Greeting Messages Greetings Welcome to the 2012 Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival, a festival proud to support our very own Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation. 2012 is proving to be another incredible year of growth for us and we’re thrilled to host another great event for our community. Our Paddling for People campaign has really heated up as well, and this year we hope to raise more than ever for the seven amazing charities we’re working with. The exceptional corporate and government support over the past number of years has allowed us to grow to a point of capacity. We sold out a full month early this year and are attempting for the first time to increase our team maximum to 204 teams. With over 400 volunteers, 65 sponsors, all three levels of government support, an amazing board of directors and staff, and countless people who simply help make all of this happen; our little free festival is not so little anymore! Our free live entertainment will run until 11:00PM on both Friday and Saturday, and we cannot wait to host our parade of champions Friday evening before the opening ceremony. Thank you to the 1000’s of people that touch our festival in so many ways. Next year is our 20th anniversary and we cannot wait to share the plans for that one! John Brooman – CEO, As Chair of the 2012 Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival, it is my honour and great pleasure to welcome all of you to our 19th annual festival. Once again we have seen record team registration and sponsor support and I would like to especially acknowledge the support of our Title Sponsor Tim Hortons, our Presenting Sponsor Scotiabank and our Diamond Sponsor Minto, as well as the City of Ottawa and Parks Canada which provide us with a first class racing venue. It also goes

without saying that the Festival would not be possible without the continued support of our numerous other sponsors and suppliers, many of who have been with us from the very beginning. For the hundreds of people that make the Festival happen each year, it has truly become a labour of love for all of us. This is especially true of our staff, board of directors, volunteers and paddlers who all help to make the Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival the biggest and best festival of its kind in North America. On behalf of everyone who makes the Festival happen, paddles up and have a great race weekend! Martin Vervoort – Festival Chair In just a few short years the paddlers of the Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival have raised 2.5 million dollars for 29 local charities. The boards of the Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation and Festival would like to thank all of the individuals and teams who have made these significant contributions to the Pledge Challenge. We believe we can do more in 2012. This year we have launched an ambitious goal to raise $500,000 for the seven charities our paddlers are supporting. Through our “This is Why I Paddle” campaign we are connecting our charities and our paddlers with the great community we live in. Whether you are pledging a paddler in their efforts, buying a raffle ticket or wearing a “Paddling for People” bracelet you are doing your part. Together your donations make a huge difference to our recipient charities and the people they serve. Thank you teams! Thank you paddlers! Thank you our supporters! Sandy Foote – Foundation Chair

Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation The Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation was created courtesy of our many paddlers who began raising funds for local charities through the Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival on an annual basis. Since 1998, paddlers have raised $2.5 million to help build, strengthen and enhance community life in Ottawa by funding 29 charitable organizations. For more information on the Foundation, please e-mail Foundation@DragonBoat.net.

The Pledge Challenge The Pledge Challenge is an opportunity for our supporters to raise funds for local charities. In 2012, the Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation goal is $500,000 to support a total of seven local charities through a 3-tier system. Please support a paddler, a team or the Foundation directly. Visit www.dragonboatfoundation.net or the Collins Barrow Pledge Tent during the Festival on Friday or Saturday for more information or to make a donation.

Recipient Charities Tier One is comprised of a single, larger charity that receives $50,000. Our 2012, Tier One charity is the Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa Charitable Foundation. Youth Services Bureau supports Ottawa’s youth and families in the challenges they face every day. Our accessible services build a brighter future for tens of thousands of young people who are in crisis, struggling with mental health issues, at risk and living in poverty. Paddlers fundraise so that the 1 in 5 youth living with mental health issues can get help now. Tier Two charities (3) will each be given $30,000 at this level including: ArtsSmarts, Bruyère Foundation, and CHEO Foundation.

A total of $30,000 will be disbursed to each of the three charities selected at this level. Tier Two charities are: ArtsSmarts, Bruyere Foundation, and CHEO Foundation.

Tier Three charities (3) including the Debra Dynes Family House, the Ottawa Humane Society, the University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research (IMHR) will receive $20,000.

Your support will help advance faster and more effective diagnoses and treatments and a future of significantly reduced deaths by suicide.

