A Message from the President October, 2017 Dear Ouimet Fund Friends, This past year at the Ouimet Fund has been one of remarkable achievement and growth. Special thanks go to our many great benefactors, our Board and our tremendous Ouimet staff who have been persistent and dedicated in executing and communicating our need-based mission: helping our Scholars by giving back to golf. Our mission is resonating in the marketplace. In 2017-2018, we will award $2 Million, a $150,000 increase over last year. The $2 Million figure is the milestone number we targeted in our Centennial Campaign – it’s a great moment for us! This represents growth of 25% in total awards in just three years. A big part of that was a tremendous $3 Million endowed scholarship gift from the Harold Whitworth Pierce Foundation, and another $200,000 from the Peter Lynch Foundation. Both are dedicated to our very successful inner-city program. We owe a big thanks to former Development Chair Dick Reilly for his help with the Pierce Foundation gift. And, while our funding continues to grow, we are facing enormous growth in scholarship applications and the “unmet need” of our students in meeting tuition costs also grows faster than we can meet it. The number of Scholars – financial and honorary – is now nearly 500 and financial need is $5 Million. We simply MUST continue to push our fundraising to help this next generation and sustain our mission. As we go to press, we have 140 permanently endowed scholarships. Our endowed funds are now yielding $720,000 annually, which is approximately 36% of the $2 Million we are awarding. Our total endowment is $16 Million – equal to that of some small colleges. We are also delighted that we can point to wonderful growth in three special target areas over the past five years: minority Scholars are up 230%, inner-city Scholars have increased 150%, and female Scholars are up 94%. We have 23 endowed awards targeted to inner-city students. Our scholarship program is a very strong process that has become increasingly competitive. We have great pride in our needbased mission that has one basic principle – those who need more get more. Scholars were also involved in our endowed scholarship reception, other Ouimet events, and, for the 15th year, the Dale Carnegie program which John MacKinnon generously provides. This year he expanded it to add the venue TGC at Sacconnesset in addition to the courses at Bentley University. Greg Gailius presents the Francis Ouimet Award for Contributions to Golf to Nick Price at the Banquet in March.

We have many programs that help with our annual fundraising. The most visible, of course, is our biggest-in-the-U.S. Annual Banquet. Last year, we had a superb Honoree in Nick Price. Ouimet Scholar Jenn Barry told a story of her studies in nursing, helping her mother with difficult cancer treatments, and a service project with the very poor in Indonesia. A special highlight was a moving remembrance of Arnold Palmer by his long-time friend and Ouimet Banquet sponsor Dick Connolly. And, we can’t talk about the Banquet without remembering Tom Martin, whose Cramer production team has produced these Banquets since 1997 and helped in so many other ways. Tom died in July, but will always be remembered at The Fund. We made two major changes that should help greatly in the future. We celebrated our 25th Ouimet Golf Marathon and moved it to a new site – Juniper Hill Golf Course. We put a new focus on the Marathon, including Greg Gailius with new President Jim Blue (right) at the Annual Meeting. expanding our online emphasis, added a dozen new participants and grew donations by $35,000. We also managed the Ouimet Memorial Tournament for the last time, as we are transferring it to the Massachusetts Golf Association in the future to concentrate on other initiatives. We celebrated 50 years of the Tournament with a special dinner and honored Chair Dick Connolly for his 39 years of service. The Annual and Alumni Funds continue to grow. We are looking at ways to broaden fundraising, and present more options, including planned giving. This fall featured a new “Giving Week” that was quite successful with a major push in social media and many more new donors. Team Ouimet also had another good year at the Boston Marathon and Falmouth Road Race. Club Relations is always a priority. We are proud that so many of our Scholars come from our supporting clubs and our Bag Tag Program is such an important piece of our Scholarship Awards. Thank you to the more than 80 club memberships that support the vital program. Our Board is a backbone for us and I pass on my special thanks to all of our members. We are continually seeking to broaden and strengthen it, including having a special offsite day the past two years. The Board and staff work hard to control costs and enhance our operational efficiency, and our many committees contribute so much to us. Finally, this is my last letter as President of the Ouimet Fund. It has been my great pleasure to serve this wonderful group that is so committed to “giving back” to the game we love. Jim Blue is succeeding me as President, and we have a very fine team in place. Mr. Ouimet died 50 years ago this September, but I think he’d be very happy to see his legacy continue to thrive. Sincerely,

Gregory J. Gailius President, Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund

hroughout this publication you will see the word “Impact” highlighted. In fact, the publication has been re-named the Annual Impact Report. Impact refers to many ways that our supporters are making a difference in the lives of Ouimet Scholars. It can be the impact of our donors, Directors, Trustees and staff, recognition awards, our special programs, impact on individual scholars, impact of volunteers who do so much to help with fundraising, in-kind donations and communication. The result, the success of our Ouimet Scholar graduates, continues to speak for itself but we hope you find it informative in sharing the specifics in the Annual Impact Report. We thank all of you for finding your various ways to impact the Ouimet Fund and the Ouimet Scholars every year!

