Parkland Update

By Mayor Rich Walker

June always starts my mind wandering. Sure it grows hot and marks the beginning of hurricane season, but, after my family and I prepare as best we can for what hurricanes might come, I’m reminded (as I often am) of why we love Parkland so much. With miles and miles of pathways to explore, numerous Summer camp options within the City, and great events and parks, there is always something exciting to do in Parkland. What’s more, we have all of south Florida at our fingertips, so our Summers can be filled with great activities.

June also marks the completion of another school year. There’s no more appropriate time to thank all those who make schools in Parkland among the best in South Florida. Teachers spend the most time with students and are the main reason our students are so successful. Their work ethic and creativity help ensure that our students enjoy the education experience, stay engaged, and succeed. I couldn’t be more grateful for their unique skill set and dedication to the youth of Parkland.

Behind the teachers is a support staff that ensures the administrative component of our schools continues to run smoothly. There are so many aspects to the operation of a school that we take for granted, but there are committed employees on all levels who work behind the scenes to ensure the stage is set for our children to have a quality academic experience.

Finally, a big thank you to our principals who carry a significant responsibility every single day. They oversee a campus and staff that are larger than many businesses. It amazes me how they do it with apparent ease and we, as parents, come to expect their ability as ordinary. But it isn’t, it is extraordinary and they should know how grateful we are as a community for their leadership.

This past school year we made great strides in returning to a pre-pandemic environment. Who would have thought “normal” could feel so good? As we continue returning to full normal, let’s take a moment to appreciate the students, faculty, and staff of all of our schools for their resilience and persistence in working through all the challenges of the past few years.

If you would like to share your thoughts about our schools or you have questions or comments you’d like to share with me, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached via e-mail at rwalker@cityofparkland.org or via cell phone at (973) 390-1453. Of course, I am frequently available monthly at Parkland businesses and love to talk with residents there. I encourage you to visit the City’s website cityofparkland.org and click on the social media icon that you prefer, to ensure that you stay informed on events and helpful information. Enjoy the Summer. Mayor Rich Walker
