Sis. Brunetta Irma Jones Powell The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me to the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointeth my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Psalms 23

Her Legacy And Jesus said to his disciples, “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house there are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” John 14:1-3

On Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at 7am, Brunetta Irma Jones Powell was called to her heavenly home to rest. She was born on November 1, 1924, in Nicholas, Louisiana to the late Richard and Alexandrine Mackey Jones. She was united in holy matrimony on March 22, 1945 to the late Winston Powell, Sr. To this union six children were born: Winston, Jr., Brunetta Thomas, the late Bobby, Aubrey Don, Sr. and Terry Powell, Sr. and Gwendolyn Houston. In addition, she had one stepson, the late Glenary J. Powell. After raising her children, she raised four grandchildren, the late Charmaine Houston Smith, Leon Houston, III, Makia Houston Johnson and Nakia Houston and two great-grandchildren, Adrienne and Andria Smith. She cared for all and was the grandmother of twenty-four grandchildren (2 deceased), forty-eight great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Irma was the mother-in-law of Barbara and Linda Powell. She was the Godmother of Geraldine Prout, Carl Tate, Taneka Henry and the late Marcel Taylor. She was the sister of Alvin and Richard Jones, Lois Tate, the late Mazie Duncan, Mary Brickley, Lavinia Franklin, Clifford, Earl and Albert Jones, Sr. Baptized on August 21, 1938, at First Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Sunrise, Louisiana by the late Rev. Isaac Coleman, she was a faithful, devoted woman of God. She was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Boothville, Louisiana and was an active member of the Usher Board for many years. Irma’s favorite song was “If You Hear of My Homegoing.” Her favorite and most quoted scriptures were Ephesians 6:1-4 “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” Although her childhood dream was to become a nurse, she embraced her role as wife, mother and bookkeeper of the family business. She relished in studying her bible. She also enjoyed quilting and cooking… most knew to stop by her house on Sundays for a feast. Known to some as Tilly and to others as Big Irm, she loved and was loved by many and will be dearly missed.

My Dear Mother Ma, you were that and much more, a blessing to us all. You have come to the end of your journey and your soul has been set free. Now you are where there are pearly gates and streets are paved with gold. We will remember the love we shared as a family and truly you will be missed. Love Forever, Children, Grandchildren & Family

What My Godmother Meant To Me

She Is Gone By David Alexander Elder

You can shed tears that she is gone, Or you can smile because she has lived. You can close your eyes and pray that she will come back, Or you can open your eyes and see all that she has left. Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her, Or you can be full of the love that you shared.

Godmothers have no wands or wings, So they work with wisdom, love and things. Having taken on this role, You loved me right down to my soul. You offered kindness and greetings with hugs, pinches and kisses, Each freely out of love which I will miss. But Your spirit will linger on forever You’re in God’s Heaven now and no longer in pain. In my thoughts, you’ll always remain How lucky I was, how blessed I’ve been, You were more than my Godmother, You were also my friend.

I love you and miss you ~ Your Goddaughter Taneka

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday, Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember her and only that she is gone, Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, Be empty and turn your back. Or you can do what Mom would have wanted: Smile, Open your Eyes, Love and Go On.
