There’s Snow Place Like Home
COMMUNITY NEWS There’s Snow Place Like Home By Beverly Perkins
By this time, everyone is aware that many of the annual end-of-year festivities have been cancelled. Anticipated gatherings, yearly traditions, and photos with Santa have all come to an abrupt halt due to the global pandemic. However, the City of Plantation wants to do their part to bring some holiday cheer into the community and help their residents get in the spirit of the season.
Last month, the City announced and opened “There’s Snow Place Like Plantation Snowman Contest”. Although it will not be snowing in our beautiful South Florida hometown, participants are encouraged to use their imagination and create a three-dimensional winter/holiday scene featuring a snowman/snowwoman and snow.
Projects such as these are great for local Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops, neighbors, and families to come together and not only build something special to showcase in the community, but build different bonds and relationships while preparing for December’s signature holidays.
“It definitely isn’t easy getting into the holiday spirit this year, especially during a pandemic with the loss of jobs and so many lives,” states Pamela Baker, Plantation resident and mother of two vicarious elementary school students. “But it’s so nice to see that Plantation’s Parks and Recreation department is giving everyone an opportunity to become involved and celebrate the season.”
The creations may be built with any materials and stand on its own by an individual or a group. All submissions will be divided into the following groups: elementary, middle school, and high school students, and groups/families. The only restrictions are that entries must not exceed 5-feet in height or need electricity. The projects may be dropped off with an application at the Plantation Community Center located at 5555 Palm Tree Road in Plantation.
The deadline date for display entries is Wednesday, December 9th, 2020 at 5:00 pm. All entries will be displayed at the Plantation Community Center and then shown and judged on Facebook. Winners will be announced on December 28th, 2020 with prizes awarded to first, second, and third place winners.
“At the end of the day we must remember to celebrate life and our wonderful community, and moments like these are worth taking advantage of. We are definitely excited to be putting our creative energies to use,” added Baker.
Please note that The City of Plantation does not assume responsibility for damaged or missing artwork and all projects must be picked up By January 4th, 2021, or they risk being disposed by the City.
