By Dr. Warren Windram D.P.M.
If you have had cortisone injections in the past to treat a foot and ankle condition, and they were not effective, there is an alternative treatment plan with the use of PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma).

There is a 100% natural and risk free treatment option called PRP. When conservative efforts with cortisone injections fail, it’s important to know that we have PRP available as a second treatment solution. PRP differs from cortisone in that PRP injections deliver direct healing factors and promote healing while cortisone injections help relieve pain and inflammation in a specific area of your body. Healing after an injury involves a well-orchestrated series of events where proteins in the blood act as messengers to regulate the process. The proteins involved in the healing process are derived from small cell fragments in the blood called platelets. PRP is a concentration of platelets/growth factors created from your own blood. The process of your podiatrist obtaining the PRP is less than 20 minutes and can be done in the comfort of a regular office setting. Utilizing a special kit, your blood will be spun down to obtain the necessary concentrates of platelets and growth factors. Conditions that PRP can treat include Arthritis (Foot/ankle), Ligament injuries, Joint pain, Achilles Tendonitis, Plantar Fasciitis, heels spurs, and neuritis. Why is PRP a great alternative? Because PRP uses your body’s own natural properties to treat your injury. PRP is a good option because it has no risks involved because it uses your own bodily fluids.
