PLANTATION FIRE DEPARTMENT MAINTAINS ITS VOLUNTEER ROOTS

In 1957 twenty-one civic-minding residents of Plantation joined together to form the city’s first Volunteer Fire Department. The group included several of the city’s founders and operated out of an old warehouse located near Broward Boulevard and East Acre Drive. Little did they know they were setting a standard of service that continues to today.

In 1960 the first fire station was built on Broward Boulevard at East Acre. Throughout its 65-year history the department has continually grown to meet the needs of the residents. Fire Station #2, which also housed the administrative offices, was added in 1974.

Today, The Plantation Fire Department is a “combination department.” It is comprised of a volunteer Suppression Division, career Emergency Medical Service Division, a Fire and Life Safety Division, and maintenance/mechanic divisions.

The Department operates six stations strategically placed throughout the City. The Department currently serves an area of 22 square miles, a residential population of 94,000, and a daytime population in excess of 150,000.

The lifeblood of a volunteer fire department is its members. The Plantation Fire Department is the largest volunteer fire department in Florida, with more than 190 active firefighters.
