What Floats Your Boat?

Alittle over a decade ago, The City of Hollywood created a family-friendly event to bring the community The events commence promptly at 10:00 am Saturday, October 9th at the City of Hollywood Marina located at 700 Polk Street. together. It quickly became the most unique and highly anticipated annual event which everyone loved. But unfortunately, like everything else in 2020 it was cancelled.

However, the new year has brought some new hope, new meaning, and some new challenges so, gather your team, grab your paddles, and get on over to the “2021 Cardboard Boat Race”. The City of Hollywood Department of Parks and Recreation and Cultural Arts is so excited to bring back the action-packed race.

Sailors are encouraged to dress up, name their team, jump in their cardboard vessels and “start their paddles” while the crowd cheers them on as they embark across the waters of North Lake. Categories such as “Most Creative Design”, “Fastest Vessel”, “Last Boat Sailing”, “Most Spectacular Sinking”, and “People’s Choice” will all be awarded and judged by onlookers. Although it was always a highlight to design, construct, and paint the boats on-site, for the first time all boats must be built off-site, in advance and according to specifications outlined in the registration packet to ensure “smooth sailing”. Pre-registration ends on October 3rd and can be found on the city website. Day-of event registration is allowed if space is available. The last race prior to the pandemic in 2019 brought the largest attendance for spectators and competitors. Forty-five crews attempted to paddle across the water in their quest for the ultimate prize – the coveted trophy. The hopes are for this year to exceed those numbers and continue to grow. Food and drinks will also be available to purchase. “The City is excited to bring back the popular Cardboard Boat Race community event this fall to the Hollywood Marina. The annual event brings together teams who compete in designing and building their cardboard vessels.
