Her Story Her master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; thou have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things; enter thou into the joy of the Lord (Matthew 25:23).
On March 31, 2015 Mattie L. Crockett, 70, of New Orleans, Louisiana entered Heaven’s Gates. Mattie was born in Amite County of Liberty Mississippi on February 7, 1945 to the union of the late Leo and Annie Bell McKnight. She was a consummate mother and believer. One of her favorite scriptures was Psalm 37:3 ‘Trust in the LORD and do good, live in the land and practice being faithful’. She worked tirelessly on behalf of her children and grandchildren; yet, treated everyone like they were her own family. She never met a stranger, always believed the best about others and gave the best of her service to her church and place of employment. Mattie was a long-time member of New Saint Mark Baptist Church and worked at Munholland United Methodist Church of Metairie, Louisiana for over 30 years. Coming of age Mattie was a military spouse. She has always been independent, always gave the best of her service and always got the very best out of others. She was a great friend and neighbor; with her best friends being her sisters and brothers. Mattie had an unwavering faith in God and through the years was very involved with her church. She was a talented soloist who also sang in the choir. One of her favorite songs was sung by Mahalia Jackson, entitled ‘When You Hear My Home Going, Don’t Worry About Me.’
Her Story cont…. In her leisure and retirement, Mattie spent time enjoying family, friends, fishing and flea markets. Other interest included gardening and collecting different figurines from around the crescent city. She loved western and sitcom movie channels, laughing with family and enjoying the sanctuary of her beautiful home. She was an avid New Orleans Saints Football fan and enjoyed watching “Dem Boyz” play.
Mattie leaves behind to cherish her loving memories: two Children, Son, Chaplain (Lieutenant Colonel) Juan M. Crockett (Rochelle) who serves on active duty at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD; and Daughter, Deiontia M. Crockett, Baton Rouge, LA; (9) Grandchildren; Tyrone (Latchia) of Dallas, TX, Ashley, Tajuanna, Lionel, Angel, Sean and Shanaya (Crockett), all of New Orleans, LA; Kammal Peterson (Tanita), who serves on active duty at Camp Smith, Hawaii and Ashley Peterson, Fort Knox, KY; (2) Brothers, Mason (Lozetta) McKnight of McComb, MS and Willie (Dorothy) McKnight of New Orleans; (4) Sisters, Dora Kelley, Joan McKnight (a devoted sister), Kattie Conrad, all of New Orleans, LA, and Sally Brumfield of Houston, TX; (11) great grandchildren and a host of many nieces, nephews friends and other family members. She is proceeded in death by (1) Brother, Deacon Otis McKnight Sr. and (1) Great Granddaughter, Mariah Crockett. Chaplain Crockett and his family thank you for your many expressions of condolence, your prayers, texts and phone calls.

Finally Home By: Don Wyrtzen
When engulfed by the terror of tempestuous sea, Unknown waves before you roll. At the end of doubt and peril is eternity, Though fear and conflict seize your soul. But, just think, of stepping on shore And finding it Heaven! Of touching a hand, and finding it God’s! Of breathing new air, and finding it Celestial! Of waking up in GLORY, and finding it HOME! When surrounded by the blackness of the darkest night, Oh, how lonely death can be. At the end of this long tunnel is a shining light, For death is swallowed up it victory! But, just think, of stepping on shore And finding it Heaven! Of touching a hand, and finding it God’s! Of breathing new air, and finding it Celestial! Of waking up in GLORY, and finding it HOME!
Our Mother Kept A Garden Author Unknown
Our Mother kept a garden. A garden of the heart; She planted all the good things, That gave our life it's start. She turned us to the sunshine, And encouraged us to dream: Fostering and nurturing The seeds of self-esteem. And when the winds and rains came, She protected us enough; But not too much, she knew we’d need To stand up strong and tough. Her constant good example, Always taught us right from wrong; Markers for our pathway To last our whole life long. We are our Mother's garden, We are her legacy. And we hope today she feels the love, Reflected back from us.
Tribute Mom, Mattie… You have scattered seeds on the earth that will become trees, that shall reach the sky. You have seen freedom come to the mountain and hill top. You have imparted wisdom with your wise remarks and sense of humor. You have fought for what you believed in; and that was powerful. You have encouraged our growth in church; our education and our parenting skills. Your faith produced a legacy of educated, Christian leaders. Your hands and voice consoled us. Momma, you were really a strong lady. You have been the blood in our hearts and have touched all kinds; cheering their morning glories and healing their defeats. Strong in voice, body, and mind you loved…who you were. You were proud that you worked hard. Your eternity is what you gave to the earth. You loved and impacted the lives of your children, families and friends. Positive through hardships, you knew the secrets inside the patterns of life. A loving, Godly example of a Woman of Virtue and Honor. We will always love you. You will always live in our hearts and minds--…till time ends.
