MESSAGE FROM C. BRENT DEVORE OTTERBEIN COLLEGE PRESIDENT I have had the privilege of serving four collegiate institutions with NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA programs. My experience has convinced me that NCAA Division III has the proper perspective, providing the best balance of academics and athletic activities. Otterbein has a proud tradition of intercollegiate athletic com petition dating from the turn of the century. Throughout that period, our commitment has been to the whole person, both in and out of the classroom. Our coaches are teachers first, mentors mak ing deep and lasting impressions on their students. While the drive to win is important, our real commitment lies in developing leadership traits and the competitive spirit which will aid our scholar athletes during life after Otterbein. tradition and we welcome your support and continuing involvement. Ours is a proud

E. W. “BUD” YOEST OTTERBEIN ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Under the direction of athletic director, E. W. “Bud” Yoest, Otterbein’s men’s athletic programs have grown in size and scope and gained national recognition. In fact, since Yoest took charge in 1974, five of the nine men’s athletic programs have turned in cumulative winning percentages of more than .500 and 27 student athletes in five intercollegiate sports have been named All-America. The Otterbein baseball and basketball teams have reached the national finals and semi-finals respectively. A 1953 graduate of Otterbein, Yoest started his career at Mif flin High School in Columbus serving as a physical education in structor and football coach. Returning to Westerville in 1956, he joined the Cardinal staff as head track coach and an assistant football coach. Yoest’s Otterbein track teams compiled a 133-73 record over 18 years. During this time, he coached 156 All-OAC athletes and nine NCAA All-Americas. A professor in men’s health and physical education, Yoest serves as the depart ment’s chairperson, continuing to teach as well as supervise the academic and athletic programs.

BOB SHAW OTTERBEIN HEAD FOOTBALL COACH

Bob Shaw, defensive coordinator for the Otterbein football team since 1981, enters his first year as head coach of the Cardinals. The 1943 All-America tight end replaces Rich Seils, who resigned last summer to assume the duties of athletic director for the Worthington (Ohio) school system. Seils compiled a 49-40-2 record in ten seasons at Otterbein. Shaw brings over 35 years of professional play ing and coaching experience to his new position. “I’m excited about it, I really am,” Shaw said. “I’ll approach this assignment as I’ve always ap proached a new coaching assignment —in a positive way.” The 62-year-old Shaw, a native of Richwood, Ohio, began his football career at The Ohio State University in 1941. He played three years at tight end, earning All-Conference honors in 1942 and 1943. He was named Associated Press AllAmerica in 1943. After a two-year stint in the service, Shaw played for the NFL champions Cleveland Rams in 1945 and was their starting tight end in 1946. He sat out the seasons of 1947 and 1948 after suffer ing a cervical fracture. He played for the NFL Western Division cham pions Los Angeles Rams in 1949. With the Chicago Cardinals in 1950 he set an NFL record

for most touchdown receptions in one game, by catching five scoring passes. The record, which he shares with Kellen Winslow, still holds today. Shaw left the NFL in 1951 and played three years with the Calgary Stampeders (1951-52) and the Toronto Argonauts (1953) in the Canadian Football League (CFL). At Calgary, Shaw set a CFL scoring record of 110 points in 1951. While playing in the CFL, Shaw spent one semester a year at Otterbein and earned a bachelor of science degree in education in 1953. Shaw spent the next three years as head foot ball coach at high schools in Washington Court House and Cuyahoga Falls before entering the professional coaching ranks in 1957 when he was an assistant coach under Hall of Fame coach Weeb Eubank at Baltimore. After two years as receiver coach at Baltimore, Shaw went to San Francisco in 1959. He left the NFL In 1960 and became director of athletics at the New Mexico Military Institute, a two-year junior college located in Roswell. Shaw also served as the college’s head football and bas ketball coach and was the one who introduced the pro offense to Roger Staubach, quarterback of Shaw’s 9-1 team in 1960. Shaw compiled a 22-6-1 record in football in three years at the institute. In 1963, Shaw returned to professional football, this time seeking head coaching experience in the CFL. He spent four years at Saskatchewan (1963-64) and Toronto (1965-66) before returning to the NFL in 1967. He spent the next nine years as pass offensive coach for New Orleans (1967-68), Chicago (1969-71) and Buffalo (1972-75). In his 12 years as an assistant coach in the NFL, Shaw worked with such standout receivers as Dan Abramowicz, Ahmad Rashad, Raymond Berry, Harlon Hill, Billy Wilson and Dick Gordon; and quarterbacks Johnny Unitas and Y. A. Tittle. Unable to nail down an NFL head coaching as signment, Shaw went back to the CFL as head coach and general manager of the Hamilton TigerCats from 1976-77. He was named CFL Coach of the Year in 1976 when the Tiger-Cats made it into the Eastern Conference finals. Shaw relinquished his head coaching duties in 1978 and continued to serve as general manager. In six seasons as head coach in the CFL, he compiled a 39-54-2 record. Shaw joined the Otterbein Health and Physical Education Department in 1981. He and his wife, Mary, live in Westerville and have two children, Webb, 34, and Amy, 26.

