EDITOR’S NOTE

Mary’s Must-Haves

My Ottawa In our summer issue, we focus on Canada 150 with the celebration of our country within the city of Ottawa. And with that in mind, we asked some of our subjects about their favourite places in the capital. Tu Ly, our Outstanding Canadian (page 29), cites the ByWard Market as the best shopping destination, while Jantine Van Kregten at Ottawa Tourism mentions her much-loved local brew pubs along with her more recent affinity for the roof-top bar at Andaz hotel, where she chose to be photographed for our Step Inside feature (page 53). I challenged myself to think of my favourite places in Ottawa, and of course faced the difficulty of how to pinpoint only one or two spots in a city that makes a fun lifestyle so accessible. Living in Wellington Village, my neighbourhood faves include The Wellington Gastropub and Supply & Demand for top dining spots, with Bridgehead Coffeehouse, Thyme & Again and the Ottawa Bagelshop always in my roster. After popping into Chesterfields for our brunch feature (page 55), I know that this hip spot will become a regular breakfast haunt, along with John’s Quick Lunch. It’s an even greater challenge to make a personal pick from the entire city when there are so many beautiful places to visit in the National Capital Region to experience Canadian culture. Yet, the Chateau Laurier Hotel is a location that tugs at my heart and is rooted in my memory from the late 70s before I moved to Ottawa from Montreal. My father worked for Bell Canada and during the months of “rate cases” he and his colleagues lived at the iconic hotel. Together with my mother, sister, brother and occasional friend, I visited for several weekends during this time. These visits not only fostered my love for the traditional beauty of the hotel, but also began my career as a wedding crasher and star chaser! As a couple of 13-year-old girls with a bit of savvy flair, a friend and I worked our way

into a couple of weddings on one weekend stay. Sipping champagne and nibbling canapés, we mingled with guests and chatted about how fab the bride looked. We then got wind that Engelbert Humperdinck was staying in the hotel, and made our way up to the elevated floors, tapping on doors and calling out his name with hopes of catching a glimpse of the crooner. To this day, I still smirk to myself as I think back on that weekend which gave me a little more audacity than I likely should have had. There really is something about the historical hotel that always makes me feel like I can walk a little taller, be a little bolder and celebrate a little more simply by strolling through the lobby.

WELCOME home

BY MARY TAGGART PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK HOLLERON

With a background in fashion and beauty, Dominique Primeau has worked with some of the most elegant names in the industry, including Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent, and has a keen sense for luxury living. He and his partner Ross Pattee brought elegant hospitality to the Quebec town of Montebello with a grand renovation of the local presbytery building. It was transformed into a boutique-style hotel catering to adults over 18, while also serving as home for the stylish pair. Dominique is the general manager of The Manoir Chamberland, which offers luxurious guest rooms, a slick lounge and magnificent dining room, while Ross commutes to Ottawa to 8 ottawaathome.ca SUMMER 2017

work as a lawyer. When the couple purchased the neglected building in 2015, it was in great need of repair, but Dominique’s eye for detail saw the potential. “The place had good bones, but with leaks everywhere,” recalls the clever designer. “They were too numerous to count – in the attics, garage door, basement door, perimeter and basement. The chimneys were a hazard and ready to fall, as was the retaining wall off the veranda where the stones could be removed like drawers.” With skillful renovation experience under their belt, Dominique and Ross were ready to take on the Montebello OTTAWA 2017

project. They had previously renovated a century-old home in North Vancouver before moving to Ottawa in 2015, when they began a two-year renovation on a house built in 1908. Working as a designer after years of expertise as the owner of a custom furnishing store, Dominique found the appeal of the new project was strong enough for the two of them to leave Ottawa for the quaint Quebec Village. Not only does the interior space showcase the transformation, but the grounds have also been beautifully brought to life as an outdoor oasis. Decks have been added along with a hot tub, a wedding pavilion and pool with a 1,500 square-foot pool house that was designed and built by Dominique. “The yard was a blank canvas

of mostly weeds when we arrived,” says Dominique who adds that significant planting has taken place since. “We planted 450 cedars, 50 trees and over 50 rosebushes – and this is just the beginning!” This summer Dominique and Ross will welcome guests for the weekend opening on July 1, but are also making rooms available for the overflow of tourists heading into town for Montebello Rock Fest over the June 23-24 weekend. The splendid space is a tribute to their vision and Dominique’s talents, and will likely be home for the dynamic couple for many years to come. Along with rooms they still have to fill and a basement full of furnishings, they have many more ideas for evolving their splendid property.

Cottage A newly built cottage on the Big Rideau Lake was infused with a family’s love of design when a young interior designer teamed up with her stylish aunt to combine contemporary creativity with years of home renovation and decorating experience. her aunt Vicki Taggart, a property manager who has been involved in a variety of home design projects. “I admire her style – she has such great taste and a good eye for design,” says Sarah, adding that they were given considerable creative freedom on the interior design theme, furnishings, fixtures and all finishes. with four bedrooms was built by John Riley Construction from architectural plans by Barry Hobin. It has a classic Cape Cod design, with silver-grey cedar shakes and dormer windows, to suit a grand lake house designed for yearround use. To blend the interior with the exterior style and setting, natural stone and wood elements were brought inside along with Sarah’s inspiration to create a breezy essence of Martha’s Vineyard, while maintaining a true cottage vibe.

RUSTIC & CONTEMPORARY Reclaimed barn board from a hundredyear-old barn in Greely was used in many areas of the home, including ceiling beams and on a kitchen island which Sarah designed. The barn board accent on the island adds a rustic contrast to the white Caesarstone countertop and wall cabinetry, all supplied by Muskoka Cabinets, and offering a light, fresh appeal. “The two-tone was one of my favourite design aspects,” says Sarah. “The client really wanted a white kitchen, but knowing she was not afraid of colour, we incorporated some fun with the blue-grey 14 ottawaathome.ca SUMMER 2017