Presidential Preview O

n October 23, Jim Blue began his two-year term as President of the Ouimet Fund following Greg Gailius. We are excited to welcome Jim as the new leader of our organization!

I was introduced to the legacy of Francis Ouimet through my father, Ray Blue, who had the pleasure of knowing Francis due to his love of golf and Brookline roots. In fact, my father was also fortunate to play a few rounds with Francis, as well. My introduction to the Ouimet Fund was through my good friend, Terry Kennedy, who asked me to attend a meeting and the mission of The Fund and the great people associated with it made the decision to join very easy.

From my perspective, it’s always about the Scholars, the Alums and the Ouimet Fund Community. I am excited for continued growth, new ideas and continuing to help worthy women and men achieve their goals through a college education.

The needs of our Scholars have never been greater and I am certain the Ouimet Community will continue to work hard to meet these demands. We are so fortunate to be able to help others through a game we all love.

2017 Ouimet Banquet Highlights Price Honored

N

ick Price, winner of three major championships, three-time Captain of the Presidents Cup International team and a Golf Hall of Fame member was the guest speaker and honored with the 20th Francis Ouimet Award for Lifelong Contributions to Golf at the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund’s 66th Annual Banquet. The Banquet, which has become the largest annual golf dinner in the U.S., was held Monday, March 13 at the Sheraton Boston Hotel. The Connolly Group – Morgan Stanley was again the Presenting Sponsor.

Other Special Features

In addition to Mr. Price, the special evening also featured a heartfelt Dick Connolly shares stories as a tribute to his great friend Arnold Palmer. remembrance of Arnold Palmer by his long-time friend and financial advisor Dick Connolly and a moving talk by Student Speaker Jenn Barry of Woodland and Quinnipiac University. “We were thrilled to have Nick Price as our 2017 honoree and also to have Dave Marr III again so ably serve as our Master of Ceremonies. Nick has an amazing record and is certainly one of the top players of the past 25 years. He has also become highly respected with his work with the Presidents Cup and is known as one of the nicest people in the game. It was also so special to hear Dick speak of Arnold Palmer – you could hear a pin dropand to learn everything Jenn Barry has accomplished,” said Greg Gailius, Ouimet Fund President. The large Banquet audience was thrilled to hear the many stories Mr. Price shared in his sit-down interview with Mr. Marr, and especially to hear him speak of his late mother. As is the tradition at these banquets, the honoree designates someone in whose name a permanent Ouimet scholarship will be created, and Nick selected his late mom, Wendy Price.

Club Relations Program Worcester Country Club's caddie program remains one of the best in the Commonwealth, leading to many Scholars this year!

T

he Ouimet Fund is thankful for the more than 60 years of support from its generous clubs, their staffs and memberships, who are always committed to our organization’s mission. The thousands of members across the state who annually make up Ouimet’s largest program continue to be a key to the scholarship records. In addition to their personal and collective financial support, the clubs each play a role in being the final links to promoting the Scholarship opportunity to young people who are searching for help in funding their college education.

Bag Tag Program

The Ouimet Fund extends a heartfelt thank you to the thousands of club members who support the annual Ouimet Bag Tag program. Since 1955, members from nearly 100 clubs have made this commitment to the Bag Tag program and it continues to make a tangible impact in helping thousands afford their higher education and thrive during their time in college. These members, along with key club contacts, are the important link to promote the Scholarship opportunities to the young golf workers at their club. We believe the mentorship of the young men and women along with the financial support contribute greatly to the success of the Ouimet Scholars in college. We encourage individuals to get their club started (or more involved) by contacting the Ouimet Fund office.

Ouimet Chairs & Club Leadership

We thank the individual Ouimet Chairs who work tirelessly throughout the calendar year to help maximize this great partnership between their club and the Ouimet Fund. Ouimet Chairs are instrumental in facilitating the Bag Tag Program in conjunction with the Head Professionals and the General Managers (and their staffs). They ensure that the provided Scholar photo plaques are hung prominently each spring, post Scholarship recipient news in club communications, recruit Golf Marathon and other Ouimet program participation, and encourage the young golf employees to apply for the scholarship opportunities. Side by side with the Ouimet Chairs, any club representative is encouraged to take an active role in enhancing these programs, directing the kids to Ouimet.org to apply, and even participating in the applicant interview sessions throughout the spring. Those who are involved in the interview opportunities across the state, continue to comment how rewarding it is to see, first-hand, the scholarship process come full circle.