Silent Auction for Charity

ArtsSmarts is a dynamic approach to generating and sustaining innovative school partnerships centered around the arts. We seek to push the boundaries of learning, redefine the environment of schooling and re-imagine student success. Working in partnership with MASC, ArtsSmarts has been experienced by children and youth in classrooms across the National Capital Region since 1998.

The Debra Dynes Family House is committed to improving the quality of life for multiculturally diverse families, children and youth who are low income and working poor, through a range of services and programs that are community driven and meet their needs. Each day approximately, 150 people access the Family House. There are approximately 800 people in the immediate community of Debra Dynes, 500 of them are children and youth.

Bruyère Continuing Care is the champion for aging Canadians and those requiring Continuing Care, helping them become and remain as healthy and independent as possible through innovative and compassionate care, research, education and advocacy. Bruyère Continuing Care is an essential part of the continuum of health care in our community. It complements the services provided by other facilities and health care providers, and helps ensure patients and residents experience positive transitions from one type of care to another and, whenever possible, back into the community.

The Ottawa Humane Society (OHS) rescues and cares for 11,000 neglected, abused, stray and homeless animals every year. Our goal is to be a leader in the humane treatment of animals, by providing immediate care to the animals of today, and creating a brighter future for the animals of tomorrow. We also work in the community by teaching children responsibility, compassion and respect for animals, working with at-risk populations to empower self-esteem and promote the human-animal bond, and by making animal visits possible for those in our community who might not have access otherwise.

The CHEO Foundation raises funds to support the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, a health care centre dedicated to providing comprehensive care to children and youth in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. The Foundation also gives funding to the CHEO Research Institute where vital pediatric research projects are conducted. One such area of research is the Healthy Active Living and Obesity Research Group (HALO) which provides national leadership and research excellence for the prevention and treatment of obesity in children and youth.

Mental illnesses represent the leading causes of disabilities worldwide yet Canada spends less than 5% on mental health research. The U. of O. Institute of Mental Health Research (IMHR) at The Royal is one of Canada's leading mental health research centres. In strong partnership with the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group, the IMHR strives to continuously improve mental health and well-being through leadership, collaborative discoveries and innovation in research, patient care and education. The IMHR's #1 objective is to establish a world-class Centre for Depression Research.

The Silent Auction event, held during the Festival, is an opportunity for everyone to support our 7 local charities. Please stop by the Silent Auction tent during the weekend and bid on our packages to help us reach our $10,000 goal in this event. Hark The Herons - 11:30 AM www.harktheherons.com It’s good to revel in life’s rare occurrences. Finding a twenty in your jacket pocket, getting lost only to realise you’ve found a shortcut, or spotting a small herd of deer in a field as you speed by nearly oblivious. It’s these occurrences that help us to occasionally surface from the mire of the routine, to realise

The Acorn – 4:00 PM www.theacorn.ca Anchored by vivid songwriting and eclectic instrumentation, The Acorn produce an original brand of experimental, popular folk

music that effortlessly marries modern and traditional forms. They were nominated for the 2008 Polaris Award, and were invited on a US tour with Tuscon AZ legends, Calexico. 2009 saw the band tour Europe 4 times opening for the likes of Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes and opening a large-scale UK tour for Mercury Prize winners ELBOW, climaxing at London's Wembley Arena. Ottawa’s love affair with their local heroes has long been documented and we couldn’t be more pleased to have them at the festival. David Martel – 2:00 PM www.iamdavidmartel.com After the release of his first solo album, I Hardly Knew Me, Montrealer David Martel came back into the spotlight with a new 4song EP called You've Heard The Best! David is currently working on a highly-anticipated, new full-length album set for release in 2013.

Grenadine - 1:00 PM Grenadine is the solo project of Julie Brunet, who has accompanied Coeur de Pirate on stage, among others. Julie is a classically trained musician. She began playing the violin at age eight and studied viola at the Conservatory of Music in Montreal. She recently split her time between her studies in archeology and various tours in France and in Quebec as she prepares a full album for 2012. The Unsettlers - 12:00 PM www.theunsettlers.ca An eleven-piece band of time-traveling troubadours, based in Montreal The Unsettlers specialize in dark polkas, menacing waltzes, horse-drawn lullabies and funeral dirges for the living - all filtered through the creaking floorboards of a whiskey-soaked saloon.
