Weston Singer Shines In Weston Music Society Holiday Concert
On December fifth, the Weston Music Society presented a virtual live concert featuring Jose Veliz on piano and Mikayla Cohen singing holiday songs. It garnered over 2700 views and delighted the audience who were invited to choose the final song. (“Joy to the World” was that selection.)
Jose had previously given a piano solo virtual performance for the WMS that was equally well received. Jose noted, “I have worked with the WMS on various occasions and have enjoyed performing for them. It was especially nice to share the stage with Mikayla for this Holiday Concert”.

Gina Catone, WMS concert coordinator, said, “It was a magical evening listening to live holiday music from these two talented performers.”
Despite both performing in masks and with a plexiglass barrier. Mikayla shone as she hit every note with her wide range and beautiful tone. She has been performing since she was around 5, beginning with groups who sang at various outdoor venues around South Florida. In middle school, she was involved in the drama club, performing in many shows and theatre competitions. She was awarded a full theatre scholarship to attend American Heritage School where she continued working on her craft. After which she attended Elon University in North Carolina.
Mikayla is also a songwriter and has created her first EP entitled “Same Stars” which can be viewed on all streaming platforms. She recently became an entrepreneur, forming her own business group called Little Light Princess Company whose focus is to provide live and virtual children’s entertainment as many different princesses for birthdays and other occasions. She has 680 followers on Facebook which has resulted in parties every weekend. Her goal is to move to New York City and see where her remarkable talent can take her. Mikayla herself says, “I am so grateful that organizations like the Weston Music Society are providing platforms for artists and free live entertainment to the community in these difficult times. One of the main reasons I started Little Light Princesses Company was to bring joy and happiness to children during the isolation the pandemic has caused. Music has also been a wonderful medium such a great way to connect with others. The holiday concert was truly a magical experience for Jose and me.”
Rose Sklar, a WMS Board member, adds, “I have been a big fan of Mikayla for over a decade. I watched her light up the stage at Falcon Cove Middle School and followed her in high school and college. She captivated all who joined us with her beautiful voice and talent”.
Lou Marett, WMS President, sums it up, “The volunteers of the W.M.S. work hard to promote the love of music and to support young musicians in the Weston Community. We are overjoyed to be able to spotlight the budding talent of someone as special as Mikayla”
