SCHOOL NEWS FEEDING THE IMAGINATION ONE BOOK AT A TIME

Right before the holidays, Mirror Lake Elementary received the best gift. It took 3 years of ambitious fundraising to finally afford it, nevertheless, the new vending machine was worth the wait. Typically vending machines are filled with snacks, candy, and beverages, but not this one! The unveiling revealed that this one had a greater purpose than feeding the tummy; This one would feed the mind.
Nestled inside the school’s media center is Inchy, the brand-new bookworm vending machine. Right now, it is the only one in Planation and these eager students are ready to earn their books which are funded by the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and the Scholastic dollars.
Council members Denise Horland and Nick Sortal were able to attend the special holiday ribbon-cutting event. "Mirror Lake Elementary continues to find unique ways to encourage students," said councilmember Sortal. "There's just this aura of 'let's try it, and not be afraid.' You can see that mindset on every teacher's face."
Students will receive gold tokens for successes on their Accelerated Reader (AR) assignments and for reading just to read. Although always encouraged to read, they will now be awarded in a different way for their efforts. Their hard-earned coins will give them the ability to select books with titles such as ‘Harry Potter” and “Captain Underpants”. Additionally, they will have the satisfaction and excitement of “buying” a gift for themselves.
“I am so thrilled we have this at our school. I loved literacy as a kid and was so happy to just pick up a book and read,” expressed Mirror Lake Literacy Coach, Miss Johnson. “So, I couldn’t be happier that our students have the opportunity to do the same.”
“The best gift you can give a child is the love of literacy and the love to read,” explained Principal Marlin Veliz. “Our PTO went through hoops and hurdles to get this perfect gift and it is the most perfect vending machine for our school. This is what I live for!”