he Ouimet Chair serves in a variety of capacities at the approximately 100 Massachusetts clubs that actively support the Ouimet Fund. Ouimet Chairs coordinate sales of the Ouimet Bag Tags at each club, which is The Fund’s most important fundraising source. They may help in the development of caddie programs, recruit young workers to apply for the Ouimet Scholarship, interview prospective applicants and arrange for their club to be an interview site. Ouimet Chairs may also help in a variety of other fundraising roles, including recruiting Lifetime Members of the Ouimet Society, introducing new “Friends of The Fund” who want to elevate their impact on our annual awards, arranging for their club to participate in the Golf Marathon and the Annual Banquet, or hosting events.

he Ouimet Fund congratulates Ouimet Fund Board Member, Patrick Fischoeder, on his selection as the 2017 Ouimet Chair of the Year representing The Country Club! Mr. Fischoeder is a member at both The Country Club and The Kittansett Club and works tirelessly throughout the year to enhance many Ouimet programs at each. He first served as the Ouimet Chair at Kittansett in 2013 and 2014 and has now served in that role at TCC for the past four years. His efforts were recognized in front of many of his peers at The Fund’s 2017 Annual Meeting. Patrick spends his days as a Client Advisor at Rockefeller & Company in Boston, but is always available to talk about his “next Ouimet thought.” Along with the club’s leadership, Patrick has led recent Bag Tag program efforts at TCC as well as bolstering their roster of Ouimet Scholars. The Country Club, during his Ouimet Chair tenure, has also consistently been in the top three for the Golf Marathon fundraising. Most recently, Patrick has expanded visibility of Scholar success stories and new fundraising initiatives. He has been instrumental in four new endowed Scholarships being created by Kittansett and TCC members and their families. These examples of elevated support from individuals are part of a growing Endowed Scholarship Program that is making an even greater impact on our annual awards. (You can read more on page 24). Also, Patrick’s involvement in Member/Caddie outings at both clubs has been a model that other clubs have implemented to add value for the members and strengthen the mentorship opportunities to the young loopers. In addition to caddie speakers at these events, an inaugural reception was held at TCC this year for members to hear from The Fund and three of their own Ouimet Alumni. His concept to get up close and personal with former caddies who have gone on to success after graduation reinforced what each member invests in with their donations. His outreach for new Bag Tag and Golf Marathon support is widespread and he often serves as an enthusiastic Ouimet representative when meeting with other long-time Patrick Fischoeder (left) presents a plaque supporting clubs. Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament Parziale, DiBiase and Eleey win Divisions in 50th Ouimet Memorial

F

(L-R) MGA Executive Director Jesse Menachem, Ouimet President Greg Gailius, OMT Chair Dick Connolly, Ouimet Executive Director Bob Donovan and MGA President Tom Bagley with the Ouimet Memorial Champions Jacqueline Eleey (Women's Division), Matt Parziale (Championship Division) and Jim DiBiase (Lowery Senior Division) after the completion of Friday’s round at Woodland Golf Club.

or the 50th Playing of the Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament, we returned to three of the earliest and most prestigious sites: Brae Burn Country Club, The Country Club and Woodland Golf Club, where Mr. Ouimet was a member and the tournament historically concludes. Our fantastic host sites were met with tremendous play, ultimately ending with a 2-stroke victory for Matt Parziale who hoisted the Connolly Trophy for the third time. The victory certainly was not uncontested as Mr. Parziale had to make some birdies on the back 9 to stay ahead of Bobby Leopold and Patrick Frodigh who each finished two back. Mr. Frodigh posted the round of the day (66) to put pressure on the leaders. The Ouimet Memorial victory was part of a magical season for Mr. Parziale, which was capped by his winning the USGA Mid-Amateur Championship in October. In the Lowery Senior Division, Jim DiBiase of Woodland Golf Club was able to take advantage of the final round home field advantage and overcome a three-shot deficit en route to his first Ouimet Memorial Tournament victory. He was neck and neck with second round leader Kevin Carey of Dennis Pines GC, but finished with a very strong 1 under par 71 to seal the 1-stroke victory. Taking third place in the Lowery Division was Steven Tasho of Thorny Lea GC. Jacqueline Eleey of South Shore Country Club cruised to her first Ouimet Women’s Division victory by a 5-shot margin. Matt Parziale won his third Richard F. Connolly, Sr. Trophy honors at the Ouimet Memorial Tournament this July. The Richard F. Connolly, Sr. Trophy was commissioned by Richard F. Connolly, Jr. in honor of his late father. It features clubs used at one time by Francis Ouimet, Harry Vardon and Ted Ray and silver balls on which the year and name of each annual champion are inscribed. Special replicas and a mounted ball are presented to the champion.

