If you haven’t already broken your New Year resolution to get fit, you may want to consider the many fitness and other classes offered at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center, located at 301 NW 103 Ave. There are classes for every interest and skill level. Many residents have reached out to me on how to dispose of Household Hazardous Waste. Clean Harbors Environmental Services provides household hazardous waste drop-off events for Pembroke Pines residents on a quarterly basis. The drop-off events are held at the City’s wastewater treatment plant located at 13975 Pembroke Road. The hours of operation are 8 am to 2 pm. You may want to mark your calendars for the 2023 scheduled dates: March 4, 2023, June 3, 2023, September 9, 2023, and December 9, 2023

Acceptable hazardous waste includes paint thinner/stripper; paint, oil or latex; fertilizer; pool chemicals; fluorescent tubes; flares; mercury thermometers; spot removers; oven and drain cleaners; furniture and metal polish; batteries- rechargeable, auto and marine; and propane tanks. Unacceptable hazardous waste includes tires; explosives; alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, C&D, 9v) and biohazard/ medical waste.

Acceptable electronic waste includes cell phones, television, computers, printers and computer keyboards. Unacceptable electronic waste includes stereos/speakers, appliances, musical instruments, DVD players and VCR’s.

Residents must bring proof of Pembroke Pines residency to use the drop-off services. For a more complete list of acceptable and unacceptable items, please visit www.ppines.com of if you have a question, call 954-518-9000.

Everyone is encouraged to attend our Kindness Initiative/ Community Peace Picnic event on February 4, 2023, from 11 am to 2 pm. This joint effort between the City of Pembroke Pines and Broward County Schools will take place at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way. It’s an afternoon of sharing kindness, musical performances and the perfect spot for a picnic. Our very popular Taste of Pines is another not to miss event which will take place on Thursday, February 16, 2023, at the Charles F. Dodge City Center. This event sells out quickly, so please get your tickets in advance to ensure you are part of the festivities. Participants have an opportunity to sample the best of the best cuisine from our local restaurants, wines and enjoy live musical entertainment. The annual Taste of Pines benefits the City of Pembroke Pines Charter School Foundation. For more info, please call 954-392-2116.

For all the golfers out there, don’t forget about the Mayor Frank C. Ortis Annual Pembroke Pines Charter School Golf Tournament which will benefit the Pembroke Pines Charter Schools. It will be held on March 17, 2023, at the Pembroke Lakes Country Club, located at 10500 Taft Street.