An individual touch with contemporary cottage flair is a talent that Sarah applies in unexpected areas. A sleek bathroom tub is encased in dark imitation wood, which is actually porcelain tile that extends to the flooring. “We used the darker tile from Astro Design in the Jack and Jill bathroom, and white tile in the ensuite bathrooms, says Sarah who adds that the vanity mirror frames were custom made by John Riley from the left-over barn board. The staircase was also given special Sarah treatment. “We wanted to do something a little unusual and dramatic to break up the predominantly white décor. The staircase posts and spindles are slightly tapered for an imperfect look, and we carried through with the Raccoon Fur trim colour from the sun room.” A natural stain was used on the steps, which like all the reclaimed pine flooring, is from Logs End. Sarah explains that all the furniture pieces were carefully selected to create a casual but thoughtful style. “The comfy over-sized chairs have slimmer arms, with softer edges on the chairs and cushions to make them cozy and welcoming for a big group of people. Throughout, we mixed different textures of linen, iron, wood and stone for a simple, yet well-coordinated approach.” Overall, Sarah and Vicki went for a neutral décor with strong pops of colour taken from an abstract, landscape painting in the living room by Montreal artist Nina Cherney. They brought in orange, yellow, turquoise, fushcia and lime green in throws, pillows and accessories with some pieces sourced locally from Hay Design in Perth. It was an upscale project that they loved working on together and praised their generous clients for embracing all their stylish ideas and designs. Contact info: sarah@vogtdesign.ca.

Flowers have been used throughout history to acknowledge and honour the joys, sorrows, celebrations and closest bonds of life. A warm relationship between florist and client, like that of Michelle VandenBosch and Laura Carline, ensures that each arrangement is perfectly personalized to its intended recipient. Michelle VandenBosch’s Rebel Petal, provides a break from tradition and a breath of fresh-smelling air. Shared with her business and life partner Gary, and located in historic Manotick, the shop is covered from floor to ceiling with vibrantly-coloured floral arrangements and affordable gift items, hand picked by Michelle in her travels. Flowers are chosen from local and word-wide vendors to guarantee the freshest and most beautiful offerings. Although Michelle has an obvious adoration of blooms, it is the customers who bring her the most joy, “Watching the delight spread across someone’s face when they see what has been made for them, is the very best part of what I do. My goal is to always exceed their expectations. We don’t have a single client we don’t love working with.” Laura Carline is one of Michelle’s treasured clients, and after years of floral celebrations, a good friend as well. For over a decade Laura has called upon Michelle to set the scene for dinner parties, holidays and festivities of every kind. “I provide her with simple details like the occasion, menu and number of guests. She incorporates my collections of dishes and vessels into her vision and transforms each space into a piece of art.” Before creating designs for a client’s home, Michelle always contemplates their personal style. “Flowers should be chosen to reflect personality. Laura and her husband are kind, fun and generous. My goal is to surround them with flowers that complement these traits. Although Laura’s home is traditional, her style is young, playful and whimsical and she loves to use colour.” When selecting flowers for a room, Michelle suggests looking to a prize piece of décor, such as paint, furniture carpet or a special bowl, for inspiration. Blossoms of the correct shape and shade can be used to pull colour from 20 ottawaathome.ca SUMMER 2017

A BIG BUNCH OF REBEL PETAL TIPS 3 If possible, avoid sending on Valentine’s Day. The cost is too high and the quality often low. 3 Orchids are extremely hardy and thrive on neglect.

3 Keep arrangements in a cool area of your home, away from direct sunlight.

3 For the greatest impact, send flowers on a rainy Monday just to let someone know you are thinking of them. 3 Avoid sending highly-scented flowers, especially to hospitals. 3 Always bring your host flowers that are ready to display. 3 Don’t forget that men love flowers too. 3 Place flowers in unexpected places like washrooms and on kitchen islands. 3 Rose petals freeze beautifully and look lovely lining the walkway to a winter party.

3 Bring the outdoors in by choosing flower colours to complement the view from your windows. OTTAWA 2017

this chosen feature, amplifying the impact of a room’s favoured focal point. Stunning hot pink chairs and beautiful artwork displayed in Laura’s dining room are ideal muses for a spectacular tablescape. As lively conversation is a must on Laura’s menu, low vases and objects are dotted down the table ensuring that no guest is out of view. The kitchen’s warm neutral palette and large island sets a seasonal stage for yellowy fall tones, bright-red holiday bouquets, the pastel ranunculus of Easter and summer’s bright bursts of pink peonies, roses and hydrangea. In the adjacent sunroom decorated in soft blues, well-placed orchids and tropical flowers complement both interior décor and a tranquil exterior setting that includes an outdoor swimming pool. When asked why flowers are such a desired and beloved way to decorate a home, Michelle sighs happily, “Flowers are a decadent luxury item and can change the entire feel of a room. Bringing them inside provides a connection to nature, brightens the mood and can get a house breathing again. Having fresh blooms around us is literally floral therapy.”

With cottage season upon us, now is a great time to refresh your summer oasis. This year’s hottest design trends incorporate natural elements that are perfect for a rustic abode or a modern chalet. You’d be amazed at what a new statement piece or a few accessories can do to a room.

necessary for any Art Deco style. Achieve this through patterned wallpaper or furniture items that highlight shapes and tones of wood.

Free spirited, relaxed and welcoming, Hygge (hoo-gah) essentially means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life. This rising Danish trend embodies what it’s like to sit and drink wine with good company – what better place to do that than at the cottage!

TIPS TO ACHIEVE THIS LOOK

3 Keep it minimal: use natural elements and choose pieces with intention. Handmade furniture from Ontario Wood producers embodies the Hygge feel, mixing local wood and soft fabrics for the ultimate comfort.

3 Cozy is key. Make a warm and inviting space by the fireplace or simply use tealights for that relaxing glow.

3 Keep your surfaces sleek and shiny; lacquer, polished wood and glossy paint come together for a gleaming effect. Reflective elements such as mirrors and glass pieces only up the ante.

If space allows, be daring and paper a feature wall in a colourful

flower-printed wallpaper – or be equally as daring, but more dramatic – by choosing a moodier print of large posies on a dark background. The look is strong and the blooms are large with no mini prints for this design trend. Choose high-quality papers to ensure an elegant effect that balances colour and pattern without overtaking the space. Paint adjacent walls in complementary neutral tones, and let the flowers do the talking in a room that is sure to bring lively conversation into bloom.

