Dwight "Smokey" Ballenger'39 April 27,1916 - January 20,1990 Dwight C. "Smokey" Ballenger was a four-sport athlete and captain of the all-conference basketball team his senior year (1938-1939) at Otterbein College. His dedication to Otterbein athletics continued after graduation. In 1955, he was one of the founders of the Otterbein "O" Club, the athletic boosters associa tion affiliated with Otterbein College. During his decades of service, Smokey was the consummate spokes man and fund-raiser for Otterbein athletics, and was instrumental in establishing the "O" Club Foundation, an endowed fund with income supporting Otterbein's athletic programs. Smokey, the longest-serving president of the "O" Club, oversaw the organization as it progressed from a small boosters club to a nonprofit organization with over 2,000 members and assets of close to $1 million. Last year, in recognition of the 20"^ anniversary of the "O" Club Classic, the basketball tournament Smokey helped to establish and run throughout his remaining life, the "O" Club Board of Directors voted unanimously to rename this tournament in his honor. The "O" Club is pleased to have this opportunity to honor Smokey's memory and to recognize his widow and college sweetheart, Betty Rosensteel Ballenger, Otterbein Class of 1942, and their children, David, Barbara (Holder) and Lee (Wieland), for their support of Smokey's efforts.

Otterbein "O" Club Serving Otterbein Athletics since 1955 "O" Club Board
A Special Welcome to the "O" Club Classic The Otterbein athletics department is proud to join with the "O" Club in presenting the 21"'Annual Smokey Ballenger "O" Club Classic Basketball Tournament. We warmly wel come the team members and fans from Benedictine Univer sity (IL), University of Dubuque (lA), Grove City College (PA), Ohio Wesleyan University (OH), and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (Wl). And we hope you will carry home fond memories of this tournament. We also welcome team members from Westerville Parks and Recreation Department's Bantam Basketball League and St. Paul's Church Youth League, who will be playing sevenminute games at each half time. The youth league games were a real crowd pleaser last year and we are happy to showcase the talents of these boys and girls again. This year we are benefiting Paul's Pantry, a Westerville food pantry serving needy families in the Westerville City School District for over 30 years. The athletic department and "O" Club are proud to join with the many community churches and other organizations and individuals who support this Westerville charity. We thank you for your continued support of the "O" Club and Otterbein College athletics.

Season Preview Otterbein returns seven letterwinners, including four starters, from last season's 14-11 team, which shared third place with Mount Union, each 8-8 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Tenth-year head coach Connie Richardson feels she has the right mix of experienced upperclassmen and freshmen to make for an excit ing and productive season. Three-year starter Kara Grishkat, a guard, heads the list of returning starters. A first team Academic AllOAC pick, Grishkat handed out 5.9 assists a game (second best in the OAC) while averaging 10 points and 4.2 rebounds last season. She placed seventh in the OAC for steals, two a game, and was a second team AllOAC selection. Other starters back include junior Jill Repass, a two-year starter at guard, and sophomores Brianne
3
Gray, a guard, and Jennifer Harrison, a center. Repass and Gray combined for 161 assists and 70 steals last season. Gray finished second in the confer ence in three-pointers a game, averaging 1.75. She made 42. Harrison averaged 10 points and 5.8 rebounds, and placed fifth in the OAC with an 80.7 free-throw per centage (67 of 83). Grishkat, Gray and Harrison played high school basketball at Pickerington. Seniors Gretchen Linscott (6.5 ppg., 4.2 rpg.), a center, and Mandy Simmerman (6.2 ppg., 3.4 rpg.), a forward, and sophomore Kelli Molk (1.8 ppg., 1.7 rpg.), a forward, round out the group of returning lettermen. Season Preview The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball Team enters the 2000-2001 season with an optimistic outlook. Coming off the best season in over a decade the Spartans have plenty of reasons to feel they can continue to improve and move up in the tough Iowa Conference standings. The Spartans will have one of the best if not the best front courts in the conference this year. Returning post players Greta PemsI 6'1 junior native of Dubuque, and Jodi Ottersburg, 6'2 sophomore from Gillespie, Illinois accounted for 56 percent of the offense and 45 percent of the re bounding on last years team. Last season as a freshman Ottersburg lead the team and the Iowa Conference in scoring at 19 points and 10 rebounds a game. PemsI was second on the team and fourth in the conference in scoring at over 16 points a contest. Add to that the Spartans are looking forward to the return of LeKeya Hoosman who sat out second semes ter last year but looks to return to the impact player she was as a freshman in 98-99. That season Hoosman, a 6'1 junior from Waterloo, Iowa, averaged nine points, seven rebounds
and averaged two blocks per game. In the backcourt the Spartans also look forward to the return of Rachel Raub, a 5' 6 junior from Dysert, Iowa, and Molly Heins, a 5' 10 senior from Seneca, Illinois, who are both coming off season ending ACL injuries. Jen Layman, a 5'7 junior from Onawa, Iowa, also returns from an ACL injury that allowed her to play in only two games last season. Jen might be our smartest player and can be one of our better defenders, she is still recovering from her injury this pre season. Coach Giese is cautiously optimistic about 3 incoming fresh men, Dana Kester, a 5'4 native of Jesup, Iowa, comes In with very impressive high school stats and looks to have locked up the starting point guard position during the pre season. Also expected to make immediate contributions are Kelly Thompson from Hayfield, MN and Andrea Bermas of Reseda, Califor nia. Thompson, 5'9, can play any position on the perimeter and Bermas will look to compete for time at the 1 and 2 guard positions.

