Annual Session August 5 & 7-10, 2017 THEME: “Together, Moving toward Excellence” Hebrews 6:1-3
Dr. Charles J. Southall, III, President Rev. Darrick R. Johnson, Executive/General Secretary
Tulane Memorial Baptist Church 3601 Paris Avenue New Orleans, LA 70122
Rev. Ross Johnson, Host Pastor
Biography of Dr. Charles Joseph Southall, III
Dr. Charles Joseph Southall, III, was born to the late Rev. Charles J. Southall, Jr. and Mrs. Isabella McFarland Southall. He is the sibling of the late Gregory K. Southall, Sr. and Minister Kersandra S. Peters. He married the former Lila Maria Peters on September 17, 1977 and became parents to Charles IV, Chelsey Junonna and the late Myrtle Southall. He is the proud grandfather of Al LaChea Lailah Davis, Cureia Jolie Southall and Charle’ Ja’doir Southall. Dr. Southall received and acknowledged his call in February, 1979 at the age of 21. He preached his first sermon on March 17, 1979 and was licensed to preach on January 11, 1980 at the Lowerlight Baptist Church under the pastorate of his late father. On November 15, 1984, Dr. Southall was ordained by the First District Association and the late Dr. A. P. Fortner who served as President. He was installed as the 7th Pastor of First Emanuel Baptist Church on April 24, 1989 under the auspices of Ideal Missionary Baptist and Educational Association by the late Dr. Morris Burrell. Dr. Southall was installed as the 3rd President of United Baptist Association, Incorporated on September 22, 2015. A recipient of numerous awards and honors, Dr. Southall is affiliated with the National Baptist Convention, USA; Delgado Foundation; Louisiana Missionary Baptist State Convention; Community Services; Greater New Orleans Faith Based Community Development Corporation; Comprehensive Central City Initiative of New Orleans, New Orleans Faith Based Initiative, Innocence Project New Orleans; Greg Monroe Foundation; and the New Orleans Police Dept. Advisory Council appointed by Chief of Police Harrison. Throughout his life and ministry, Dr. Southall has been passionate about the people of God, community and lost souls. Therefore, all his roles of community service, boards and affiliations are tools that lead to his call to serve the Most High God.
Words From Your Servant Leader Salutations to All Officers, Pastor’s, Churches, Directors, Leaders, Laypersons, Men, Women, Children and Believers. I come to you in the Only Name that matters Christ the Lord, in whom we Live, Move, and have our being who has united and kept us moving forward another Year! WELCOME to the 16th Annual Session of the United Baptist Association, Incorporated. “Thanks” sounds so inadequate to express our Gratitude to Pastor Ross Johnson and the Tulane Memorial Baptist Church Family, for their gracious and embracing gesture of love in hosting UBAI. Truly, my brother and friend Pastor Ross Johnson has been more than accommodating. So due to my lack of Vernacular to express our true feelings, let me simply say from the core of UBAI, THANK YOU!!! As we assemble this week to Worship, Study, Celebrate, Plan and conduct the Kingdom’s Agenda, May God empower us as we strive to go higher. Hebrews 6:1-3 says, “Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God. Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. And this will we do, if God permit.” KJV “Together, Moving Toward Excellence” Our theme reminds us of what it takes to function today, and that is Simply Moving Toward Excellence, but even more critical doing it, “TOGETHER.” What a Powerful Word “Together” in a time when most are competing to be the Biggest or the Best in others Eyes…while GOD is looking for one Church!! As I stated at the Westside Association’s Session, and I echo, “Collaborations Kill Competition.” But, in order to collaborate we must agree! For Amos 3:3 asked a simple question, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” KJV In a time where the terrorist are not just Al-qaeda or ISIS, but also those who we selected to lead our land, who threaten immigrants, seniors, the poor and ordinary hard working folk, with cuts to Healthcare and the threat of deportation. The Challenges go on and on and God’s Army, the church, is DIVIDED and in many cases Dormant!!! So, in the shadows of all these dark threats while America is on life support the church is still far to splintered and silent! United, as we meet let us use these moments to become revitalized as we fine tune and realign our Focus. As we break our silence and lift our voices to speak the Kings Agenda and raise the Conscience of America, so that the Church can be the LIGHT OF THE WORLD. Then, when we leave this 16th Session our Pastors, Leaders and Churches will leave in agreement to lift our voices to press the King’s Agenda, as we move “Together Toward Excellence.”!!! May the Lord Bless our work and lift us toward Excellence… His Servant Leader, Pastor Charles J. Southall, III President
Tulane Memorial Baptist Church Reverend Ross M. Johnson, Jr., Senior Pastor 3601 Paris Avenue New Orleans, Louisiana 70122
It is a real joy to have the most esteemed and noted United Baptist Association, Inc.as our guest for the 16th Annual Session on this week. We are glad you chose Tulane Memorial Baptist Church as your host; and we thank you for giving us this opportunity to show forth our hospitality as “brethren dwelling together in unity”. It is my prayer that you have received a very warm welcome from a member of our Greeters Ministry by now. Your presence this week will allow us the opportunity to become better acquainted and to make new friends. We trust your attendance this week will be just the beginning of many blessings to come. Our goal is to be the kind of church and have the kind of services that will meet the spiritual needs of those who visit us. The ministries and programs of our church are designed to honor God’s command for us to “forsake not the assembling of ourselves together.” We have planned and prepared to make your experience most memorable and pleasurable in every way. If you have any questions or needs, please just ask an Usher or Greeter, and we will be glad to answer any questions you may have. Again, we welcome you as co-laborers in the Gospel, and thank you for giving us this opportunity to host the 16th Annual Session of United Baptist Association, Inc. May the Lord bless and enrich your life, is our prayer. In His Service, I remain…

