OU DENTISTRY | SPRING/SUMMER 2015
From the DEAN The changing-of-the-guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace in London is a time-honored tradition, originating back to the 1600s and, since the middle of the 19th century, continues as you see it today. My wife and I had an opportunity to see the ceremony last fall, and we were amazed at how the tradition connects the past with the future, all in one ceremony. The ceremony transmits three distinct aspects of importance in British society; it substantiates consistent and rigid procedure; it bridges the past with the present; and it provides a presentation of solidity and sturdiness to foreigners about the culture. It all begins with the “old guards” assembling within the fence compound of the palace into an organized pattern, with the “old band” assembling and then beginning to play traditional songs from the past. As the “new guard” comes up from the street in front of the palace, they, too, are marching and riding their horses in an organized fashion. They assemble in the center of the palace compounds, with the old-guard band continuing to play during this assembly process. As the new band marches into the compound, it joins the old band in the same song, demonstrating the importance of respect of the present with the past. As they complete these distinct songs, the old guard marches out of the compound while the new guard, now on duty, maintains the stay of the palace. What I found unique is that as the new guard band finished the traditional songs, they started a new presentation with the band playing “Thriller.” Yes, you read correctly, Michael Jackson’s song, “Thriller.” Like the British changing of the guard, each of our deans since the college’s inception in 1969 have demonstrated those key items mentioned above of consistency and rigidity, connecting the past with the future, and a presentation of solidity and sturdiness to those inside and out of the college. Dean William Brown, our founding dean, initiated this in 1969 and carried through to 1987; Dean Russell Stratton from 1987 through 1999, and then Dean Stephen Young, from 1999 to 2014. The next era of leadership at the College of Dentistry begins now – in 2015. As I take the reins of the College of Dentistry as the fourth named dean, I reflect on the London ceremony, and I am reminded of those important values that are now in my custody. First, I must maintain consistency of providing a top clinical educational professional program, for which the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry is well-known. Second, I must continue to bridge the past with the present. As many of our longtime faculty begin to retire, we must lay a strong foundation for our new faculty, keeping those methods and teachings that have proven their worth over time and adopting new ones as our field advances. Lastly, we must continue to demonstrate our steadfastness to our foundations of our profession to those of the community we serve. I am honored and blessed to have this opportunity to serve one of the most distinctive academic institutions in the nation. I look forward to providing new leadership, of helping usher in our own “changing of the guards.” I vow to keep those three important goals – consistency and rigidity, connecting the past with the present, and the solidity and sturdiness for our profession – at the forefront of our vision as the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry moves bravely forward into the 21st century.

ALUMNI PRESIDENT’S Message I love this time of year; we get to shake off the long, cold winter and plan for family vacations – and we welcome a new group of dental professionals to our ranks. Congratulations to the Class of 2015. You have great careers ahead of you, and your university can’t wait to experience your success with you. The incoming dental class of 2018 promises to be a good one; they come from nine states, have an average age of 24 and come from very diverse backgrounds. They will be entering a College of Dentistry that many of you would not recognize. Change is everywhere. Depending on which floor you step onto, you may be in 2015 or have a flashback to your school days. The dean compared it to remodeling a house; when you finish one floor, it makes the others look even older than you remember. The new continuing education room has the most up-to-date technology and will be hosting several educational courses over the next few months. The new dental hygiene rooms are beautiful and connect students from around the state in one learning environment. The fifth floor also has begun its transformation with the Dean’s office and room 540, and the Yellow/Orange clinic and preclinic simulation lab are soon to follow, once funding is secured. I can’t wait to see the final products. Please take time to update your contact information so we can keep you informed of the upcoming CE dates, renovation progress and other COD news. There is a form in the back of this issue to do just that. Social media is a great way to stay in touch too. You can check out the website at dentistry. ouhsc.edu, follow @OUDentistry on Twitter and like OU College of Dentistry on Facebook. The Alumni Association already has had a busy and productive year. We held our annual Young Alumni Reception for the senior dental and dental hygiene students at the brand new Fassler Hall, and the always-fun Alumni Reception at the ODA Annual Session in Tulsa. We aren’t done yet, so be sure to put Alumni Weekend on your calendar. It is scheduled for Sept. 18 and 19. There will be a continuing education course, the Dean’s Circle Dinner at Vast and the annual tailgate party before the OU/Tulsa game in Norman. We will be honoring the classes of 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005 and 2010. If you are part of these classes and want help organizing a class reunion, please contact Sammie in the dean’s office for guidance.

