Greeting Messages Greetings Welcome to the 2012 Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival, a festival proud to support our very own Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation. 2012 is proving to be another incredible year of growth for us and we’re thrilled to host another great event for our community. Our Paddling for People campaign has really heated up as well, and this year we hope to raise more than ever for the seven amazing charities we’re working with. The exceptional corporate and government support over the past number of years has allowed us to grow to a point of capacity. We sold out a full month early this year and are attempting for the first time to increase our team maximum to 204 teams. With over 400 volunteers, 65 sponsors, all three levels of government support, an amazing board of directors and staff, and countless people who simply help make all of this happen; our little free festival is not so little anymore! Our free live entertainment will run until 11:00PM on both Friday and Saturday, and we cannot wait to host our parade of champions Friday evening before the opening ceremony. Thank you to the 1000’s of people that touch our festival in so many ways. Next year is our 20th anniversary and we cannot wait to share the plans for that one! This is especially true of our staff, board of directors, volunteers and paddlers who all help to make the Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival the biggest and best festival of its kind in North America. We believe we can do more in 2012. This year we have launched an ambitious goal to raise $500,000 for the seven charities our paddlers are supporting. Through our “This is Why I Paddle” campaign we are connecting our charities and our paddlers with the great community we live in. FAQ Where is the Festival? The Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival is held at Mooney's Bay Park on Riverside Drive. Mooney's Bay Park is located 1 1/2 kms north of Riverside Drive and Baseline Road intersection. The Park is 1/2 km north of Riverside Drive and Walkley Road intersection. Riverside Drive is accessible directly from the Queensway (Highway 417). Look for the Riverside South exit. Where can I park? During the festival free off-site parking is available at Carleton University Lot # 7, and the Canada Post Headquarters (Riverside Drive & Heron Rd). PLEASE NOTE: There is no public parking available on-site. Parking will not be available at Mooney's Bay or on Riverside Drive on the weekend of the Festival. Cars parked illegally in the surrounding areas will be ticketed and/or towed. Are there busses to the Festival? During the festival there are OC Transpo Shuttle Busses. The shuttle stops are at the Rideau Centre /Mackenzie King Bridge Upper Deck, with stops at Metcalf & Albert, Bronson & Somerset and at Carleton University Lot # 7 (Bronson & University). Is there a fee to attend the festival? No, there is no site admission fee and it is open to the public. Is there entertainment on site? Yes, there are a number of world class concerts at the festival each year. Please visit the entertainment section for more info. Is this a family event? Yes, we offer various family/children focused activities in the Tim Hortons Children’s Area. Please visit the entertainment section for more info. Can I park my bicycle on site? Free bicycle parking is available on site. Help us help the environment and consider riding your bike to this year’s festival. Can I bring my dog? No, Mooney's Bay Park is a dog-free zone. Is there somewhere I can put my stuff during the day? No, there are no lockers available on site. We recommend leaving all valuables at home. When does the racing start? Races begin at 8:00pm on Friday and continue at 7:00am on both Saturday and Sunday. Racing will finish up around 6pm on Saturday and 4pm on Sunday.

What happens if it starts raining? The festival and racing will go ahead if it is raining. Generally, the only time the racing is postponed is if lightning or high winds occur. Where is the best view of the races? Bleachers will be available on the beach area near the finish line to allow spectators an opportunity to view the entire race from start to finish. When is the Opening Ceremony? The Opening Ceremony will be held at approximately 7:00pm in the Main Tent on Friday, June 22nd, 2012. When are the Award Ceremonies? The awards will be given out throughout the day on Saturday and final awards will be given out on Sunday evening during the Closing Ceremony at approximately 4:00pm.