History and Arnold Palmer Remembered

The Tournament was kicked off with a special 50th Player’s Dinner at Brae Burn which was attended by numerous former champs, the family of Mr. Ouimet, tournament founder Tom Barrett and first champion Ben Murphy and many others who had a role in the history of the event. Dick Connolly, the 39-year Chair of the Tournament, sponsored the dinner and was specially recognized. Arnold Palmer, who had been Honorary Chair from 2000 until his death in 2016, was named as "Honorary Chair in Memoriam" this year.

OMT to Transition to MGA

The Ouimet Fund expresses its special thanks to the Massachusetts Golf Association for a strong role in co-managing the 50th playing this year, and for developing a wonderful story on the event’s history in the Mass Golfer Magazine. In 2018, the Tournament will transition completely to the MGA. In closing the Ouimet Memorial Tournament chapter, The Fund updated a statement it made when the transition was announced: Cynthia Wilcox, a Ouimet Director and daughter of Eddie Lowery, presents the Lowery Trophy to Senior Division winner Jim DiBiase. “This has been a difficult, but the correct decision for the Ouimet Fund. We had 50 wonderful years with the Ouimet Memorial Tournament, but the expectations and needs of tournament management today are much more than our small staff can handle. We only do one major competitive golf tournament a year, and feel the event and the field will be much better served with the MGA’s great team managing it. The Ouimet Fund will be able to concentrate on fundraising events like the Golf Marathon, and our Club Relations and major gifts efforts which are much closer to our core mission of supporting our Scholars,” said Ouimet Fund President Greg Gailius.

SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS Sign Up and Apply Online! Two Years of Service to Golf

An applicant interviews on Super Saturday at Golf House in Norton. This past year, over 175 young people interviewed for Ouimet Scholarships!

Current High School Seniors or Full-Time College Students

Who becomes a Ouimet Scholar? Scholarship applicants are first judged across a wide range of categories on a “point scale.” These categories include academic achievement and leadership, school/community activities, the applicant interview with 4-5 Ouimet volunteers, essays, character and integrity, service to golf and the multiple recommendations received in the application. Applicants who then reach the required point threshold, which varies year to year based on the applicant class, are considered Ouimet Scholars. Subsequent years, to maintain this status, Scholars need only reapply with a much simpler “update form” and copy of their transcript indicating full-time student status.

How are monetary Ouimet Scholarships determined? The certified financial need of the Ouimet Scholars is then analyzed through tuition costs, college grants and the estimated family contribution through the submitted CSS and FAFSA forms. Ouimet Scholarships are need-based and can be renewable for four years if a student remains enrolled. Scholars who demonstrate no financial need, due to the variety of factors referenced above, are considered “Honorary Scholars” and receive no cash award. Honorary Scholars are Ouimet Scholars and are invited to and included in all other Ouimet Scholar/Alumni activities.

Important information to note:

• The December 1st deadline is a hard deadline for students seeking Ouimet Scholar status/scholarship award the following year. There are no exceptions and many applicants miss a year of eligibility by failing to submit all the necessary forms to the online application portal.

• The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund is an equal opportunity scholarship program and does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, religion or ethnic origin. 2 0 1 7 I M PA C T R E P O R T

he Fund hosted nearly 200 guests at its 15th Annual Investing in Lifetimes Reception in June at Wellesley Country Club - our largest group ever! This annual event is a special opportunity for endowed scholarship creators (and those considering it) to meet the young people they are investing in face-to-face. Donors and recipients have both commented that this is always one of the best nights of the year. This year’s speaker was Alumnus Daniel McLaughlin ’78 who had worked at Ponkapoag Golf Course in Canton as a teen and received the Ouimet Scholarship throughout his four years at Miami University in Ohio. This year, Mr. McLaughlin and his wife, Julie, created an endowed scholarship in honor of Ken Campbell and Bob Beach, two golf professionals who have had a profound impact on many people. Mr. McLaughlin spoke about how important their contributions have been and why he and his wife chose to recognize them.

Current Scholars and Alumni were among the group of nearly 200 guests at the Investing in Lifetimes Reception at Wellesley Country Club.

Endowed Scholarship Program T

he Ouimet Fund has a full range of permanently endowed scholarships. Each of these awards has been funded by contributions from groups or families and is named after an individual or organization who is or was deeply committed to golf and the importance of higher education. Each year, recipients of the Endowed Ouimet Scholarships receive additional “surprise” funds in the middle of their fall semester above and beyond their fall/spring award. Students are also able to personally thank the endowed donor in a number of ways and the donor get an annual report on the status of their investment as well as the success of the Scholar they are investing in. Listed on the previous pages are the 140 Ouimet Endowed Scholarships, including newly created ones through September 2017. Harold Whitworth Pierce (right) was a renowned figure in golf and The total funds in the Ouimet Endowed program currently surpasses investment and had been President of The Country Club, MGA and USGA. $16 Million. This is a very important piece of the scholarship pie, as He was very friendly with Francis Ouimet and served with him on the USGA Executive Committee. This year, an award in his name was created it accounts for approximately 36% of total scholarship dollars awarded after The Fund received the largest gift in its history from the Harold each year. Whitworth Pierce Charitable Trust. Endowed Scholarships, which are created with a commitment of at least $50,000, may be funded over 2-5 years. The program offers the donor the ability to tailor their gift and the resulting named award to suit their philanthropic goals. Upon reaching the minimum balance, a 5% draw on the principal is made each year toward scholarships. The additional awards are made to the selected student and there is an opportunity for the donors and recipients to meet at our annual Investing in Lifetimes Reception. If you have any questions about whether an Endowed Ouimet Scholarship is right for you or your family please feel free to reach out to the Ouimet office at 774-430-9090.