OkMOM: Oklahoma Mission of Mercy in Tulsa On Feb. 6 and 7, more than 100 OU College of Dentistry students, staff and faculty donated their time and expertise at the Sixth Annual Oklahoma Mission of Mercy event in Tulsa. This incredible event is designed to meet the critical need of dental patients of all ages by providing dental care to as many adults and children as time, volunteers and supplies will allow.
FROM OU COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY VOLUNTEERS: “OKMOM is an amazing event that brings together the entire dental community for a common cause — to provide care to the underserved population. It is so humbling to be part of something that does so much good for those who are in desperate need of a little extra help.” “I always enjoy volunteering at OKMOM because I know that my service makes a difference in someone’s life, whether big or small.” “Every year I see hundreds of people willing to wait all day— and even all night— to receive dental treatment. The least we can do as dental professionals is give one weekend of our time to help make a small difference in the large need of the communities in which we live.” “This was my first year to experience OKMOM, and it made me extremely proud to be entering a profession that cares so much about helping the community.”
“People usually camp outside of stores for Black Friday, but today people are camping outside to receive treatment from dedicated dental professionals. You can see how much this truly means to the individuals in the community.”

Staci Wekenborg Staci Moss-Wekenborg returns to the OUCOD as a clinical instructor after 23 years of private practice as a dental hygienist. She graduated from the OU College of Dentistry in 1992 with a bachelor of science degree in dental hygiene. She is a member of the American Dental Hygiene Association, Oklahoma Dental Hygiene Association, Oklahoma County Dental Hygiene Society and the American Dental Education Association. She loves serving her profession through dental missions, including work with One Child Matters in the Dominican Republic, OkMOM and LOVE-OKC. She is married to Todd, a vice president with Sonic Industries Inc. They have two children: Paige, a junior in high school, and Jace, who is in the eighth grade. She enjoys traveling, dinner out with friends and attending the many activities in which her children participate. She went skydiving off of the coast of Hawaii and her parachute failed, so she dropped 6,000 feet before her reserve chute opened! She no longer sky dives.
Melissa Stutzman Melissa Stutzman joins the OUCOD in the Department of Dental Hygiene. She earned her bachelor of science degree in dental hygiene at Baylor College of Dentistry. She currently is pursuing a master’s degree in adult education from the University of Central Oklahoma. Stutzman practiced as a Registered Dental Hygienist in private practice in the Oklahoma City area for eight years prior to joining the OUCOD’s Department of Dental Hygiene. Though she grew up in Texas, Stutzman claims to bleed orange, and insists it’s not burnt orange. She and her husband, Jerrod, are the proud parents of two precious daughters, 2-year-old Brynn and 5-year-old Abigail, who are a constant source of delight and excitement in the Stutzman household. Stutzman enjoys traveling, reading and being pampered — preferably at the same time!

COVER STORY
Dr. Stephen K. Young: 15 Years of Leadership by Dr. John Dmytryk If you believe Kermit, it may be easy being green; but it is certainly not easy being dean. Perhaps this is why deans at U.S. dental schools serve an average of five to eight years. The position of dental dean has been described as all-consuming, demanding and often thankless. Very few have made it look as easy or done it with such grace and dignity as Dr. Young. While many of us were surprised and saddened by Dr. Young’s announcement to step down, few of us stopped to realize that his tenure as dean was one of the longest in the country in recent years, or stopped to think of all that has been accomplished at the OU College of Dentistry under his leadership. Dr. Young joined the OUCOD faculty in 1976 — the year of our very first graduating class. As one of the early foundational faculty members, he has seen the college evolve into what it is today, and from the very start he has played a number of key roles in that evolution. His start came as an assistant professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, and he quickly rose through the ranks, serving as chair of the Department of Oral Diagnosis and Radiology from 1988 to 1995. In 1986, Dr. Young spent one year as a Harry Bruce Legislative Fellow for the American Association of Dental Schools (now known as ADEA, the American Dental Education Association). The 12
political acumen he gained through this experience was put to good use when then Gov. Henry Bellmon threatened the school with closure in 1987. Thanks in large part to Dr. Young’s insight, perseverance and persuasion, this crisis was averted. From there, he ascended to the rank of associate dean for Academic Affairs in 1995. In 1999, Dr. Young was appointed dean — becoming the third dean of the OU College of Dentistry. Later that same year, he received the David Ross Boyd Professorship in recognition of his dedication and effectiveness as a teacher. Indeed, Dr. Young has been named outstanding classroom instructor by no less than seven graduating classes. In his 15 years as dean, Dr. Young accomplished much for the college and the profession of dentistry at large. Throughout his entire term as dean, he has led the college with insight, integrity, fairness and a great sense of humor. Very few deans have been as well liked and well respected both within and outside their colleges as has Dr. Young. Furthermore — thanks in large part

