football preview Otterbein Coach Moe Agler has been rebuilding the Cardinal football fortunes since his return as head coach in 1970. Rebuilding takes time in football and it also takes its toll in the loss column. Otterbein teams have paid the price of rebuilding (3-6 in ’70 and 3-6 in ’71) and now Agler feels the Cardinals are due for better days. The Cardinal coach has almost an entire squad returning, many of them with two years experience. Only seven lettermen were lost through gradua tion, while 35 return. Of those 35, 17 are starters from last season. “Our young players made mental errors last year which lost games for us,” Agler said. “But we’ll be much improved this year, and should be a real contender for anyone on our schedule.” The offensive thrust of last year’s Cardinal squad returns: senior co captains Doug Thomson, halfback and Steve Traylor, split end. Junior punter, Leif Pettersen, who set an Otterbein punting record last year, also returns. Agler beams when he talks of his two co-captains, offensive leaders the last two seasons. “Thomson’s one of the best backs in the conference and Traylor’s the top receiver in the league**, the Cardinal coach said. Indeed, Thomson is on his way to becoming Otterbein’s top all-time rusher. Gaining 859 yeards (Otterbein’s season record) as a sophomore and 691 yards last season, this Canadian strongman (Oakville, Ontario) needs only 353 yards to break the Otterbein career rushing record of 1902 yards, set by Gary Allen, 1959-61. Thomson did have knee surgery last spring, but the doctor’s report is good. Steve Traylor, a Westerville native, caught 28 passes for 553 yards and 4 TD’s and came close to the Cardinal season record for yardage by a re ceiver (614 yards). Finishing third among the NCAA’s college division top ten punters, Leif Pettersen established his 41.8 yard punting average as a school record last season. Flis best boot was 72 yards, topping all Ohio Athletic Conference punters. The Cardinal passing attack was the third best in the OAC last season (1129 yards) and senior Greg Miller (572 yards) is back. Also making a strong bid for the position is junior Jim Bontadelli, a good running quar terback. Both Miller and Bontadelli alternated with the graduated jerry Elliott last season, so both men have plenty of game experience. Complementing Doug Thomson in the backfield will be sophomore Jim Cox, left half, who saw considerable action as a freshman. Jim, the fastest man on the squad, had the best rushing average last year, 4.4 yards. Wayne Blevins, a junior who rushed for 215 yards in 1971, will open at fullback.

An experienced offensive line returns with Joe Smith, center, guards Doug Fields and Tom Cahill. Starting tackles will be sophomores, Scott McDaniel (6’5”, 230) and Roy Kolotylo (6’5”, 235). Both played last year, but still need experience. Traylor and Dan Fagan will handle the receiving. Defensively, the Cardinals return with a strong line, featuring ends Les Donehue, Dale Chittum and Bill Spooner; tackles Mike Shannon and Larry Schultz are also lettermen. Rick Romer, a transfer from Miami, Florida last year will be eligible this year and will start as middle guard. Linebacker will be a question mark, but Robin Rushton, Dough Rid ding and joe Szima all have defensive experience. The secondary is led by junior Ed Flartung, veteran cornerback and Randy Rinehart, versatile defensive back; Mark Barnes, showed promise as a freshman and Trevor Newland will complete the quartet. Agler admits that this Otterbein squad has many plus points, but thinks it still needs some tinkering. Quarterback, a crucial position, is yet to be decided, but there are two experienced men for the position. Linebacker will be another question mark but again, Agler has a pool of talented players to fill the positions. “It’s just a matter of trying some proven players at a few different slots,” the Cardinal coach said. Otterbein faces four long absent opponents this year: Fleidelberg, Mus kingum, Allegheny, and Ohio Wesleyan. Capital, traditionally the Cardinal’s finale, will be third this year, a critical early test. Admittedly, winning seasons have been lean at Otterbein, but Moe Agler feels, “If we can get off to a fast start, against our first three opponents, all tough ones, we should be on our way — a winning way.”
Doug Thomson on the rampage.

athletic director and head football coach Robert “Moe” Agler, Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Otterbein, enters his 14th season as the Cardinal mentor. A 1948 grad of Otterbein, Agler spent two and a half years with the Navy before finishing his degree work here. He also has a Master’s degree from Ohio State University (1961). As a Cardinal gridder, Moe was one of the school’s top, all-time fullbacks. He was a member of the ’46 team which was heralded as one of the finest small college teams in the nation. Following graduation, Moe played for two years with the Los Angeles Rams of the NFL, and later, one year with the Calvary Stampeders in the Canadian League. After quitting pro ball because of an injury, he coached high school teams at nearby johnstown and Dublin before returning to Otterbein as an assistant football coach in 1953. In 1955, he was named head football coach and also head basketball coach. Three years later, Moe was appointed athletic director and, at that time, relinquished the basketball job. His grid teams recorded six consecutive winning seasons during the 1955-65 period. Retiring at the end of the 1965 season, Agler’s overall record was 57-36-4, establishing him as Otterbein’s winningest grid coach. Since returning to the head coach’s job in 1970 (although remaining as Athletic Director), Moe has revamped the football program. After two lean seasons, he hopes those rebuilding efforts will see victory this year.