The Denny Goodrich Honorary Ouimet Alumnus Award T

he Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund renamed its “Honorary Alumnus Award” after Denny Goodrich when he retired from the Ouimet Fund’s Board of Directors in 2009 after 37 years of service. Mr. Goodrich, of Dedham Country and Polo Club, was the inaugural recipient of the award in 2003 and also the Ouimet Fund’s Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award’s awardee in its debut year of 2000. For 13 years, he served as the Vice Chair of the Ouimet Fund’s Annual Banquets. He was Ouimet President from 1990-1992. Denny is the epitome of a Ouimet Alumnus, and this is a very small way to always remember his immense contributions to The Fund.

Paul Quinn – 2017

T

he Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund’s Alumni Committee awarded its 2017 Denny Goodrich Ouimet Honorary Alumnus Award to longtime Longmeadow Country Club caddie master Paul Quinn.

52 Years of Service

Mr. Quinn has worked at Longmeadow for the past 52 years and has been caddie master since 1972. He and his wife, Jean, also have a son, Brian, who was a Ouimet Scholar, played the Ouimet Marathon for Longmeadow for several years and was involved in numerous Ouimet activities. Longmeadow Country Club has long been considered one of the strongest clubs in the state in terms of Ouimet support and its caddie program is regarded as the best in Western Massachusetts. Mr. Quinn has recruited and trained caddies for 45 years, and many have gone on to become Ouimet 2003 Denny Goodrich Paul Quinn Scholars. He annually helps coordinate fundraising for 2004 Dick Foley Longmeadow’s Ouimet Marathon participation. He has also participated/helped coordinate 2005 Jimmy Noris Ouimet Scholarship applicant interviews at Longmeadow annually. This year he organized 2006 John MacKinnon a very special caddie reunion dinner that featured many special talks. The highlight was one 2007 Jack Neville by Dr. Arthur Logan, a Ouimet Scholar from the original 1949 “Class of 13.” Proceeds of that event benefitted the Ouimet Fund. 2008 Jim & Lois Gaquin 2009 Dave Adamonis, Sr. Keeping the Tradition Alive “The caddie master is often a critical link in Ouimet support at many clubs. Paul 2010 Mike Haberl, Rick Johnson & Quinn is so dedicated in what he does to make Longmeadow’s program outstanding. He Ed Walsh epitomizes a great caddie master and has done so much to keep that tremendous tradition 2011 Walt Lankau alive at Longmeadow. We are delighted to honor, recognize, and thank him for all he has 2012 Phil Psaros done,” said Ouimet Fund President Greg Gailius. 2013 Bob Travers, Jr. The “Honorary Alumnus” designation seeks to acknowledge that there are many 2014 Peter Maich people who have been important to the Ouimet Fund and/or the game that either did not need assistance or did not apply for assistance when they went to college. The “service to 2015 Terry Carleton golf” or great involvement with the game could be as a volunteer, as their career, or possibly 2016 Joseph Onstott as a competitor. The candidate must have been generous in their support of the Ouimet 2017 Paul Quinn Fund, either by contributing financially or by volunteer or exceptional professional service.

Inner-City Programs Green Hill Municipal Golf Course caddies enjoyed Ouimet Night at Fenway in September thanks to the generosity of the Highland Street Foundation.

BOSTON

The Ouimet Fund is celebrating its 20th year of awarding scholarships to inner-city graduates of the City of Boston Golf Management Program at Franklin Park and George Wright Golf Courses. Again this year, The Fund has made a major effort to meet with students and parents to encourage them to take advantage of their eligibility to apply for Ouimet Scholarships. The Golf Management Summer Program is open to high school students from Boston and its neighborhoods (Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, Hyde Park, Mattapan, Roslindale, Roxbury, etc.). This program has benefitted 121 Boston students with over $1.2 Million in Ouimet Scholarships.

