Advising in the COVID Era: Listening and Empowering
By CIS Advising Staff
College is a time of personal and educational exploration, and we as advisors feel our primary function is to do what we can to support our students during their time at OU.
This includes being a voice for students at all levels and creating an empowering and supportive environment. Graduation is the number one goal, but along the way students need to feel included in the community and prepared for their future careers. The IAS advising team values our relationship with our students from freshman to graduate, and we hope our students feel the same. While the pandemic changed how we do things for our students, the process and end results are still as meaningful! A
s we navigate the COVID era and look to the future, communication with our students will be more important than ever. Listening to student needs is a priority for our office. We want to hear from students regarding courses they would like to see offered, skills they would like to gain for the job market, and what they want to accomplish in their time at OU. It is a good time for us to review our programs to evaluate degree practicality and student needs. The IAS academic programs are exciting to work with, as we are able to individually review each student’s record. Our favorite part of the job is to learn what our students need and help them reach individual goals. We encourage our students to let us know what they’d like to see, and we look forward to continue working with all academic levels to build the best plan for them.
