Two Plantation Hadassah Members Celebrate Decades Around the Sun

It was double the pleasure and double the fun as it’s not too often we get to celebrate two centennial birthdays and not just one. Two members of L’Chayim Plantation Hadassah reached milestones this past year; Phyllis Gerber celebrated her 101st birthday while Jean Sotschen celebrated her 102nd birthday. These ladies are proud to still be active members of the community and their Hadassah group.

Hadassah is about people and changing lives to make the world a better place. And, what a better place it is with this lovely duo. Sotschen had belonged to the Hadassah chapter at Sunrise Lakes, which folded into the Lauderdale West chapter. Gerber is an original member of the Lauderdale West community, having served in almost every imaginable capacity, including the president. Despite an ongoing pandemic, both continue to serve, participate, and socialize with every opportunity they get.

Plantation Councilmember Nick Sortal commemorated the magnificent birthdays of both women at the group’s October meeting. The women’s birthdays were earlier this year, but Sortal’s acknowledgment was delayed because of COVID-19.

Councilmember Sortal opened his speech by saying, “When we look at you both, we don’t see 100+-year-olds. We see women who inspire us to love every trial and tribulation of life every day.”

The esteemed councilmember further went on to read his proclamations which noted that Phyllis Gerber grew up in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York, with a starting salary of $5 a week before advancing first through the Army Women’s Auxiliary and then into the regular Army Corp. He then exclaimed how Jean Sotschen inspires us all with her do-it-yourself attitude by continuing to shop for herself and maintain her health without the need for an aide and how she brightens the room with her caring, kindness, and sense of humor.

Each birthday girl then received a proclamation declaring October 19, 2021 “Phyllis Gerber Day” and “Jean Sotschen Day”.

“Having one member of your club more than a century old is a rarity and Lauderdale West Hadassah has two,” said Councilmember Nick Sortal. “It was such an honor to celebrate these two inspirational women! They are treasures.”