LIFE IN

FASHION BY MELISSA SHABINSKY PHOTO BY HENRIQUE GENDRE

Style & Beauty expert @melshabinsky

He is one of Canada’s most celebrated fashion designers, but Tu Ly’s ties to Ottawa are firmly rooted. His family immigrated to Canada from Vietnam in 1973, and his mother chose to settle the family in Ottawa where she opened a beauty salon. The designer started to sew at the age of 12 and he credits Marlene Shepherd, owner of Shepherd’s Fashions, where he worked part-time during high school, for inspiring him to hone his skills. He became a go-to fashion resource for the well-heeled clientele. An Ottawa Citizen profile article in the fashion section with the headline, “Tu Ly, Teen Design Prodigy” catapulted him onto the fashion scene while he was in his senior year at Lisgar Collegiate Institute. Tu held fashion shows in the Lisgar courtyard, drawing attention from the press and his classmates. He designed several prom dresses (including mine!), and from there he moved on to a grander scale of design. Tu moved to Toronto to attend Ryerson School of Fashion and to be at the centre of Canadian fashion. Over his career he has worked with both Canadian and international brands (Roots Canada, Saks Fifth Avenue, Ports 1961), but the highlight of his fashion career was being chosen as the Hudson’s Bay designer for the Canadian Olympic Team 2006 Torino Olympics and 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Tu is now living in Montreal where he is the design director of Moose Knuckles

Canada, started by another Ottawa native, Will Poho. DESCRIBE THE EVOLUTION OF FASHION IN CANADA THROUGH YOUR EXPERIENCE. In my Ryerson graduating year in 1987, the city of Toronto started the Festival of Fashion. It was incredibly exciting – huge runways were mounted and the whole fashion community united with fashion shows for the public. At the same time, Fashion Television debuted and in an instant Canada had prominently secured a place on the international fashion scene. Designers such as Alfred Sung, Wayne Clark, Lida Baday, and Hilary Radley became Canadian fashion celebrities. Timmins native Linda Evangelista became a supermodel phenomenom

and American Vogue featured her constantly. It was the beginning of the rise of Canadian style. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE CANADIAN STYLE? Canadian style is unique, diverse and distinct. We do not take ourselves seriously – we’re laid back with relaxed coolness. Most importantly, Canadian style is always inclusive. YOUR DIVERSE CAREER BEGAN IN OTTAWA, HOW HAS OTTAWA’S FASHION SCENE EVOLVED? In high school, I was inspired by the rich designs of Ottawa’s Nicola Lang. While in Toronto, I met Justina McCaffrey and fell in love with her beautiful romantic gowns. Last year I attended the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards in Ottawa and became re-acquainted with the vibrant local fashion scene. WHERE DO YOU SEE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT ON THE OTTAWA FASHION SCENE? Fashion is thriving and abundant in the capital! Boutiques such as Shepherd’s and Justine really understand their customers well, and offer amazing stylish assortments with the best of the latest trends edited. Shopping in ByWard Market is still my absolute favourite. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ASPECT OF WORKING IN FASHION? The fact that we get the chance to reinvent every six months! I just came back from a trip to Seoul and I came across a clever Korean proverb that literally translates to “Clothes are wings.” The caption under my senior year photo in Lisgar’s year book appropriately included a quote from Ralph Lauren which says, “Fashion is my life.” SUMMER 2017 ottawaathome.ca 31

LOCAL LOVE A new addition to the up-and-coming Wellington West neighbourhood of Hintonburg, Maker House Co. is all about traditional and locally-crafted furniture and housewares. Founder and owner, Gareth Davies, opened the store two years ago because he wanted to bring the maker movement to main street retail. Strongly influenced by his grandfather, a craftsman and furniture refinisher, he grew to cherish authentic handmade furniture and wanted a place to feature lasting, locally-made furniture. Fostering a network of local makers, the store generates sales for more than 100 makers across Canada. From June 11-25, Maker House Co. will be part of CraftFest on Albert Island where 100+ local makers will showcase their handmade goods (www.craft-fest.ca). HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! Ottawa’s oldest steakhouse is celebrating its 50th anniversary this summer! Halim “Al” Saikali, a Lebanese immigrant, opened Al’s Steakhouse in July 1967, and it quickly became a go-to dining destination. The recently reopened restaurant boasts a classy new vibe following major renovations in honour of Al who passed away last year. The menu has been updated, but still includes the core dishes that make the Elgin Street steakhouse famous. In celebration of their anniversary and Canada 150, Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson will present the family with a plaque on July 24.

Yoga is known to do great things for the mind, body and soul, and with a booming yoga community here in Ottawa, there is certainly no shortage of places to get your vinyasa on. Even more so when the warmer temperatures hit and our outdoor grassy spaces transform into giant yoga mats at popular events like City of Om and Parliament Hill Yoga. We caught up with some off-duty yogis and asked them to share what the practice means to them.

“Yoga is life and play. It’s an opportunity for me to breathe and slow things down in a world that encourages me to rush through life. Life requires strife, love and inevitable twists and turns for balance. Yoga has taught me to trust the journey – one breath at a time, one spoken truth at a time, one moment of humility at a time.” WHO: Lizl Fleury, owner of Elevate Yoga FAVOURITE POSE: Pigeon

“Yoga helps us relate to ourselves in a peaceful, non-judgemental way. It’s helped me deal with severe anxiety and through daily practice, I’m a calmer and happier person. Yoga reminds us that we’re more than our bodies and we’re more alike than different.” WHO: Laura Kidd, teacher at Shunnya Centre FAVOURITE POSE: Archer pose

“Yoga to me is the ability to slow down and focus inward and breathe through difficult situations. This applies to all areas of life. When my practice is off, my ability to be present, with my nutrition, health, relationships and life in general, becomes difficult. For this reason, my favourite pose is savasana. Being still sometimes is the biggest challenge.” WHO: Daniel Gomez, practices at Pure Yoga FAVOURITE POSE: Savasana

WEDDING SEASON BY MARY CIANCIBELLO

Your big day should be as unique as you are, but it’s always fun to draw inspiration from some of the hottest emerging wedding trends.

INVITATIONS The invitation sets the tone for the event and is often carried through into other details of the day. Sheryl Cogan, owner of the Paper Studio, has been in the business long enough to advise about important things like etiquette, wording and timelines, and offers up some invite trends.

IN BLOOM Colour is back with romantic, oversized flowers. Combine this trend with watercolour, and your invitations will be totally Instagrammable.

Make an entrance, and an exit! Backless and sheer-back dresses have such a sexy, yet timeless elegance to them. Some designers are adding a gorgeous train to backless dresses, giving them an even more dramatic impact.

RING The engagement ring will last you a lifetime, so it’s important that it reflects who you are. While classics like the single solitaire will always be in style, today’s trends are stunning enough to grace your left hand forever.