assistant coaches ELMER“BUD”YOEST Veteran Otterbein coach (16 years atOtterbein) Bud Yoest will oversee the ends for Moe Agler. A former Otterbein end, Bud graduated from Otterbein in 1953. After three years of coaching at Mifflin High, he re turned to his alma mater as assistant football coach and track coach. In 1958 he was named head track coach. Bud was named Chairman of the Health and Physical Education Department this summer. DICK FISHBAUGH Dick Fishbaugh, the head baseball coach, will be working with the tackles this fall. He is in his seventh year at Otterbein and was graduated from Ohio University where he played varsity baseball. He also earned an M. A. degree at West Virginia University. PORTER MILLER A 1965 Otterbein graduate. Porter will coach the centers, guards and linebackers. He is in his fourth year as an Otterbein staff member. While attending Otterbein, Miller played football under Moe Agler. Porter taught and coached at Groveport High before joining the Cardinal staff. RON JONES Ron Jones is a familiar name to Otterbein football fans. From 1958-60 Jones set many Otterbein records as Larry Cline’s favorite pass receiver. A former head coach at Piketon, he is now vocational guidance counselor at Westerville High School. Ron will be working with the flankers and run ning backs. DICK REYNOLDS Dick was named head basketball coach for the Cardinals this summer, replacing Curt Tong, Otterbein’s top hardcourt coach for the past nine years. Since 1969, Dick had been assistant to Tong, while also serving as an aide In football and track. A 1965 grad of Otterbein, Reynolds earned four letters each in football, basketball and track. He will coach the defensive backs this fall.

otterbein president The 1972-73 grid season marks the second year that Dr. Thomas J. Kerr IV will occupy the President’s Box at Memorial Stadium. Dr. Kerr came to Otterbein as a professor of history in 1963 from the University of Buffalo, where he earned his M.A. in 1959, and Syra cuse University, where he was awarded his Ph.D. in 1965. Otterbein’s Board of Trustees named Dr. Kerr to succeed retiring President Dr. Lynn W. Turner, ef fective July 1, 1971. A longtime sports fan* Dr. Kerr discusses the Ohio Athletic Conference and its athletic attitudes both as an administrator-educator, and as a man familiar with the autumn football contests that open the Otterbein athletic calendar. “The Ohio Athletic Conference,’’ says Dr. Kerr, “places football in perspective. Competition within rules, cooperation in pursuit of defined goals, application of skills to problems and discipline and decision-making under pressure are characteristics of good football, strong liberal arts pro grams, and successful living.’’ “Our concern,’’ Dr. Kerr continues, “is with education as the develop ment of human potential. I am proud that both our athletic program and conference reflect that philosophy.’’ Dr. Kerr cites Coach Bob “Moe’’ Agler and the football coaching staff as hallmark examples of coaches and educators for college athletes. The familiar sight of President Kerr, his family and guests at their places on the fifty-yard line will mark another Otterbein football season.

otterbein college Otterbein is an independent in stitution of higher education with 1,400 students and a distinguished faculty of 100. The College, now in its 126th year, offers a program of liveral arts education in the Chris tian tradition. Otterbein, a United Methodist affiliated school, was the first col lege in the United States to begin as co-educational and was the first to employ women on its faculty. Re cently Otterbein came up with another first. A new campus governance plan was initiated which gives students an equal voting voice, along with the faculty and administration, on all campus policy and decision making bodies. In the newly created College Senate, the major policy making body, students sit in equal num bers with faculty, along with administrators of the College. The 3/3 Plan is a term of convenience given to Otterbein’s curriculum to indicate the fact that most full-time students at the College will enroll in three courses in each of three ten-week terms during the regular aca demic year. The structure is designed not only to permit concentration of effort on the part of the individual student, but also to stimulate innova tive teaching techniques on the part of his instructors. Awkward mid-term breaks are eliminated. The inter-terms, especially the full month break in December, may be utilized for extended personal travel, ensemble or team tours, holiday employment, or reading and research. The latest addition to the College is a 186,000 volume, $2.2 million library building in the center of campus. The new library, which houses one of the most modern audio-visual departments in any college, was opened in Spring of 1972.

cross country preview “This year’s squad should be our best ever,” declared Cardinal cross country coach, Dave Lehman. “Last year was our best year to date (10-7) and we’ve got everyone back, including school record holders. Bob Long, and Charley Ernst, both seniors.” Lehman, a 1970 Otterbein grad in his third year as cross country coach, welcomes back eight lettermen from last year’s team. Leading the lettermen will be Long and Ernst. Both set school records last year. Long clocking 4;20 in the mile and Ernst posting a 14.47, 3-mile mark.
