MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Pembroke Pines

UPDATE

By Frank C. Ortis

Let’s Get Pembroke Pines Prepared! We are now in hurricane season, and while it runs until November 30, it is critical for everyone in South Florida to always be prepared and aware of weather events that can impact the state. We encourage our residents and businesses to please visit and scroll down through all the hurricane prep pages under Pembroke Pines Prepared at www.ppines.com/hurricane, but most especially visit our resource page for helpful information that can be printed or downloaded before a storm approaches. Should a hurricane occur, the homepage of the city website will be dedicated to hurricane information, and a special page will be created for all updates. Updates will also be provide via social media, Pines Media TV (Comcast 78 and U-verse 99) and to all local TV and radio stations.

If you prefer to get a call, residents are encouraged to sign up for CodeRED, a telephone notification system that sends mass notifications by phone, email and text. In the event of an evacuation, utility outage, water main break, fire or flood, chemical spill, or other emergency situation, the City may activate CodeRED to send emergency notifications to registered subscribers. The City may also use CodeRED to communicate non-life safety matters, such as planned road closures, water main repairs, water service interruptions, etc. You can sign up for CodeRed on the city’s website at www.ppines.com or by calling 1-866-939-0911.

Vehicle burglaries and thefts are often crimes of opportunity where thieves take advantage of unsecured doors to steal items left unattended or out in plain view. The Pembroke Pines Police Department has joined police departments throughout the country in a public safety campaign aimed at promoting crime prevention strategies to reduce and prevent these thefts. This campaign, known as the #9PMRoutine, encourages residents to conduct security checks of their vehicles each evening to ensure their property is secure.

Participating residents are encouraged to set a reminder at 9 pm each night to ensure that the following tasks are completed:

• Valuables from vehicles (including spare keys, firearms, and garage openers) are brought inside. • Vehicle doors and windows are locked and secured. • Garage doors are closed and secured. • Alarm systems are enabled.

The police department encourages all residents to take part in this crime prevention campaign, and make the #9PMRoutine a regular part of their schedules.

As the state starts to return to the new normal, be sure to check the city’s website for upcoming events or call 954-986-5027 for information. I look forward to celebrating city events with you in the future months.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com. Mayor Frank C. Ortis