SHOW ME COLOUR The pink gold trend is holding its own in the wedding jewellery world. Flattering on many skin tones, brides are now choosing pink gold for either the engagement ring or wedding band, or both! Others are choosing colour in the actual stone. “Pink diamonds are getting more interest now – this is a fantastic way to be unique,” states Stephanie Appotive, Howard’s Fine Jewelers.

LIVING Neighbourhood on the Move

Little Italy BY TED SIMPSON TED_613 PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK HOLLERON PRODUCED BY TANYA CONNOLLY-HOLMES

THEN The community of Little Italy was founded in the early 1900s by the first wave of Italian immigrants to settle the Ottawa area. The neighbourhood boomed again following World War Two, with a second influx of European immigrants to Canada. From the early days, the cornerstone of the Italian community in Ottawa has been St. Anthony of Padua Church, located at the corner of Gladstone Avenue and Booth Street. The first, simple church was constructed in 1913 and dedicated to St. Anthony, patron saint of lost things and known for his undying love and devotion to the poor and sick. It was devastated by fire only four years later, and rebuilt much larger in 1925 under the supervision of famous Italian painter and architect, Guido Nincheri. Unfortunately, four years after reopening, the church caught fire again and was badly

damaged, but rebuilt using very little wood and relying on steel and concrete. The exterior was resurfaced in the 1960s with a new steeple and bell tower, bringing St. Anthony’s to its modern-day appearance.

Today, Little Italy is a key aspect of Ottawa’s urban core. With Preston Street, also called Corso Italia, as the main thoroughfare, the community stretches from Carling Avenue to Albert Street and borders against the O-Train Trillium line to the west. Aesthetically, Preston Street is a true stand-out in the city – from the iconic gateway at the south end to the murals that adorn the Queensway underpass, to the many public art installations that stretch to Gladstone and beyond. FOOD & DRINK It’s hard to imagine Italy without conjuring up visions of golden pastas and bread, deep red wines and tomatoes. There is plenty of that around, plus much, much more. The Prescott is a great place to start out. It’s very much a working-class kind of restaurant, nothing fancy, but they nail simple, Italian style food. The meatball sandwich is famous (get the extra cheese), and their foccacia crust pizza is one of the most unique pizza experiences in Ottawa – one of the many reasons this place has been in business since 1934. This neighbourhood also offers the opportunity to go far from tradition by entering the world of molecular astronomy at chef Marc Lepine’s restaurant, Atelier. A 12-course, set tasting menu in Ottawa is a true rarity, and luckily Atelier does it very well, being named number 60 on Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants 2017. For more relaxed, modern dining, two six {ate} has been pulling in a ton of foodie buzz for their small plate menu and fancy cocktails. They even appeared on Food Network’s TV show, You Gotta Eat Here. Two neat things – the kitchen offers a full menu until 2 am six nights a week, and co-owner Emily Ienzi sources much of their produce from her parent’s enormous backyard garden. RAW Pulp+Grind offers a more casual experience as a juice and espresso bar with fresh take-out. This hot spot brings a healthy vibe to the area to complement the fitness component found in the ‘hood. While the neighbourhood remains a hub for Ottawa’s Italian community, the population has diversified over the years. Large communities of Polish and Ukrainian immigrants arrived in the years after WWII; more recently a significant number of people have immigrated to the area from China and Vietnam. There is also a healthy rotation of student residents attending nearby Carleton University. While Little Italy experienced a population decline of 15 per cent from 2011 to 2015, the highest decrease of any neighbourhood in Ottawa, it is seen as more of a growing pain in a rapidly developing community. The City of Ottawa explains much of the decrease as due to residential properties being bought up, emptied and fenced off for future high-rise developments. The area is in a serious phase of transition with old, residential housing on its way out, unprecedented condo developments coming in and major LRT connection is only one year away. The full scale of the condo boom is staggering, both in number and sheer scale. Preston OTTAWA 2017

Canadian values at play BY CATHERINE CLARK PHOTO BY TED SIMPSON

Giving Back @catherinejclark

Like most kids her age, eleven-year-old Amelia Singh knows a thing or two about playgrounds. So, when Amelia learned that she could volunteer to help build the largest playground in Canada as part of a Canada 150 project, she jumped at the opportunity. “I thought it would be really cool to build a playground for lots of people in my community,” explains Amelia. “I can say ‘I built that’ and people can use it for a long time to come.” The project was spearheaded by TVOntario children’s show Giver, which sees real kids learning about hard work and community engagement by helping to build playgrounds in their own Ontario neighbourhoods. It went CELEBRATING 150 YEARS

national in scope with kids coming from across the country to build a playground in the shape of Canada, filled with structures like a lighthouse, a log cabin and an Inukshuk to represent the country’s different regions. The pan-Canadian nature of the experience was clearly a highlight for Amelia. She worked on the Nunavut part of the playground with several other children: three from Ottawa, one from Toronto and two from Nunavut, which offered a cultural learning experience, too. “They go hunting in Nunavut, and they have no trees,” informs Amelia. Along with meeting new friends and learning about Canada, Amelia found the hands-on volunteer work tough to beat. “I got to use a spinning saw and I got to do stuff that professional people get to do,” she notes enthusiastically. Amelia’s mom, Viola Hoo, was impressed

by the community experience afforded the children who took part. “It was amazing to see all of the kids having fun together, and they all came for the joy of helping build a playground that everyone can play on, no matter their age or capability.” But what really stood out for Amelia was the chance to create something that would give long-term enjoyment to numerous other people, and she can’t wait for the official opening on July 1st. “Knowing I had a part in building the playground makes me feel happy,” she says. “I like the idea that I get to help other kids and I’m going to feel so proud and excited at the ribbon cutting.” It will be a Canada Day to remember for Amelia, born of a project which showed the power of kindness, respect and working together – real Canadian playground values at their best. LIVING Inspiration Village