RULES & REGULATIONS NO OUTSIDE ALCOHOL ALLOWED ON SITE: Alcohol is only allowed in the designated beer garden areas and main tent area. No alcohol is permitted in the team tent area or anywhere else in Mooney's Bay Park. NO SMOKING ALLOWED ON SITE: The Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival is proud to be a non-smoking event. NO BBQs ALLOWED ON SITE

Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation The Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation was created courtesy of our many paddlers who began raising funds for local charities through the Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival on an annual basis. Since 1998, paddlers have raised $2.5 million to help build, strengthen and enhance community life in Ottawa by funding 29 charitable organizations. The Pledge Challenge The Pledge Challenge is an opportunity for our supporters to raise funds for local charities. In 2012, the Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation goal is $500,000 to support a total of seven local charities through a 3-tier system. Please support a paddler, a team or the Foundation directly. Visit www.dragonboatfoundation.net or the Collins Barrow Pledge Tent during the Festival on Friday or Saturday for more information or to make a donation.

Recipient Charities Tier One is comprised of a single, larger charity that receives $50,000. Our 2012, Tier One charity is the Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa Charitable Foundation. Youth Services Bureau supports Ottawa’s youth and families in the challenges they face every day. Our accessible services build a brighter future for tens of thousands of young people who are in crisis, struggling with mental health issues, at risk and living in poverty. Paddlers fundraise so that the 1 in 5 youth living with mental health issues can get help now. Tier Two charities (3) will each be given $30,000 at this level including: ArtsSmarts, Bruyère Foundation, and CHEO Foundation.

A total of $30,000 will be disbursed to each of the three charities selected at this level. Tier Two charities are: ArtsSmarts, Bruyere Foundation, and CHEO Foundation.

Tier Three charities (3) including the Debra Dynes Family House, the Ottawa Humane Society, the University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research (IMHR) will receive $20,000.

Your support will help advance faster and more effective diagnoses and treatments and a future of significantly reduced deaths by suicide.

Silent Auction for Charity

ArtsSmarts is a dynamic approach to generating and sustaining innovative school partnerships centered around the arts. We seek to push the boundaries of learning, redefine the environment of schooling and re-imagine student success. Working in partnership with MASC, ArtsSmarts has been experienced by children and youth in classrooms across the National Capital Region since 1998.

The Debra Dynes Family House is committed to improving the quality of life for multiculturally diverse families, children and youth who are low income and working poor, through a range of services and programs that are community driven and meet their needs. Each day approximately, 150 people access the Family House. There are approximately 800 people in the immediate community of Debra Dynes, 500 of them are children and youth.

Bruyère Continuing Care is the champion for aging Canadians and those requiring Continuing Care, helping them become and remain as healthy and independent as possible through innovative and compassionate care, research, education and advocacy. Bruyère Continuing Care is an essential part of the continuum of health care in our community. It complements the services provided by other facilities and health care providers, and helps ensure patients and residents experience positive transitions from one type of care to another and, whenever possible, back into the community.

The Ottawa Humane Society (OHS) rescues and cares for 11,000 neglected, abused, stray and homeless animals every year. Our goal is to be a leader in the humane treatment of animals, by providing immediate care to the animals of today, and creating a brighter future for the animals of tomorrow. We also work in the community by teaching children responsibility, compassion and respect for animals, working with at-risk populations to empower self-esteem and promote the human-animal bond, and by making animal visits possible for those in our community who might not have access otherwise.

The CHEO Foundation raises funds to support the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, a health care centre dedicated to providing comprehensive care to children and youth in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. The Foundation also gives funding to the CHEO Research Institute where vital pediatric research projects are conducted. One such area of research is the Healthy Active Living and Obesity Research Group (HALO) which provides national leadership and research excellence for the prevention and treatment of obesity in children and youth.

Mental illnesses represent the leading causes of disabilities worldwide yet Canada spends less than 5% on mental health research. The U. of O. Institute of Mental Health Research (IMHR) at The Royal is one of Canada's leading mental health research centres. In strong partnership with the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group, the IMHR strives to continuously improve mental health and well-being through leadership, collaborative discoveries and innovation in research, patient care and education. The IMHR's #1 objective is to establish a world-class Centre for Depression Research.

The Silent Auction event, held during the Festival, is an opportunity for everyone to support our 7 local charities. David is currently working on a highly-anticipated, new full-length album set for release in 2013.