WORCESTER

The Ouimet Fund was proud to continue its inner-city Scholar initiative this year by assisting the growth of the Caddie Project at Worcester’s Green Hill Golf Course. “A major goal of ours has been to grow Ouimet inner-city participation, and we saw the Green Hill program as a wonderful way to start young people in caddying and developing a path to eventually becoming Ouimet Scholars,” said Ouimet Fund President Greg Gailius. Beginning last summer, several major foundations in the Worcester area committed funding to launch the first three years and nine community based organizations partnered with the project in recruiting potential caddies and transporting them. The second-year program saw 40% participant growth as it reached 21 young men and women this year, some of whom had never been on a golf course before. Ouimet Scholar Brandon Locke (UMass Amherst ’18 & Tatnuck CC) continued his position as the Caddie Master, holding training sessions for his young caddies, as well as being instrumental in communications with the Caddie Programs’ partners as well as staff at the Ouimet Fund.

Dick Connolly Reflects on His Friend, Arnold Palmer M

r. Connolly, a proud Ouimet Scholarship Alumnus, former President and Trustee has proudly served the Ouimet Fund for over 40 years. Mr. Connolly is the embodiment of everything a Ouimet volunteer and Alumnus can be. For the past 39 years, he has been the Chairman of the Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament. He has also underwritten the production of the Richard F. Connolly, Sr. Trophy, the Ouimet Memorial’s permanent trophy that is one of the most unique in golf. Mr. Connolly has been the driving force in starting the Francis Ouimet Lifelong Contributions to Golf Award Annual Banquets thanks to his close relationship with Arnold Palmer, and he has personally sponsored this dinner every year. Mr. Connolly has also helped The Fund in many other ways. In 2017, we had a departure from our normal format and elected to forego the Connolly award. Instead, Dick Connolly fondly recalled memories of his dear friend, Mr. Palmer, who died in 2016. Mr. Connolly served for over 30 years as Mr. Palmer's financial advisor and reflected on Arnold, his contributions to golf, their friendship, and Mr. Palmer’s contributions to the Ouimet Fund. Those contributions were recognized when he was presented the Connolly Award at our Centennial Gala in 2013. The “new era” of Ouimet Fund Banquets began in 1997 when Arnold accepted Mr. Connolly’s invitation to become the Banquet’s guest speaker and first recipient of the Francis Ouimet Award for Lifelong Contributions to Golf. Mr. Palmer’s appearance helped bring the dinner and the Ouimet Fund to a new level as 1,400 guests were on hand. Over the next few years, the Ouimet Banquet secured its position as the largest golf dinner in the U.S., and Mr. Palmer frequently helped recruit honorees of the evenings. In 2000, Mr. Palmer succeeded Gene Sarazen, who died in 1999, as Honorary Chair of the Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament. In 2011, Mr. Palmer agreed to be Honorary Chair of the Ouimet Centennial Celebration. He then graciously also agreed to be presented with the 2013 Connolly Award at The Fund’s Centennial Gala. There were 2,100 guests on hand – the largest ever for a golf banquet in the United States. He was joined on stage by Golf Channel’s Rich Lerner, the Master of Ceremonies, Peter Jacobsen and Mark Frost, the author of The Greatest Game Ever Played, and the late Bill Paxton, the director of the movie of the same name. Finally, the Ouimet Fund is extremely grateful that Mr. Palmer had been a friend to Dick Connolly and our mission. We were proud to present the Connolly Award to Arnold in 2013, who as much as any other player ever, embodied so much of what Francis Ouimet was to American golf. Most of all, we were proud to remember him at our Banquet where Mr. Connolly led a toast to say, "Thanks, Arnold."

Student Support & Activities

here are other ways that supporters of The Fund are making an impact on the lives of our Ouimet Scholars by offering participatory programs to them each year. Here’s a look at two of these opportunities in 2017:

Scholars Caddie in Dell Technologies Championship

The Ouimet Fund once again provided caddies for the Dell Technologies Championship (formally known as the Deutsche Bank Championship) Pro-Am in September. Scholars and Alumni walked the fairways of TPC Boston alongside PGA TOUR standouts Rickie Fowler, Henrik Stenson, and Jordan Speith. We thank the PGA TOUR for its annual financial contribution following the championship.

Dale Carnegie

As a special offering, the 15th Annual Ouimet Dale Carnegie “Generation Next – Effective Leadership and Communications” course was held at two locations, creating increased enrollment of Ouimet Scholars to take advantage of the opportunity. The Bentley University and TGC at Sacconnesset (Falmouth) locations were both eight-week programs Ouimet Alumnus Patrick Heffernan '13 (pictured and was a fantastic benefit for those living both on and off the Cape Cod area during the here with Matt Kuchar) caddied in the Dell summer. A record 45 Ouimet Scholars graduated from the eight-week programs in 2017. Technology Championship Pro-Am at TPC Boston. Mr. MacKinnon, a Director and Ouimet Society Lifetime Member from Charles River CC, developed the program and donates free admission (a value of over $1,500 each) to Ouimet Scholars. Each year, graduates of the course report that it was one of the most beneficial they have ever taken, and we are delighted that over 300 Ouimet Scholars have received this great benefit over the years. The Fund wishes to thank Mr. MacKinnon for his dedication to providing our Scholars with this excellent program, and would also like to extend appreciation to Terry Carleton, Bentley University, and TGC at Sacconnesset for contributing the weekly meeting space. This summer, over 40 Ouimet Scholars successfully completed a customized Dale Carnegie course at both Bentley University (pictured) or at TGC at Sacconesset in Falmouth.