INSIDE THE BOX BY ROCHELLE JAMES PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK HOLLERON

This summer the ByWard Market will be transformed into a hub of activity as Inspiration Village for Ottawa 2017 creates a new public space along York Street to celebrate the country’s sesquicentennial. Built out of 41 sea containers, many of which span 20 feet in length and weigh in at 5,071 pounds, Inspiration Village will bring together immersive and interactive experiences for tens of thousands of visitors to Ottawa. From May 20 through September 4, the Village will feature exhibits, demonstrations and performances. Architects and designers around the globe are transforming the blank canvases of sea containers into beautiful buildings, creative collaborative spaces and aesthetic artistic installations. “This is the first time that something like this has been done in Canada,” explains Gayle McClelland, Ottawa Project Lead, Inspiration Village, for Wendy Kane & Associates. “It has truly been a team effort from start to finish, from the initial brainstorming where small models were used to create potential layouts, to the final renderings, to onsite construction.” Leading the team of engineers for Inspiration Village was Matthew Main of the Ottawa-based firm Dymech Engineering Inc. Matthew, a Carleton graduate, oversaw the unique design that took more than one year to come to fruition and includes programming partners ranging from the RCMP, Ottawa School of Art, Carleton University, Algonquin College, the Ottawa Mission, World Wildlife Fund, and Tale of a Town. The regionally-themed containers, from Nunavut to Newfoundland and Labrador, provide a snapshot of the adventures available across Canada. For instance, visitors can find an authentic East Coast experience amongst the raw, natural beauty of Cape Breton. “Inspiration CELEBRATING 150 YEARS

Village is a completely unique opportunity and privilege to showcase Cape Breton,” says Mary Tule, CEO, Destination Cape Breton Association. “Even in today’s online and technical world, there is still nothing as powerful as face-toface interaction, and we are confident that throughout Inspiration Village this is going to be an unprecedented opportunity.” With the tag line ‘Your Heart Will Never Leave’, Destination Cape Breton Association has created an interior space that brings the very essence of Cape Breton to the nation’s capital. Mary explains that they researched what visitors are looking to experience when they come to Cape Breton and chose images that reflect that. A captivating backdrop of an eagle-eye view atop a dramatic headland cliff overlooking the rugged coast, vast ocean and winding Cabot Trail below makes visitors feel as though they have stepped into one of Cape Breton Highlands National Park’s gems, the world-renowned Skyline Trail. The largest of the installations belongs to Parks Canada, with a 60-foot horizontal container and two additional vertical containers. It showcases Canada’s incredible history, places and events, as well as presenting a Parks Canada oTENTik, the Red Chair program and a paddle-boarding experience. “Participating in Inspiration Village will

allow Parks Canada the opportunity to engage with a variety of Canadians including youth, families and young adults to inspire them to experience our country’s natural and cultural treasures first-hand,” says Meaghan Bradley, Communications Officer with Parks Canada. Much like the traditional Parks Canada experience, the container provides a gateway to nature, adventure and discovery through a series of activities. Divided into three areas using the theme Discover, Connect, Protect, the containers encourages visitation to a network of protected places and some of the Canada’s most spectacular landscapes. With 47 national parks, 171 national historic sites and four national marine conservation areas, there is a lot to discover, and Parks Canada staff are there to help visitors with trip planning and to participate in a photo booth experience that inspires Canadians to share their ideas and views of their dream country. “This year not only marks the 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation, but also the centennial of Canada’s historic sites,” explains Meaghan. “Our national historic sites reflect the rich and varied heritage of our nation and provide an opportunity for Canadians to learn more about our diverse history.” As Ottawa 2017’s longest-running Canada 150 event, Inspiration Village is the perfect occasion to come explore the nation’s capital and experience our vast and breathtaking country. CANADIAN HERITAGE BY MARY TAGGART PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK HOLLERON

The Municipality of Montebello in Quebec is home to approximately 1,000 residents living on the 8.36 square-kilometre stretch of land on the Ontario/Quebec border, just an hour’s drive from Ottawa. Many Ottawans make their way through the area en route to Mont Tremblant, but the town warrants far more than a drivethrough. Take a daytrip from Ottawa to sample artisanal delicacies like chocolates in the old train station at Chocomotive, and sip beer across the road at Brassard de Montebello. It’s a new microbrewery along Rue Notre Dame, the main street where a variety of shops and restaurants offer quality goods to appeal to year-round tourists.

CANADIAN SPIRIT Start the day at Parc Omega, 3km past Montebello. The Canadian wildlife safari provides much more than photo opportunities; it’s an interactive lesson in Canadian heritage. Of course, the COYOTE animals are a huge attraction with bears, wolves, elk, deer, moose and more, roaming the site in their natural habitat. Elk pop their heads into car windows and become particularly friendly when carrots are dangled in front of them. Drop into Park House at the beginning of your adventure to purchase carrots for your drive along the 12-km route. One of the more impressive RACOON areas within the Park is Trout TREE Lake, which is surrounded by CARVING 14 totem poles each reflecting the spirit of the eleven First Nations and their legends. Look for the work of artist Denis Charette, a veteran totem pole sculptor. Denis’ recent work will be his most noteworthy to date with the most significant totem ever erected in Quebec. The pole pays homage to the legendary mammoth and will be installed on site in late June. Park director Serge Lussier begins each day reflecting on the beauty of Canada that is represented within Parc Omega. “I look at the lake each morning and think about how lucky I am to be here,” he says. It’s a sentiment shared by Canadians across the country, and Parc Omega offers the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of our rugged land in a way that connects us to our roots. HOMEMADE GOODNESS Leo Lavallee and Chantal Ouellette purchased a rundown restaurant on Rue Notre Dame in 2015 pretty much sight unseen. They had each been working as chefs in Edmonton and were disillusioned with the food scene in a city that seemed to prefer pre-made over fresh, on-site fare. Their Montebello restaurant Le Café Entre Amis is rated number two among Quebec restaurants on Trip Advisor. The cheerful spot is welcoming with café-style décor offering comfortable seating and fresh homemade food. “Everything is made here, from the stocks, soups, sauces and entrées – there is nothing pre-made,” Leo boasts.

FILL THE HOUSE Bonheur De Passions is more than just a novelty gift shop. The house turned shop, at 588 Notre Dame, showcases creative table settings with linens, dishes and glassware to suit a variety LE CAFÉ of styles and tastes. With three ENTRE AMIS floors of goods, it would be easy to spend hours visiting each room to find just the right gift or piece of furnishing for the cottage or home. The basement level carries Christmas goods and provides room for a furniture repair shop too.

CHEESE PLEASE The Fromagerie Montebello is a destination all of its own. The small storefront carries local gourmet food products from maple syrup to jams, sauces, meats and pâté, while the back of the store is the cheese factory. Four varieties are produced on site: Rebellion, an artisanal blue cheese; Tête à Papineau, an earthy cow’s milk cheese; Manchebello, a sheep’s milk cheese; and Adoray, a soft cow’s milk cheese.