ASSISTANT COACHES Phil Mauro...Defensive backs...Returns to Otterbein College after a five-year stint in Texas as chairman of the physical education departments of the Texas School for the Deaf, and the Lockhart and Calallen Independent School Districts where he also had track and football coaching responsi bilities. In addition to assistant football coach, Phil will serve as head track coach at Otterbein. Previously, he served as assistant football coach at both Otterbein (1981-1982) and Ohio Wesleyan (1980-1981). He earned his bachelor of arts degree in health and physical education from Denison in 1977, and his master’s degree in athletic adminis tration from Bowling Green State University in 1980. He is married.

Jack Pietila...Linebackers...A retired major with the United States Air Force, Pietila is director of alumni relations as well as director of annual giv ing at Otterbein. He is a 1962 graduate of Otter bein and was a four-year starter at offensive guard and linebacker for the 1958-1961 teams. He was selected All-OAC honorable mention at both posi tions in 1960, and first team All-OAC at guard in 1961. He holds a master’s degree in industrial management from the University of North Dakota. Jack and his wife, Mary Jean, have two daughters and live in Westerville. Dick Reynolds...Offensive backs...Needs little introduction. Reynolds will start his 14th season as head basketball coach at Otterbein College, sporting a 213-122 record. A 1965 graduate of Ot terbein College, Dick was a 12-time letter winner in football, basketball and track. Was selected second team All-OAC at defensive back in 1962 and All-OAC honorable mention at quarterback in 1964. Dick and his wife, Ellen, have two children and live in Westerville.

Mike Havens...Defensive line...Joined the Cardi nal staff in 1983. Havens was a starting offensive tackle for the 1979 Otterbein squad that finished the year with a 7-2 record. He earned a degree from Otterbein in 1980, after spending his first two years at Akron University. Mike, who is currently pursuing a master’s degree from Ashland College in sports administration, gained previous coach ing experience at North Olmstead High School in the Cleveland area.

Dan Thompson...Wide receivers...As well as holding the post of Registrar at Otterbein since 1979, Dan manages to squeeze in time for football. This is his fourth season as assistant coach. A 1978 Otterbein graduate, with a degree in busi ness administration, Dan saw limited action at defensive end. He and his wife, Valerie, live in Westerville.

Dave Hahn...Offensive line...A 1983 Otterbein graduate, Dave was a three-year starter at offen sive guard and served as captain of the (5-4) 1982 squad. He holds a master’s degree in physical education from Bowling Green State University and is doing post-graduate work at Ohio State University. This Is his second season as assistant coach.

OTTERBEIN OUTLOOK— 1985 CARDINALS INSTALL NEW LOOK The Otterbein College football team fields a new look this season, as first-year head coach Bob Shaw dismantles the wishbone and installs the T. “I think it will be a lot more fun for the players and certainly more entertaining for the fans and student body,” Shaw explained about the offen sive switch. “I think the guys are looking forward to a change. “And, I know it (pro-T offense),” said Shaw, a veteran pro tight end with 12 years of assistant coaching experience in the NFL, plus another six as head coach in the Canadian Football League. Shaw realizes the offensive transformation won’t necessarily lead to a winning season. ‘‘If we’re going to improve upon last year’s 3-7 record, some of our upperclassmen will really have to come through and have developed over the summer,” Shaw said. ‘‘Hopefully, we can win some close ones and eek out a couple more.” Despite the record, the 1984 Cardinals were very close to a .500 team, losing critical games to Mount Union and Capital in the final quarter of play. The Cardinals return only five starters from last year’s offensive unit, which finished sixth in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), averaging 249.3 yards per game in total offense. Junior quarterback Chris White will battle senior Jeff Wiles for the starting nod. Largely due to injuries, neither quarterback could establish himself as the regular starter last season. The pair averaged a combined 104.2 yards per game in total offense In 1984. Otterbein’s greatest asset on offense is the ex perience and depth of its running backs. Veteran halfbacks Randy Lepley, a senior, and Dave Main-