to Dr. Young — the OU College of Dentistry currently enjoys a uniquely strong and symbiotic relationship with the Oklahoma Dental Association and the community of practitioners in the state. The ODA now hosts many events for our students and faculty, and our students learn first hand about the importance of organized dentistry in ensuring the viability of the dental profession. In recognition of his efforts in this regard, Dr. Young was selected in 2005 as the Dentist of the Year by the ODA.
COVER STORY importantly, completely remodeled clinics that provide truly patientcentered comprehensive care. Other infrastructure improvements included the move from paper-based to electronic health records, new clinic management and educational software, and the incorporation of digital radiography. Dr. Young also was instrumental in securing the $10 million NIH-funded Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence grant that led to important research in bacterial biofilms and an expansion of research space and equipment in the college. Under his leadership, the J. Dean Robertson Society (the alumni fundraising organization of the College) has flourished. This strong alumni support has been crucial in providing students scholarships, support for the student research program, and a variety of other school projects and initiatives. He also is a prominent leader in the American Dental Association and the American Dental Education Association. Among his many leadership roles for the ADA, he has served recently as chair of the Council on Dental Education and Licensure and the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations. He is past chair of the ADA Ad Hoc Committee on Ethics and Integrity in Dental Education. Dr. Young also recently completed his term as chair of the Board of Directors of ADEA, where he also chaired the Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental
Education and the Subcommittee on Outcomes Assessment. Within the college, Dr. Young’s legacy as dean will perhaps be remembered best by the aptly termed “Legacy Project.” The Legacy Project was based on an extensive study and analysis of the college and its operations, with input from students, faculty, staff and patients. It outlined an ambitious overhaul of the curriculum, a new model of patientcentered comprehensive care and extensive remodeling of the building to support these changes. Dean Young worked diligently and strategically to secure approximately $15 million to support the Legacy Project through key donations from Delta Dental, the Oklahoma Hospital Trust, the university and others. The extensive remodeling of the facility included new state-of-the-art classrooms and multiple student-centered common areas, updated lighting and, most
Thankfully, Dr. Young’s legacy will continue. He is not retiring, merely stepping aside from the rigors of being dean to devote his time to teaching and continuing to help shape the future of the OU College of Dentistry and our profession. For that we are extremely grateful. Congratulations, Dr. Young!

Students, Staff and Faculty Celebrate Dr. Young’s Tenure as Dean On Jan. 13, students, staff and faculty gathered for a reception in the Commons to celebrate the leadership and guidance provided during Dr. Young’s 15-year tenure as dean of the OU College of Dentistry. In his address to the group, Dr. Young expressed his sincere gratitude and appreciation at having the opportunity to serve as dean and for the opportunity to work for such a length of time alongside people who he greatly respects and enjoys.
“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the college in this capacity. When I came to Oklahoma to continue my career in 1976, I had no intention of staying this long — let alone be the dean for 15 years. Even with all of the ‘you can’t make this stuff up’ kinds of days, I can’t imagine having done it any other way.” –– Dr. Stephen K. Young

Nearly 200 Served During 17th Annual Kids’ Day
On March 28, the OU College of Dentistry held its 17th Annual Kids’ Day. Senior dental students provided nearly 200 children between the ages of 4 and 12 complimentary dental care valued at approximately $45,000. The college and coordinators of the event greatly appreciate the dental supplies and volunteer support provided both within and outside of the College of Dentistry.
“The dental profession has an obligation to give back to the communities in which we live. Kids’ Day allows us to reach out and provide care to those who may not have readily available access to a dental health professional.” –– Dr. Kevin Haney, professor and co-chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry

At the COLLEGE c STUDENTS TAKE MISSION TRIP TO JAMAICA OVER SPRING BREAK
by Daryn Lu
Dental students from the OU College of Dentistry and Washington, D.C., spent their spring break providing care to more than 400 individuals in Treasure Beach, Jamaica. Over the course of four days, they completed 110 cleanings, 144 fillings and 400 extractions. This mission trip, which has been taking place since 2012, offers students the opportunity to step out of their comfort zone and immerse themselves in a different culture. During this experience, students grow clinically and emotionally as they gain a greater understanding of the lifechanging value in providing dental care to those who do not have it readily accessible. They get to learn from great mentors and work alongside dental students from other programs, and the reward of serving such kind people and making a profound difference in their life is priceless.