FROMAGERIE MONTEBELLO

RUSTIC LUXURY The world’s largest log cabin is nestled in the heart of Montebello, surrounded by natural beauty. The Fairmont Chateau Montebello is a year-round resort, but summer offers great charms with water sports, tennis, golf and more. This year promises to offer a truly Canadian experience in celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary. The bountiful Sunday brunch is considered a tradition and carries regional food, decadent sweets and abundant flavours that will make the pleasant drive worthwhile. LIVING Step Inside

OTTAWA,

proud & strong

BY VERA CODY PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK HOLLERON

Jantine Van Kregten grew up in Amherstburg, Ontario which is almost as far south as you can get in Canada. A small-town girl interested in politics and learning how government works, she visited Ottawa in grade 12 as part of the Forum for Young Canadians, where she met Members of Parliament, Senators and toured the Supreme Court. This trip made such a lasting impression on her that Jantine chose to study political science at the University of Ottawa. After graduating in 1992, she worked in local politics for city councillors and later moved into a new career with the ByWard Market Business Improvement Area, becoming its Executive Director in 1998. Five years later, Jantine was hired as Director of Communications/Media Relations for Ottawa Tourism to promote Ottawa nationally and internationally as a tourist destination. Hosting travel media from around the world, she enjoys seeing Ottawa through their eyes and assisting them with their research in liaison with Destination Canada and Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership. CELEBRATING 150 YEARS

OAH-SUMMER 2017_INSIDE PAGES.indd 57

As an unabashed fan of Ottawa, Jantine is passionate about selling a product she believes in and knows Ottawa inside out, but is always looking to discover something new. On Saturday afternoons, she is usually at her happy place, the Chateau Lafayette, sipping a craft beer and enjoying the country music show of Lucky Ron. 2017 is a busy year in Ottawa, and Jantine continues to love her job in a city where she came to study and never left. HAVE YOUR INITIAL IMPRESSIONS OF OTTAWA EVOLVED? The biggest change I have seen is in Ottawans themselves. There was a time where people had a chip on their shoulder believing they lived in the shadow of Toronto and Montreal. Today Ottawans are proud of who they are and no longer look over their shoulder to see what is going on somewhere else. Ottawa is doing its Ottawa thing and not worried about what anybody else thinks. We are not the teenagers that we were, we are comfortable adults now. The eyes of the world are on us as this is going to be the place to be in 2017. HOW INTENSIVE WAS THE PLANNING FOR OTTAWA 2017? It definitely did not sneak up on Ottawa Tourism with thanks to

Mayor Jim Watson and Executive Director of Ottawa 2017, Guy Laflamme. We have been talking about this for years. Convention planners have forty-five booked conventions in 2017 compared to fourteen two years ago. Ottawa has it nailed in terms of planning for this year. No where else in the country has a full year’s worth of celebrations that will knock people’s socks off. WHAT ARE OTTAWA’S STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES FROM A TOURISM PERSPECTIVE? We are very competitive in terms of our exploding culinary scene, craft beer, and variety of hotel accommodations. There is great excitement for all the planned events for 2017, but many of our new attractions like the Science and Technology Museum, the Arctic Gallery in the Museum of Nature, the Bank of Canada Museum, and the transformed National Arts Centre will live beyond 2017. We can always do better with international air access. It would be beneficial to have more direct flights to Ottawa, but it is all a numbers game where you have to hit certain targets. We certainly have grown over the years and I think we are getting there. ANYTHING EXCITING COMING FOR 2018? We have a unique new product launching next May called Le Boat where you rent a luxury boat and can travel the full length of the Rideau Canal. There are a variety of boat options for a romantic getaway or entertaining your family and friends. You can customize your itinerary and dock when you want and access towns like Merrickville, Smiths Falls, Westport and Kingston, all the way to downtown Ottawa. WHAT HAS BEEN A HIGHLIGHT WORKING FOR OTTAWA TOURISM? The New York Times travel section article, 36 Hours in Ottawa, that was published in January brought tremendous exposure for our city. Many times, visiting journalists work with the planned itineraries we create for them and we cover some of their costs. But The New York Times has very strict rules about comps. We met with the author and recommended a few suggestions that made their way into the article and the end result was a piece that showcased Ottawa as a city you definitely want to visit. FOOD Dining Out

Brunch done well is a perfect blend of flavours, meant to be enjoyed in a relaxed setting, with copious cups of coffee, tea or perhaps something a little stronger. This summer venture out to explore a new spot or two, since Ottawa has so many great possibilities when it comes to everyone’s favourite mid-morning to mid-afternoon meal.

ALICE’S VILLAGE CAFÉ

ALICE’S VILLAGE CAFÉ Whether you choose to drive or cycle there – it’s a pleasant half-hour ride from downtown – the village of Carp is a great destination and Alice’s Village Café is a charming brunch spot. It can be tricky to be the new owners of a beloved spot, but Melanie Ruest and Todd Hirtle have preserved the warm, welcoming feel of Alice’s that contributes to it being regarded as Carp’s community hub. Alice’s many brunch possibilities include classic breakfast plates as well as scrumptious breakfast sandwiches, wraps, waffles, soups, scones, muffins and more. You can bolster your meal with a selection of side dishes and excellent coffee supplied by Almonte’s Equator Coffee CELEBRATING 150 YEARS

OAH-SUMMER 2017_INSIDE PAGES.indd 59

Roasters, plus gluten-free baked goods from Almonte’s Sweet Cheeks Kitchen. Not to be missed is their outstanding and wildly popular cinnamon bun, affectionately called the Big Nasty. Meals, prepared by Chopped Canada winning chef Derek Pennell, are served inside the cozy 55-seat café or in one of the two generous seating areas outdoors. Their breakfast menu is served weekdays until 11 a.m. and weekends until 2 p.m. but visiting on a weekday along with the locals is recommended to avoid waiting in line with weekend diners who also come to visit the nearby Farmers’ Market or the Diefenbunker. (3773 Carp Road; alicesvillagecafe.com).

