austria, then a little while later from Austria briefly back into Germany and eventually into the Czech Republic. During the morning’s drive you will pass through Passau, a town at the border between Czech and Austria with a history that reaches back two millennia. It is also called the “Three River Town” since it is the point of confluence of three rivers, at least one of one of which, the Danube, is worldrenowned. Shortly after, in a small town called Freyung, we have discovered a hidden gem of a restaurant for lunch.

In the afternoon, your route will lead you through Šumava, one of Czech’s national parks which is covered with one of the most extensive forests of Central Europe. Since 1990 it has been a protected biosphere reserve of UNESCO. At the end of the day, you will reach Prague. Dinner will be at your hotel; the hotel’s restaurant will afford you a beautiful view over Prague, this most beautiful of European small capitals. 10-Day Journey If you are on the 10-day journey, then you will return to Vienna today. Day 11 Europe’s most beautiful, old capital... Today is your chance to explore Prague with us. Prague is, indeed, an exceptionally beautiful capital, what with its many alleyways, carefully maintained or restored buildings, its rightfully famous Charles Bridge, Prague Castle and many, many other attractions. But in this world of global tourism, beauty carries the danger of bringing about its own destruction: the number of tourists that have descended on Prague is staggering. Still, we have designed an itinerary through the city that we believe highlights its everlasting beauty while escaping some of tourism’s excesses. We begin with an early morning walk across the Charles Bridge when the light accentuates its beautiful shape and statues that adorn it on both sides. From there, we take you on a guided tour through lessfrequented small streets to discover small churches and other landmarks such as

Kafka’s birthplace. After a leisurely walk, you will cross the Vltava river again to end up at one of Prague’s many, Austria-Hungary-influenced coffee shops for a light lunch. From there, we have arranged a nostalgic ride in old (but well-restored) interwar-year classic cars (not really classic, but still worthy of the name) to Prague Classic for a visit of this enormous palace (by some accounts the largest castle in the world!) with its stunningly beautiful Basilica of St. Vitus. Whether you’re a history buff or not, and regardless of how much you know about AustriaHungary’s or Prague’s history, it is well worth a visit, if for no other reason than to admire the enormous structure’s architecture, sculptures and stained glass windows.

Day 12 A short drive back to Vienna, then life must go on… Today is the last day of this journey. It will conclude with a drive through the Czech Republic’s

countryside before entering Austria. From there it isn’t far to Vienna. If life must go on, then you will find yourself in Vienna in time for an evening flight back home. On the other hand, why not extend your journey with a continuation in Vienna or elsewhere in Europe?

Adventures and Discoveries in Local Cuisines

While this itinerary is not one of our ‘Foodie’-themed journeys, we do believe that each one of our journeys should introduce you not only to hidden gems of cultural and scenic beauty, but that sampling local cuisines is also a must. We will therefore arrange for you ‘tasting menus’ such that you can try out a variety of specialties during each meal. While alcoholic beverages are not included in the price, on certain occasions, when we believe that a particular dish is best enjoyed when combined with a local drink, we will make it part of the experience! For private journeys, we can, of course, tailor the meal experience to your taste (and budget).