CEREMONY FOR DENTAL HYGIENE STUDENTS
In February, the Department of Dental Hygiene hosted its inaugural White Coat Ceremony to celebrate the Class of 2016’s transition from pre-clinical education to clinical education, which signifies the start of their careers in health care. “Providing students the opportunity to formally take the Dental Hygiene Oath is a way of demonstrating our high expectations for their obligation to learning, compassion and service,” said Tammie Vargo, Chair of the Dental Hygiene Program. “The presentation of white coats by faculty members is a symbolic way to convey that students can count on the faculty to guide them through their journey to become exceptional healthcare providers.”

Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Jim Kessler by Dr. Stephen K. Young I have known Dr. Jim Kessler since the fall of 1975. We met in an unlikely place — Ann Arbor, Michigan. Jim, a junior dental student, was representing the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry at a student research summit at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, and I had recently completed my specialty training in oral and maxillofacial pathology at Michigan and was headed to Oklahoma to join the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. It is a friendship that has continued for almost 40 years. Over the course of those years, we have spent Friday nights together with our families watching Dallas; taken our children on father, daughter and son ski trips; and we’ve even tried to catch a few fish.
Since Jim announced his retirement a couple months ago, I have had the opportunity to reflect on his contributions to dental education and the dental profession — a career that has taken numerous twists and turns. Jim is a native of Ada, Oklahoma, and graduated from East Central State College in 1973. He was a member of the Class of 1977, the second class to graduate from the OU College of Dentistry. Following graduation, he practiced general dentistry in Norman for two years with 22
Dr. John Miles. From there, he accepted a faculty position in the Department of Fixed Prosthodontics, where he taught with the legendary Dr. Herbert Shillingburg. In 1985, he left OU to move into a faculty position at the Medical College of South Carolina. He returned to Tulsa in 1988 and spent the next 18 years in private practice. In 2007, I got a call from Jim saying he was interested in returning to academics. The timing was right at the college, and he was appointed chair of the Division of Restorative Dentistry. In 2010, he was recruited by, and accepted, a position at the prestigious Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education in Florida to chair their Department of Education. Fortunately, he returned to the OU College of Dentistry in 2012 as a professor of restorative dentistry and director of advanced esthetics and technology. Jim is an amazingly skilled clinician and teacher who is sought out by students for his expertise and ability to communicate concepts. His experiences have made him a featured continuing education speaker both nationally and internationally. In his position as director of advanced esthetics and technology, he also has played a leadership role in incorporating the latest dental technology into our curriculum. During his retirement, Jim will have the opportunity to spend more time at his home in Colorado with his wife, Dee, along with visiting his two grown children — Sarah (Dental Hygiene Class of 2003), who lives in Edmond, and Adam, who lives in Costa Rica. He will be greatly missed, but has agreed to return to his alma mater on a periodic basis to

lecture and plan for the future as new technologies emerge. Jim’s contributions and accomplishments have been an integral component in establishing the OU College of Dentistry’s reputation as an outstanding clinical school. As his friend, I will miss seeing him on a daily basis, but I want to assure him that if he decides to take another twist in his career, there is always an opening at OU.