ST MARTHA’S BRASSERIE D’ORLEANS AND ST. MARTHA’S CULINAIRE D’ORLEANS Some of the best brunch options in the east are served up at St. Martha’s two locations. Offering breakfast Monday through Friday and a special brunch menu on weekends, both the Brasserie and the Culinaire take pride in menus which feature a range of pleasing options and cater to those with gluten sensitivities. At the Brasserie, brunch focuses

ST MARTHA’S BRASSERIE

more on traditional comfort food, with challah-based crème brûlée pain doré (French toast), omelettes and their famous petit dejeuner St Marthe (an inventive take on eggs Benedict with creamy demiglace instead of hollandaise sauce). Culinaire’s menu offers an additional brunch speciality in the form of castiron skillet casseroles served piping hot, freshly baked in their pizza oven. Each one features sautéed onions, home fries and eggs, with such delicious add-ins as beef brisket and mushrooms, locally-smoked ham and Gruyère, grilled chicken and salsa verde or, for vegetarians, arugula, cherry tomatoes and mushrooms. Both St. Martha’s locations feature patios as well as generous indoor seating, including theatre seating with great views into the kitchen at the Culinaire. Insiders suggest arriving after noontime on weekends at the Brasserie to avoid the rush, while 9 a.m. at the Culinaire should beat the crowds. (503 - 3095 St. Joseph Boulevard and 2284 Tenth Line Road; goodfoodservedwell.com).

FLAPJACK’S CANADIAN DINER - LITTLE ITALY You don’t have to wear plaid to enjoy brunch at Flapjack’s, but it would certainly fit in well with the cheerful, rustic décor. Flapjack’s began as a food truck on Bank Street, opening its current Little Italy location in 2015. The popularity of its all-day breakfast offerings is SUMMER 2017 ottawaathome.ca 59

just one of reasons expansion plans are in the works. Menu options range from healthy granola and yogurt parfaits served in canning jars, to the decadent Flapjack’s plate with eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, home fry poutine, toast and buttermilk pancakes. Their fabulous waffles are huge sellers, along with their famous buttermilk and oatmeal pancakes. Canadian culinary pride shines through in Flapjack’s breakfast poutine and three styles of “EH’ggs Benny,” as well as buttermilk-battered deep-fried bacon or sausages, served with maple syrup for dunking. Lumberjacks, or any hungry folk, will love their brunch Lumburger with cheddar, bacon, sunnyside-up egg and hollandaise sauce or the Benny Mash featuring mushrooms, onions, spinach, bacon and sausage

scrambled with potatoes, topping with cheddar, hollandaise and two steamed eggs. The menu includes gluten-sensitive options and selections for vegetarians. Even with 40 seats indoors and more on the patio, Flapjack’s often has lineups, making weekday early afternoons the best time to grab a table without waiting. (354A Preston Street; flapjacks.ca).

CHESTERFIELD’S GASTRO DINER West Wellington Village is home to lots of eateries, and Chesterfield’s Gastro Diner is among the friendliest. Calling itself a “not so greasy spoon,” delicious all-day breakfasts are prepared primarily using a steam induction oven, ensuring a healthier menu overall. Cheerful staff ferry plates to diners seated on mismatched chesterfields and chairs. Tapas-style brunch offerings

include traditional eggs, eggs Benedict or breakfast pies (their version of omelettes) with a dazzling array of complementary sides including roasted potatoes, tomato and cucumber salad, vegetarian baked beans, soup, toast with homemade jam and more. For a toonie you can add such options as a fruit bowl or breakfast poutine. This mix-and-match approach makes it easy to accommodate a wide range of dietary preferences. Other options include a flavourful Israeli breakfast, consisting of Shakshuka eggs with smoked Gouda, and appropriate accompaniments. Steak hash with eggs is very popular and many servings of chicken and waffles, French toast and breakfast sliders are also delivered daily to appreciative diners. The menu changes frequently at Chesterfield’s, according to whatever owners Dominique and Demian feel like eating. Best time to arrive on weekends is before 9 a.m. or after 1:30 p.m. to beat the crowds. (1433 Wellington Street West; gastrodiner.ca).

FOOD Let’s Dish also a chance to showcase their heritage. Ottawa At Home spoke with Rehab to learn about her new venture and what makes Syrian food a standout in the world of Middle Eastern cuisine. HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN INTERESTED IN FOOD? I have always liked eating, but this was not my original career path. The mood changes, you know! I worked in the computer science field before buying the Portuguese Bakery in 2009.

Syrian Kitchen owner Rehab Adas.

CULINARY HERITAGE BY PAULA ROY PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK HOLLERON

Check out the restaurant or food shop listings for almost any town across Canada and you’ll quickly appreciate one of the greatest benefits of living in an extremely welcoming, diverse country. The wide range of international foods available here serves as a delicious manifestation of our cherished cultural mosaic; it’s something worth celebrating during Canada’s 150th year. Ottawa’s culinary scene has definitely been shaped by the many immigrants who have settled here, bringing their food 64 ottawaathome.ca SUMMER 2017

OAH-SUMMER 2017_INSIDE PAGES.indd 64

traditions with them. Now, there’s a new taste sensation in town, thanks to one enterprising local woman. Rehab Adas – who has called Ottawa home for almost three decades – opened the Syrian Kitchen as an offshoot of her Lowertown Portuguese Bakery last November to serve up the fresh, healthy food she first enjoyed during her childhood in Syria. She proudly employs newly-arrived Syrians, offering them not only the opportunity of employment, but

DID MEMORIES FROM YOUR CHILDHOOD IN SYRIA INFLUENCE YOUR DESIRE TO OPEN THE RESTAURANT? Yes! I remember happy times when the whole family was in the kitchen making food together. That’s one of the big reasons why I wanted to open Syrian Kitchen – to help others preserve their own memories and keep their food traditions alive. No one was making Syrian food in Ottawa, and I thought it would be a good way for people here to get to know about Syrian culture and think about our country in a different way than just a place of war. Plus, by employing new Syrian immigrants, I felt it was a great way to emphasize that these people truly want to build lives here and become part of the community. HOW IS DOES SYRIAN FOOD FIT IN THE LANDSCAPE OF MIDDLE EASTERN CUISINE? Syrian food is probably most similar to Lebanese – the two countries share a border and many similarities when it comes to food. I would say that Lebanese cuisine tends to focus more on the design and the way the food looks, whereas Syrian cuisine is all about the taste. Ours is one of the oldest cooking OTTAWA 2017

