People have underestimated Hollywood native Marquise Brown for most of his life. Brown did not receive any college scholarship offers after starring in football and track at Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School as a high schooler. He made ends meet by working at Six Flags Magic Mountain while playing football at College of the Canyons. His determination continued and eventually piqued the interest of the football powerhouse the University of Oklahoma. He went on to become one of the best wide receivers in the country and was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft. Brown never forgot where he came from.
On July 9th, Brown hosted more than 250 Hollywood kids on the very same field where he learned his craft as a pop warner player. He partnered with the Hollywood Police Athletic League to hold a free event focused on fun, skills, and inspiration.
Participants were put through a series of drills to work on their football skills. They were also given teeshirts and snacks. Most importantly, they got to hear words of encouragement from their local football hero.
“It feels good to get out here and interact with the kids,” said Brown in a YouTube video from the event, “It’s great to come back here and be that person that they can learn from and train with. Especially me, being a smaller guy. For them to see me and where I am at, it gives them the motivation that everything is possible.”
“I coached Marquise when he was eight years old,” said PAL Football Coach Brown, “This is a classic example of a successful Hollywood kid giving back to the community.”
The event was the brainchild of Brown and his mother, Shannon James. They notably named the event the First Annual Marquise “Hollywood” Brown Day Football Clinic because they plan to hold the event every year during the NFL offseason.