Season Preview Ohio Wesleyan University and head coach Nan Carney-DeBord will strive to become only the third school to win three straight North Coast Athletic Conference women's basketball championships. The Battling Bishops would appear to be in good position to achieve that goal/ returning four starters and 10 letterwomen from last year's team, which finished 23-3 overall and 142 in the NCAC. Senior Jessica Viertiboeck, a firstteam All-NCAC pick last year, returns at the wing position. She ranked fourth in NCAC in scoring, led the league in free throw percent age and 3-point field goal percent age and ranked fourth in field goal percentage in 1999-2000. Senior Leslie Welsh returns at the guard position, and senior Jaime Dann, junior Michelle Wolfe and
5
freshman Becky Van Fossen will give the Bishops a variety of looks at the guard spot. The post positions also are wellstocked. Season Preview A mix of eight veterans and seven newcomers return for Grove City, who compiled a 16-13 record last year and advanced to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Southern championship game. Eighth-year head coach Melissa Lamie knows the team's strength lies in the backcourt with the return of a pair of second-year starters, junior Stephanie Murphy is an excellent ball-handling guard who can hit the three-pointer, while fellow classmate T.L. Thompson possesses solid hands and great court smarts. Both Murphy and Thompson will share the point. Lamie will utilize a fourguard offense with senior Kristina
Dixon and sophomore Cara Denniston back to boost the offense and lend a hand under the glass where junior forward Livia Wright returns. The Lady Wolverines are deep on the bench this season with returning juniors Christy Faller and Adrienne Orris. Among the new players, sophomore forward Jessica Jenkins will make an impact at both ends. Kristin Paslowski and Sarah Bailey are two sophomores who should see time in the backcourt. Rounding out the GCC roster are freshmen forwards Erika Cunningham, Leigh LeGare and Misty Wadowski and guard Mee Ok Won.

Season Preview Otterbein, under 29th-year head coach Dick Reynolds, returns five lettermen, including four starters, from last season's 18-9 squad, which shared the regular-season Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) title with Ohio Northern. Reynolds, who became the first coach in the OAC to take teams to conference titles in four different decades, closes in on another milestone this season—win number 500. Only 14 coaches have reached that mark in NCAA Division III. Reynolds comes Into the season with a career record of 488-274. Three seniors and last season's Mike Gregory Award winner make up the group of four returning starters. junior forward/center Jeff Gibbs, voted the league's most outstanding player last season, heads the list of returning starters. Gibbs, selected to three All-America teams, led NCAA Division III in rebounding, averaging 13.3 a game. He ranked seventh nationally in blocked shots (2.7 a game) and eleventh in field-goal percentage (61.4). Gibbs averaged 16.8 points an outing. 7

Seniors back In the starting lineup include point guard Chad Dresbach (5.2 ppg., 2.5 rpg.) and forward Scott Elliott (9.9 ppg., 2.7 rpg.), both three-year starters, and guard Pat Noles (15.5 ppg., 2.0 rpg.), who came to Otterbein from Wooster last season. Dresbach, the second-leading playmaker in the OAC a year ago, tallied 141 assists and 31 steals. Noles led the OAC In made threes, with 90, placing him 16th In NCAA III. Elliott knocked In 32 threepointers. Both Elliott, named first team Academic All-OAC, and Noles earned honorable mention All-OAC honors in 1999-00. junior Kevin Shay, a guard, rounds out the list of returning lettermen. Coming off the bench, Shay averaged 10.5 points a game last season. He tallied 75 assists and 30 steals. Although the Cardinals bring a solid core of returning lettermen into the new season, one of Reynolds' major concerns is developing strength off the bench. About five or six freshmen could see playing time at the varsity level.