2017-05-31 1:00 PM

traditions in the world and Syria is often described as having the “most famous kitchen” in all the Middle East. HOW DID YOU CHOOSE WHAT DISHES TO OFFER ON YOUR SYRIAN KITCHEN MENU? I asked my regular Portuguese Bakery customers what they liked to eat and many said falafel, tabouli and baba ghanoush, so we offer all of those along with other traditional Syrian favourites. We also sell a fantastic eggplant dip that’s a little different – it’s made with roasted eggplant, tomato, green pepper, parsley and lemon juice. Even people who claim they don’t like eggplant love it – this summer, we’re going to try making it with barbequed eggplant for a bit of a smoky flavour. I am hoping to add Syrian shawarma to the menu one day as it is a little different than what people have probably tasted before and really delicious. HAS IT BEEN EASY TO FIND SYRIANS TO WORK IN YOUR KITCHEN? I have hired three Syrians since we opened, including Mohammed, our chef, who came to Canada on the first planeload of immigrants in December 2015. He has trained others and we reach out to the Syrian community for extra help when we are especially busy. I never have any trouble finding Syrians who are ready to work. DO YOU HAVE PLANS TO EXPAND THE SYRIAN KITCHEN? I am hoping to grow the wholesale side of the business and am in the process of finding more stores to carry our products. The Herb and Spice, Produce Depot, the Hintonburg Marché and Perfection Satisfaction Promise were quick to give us shelf space and that has helped more people get to know about the Syrian Kitchen. I’d also like to expand the menu and purchase some industrial equipment for the kitchen so we can prepare food in larger quantities. We are also doing more and more catering all the time, for government departments and private parties. But I am being careful; I like to start small and go step by step. CELEBRATING 150 YEARS

CHERRY PIE cookie bars

Paula’s Bites @paulajroy

Everyone loves the flavour of pie, but not the fuss of making it. These delicious, and not too sweet, cookie bars are the perfect easy-to-bake summertime treat. The spiced shortbread works well as the bottom and top layers, sandwiching the cherry pie filling nicely in the middle. You can make a panful ahead of time, then cut into bars and freeze so they’ll be ready for your next picnic or backyard cookout. CHERRY PIE FILLING 4 cups (600 g) pitted and coarselychopped fresh or frozen sweet cherries 1/4 cup (60 mL) honey 1 tbsp (15 mL) freshly-squeezed lemon juice 3 tbsp (45 mL) cornstarch 1/8 tsp (0.65 mL) pure almond extract

SHORTBREAD CRUST AND TOPPING 3 cups (750 mL) all-purpose flour 3/4 cup (175 mL) icing sugar 1/2 tsp (2.5 mL) ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp (1.25 mL) freshly-grated nutmeg 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) salted butter, at room temperature

METHOD • Put chopped cherries, honey, lemon juice and cornstarch in a large saucepan. Stir to combine well, then place the pot over medium heat. Cook, stirring often, until the filling is bubbling and has thickened and turned glossy, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in almond extract. Set aside to cool. • Line a 9 x 13 baking pan with parchment paper, allowing parchment to drape over the sides of the pan to form ‘handles’ and set aside. Preheat oven to 350F. • In a medium bowl, blend together flour, icing sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Cut butter into 1 inch (2.5 cm) square pieces, then use a pastry blender or two knives to cut into mixture until it resembles coarse sand. This can also be done in a food processor, pulse mixture for 1-2 minutes. • Spread half the shortbread mixture in the bottom of the prepared pan and press down gently with a spatula. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes then remove pan from the oven and spread the cherry-pie filling evenly across the baked bottom crust. Top evenly with remaining shortbread mixture and gently press topping down with a spatula so it will adhere to the cherry layer. • Bake for an additional 28-30 minutes, until topping is golden brown and cherry filling is bubbling. • Remove pan from oven and let cool completely on a wire rack. • To serve, lift out of the pan using parchment paper handles. Cut into bars about 1 x 2 inches and serve at room temperature, topped with a dusting of icing sugar. • Store bars in an airtight container on the counter for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to 6 months.

LIVING Back Story

Ottawa’s LOST VALLEY BY ANDREW KING

Andrew King @twitandrewking

Back in high school, I drove the old Prescott Highway from Kingston to Ottawa in my ’73 VW Beetle, passing by a curious diner on my way to an interview at Carleton University. The white building was called the Green Valley Restaurant, and it looked like it was part of some classic 1950s movie set. It would later burn to the ground, its glory days long gone and forgotten. Now an empty parking lot at the traffic-congested corner of Prince of Wales and Baseline, this spot has a fascinating history as being the location of Ottawa’s little rental cottages on the forested outskirts of the city. In the 1930s Waldorf Stewart moved to a remote wooded property on the old Prescott Highway where he built a play cabin for his daughter near his newlyconstructed home. The rustic play cabin was soon visited by tourists thinking it was a Motor Court cabin rental, a type of accommodation that was springing up all over North America. Realizing an opportunity when he saw one, and with tourists now driving everywhere, he speculated they would need a place to

TOURIST ATTRACTION Roadside cabins attracted tourists in the 1940’s when car travel was increasing in popularity

stay. So he built a few more little cottage cabins and opened the Green Valley Tourist Court, renting them to tired travelers on their only way into the nation’s capital from the south. By 1947 Stewart expanded his tourism empire, on what used to be “the outskirts” of the city, by opening a modest diner to serve breakfast and evening meals to his rental cabin customers. With 24 cabins, Stewart thought the motel and diner would only be open for the summer tourist season, but the Green Valley Restaurant gained notoriety for its hospitable service and quality food after he hired Chef Gustave, formerly from the Engineer’s Club in Montreal. After only a short period of time, the Green Valley became one of Ottawa’s premiere dining destinations. The restaurant was expanded three

times and included a gift shop called the “Then and Now Shop” where visitors could purchase toys, souvenirs and curious gadgets. Kids especially enjoyed the “Mickey Mouse” sundaes that the restaurant served to its younger diners, a cartoon dessert involving a scoop of ice cream with wafer ears and pistachio eyes. I recall, after getting my first real paycheque in Ottawa, picking a place to treat myself to dinner, and it was that little diner I first saw when I drove into Ottawa years before. The place had a musty smell reminiscent of an old landmark that sat tired and empty. It was staffed by servers who had probably worked there since it first opened, and still wore their original uniforms. The furniture was worn, the food was bland, but you could sense it was once THE place to eat in Ottawa. With other restaurants emerging in the 1990s, the Green Valley got left behind to new dining trends, its former grandeur tarnished by the hands of time.