Historical Moments “Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3)
United Baptist Association, Incorporated was organized in 2001 by seven pastors in the metropolitan New Orleans area, namely Pastors C. S. Gordon, Jr., Percy Howard, Sam Johnson, Bernard Murray, Noily Paul, Jr., Fred T. Porter, and Charles J. Southall. On Sunday, September 9, 2001, at New Zion Baptist Church, the presidential cabinet, executive board, and auxiliary officers were officially installed. The officers were: Dr. C. C. Gordon, Jr., President, Dr. Noily Paul, Jr., Vice President, Dr. Charles J. Southall, III, General Secretary and Pastor Bernard G. Murray, Sr., Treasurer. The Executive Board members were: Dr. Fred T. Porter, Dr. Sam Johnson, Pastor Percy Howard, Sis. Annette G. Pete and Bro. Charles W. Hunter. The president of Louisiana Missionary Baptist State Convention, Dr. Harry Blake of Shreveport, Louisiana, did the installation message. Not only was this a historical moment in time, this evening was an aura of Spiritual ecstasy and an ambiance of prominent significance as presidents and representatives of every association in the New Orleans area and some officers in our State Convention were participants on this auspicious occasion. “What a Fellowship…What a Joy Divine!” The First Annual Session was held on August 7-10, 2002, at New Zion Baptist Church, pastored by Dr. C. S. Gordon, Jr. Moreover, the First Scholarship & Fellowship Banquet was held on Friday, February 22, 2002, at the Radisson Hotel, New Orleans, Louisiana. The chairpersons were Bro. Charles W. Hunter and Sis. Annette G. Pete. A scholarship in the amount of $ 3,000.00 was awarded to Jessica Bilbo, a member of Greater St. Rose Baptist Church, Dr. Noily Paul, Jr. Pastor. The Congress of Christian Education crystallized the intent and realized the need for Spiritual Growth and Development in our Churches, thus, the first Congress of Christian Education was held November 12-15, 2002, at the New Zion B. C., Dr. C.S. Gordon, Jr., Pastor. With the emphasis on Christian Education, we wanted our Churches and individual members to be informed leaders and workers in God’s vineyard. Indeed, we were on our way, by the Grace of God. In 2005, Pastor Fred Porter was appointed by President Gordon as Vice President of United Baptist Association, Inc. Two weeks after the 2005 Annual Session, Hurricane Katrina filled our city with water, trauma, devastation, and death. Many of the Churches in the New Orleans and surrounding areas were severely damaged or destroyed. Thus, many members were relocated to other areas.
Historical Moments In 2006 – 2008, New Orleans was still recovering from the aftermath of a cruel Hurricane Katrina; however, United Baptist Association, Inc. or UBAI, as it became affectionately known, never missed, cancelled, or postponed its Annual Sessions. They were held as scheduled during those years. God truly Blessed UBAI and kept us together as He added Churches to our roster. Although we were a small, young Association, UBAI was well represented in the local, state, and national associations, conventions and other denominational bodies. In 2009, Dr. Harry Blake made an official announcement at the Annual Session in Baton Rouge, Louisiana that 2010 would be his last year as President of the Louisiana Baptist State Convention. With that said, in August of 2009, at the Annual Session of UBAI, hosted by Mount Kingdom Baptist Church (Rev. Darrick Johnson, Pastor), our president, Dr. C. S. Gordon, Jr., made an official announcement that he would be candidate for presidency of the state convention. In 2010, Dr. Gordon succeeded in that endeavor and became the first president of the Louisiana Baptist State Convention elected from Southeastern Louisiana. After becoming President of the State Convention, Dr. Gordon informed the UBAI family at the Annual Session held at First Emanuel Baptist Church, pastored by Dr. Charles J. Southall, III, that he would serve only one more year. In 2011, Dr. Fred T. Porter, pastor of Cypress Grove and St. Matthew Baptist Churches was unanimously elected at the second president of UBAI and Dr. Charles J. Southall was named vice president They were installed on Friday, October 28, 2011, at Cypress Grove Baptist Church, pastored by Dr. Porter. The Installation Sermon was delivered by Dr. C. S. Gordon, Jr., who now serves as president of the Louisiana Baptist State Convention. At the 2015 February Board Meeting of UBAI, Dr. Porter stated that he will not be seeking another term as president. With that understanding, Dr. Gerald Vinnett nominated Dr. Charles J. Southall as a candidate for president at the May Board Meeting held at Greater Mount Rose B. C., pastored by Rev. Bernard Murray. Dr. Charles J. Southall III received a majority vote and became the third president of UBAI. The installation for Dr. Southall was held on September 22, 2015 at First Emanuel Baptist Church. UBAI is thankful for our Spirit-led organizers… For such a Humble Beginning… For such an Indelible Past… For such a Rewarding Present, and an Unlimited Future… ALL PRAISES BE TO GOD…