Season Preview Depending on how you look at it, Ohio Wesleyan head coach Mike DeWitt has either one or four return ing starters. But no matter which way you choose, there's no question that this season's Battling Bishop team will be one of the youngest in a generation. Four lettermen are back from last year, all of whom started games at one point or another during the season. But the four players combined for only 25 starts — equaling one full-time starter. Freshman Shawn Kindred should win the starting point guard position. Freshmen Lamont Allen and josh Peterson also will look to contribute. Senior co-captains jimmy Francis and Sam Root will be at the forefront of the battle for the two and three positions In DeWitt's three-guard offense. A capable floor general, Francis started eight games last year at point guard and will serve as a
team leader and mentor to Kindred. Root is a fearless penetrator who emerged as a scorer while starting 10 games last season. Also vying for starting guard spots are sophomore Kyle Comstock and junior jason Dopoulos. Sophomore jordan Blackburn is the only returnee in the Bishop front court. Blackburn, who made four starts last season, will be in the thick of the battle for a starting forward position. Freshmen Bryan Beigie and john McLarnan also will look for playing time at forward. Freshman Travis Schwab and classmate Charlie Smith, an all-state pick in high school, will play center this season. Sophomore Andrew Cone will contribute at both forward and center spots after playing for the Bishop junior varsity team last season.

Season Preview At a glance, you will notice that the Eagles have an abundance of seniors on their roster. Typically, seniors represent experience, which translates into victories. Will that happen for the Eagles during the 2000 - 2001 season? Stay tuned to see the results. October through February of last year was a tale of two seasons for the Eagles. The first 13 games of the season produced a 6-7 record. Not receiving a NCAA Tournament Bid was becoming a foregone conclusion. But something happened, two wins against Lake Forest, the Midwest League regular season champions and then a huge victory against Aurora turned things around. The Eagles won 11 of their last 12 games. Benedictine won the North ern lllinois-lowa Conference (NIIC) for the second consecutive season and received a NCAA Division III Tourna ment berth for the second time in four years, and for only the fourth time in school history. The experience of last season will hopefully propel this year's team to another successful year. Leading the way will be senior captain Terry Frigo (St. Patrick). Last season Terry was selected Co-MVP of the NIIC and voted
9
to the National Association of Basket ball Coaches (NABC) First Team All Midwest District. Fie averaged 19 points per game and nine rebounds per game. Frigo led the team in scoring in 1 7 games and will be looked upon to lead this senior orientated group. Two other senior captains, Nate Bronski (Notre Dame) and Andy Cosme (Marist) have ma tured on and off the court and have taken active leadership roles to continue the Benedictine University Basketball Tradition. Nate returns as starter and Andy was a key player off the bench last season. The two players who could be running the show at the point are seniors Brian Banks (Lincoln Park) and Rick Piek (Notre Dame). Brian started last season at the point and Rick played key minutes off the bench. Both will again compete for the starting role this season. While the Eagles will look to improve with ten returning letterman and four returning starters, the sched ule again proves to be a great test. Nine of the first twelve games the team plays had a winning record last season.

Season Preview The University of WisconsinWhitewater men's basketball team enters the 2000-2001 season with three reasons for optimism: experi ence, returning talent, and tradition. The Warhawks started four fresh men and a junior most of last season. Forward Aubrey Lewis-Byers, now a sophomore, the Warhawks's scoring (18.9) and rebounding (6.4) leader, was the only freshman to earn First Team All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors. Guard Ernest Williams, another freshman who learned on the job last year, averaged 16.4 points in his first collegiate season. Sophomores Luke Kuehne, Andy Kieck, Todd Gourlie and Rob Bossingham also earned minutes last year. Returning talent for UW-W doesn't necessarily mean what is back from last year, although center Kevin Hughes (9.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, 55% FG) and fellow captains Scott Voight and Matt Matteson are seniors in their fourth year in the program. It is the talent that is returning from previous seasons that will provide an extra ingredient for this year's team. Guard
Jake Wolter, an all-American defensive back and punt returner for the Warhawk football team, averaged 7.6 points per game in 1998-99, but had to sit out last season with an ankle Injury suffered In football. Guards Andre Hicks (4.3 points) and Kevin Martin ((5.8 points) were In the backcourt mix with Wolter in 1998-99, but also sat out last year. The biggest returnee, literally, is senior center Robert Smith. Smith averaged six points per game in 199798 as a freshman for UW-W, then was a member of the University of Wisconsin (Madison) team that advanced to the Division I Final Four, before transferring back to UW-W for his final season. Smith isn't the only transfer that will have an impact. Point guard Pat Duffy, who played at Marquette two years ago, and off-guard Craig Harden, from Bethany Lutheran, should add to UWW's deep and versatile guard corps. The Warhawks have compiled winning records In twenty of the last twenty-one seasons, with only last year's 11-14 mark breaking the string. Added experience and key returning players signal a return to the tradition of Warhawk basketball.
