The Hotel Valley Ho Resort is ALL yours.
We are happy to be back in sunny Scottsdale at the beautiful, historic Hotel Valley Ho (1956). Enjoy the entire hotel for the weekend from the Sands to the Rooftop to the two pools; take a little “Dip n’ Drink” in the OH Pool, order a Spa Treatment, or just hop in the hot tub – Hotel Valley Ho is YOUR resort for the weekend. Returning to Hotel Valley Ho for our fourth year definitely feels like a family reunion. Our Tiki Oasis events are all about community and we have created many opportunities for you to connect with others. We have designed gatherings for members of our community to come together such as: the Aloha Caftan Society Stroll and the Cabana Suit Strut, Melanated Tiki; LGBTiki meetup; Ukulele Strum & Sing; and Pooch Parade (for our four-legged friends). You are welcome to join any of these inclusive activities for free.
Preserving Mid-Century architecture is our passion.
Arizona Tiki Oasis benefits Arizona Preservation Foundation who promote and protect Arizona’s historic architecture, including preserving Modern architecture. Scottsdale is a hotbed of Mid-Century Modern design. We’ve included more seminars on topics from MCM fashion, decor, and architecture. We have also expanded our Marketplace to include more Mid-Century design, and of course, we still have loads of Tiki art and treasures.
Imbibe, dine, swim, frolic, relax, enjoy yourself. Thank you for joining us at Arizona Tiki Oasis, Baby Doe & Otto von Stroheim

Th e M a ki ng of Ta l l Ti ki Ta l es Did you know that America had its own South Seas isle just off its coast? For a while, Catalina Island flew the banner of a Polynesian paradise drawing tourists and celebrities to its shores. A proper Tiki haven is like a Hollywood film set, inviting customers to cast themselves as beachcombers and South Seas maidens, and Catalina fit the bill. Sven Kirsten will go behind the scenes of his current Catalina Museum exhibition and delve into the role that novels, movies, and restaurant entrepreneurs played in telling the ‘Tall Tales of Tik’i.
Sven Kirsten – It was his love for visuals that inspired Sven to collect and photograph the remnants of the forgotten culture of Polynesian Pop in America, leading him to identify the Tiki as its icon. As a hunter and gatherer of lost artifacts and ephemera of this phenomenon, he began to see the pattern of a unique art form, publishing his findings in The Book of Tiki in September 2000. For the first time, the book presented all the aspects of Tiki-style; its design, graphics, architecture, social culture, and cocktail mixology. In 2007, Sven published his second book, Tiki Modern, then Tiki Pop in 2014, and The Art of Tiki in 2017. He continues to seek out, promote, and preserve all things Polynesian Pop! svenkirsten.com

As they developed early in the 20th century, department stores became core institutions that reassured Americans that life was good. Regional department stores dotted the nation and reached their zenith by the 1960s. These regional department stores featured local design, flair, and inventory. This meant that locals and tourists alike could find fashion that related to the area and find unique items not found anywhere else. Arizona had one of the most unique and thriving set of regional department stores. Learn what made the likes of Peterson’s, Goldwater’s, and Porter’s unique and how they captured the imagination (and wallets) of consumers from coast to coast!

Why, a quick dip into mid-century “purse anthropology” with Collinsiana guru, Karen Adler, that’s what! In addition to insights from her decade-long Finding Enid with LOVE study of Enid Collins artworks, Karen will share some of the rarest, glitziest, kitschiest physical specimens from her collection of more than 600 originals. Five different financial institutions in Phoenix, with local and national architects, collectively created some of the most unusually designed midcentury branch banks. Starting off somewhat simple, the styles evolved through the late 1970s. Today, preservation is a major concern of those who love mid-century architecture as banks downsize because more customers are migrating to online banking. Learn how this building program happened, what buildings still exist as banks or have been repurposed, and what we have lost, and in some cases, what unfortunately has replaced them.