Student Spotlight: A Word or Two With Daryn Lu With less than a month left in dental school, senior dental student and American Student Dental Association vice president Daryn Lu sat down with OU Dentistry editor Sammie McCracken to share a bit of his dental school experience, his advice for those entering the profession, his Dance Dance Revolution experience and a few items on his bucket list. SM: Daryn Lu … the basics, born and raised? DL: I was born in San Francisco, but grew up in Jacksonville, Florida. I lived in Hong Kong for a few months, England for a few months, a little bit of everywhere, really. But I love San Francisco so much — even though I only lived there a few months — that it’s my Facebook official hometown. I’ve lived in Oklahoma for about 15 years now though, so… SM: But you don’t claim it as home? DL: Well, I do now. Really, it is home. Just not on Facebook. SM: So, why dentistry? When and how did you end up here? DL: [laughs] In 2006, I graduated from UCO with my biology degree and I had no idea what I wanted to do. But somehow I always knew I wanted to go into health care. I thought pediatrics, because my mom runs a tutoring center, and I always enjoyed working with the children. And then my dad works in health care as a pathologist, so between the two of them, I always knew I was headed into health care. But what really sparked my interest in dentistry — and I don’t think I said this during my interview — was the girl I was dating at the time. She said she’d always wanted to marry a dentist [laughing] so I thought, you know, I’ll check it out.
SM: Really? Wow, that’s a great story. DL: I know, right. But seriously, once I shadowed my dentist in Edmond — Dr. Charles Hetrick — I really fell in love with the profession. It was organized. It was meticulously worked. It was interaction with different personalities and helping people. From there, I did a lot of research. I shadowed multiple dentists who practiced a variety of specialties. I invested a lot of time in researching the opportunities the profession provides, and I was sold. SM: After all the research and time invested prior to starting, are there any misconceptions about dental school? DL: I’m not sure I’d call it a misconception, but one thing that you can’t account for is who your class is going to be. Each class seems to take on a personality of its own, and our class and the school administration have been incredibly supportive of all my endeavors outside of the COD. It’s because of my class that I’ve been able to achieve so much when it comes to ASDA — from representing my class in our local OU ASDA chapter, to eventually representing my school as a delegate at the national level, and finally running to serve as vice president of the national organization. All of that is due to the support of my class, college administration and my clinic partner, Troy Smith. He’s been awesome through the whole process. I don’t know if that really answered your question, but it was a welcome “misconception.” SM: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to a current or soon-to-be dental student? DL: Find a mentor, or really, find multiple mentors. I can’t emphasize enough the value of mentorship. Ever since I recognized my interest in dentistry, I did my best to immerse myself and learn all I could in the dental profession. My path has been greatly influenced by some of the most incredible mentors I could ever ask for — dentists I’ve worked with, faculty and staff, my classmates, upper- and underclassmen, and student leaders and dental professionals in organized dentistry from across the nation. SM: What do you see as the future of dentistry? DL: Faster adaptation of new technologies will impact both dental education and how we practice. Younger generations will continue to embrace group-practice models and opportunities
for personal development and collaboration. Interprofessional collaboration will develop in both education and the health care profession. From my perspective, students are becoming more involved and more aware of the issues in dentistry. As long as students and emerging graduates stay well informed and take ownership of the profession, dentistry will continue to grow and be a great profession. SM: Switching gears. Give me one fun, unknown fact about Daryn Lu. DL: I’ll give you two. [Starts laughing] During my undergraduate years, I lost 40 pounds playing Dance Dance Revolution, the dancing arcade game. SM: Wow. That’s impressive. Was weight loss your motivation? [both laughing at this point] DL: Not initially, But I was actually really good at, and I had a lot of fun playing it with my friends, so once I noticed the weight coming off, it was just more motivation to keep going. The second fun fact is that I’ve been the panda bear mascot at the UCO Asian Moon Festival for the Asian American Student Organization for the past five out of six years. SM: I’m impressed. Very cool, fun facts. SM: Last thing. What’s currently on your bucket list? DL: Visit all the Disney parks across the world. I have Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong left to do! I also want to travel to Myanmar to see where my parents grew up, and build my own prop proton pack like from my favorite movie, “Ghostbusters.”

STUDENT COUNCIL The primary duties of the Student Council are to assist students in any issues that arise and provide fun activities for the students. Currently, the Student Council provides coffee each day for all of the students, coordinates social events, represents the College of Dentistry on campus and addresses any student concerns. Fall semester events included the annual Volleyball Tournament, Dental Olympics with ASDA, a Halloween Party and a winter-themed party. They are in the process of coordinating a spring social event, Dental Prom, and providing complimentary tickets for students to attend a Baron’s Hockey Game on Dental Appreciation night with the ODA. At the end of the year, the Student Council will hold its End-of-the-Year Class Awards Ceremony. All meetings are held on the third Wednesday of every month at 5 p.m. All dental students and faculty are welcome and encouraged to attend.
AMERICAN STUDENT DENTAL ASSOCIATION The OU chapter of the American Student Dental Association passionately fulfills its promise to its members by cultivating an environment of growth and support. As a recruitment chapter, OU ASDA actively seeks methods to encourage membership through the procurement of partnerships with local sponsors. OU ASDA helps offset the demands of dental school by providing perspective and encouraging members to engage in their future dental profession through new and unique events. These events include local leadership conferences, fall and spring vendor fairs, Casino Royale, Dental Olympics and even a yearlong health and wellness initiative coined “ASDA GetFit.” Engagement is further encouraged through the recent implementation of six OU ASDA Leadership Scholarships, which allow general ASDA members who express a passion for organized dentistry and leadership to join OU ASDA Officers at the three national ASDA conferences. New initiatives, such as attendance at these conferences, improve the overall student experience and educate beyond the lecture hall on such important topics as financial education. OU ASDA members hope their leadership, creativity and work ethic will encourage all chapters across the nation to do more for their students.

This presentation will consider the specific diagnostic steps necessary to perform a truly comprehensive examination, and how to gather appropriate materials in an organized and efficient manner. The presenters also will examine methods for sequencing treatment and determining fees that allow complex dentistry to be more practical for patients and more profitable for practitioners. During the afternoon presentation, each presenter will have the opportunity to discuss how they might plan, sequence and establish treatment plans and fees for multiple case studies.
