“For Everything There Is A Season...”
THANK YOU FOR A GREAT 2014! “Bet on Betty!” Betty Birzer 785-418-5701
Democracies have a history of failing. The government gets too big and elected officials forget why they were elected. They govern with re-election in mind instead of staying true to their principles.
My resolution is to say a prayer occasionally that our country returns to our constitution and we become great again.
Wishing you all the blessings for a happy and healthy New Year. 1220 East Logan Ottawa, KS 66067 785-242-3182

Happy New Year!
I think the older I get the more I worry. I worry about this country. I want my grandchildren to grow up in a country that is the greatest country in the world, just as I did. The history of this country is remarkable, why would anyone want to change our form of government and re-write our constitution?

Grape and Apple Crisp By the editors of Relish Magazine Unlike bananas in bread, peaches in cobbler or apples in pie, grapes don’t spring to mind for cooking. But we wanted a little summer in winter, so we started experimenting. We found them to behave similar to fresh cherries . . . without the pits and a lot cheaper. Grapes are often an impulse buy at the supermarket. They look so fresh and taste so refreshing, we can’t wait to get them home, give them a rinse and start snacking. When buying grapes, remember to look for bunches whose stems are bright green, not brown, and be sure to remove any damaged or bruised fruit before storing. Here are some ideas for using them. • Make a salad of mesclun greens with slices of red apple, red grapes and feta cheese, all dressed in a light, bright vinaigrette. • Freeze a handful of grapes for a refreshing, light snack or dessert. • Toss halved red or green grapes with cooked quinoa, sliced radishes and celery, chopped green onion, and toasted walnuts for a main-dish high-fiber salad. Dress with your favorite curry-flavored vinaigrette. • Make this Grape and Apple Crisp, a quick, super easy dessert that calls out for a scoop of vanilla ice cream as a topping.
Grape and Apple Crisp Sometimes, the top is nicely browned but the apples are not quite tender. If this happens, cover the pan with foil and bake another 5 or 10 minutes, until the fruit is soft. If you prefer, you can make this crisp in 8 (12-ounce) ramekins. Topping: 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 3/4 cup old-fashioned oats 1/3 cup chopped walnuts 6 tablespoons granulated sugar 6 tablespoons brown sugar 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) cup cold, unsalted butter, cut into small pieces Filling: 6 cups thinly sliced, peeled tart apple (like Granny Smith) 2 cups seedless red grapes (about 2/3 pound) 1/3 cup orange juice 1 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons granulated sugar 1. Preheat oven to 375F. 2. To prepare topping, combine flour, oats, walnuts, granulated sugar and brown sugar. Add butter and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to combine until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. 3. To prepare filling, combine all ingredients in a 2-quart baking pan; sprinkle with topping mixture. Bake 45 minutes, or until topping is golden brown and fruit is tender. Let cool on wire rack. Serves 8.

Hearing better thanks to smarter technology (BPT) - Technology has made dramatic improvements in the lives of people of all ages, and the improvements made in hearing technology may be some of the most advanced to occur in the last several years. Just a decade ago, hearing aids were basic amplifiers. Now they’re completely connected with other technological devices, making everyday life easier for the wearer. For example, have an iPhone and want to listen to music, or answer a call and hear the person on the line? Starkey’s Halo hearing aids, and the companion TruLink app, allow the hearing devices to connect directly with an iPhone without the need for any other intermediary device. There are more than 36 million Ameri-
Hidden holiday hazard? Don’t let foot pain dampen holiday spirits BPT) - Americans spend just shy of 274 hours a year on shopping - or 45 minutes per day - according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ American Time Use Survey. It’s probably safe to say a good chunk of that time occurs during the holiday season. While much shopping takes place online, many people still head to stores, and those folks will be logging a lot of hours on their feet. “The National Retail Federation predicts that total holiday spending will be close to $32 billion this year,” says Dr. Frank Spinosa, a podiatrist and president of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). “Shoppers should also spend a few dollars - and some time - caring for their feet. Our 2014 foot health survey indicates that just 25 percent of Americans regularly take care of their feet, but many holiday activities, such as shopping, preparing large meals or even dancing require extra time on your feet.” Don’t let foot pain slow you down during the holidays when you can least afford it. To keep your feet healthy and pain-free this holiday season, the APMA offers these tips: * Wear the right shoes for the task. If you’ll be walking through the entire mall, leave the high heels at home. Instead, wear a comfortable walking or athletic shoe with good arch support and a padded sole. Save your heels for dancing, but don’t wear ones that are so high you risk a fall. Heels 3 inches or higher increase your risk of ankle injury, so look for shoes with a modest heel of 2 inches or less. * Take breaks when doing tasks that require you to be on your feet for extended
periods of time. At the mall, find a spot to sit with a cup of coffee for a few minutes. At home, sit down between meal prep tasks if possible. * Stretch your feet. Raise, point and curl your toes for five seconds on each foot and repeat 10 times to avoid toecramping. Sit down, cup your heel and gently rotate your ankle five times to loosen and relax ankle joints. * At the end of a long day of shopping, decorating or cooking, treat yourself to a foot massage. It’s a great way to relieve tension, promote circulation and refresh the skin. Add in a soothing lotion to maximize the relaxation. * Elevate your legs to reduce swelling. Prop up your feet while sitting in your office chair, and at the end of the day lie down and prop your feet above the level of your heart. Talk to a podiatrist about persistent foot pain. They are specially trained to care for the feet and lower limbs. You can find a podiatrist at www.apma.org. Sudoku Solution #3494-M

cans with hearing loss, yet only 20 percent of those who could benefit from a hearing aid actually wear one, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. The hope is that the rapid improvements in technology mean that more people with hearing difficulties will opt to undergo a simple hearing test and find the perfect hearing aid, allowing them to return to the lifestyle of their choice. Many people avoid getting hearing aids because of the perceived stigma attached to them. People worry they’ll look older or that they will be perceived to have a disability. This is where technology improvements have made great strides. Devices today are much smaller than the hearing aids your parents or
grandparents wore. In fact, many are barely visible to others. For example, the Halo is an in-the-canal receiver, making the entire device very discreet. Other devices are so small that no one will notice you are wearing them. Hearing loss affects Americans of all ages. Sometimes it’s caused by age, but frequently for younger adults, it can be caused by a disease or by over-exposure to loud noises. Improvements in technology are changing the perception of hearing aids, so if you think you are experiencing hearing loss, get your hearing tested. If it’s determined you could benefit from a hearing aid, check out all the latest benefits you can enjoy due to these technological improvements.