Remembering Mr. Ouimet & His Legacy A memorial floral arrangement was placed at the Brookline grave of Francis Ouimet to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his passing on September 2, 1967. Mr. Ouimet had been in good health and worked at Brown Brothers Harriman the day before suffering a heart attack in late August of 1967. He lingered for ten days before dying at age 74. Boston newspapers reported daily on his status, and had major stories on his life when he passed. His lifelong friend Gene Sarazen was among the pall bearers. Mr. Sarazen is remembered as the last to leave the cemetery and knocked on his friend’s casket and said, “fast greens, Francis.” It was a message to be sure that the greens on the course in heaven were the way Mr. Ouimet liked them. Mr. Ouimet is, of course, best remembered for his dramatic 1913 U.S. Open victory, his Hall of Fame golf career, his standing as an international golfing goodwill ambassador, and his great kindness. He was honored in many ways, but considered his greatest honor the creation of the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund in 1949.

Ouimet Alums Bill Sheehan (L) and Ed Carbone flank Caitlin Wallerce, Francis Ouimet’s great granddaughter at the U.S. Senior Open Championship at Salem Country Club in July. Mr. Sheehan was General Chair of the Championship and Mr. Carbone served as Executive Director. Mrs. Wallerce was on-hand for the presentation of the Francis Ouimet Trophy to Senior Open Champion Kenny Perry.

Ouimet Fund Spring Outing – Woods Hole Golf Club

The first Outing of the year brought players to Cape Cod at the beautiful Woods Hole Golf Club. The scenic views and beautiful weather were no distraction for the group of Ryan Magner, Tyler Ferrari, Adam Britt and Jack Magner who shot a net score of 55 and had their names etched on the William Ellison Trophy. Also hoisting trophies at Woods Hole were the gross and net winners of the Scheft Trophy, Jim & Mary Moriarty and Jack & Jane Welch. Following the awards, guests heard from long-time Woods Hole caddie and current Scholar, Jesse Borgese (Providence College ’19) about the impact the Ouimet Fund has had on his life. Thank you to Woods Hole Ouimet Chair John Butterworth and PGA Professional Glenn Kelly for hosting us and drawing up a picture-perfect day!

Ouimet Fund Fall Pro-Am Outing – Wellesley Country Club

Supporters came together for a spectacular fall day at Wellesley Country Club in early October. A group of forecaddies ready for the shotgun at Woods Hole. As had been the tradition of the Fall Outing for the past 17 years, amateur groups were paired with dedicated NEPGA Professionals from Ouimet supporting clubs. Some great golf was seen on a pristine and challenging golf course. Winning low gross was the team of Terry Kennedy, Dave Gooding, Joe Mahoney, Ciaran Hynes and Steve Mann (Head Professional at Wollaston Golf Club). The low net team, and winners of the MacMillan Trophy was the team of Ken Johnson, TJ Jurevic, Paul Malaguti, Todd Needham and Matt Zdon (Head Professional at Belmont Country Club). Taking the low pro honors for the day was Scott Johnson (Head Professional at Oakley Country Club). A special thank you goes to all NEPGA Professionals who participated in this year’s event and continue to help the organization in so many ways. Sincere appreciation also goes to Wellesley Country Club hosts: Ouimet Chair Ed Vahey, PGA Golf Professional Jeff Phillips, and the staff and membership at Wellesley Country Club!

Golfers enjoyed a beautiful day at Wellesley CC in October, including (L-R) Tim O’Connor, Bill Helm, Diamo Streaser (Assistant Professional from The Country Club) and Bill Kelleher.

Ouimet Annual Meeting & Outing – Marshfield Country Club The Fund’s 2017 Annual Meeting and Golf Outing were both filled to capacity on October 23 at Marshfield Country Club. The sellout crowd enjoyed a perfect day on the immaculate greens at Marshfield, were able to attend the Annual business meeting, and then had the opportunity to hear from Owen McGrath, a current Scholar and Aerospace Engineering major at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Owen shared the story of how Ouimet support has helped to keep him enrolled at WPI and enable him to follow his dream of becoming an Aerospace Engineer. A great time was had by all on the challenging layout of Marshfield Country Club. Winning the net division was the team of David Bamel, Lou Dennis, Mark Smith and Rich Weiner. Gross winners Bill Hanlon, Kevin O’Connor, Joe Morrison and James Antonelli represented the host club. A special thanks to Ouimet Chair Bill Hanlon, Club Manager Dan Hall and PGA Professional James Antonelli for putting together such a great day.

