Each year Broward County Public Schools’ (BCPS) recognizes outstanding school leaders who have succeeded in providing high-quality learning opportunities for students with their annual Caliber Awards ceremony. These top leaders are acknowledged by their peers and school communities for the exemplary contributions they have made to the profession. Three principals made it as finalists for the 2021 Principal of the Year (POY) including Manatee Bay’s very own Heather Hedman-DeVaughn. The esteemed educator has spent the last 11 years at the helm of the Weston elementary school where she continues to empower her students and her h team to exceed and excel in all academic areas. “Besides maintaining our school grade of an A, we have had the highest student achievement data in our school’s history and developed a successful and sustainable Dual Language program where our students have gone from k-5 and come out bi-lingual, bi-cultural, and bi-literate in Spanish. We also have developed an award-winning STEM program where every student K-5 has exposure and practice with robotics, coding, and engineering. Through this program we have come out on top in the District and State competitions,” boasted the proud principal. Additionally, HedmanDeVaughn and her staff have pledged to reach and teach the “whole” child by offering over 20 interest clubs to allow students a chance to shine in areas from yoga to Minecraft and everything in-between. She is also proud of her school’s ability to come together to provide aid to countries and/or states which were affected by natural disasters, groups with a illnesses, and other schools with students less fortunate. “Principal Hedman-DeVaughn is highly respected and loved by students, faculty, staff and her school community,” said Cadre Director Sandra Shipman. “Her energy and enthusiasm for the love of her children is admirable and felt the moment you enter the building.” Furthermore, the 28-year educator gushes about her love affair with Manatee Bay Elementary. “It is a school like no other. The beautiful cultural diversity found in our population allows everyone to appreciate each other. The excellence in teachers and staff keep us teaching and learning at high levels with grand expectations. The outstanding family and community support keeps us strong. This positive diverse and excellent culture is felt the moment you walk into the building. I am humbled by this award and truly consider it an award for us all!”