ella, a junior, team up with senior fullback David Skrobot to form the core of the Cardinal rushing game. Those three accounted for over half of Ot terbein’s 1,600 rushing yards last season. A mixture of old and new make up the 1985 re ceiving corps. Last season’s starting tight end, John Kusan, has moved to defense leaving the tight end position up for grabs between Dave Kiger, a sophomore, and senior letterman Tim Bates. Junior Jim Boltz is penciled in as the start ing split end, while senior Paul Collier gets the pre-season nod at flanker. Both are lettermen and saw considerable action last season. The Cardinal starting offensive line remains as one of Coach Shaw’s biggest concerns heading Into the new season. The entire left side of last year’s starting line is gone including center Chris Cebull, two-time All-OAC first team guard Matt Clegg, and tackle Dick Moore. The right side is back intact, and includes 1984 All-OAC honorable mention Scott Pryfogle, a 6-3, 240-pound senior guard, and John Piper, a 6-0, 239-pound senior tackle. Defensively, the Cardinals return nine starters from last year’s unit, which was ranked last in the OAC, giving up 380.1 yards per game. Shaw re mains optimistic, however, noting that his staff worked hard during the off-season seeking re cruits capable of filling key positions, one of which Is the spot vacated by two-time All-OAC first team end Gary Ubry. The defense will revolve around the play of re turning starter and senior linebacker Todd Weihl, who should get plenty of help from returning senior linebackers Tim Harris and Craig Brenneman, and returning sophomore linebacker Dan Harris.

The Cardinals’ greatest strength on defense, perhaps, is its experienced backfield corps led by speedster Steve McConaghy, who missed most of last season due to an injury. McConaghy, an AllOAC track selection, will play the free safety posi tion. Mark Collier, a sophomore returning starter, will play the strong safety position. Returning junior starters Victor Canini and Barry Goldslager will anchor the corners. Although the Otterbein linebacking and backfield corps seem solid, the Cardinals are short of experienced down linemen. Senior nose guard Tom Chance is the only returning down lineman from last season’s defensive unit. Sophomore Barry Sutherland and junior Tim Colder, both lettermen, are the pre-season selections for the end positions. Senior place-kicker, Dave Chilcote, and punter, John Watts, are both returning starters.

Missed his entire freshman season because of a bro ken collarbone. Great instincts, moves. Will be counted on heavily in ’85. Excellent student. Possibly one of the hardest runners of all the running backs. Rushed for 5.5 yards per carry last season, which was the best average on the squad. Head coach Jim Moretti inherits plenty of experience as he heads into his first season as head coach of the Sax ons. Alfred returns 16 starters —eight each on offense and defense —from last year’s 6-4 team. Leading the charge is sophomore quarterback James Carman, who threw for 1,519 yards and 15 touchdowns last season as a freshman. Three of his favorite receivers — junior halfback Gary Sheely, senior tight end Michael McGowan and senior wide receiver John Yorio —return. Those three accounted for 13 touchdown receptions in 1984. Senior fullback Rick Musacchio leads the ground at tack. Alfred has experienced only three losing seasons in the last 20 years.

Ohio Wesleyan returns five starters on offense, includ ing senior tight end Bob Hill, who hauled in 37 receptions for 574 yards and four touchdowns in 1984. He was selected third team Pizza Hut All America. Eight starters return on defense, including seniors strong safety Dean Hood and in side linebacker Dean Cordle, both Pizza Hut All America honorable mentions last season.

Marietta’s lone victory last season snapped a 41-game winless streak. Third-year head coach Mike Hollway will try to keep that winning attitude alive in 1985 as the Pioneers return seven starters each on offense and defense. Evan Lipp, selected All-CAC honorable mention last year as a freshman, will pace the offense from his fullback position. Lipp was the third leading rusher in the league last year, averaging 76.6 yards per game. Senior linebacker Phil Schmucker, second team All-CAC last season, will anchor the defense.