Providence College '19 I wonder if the donors to this scholarship realize how much of an impact their financial support has been. For the donor, it is another donation. For the recipient, it is a powerful force in direction. It has guided me in choosing a future career. My education at Providence was made possible because of your generous contributions to the Ouimet Fund. The Ouimet Scholarship has given me the opportunity to achieve all that I have in the first two years at Providence College.

Bob Green Honored With Ouimet Golf Professional Of The Year Award

T

he Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund presented its inaugural Ouimet Golf Professional of the Year award to long-time Tedesco Country Club professional Bob Green at a Ouimet outing at Wellesley CC on October 2. The award will annually recognize a New England PGA Professional for not only their efforts and achievements in guiding the young men and women who work for them to the Francis Ouimet Scholarship, but also their ongoing mentoring Tedesco CC Head Professional Bob Green poses with his family (Hannah Green ’12, through college and beyond. Connor Green ’17, Emily Green ’07, and wife, Debbie) at Wellesley Country Club. The recipient will be someone who works closely with The Fund and plays an important role in promoting both the scholarship to kids, their parents and also the various Ouimet programs to the club membership.

Guiding 140 Ouimet Scholars

As parents of four Ouimet Scholars, my wife and I know firsthand how important the scholarship is when it comes to the burden of today’s college tuitions. The honor of being a Ouimet Scholar will be a valued honor the rest of the recipients’ lives. A Scholar should list it prominently on their resumes. -Bob Green

36

O U I M E T. O R G

Mr. Green, who has been head professional at Tedesco for 39 years, is one of the strongest promoters of the scholarship. Over the years, Bob has been serving as the Head Golf Professional, Tedesco has had 140 Ouimet Scholars including all four of his children who worked as caddies or in the pro shop. Each fall, Bob organizes a meeting with all potential scholarship recipients and their parents to explain the benefits of being a Ouimet Scholar and offers them help on how to navigate the application process. Bob works tirelessly with Tedesco’s Ouimet Chairperson, Michael Zmetrovich, to ensure that all club caddies and golf employees take advantage of this scholarship opportunity. They also work together to keep the rest of the Tedesco Membership involved in the mentoring process as well as the support of The Fund’s critical fundraising programs, including the Bag Tag and Golf Marathon. Bob Green demonstrates how integral a role the golf professional plays in the Ouimet programs and the future of those young Ouimet Scholars. “Frankly, I am literally speechless receiving this award. The Ouimet Scholarship has been such an asset for the young men and women who have worked at our club over the years. They are such outstanding kids and being able to help them every year was an honor itself,” said Mr. Green.

O

n the following pages we proudly list the 2017-2018 Francis Ouimet Scholarship recipients who represent the $2 Million in Scholarships awarded this year. We believe that the Ouimet Scholarship program sees such incredible graduation results because of two main factors. First, the financial investment in the young men & women increases their ability to afford the tuition and remain enrolled. Secondly, the Scholars have a strong work ethic, having grown up working in golf at a young age, surrounded by leaders and role models at the clubs. In short, the Scholarship works because THEY work!

College of the Holy Cross '18 Being a Ouimet scholarship recipient has made paying for college much less burdensome, and it is a testament to the generosity of golf clubs and all their members. Every year, the costs of going to college continue to rise, but the support of the Ouimet Fund as made me attending Holy Cross much less stressful on my family and I financially. The Ouimet Scholarship Fund continues to grow from your support, and serves as an example of how great the Massachusetts golf community is.

This fall, the uncle, sister and mother of late Ouimet Scholar DJ Conroy (UConn '12 & Winchester CC) came to Golf House and presented us with a donation of $10,000 from their "Do It For DJ” golf tournament held in July. This special event, honoring his “humble and kind” spirit and life, created proceeds to organizations that were important to DJ. Bryn Mawr College '18 For the past three years, the Ouimet Scholarship has helped me at Bryn Mawr College just outside of Philadelphia studying Art History with a double minor and concentration in Museum Anthropology and Africana Studies. I will be applying to grad school, but immediately after graduation in the spring, I’m going to return to Oakley Country Club and work for a bit and hold a curatorial assistantship at the Institute of Contemporary Art here in Philadelphia. Thank you to the Ouimet donors, supporters and other fellow Scholars.

Today, I am a junior studying Nutrition and Dietetics at Boston University with the help of a Ouimet Scholarship. Being a Ouimet Scholar has also opened so many doors for me, such as being able to take the Dale Carnegie course over the summer and learning leadership skills, and has even brought me to fun events like baseball games and caddying opportunities. I am so thankful for the Ouimet Fund.
